Can't find a thread for this yet, so here goes. Remake/Retelling of the classic early-70's Go Nagai anime brought up to modern-day animation standards & a new cast (but retains a definite retro look character-design wise).

OK, there are occasionally certain visual gags that I could certainly do without. The old lady at the bath house? Definitely counts as such. But also solidly sets the tone for what level the humor will be at...
The first episode does a pretty solid job of introducing the core characters of the Youkai Patrol and what looks from the ANN cast page to be almost all of the core human cast. The blend of humor (low-brow as much of it may be- nothing wrong with that though) and action is pretty good. It looks fantastic too- it's obvious that this show has a budget behind it.
Of course, one look at the cast list should make that plain. My initial impression was to go, "Holy crap, Yamaguchi Kappei is still alive???" but looking over his bio, it's just that he's mostly been in stuff I don't watch (like One Piece).
And seriously- what is the deal with Mamiko Noto this season? I think she's had more lines in the first episode of this & ep. 1 of Hanasaku Iroha than in entire seasons where she's been the lead/title character. Not that I'm in the least complaining- at least in this I was able to readily pick up that she was voicing Yukiko, which I definitely think works well.
The rest of the leads are all quite established as well, with a few other big names (Wakamoto Norio, Inoue Kikuko) backing them up.
I'm seriously beginning to hate this season- there's just entirely too many shows that I WANT to follow but nowhere near enough time to actually do so...

Yay! It's by Go Nagai! It's got monsters! It's set in the '70s! It's got monsters! That was a fun first episode. Now along with Nichijou, I have at least two shows to watch this season. ....so far, anyway.
...and that old woman was spinning her what? Good grief! That was more disturbing than the monster's 'sword'. I s'pose I shouldn't be surprised given it's one of Nagai's works, but still...

I love how Harumi is scared/frightened by everything they do at the amusement park- except for the stuff that SHOULD be frightening in the haunted house. :P
And... yeaahh, Yukiko ending up stripped and captured is going to be a recurring theme throughout this show, isn't it? Not that I'm complaining, mind you- just making an observation. I LOVE Noto in this part. Having her voicing a more energetic character is a great change.
Of course, the Demon Lord is Wakamoto Norio... and despite being massive and scary, appears to be a big softie.
Definitely a whole lot of fun... and it looks like next episode will be even more amusing as they deal with the possessed teacher.

I watched the first episode about a week ago.
It didn't cut it for me. I like the animation, the style, and most of the character designs. But it just didn't do it for me. The extreme amount of loli, and dumbed-down characters was a turn off for me.
I'm a fan of the original series, so maybe that's my problem. This remake is closer to the manga than the original, but it isn't a faithful adaption of the manga either. Everyone's personality has been dumbed down for a more modern audience it seems. For whatever reason they decided to swap Tsutomu and Harumi's roles. Originally Harumi was a minor character, who barely appeared in the manga.
I don't think I'll be watching anymore of this in the future.

It doesn't seem like anyone else on this forum finished this. This has to be the most bizarre show of the season. I honestly don't know what to make of the scenes of Yukiko and Enma "raping" each other and the massive orgy. And yet this show manages to become so perverted without even showing a single nipple.
Anyone have any idea of the sales of this show?

First volume did not rank in either form. So for that release week, that means BDs <824, DVDs <861. Second DVD volume (release is 3 BDs, but 6 monthly DVDs) was this latest release week and did not chart either, so <920 DVDs.
Well, won't be getting a sequel at any rate.
