So Sega allows Sonic fangames but a remake of one of their best franchises is enough to set off their legal department. Never mind that this took 8 years to make, and is a blast to play. I know it's probably a justified reason, but I can feel nothing but hatred toward Sega now.

First, I have to ask. Is it really a case of them allowing Sonic fangames? Or is it more a case of them not getting around to having them pulled as well? I honestly don't know either way.
Second, I have to wonder why it took that long for Sega to pull it. You think they would have essentially pulled it earlier. Well, maybe it's a case of only bother when it gets far enough.
Third, I don't pay much attention to the series as I never really played it, but has Sega even been doing anything with it? Not that changes the harsh truth.
Which is that stuff like this is always a risk. You might have it so the company never notices or turns a blind eye. Yet with each passing second, the chance of the company taking action increases.
Still one thing I have to wonder is this. If the people have the dedication and time to remake someone else's property then why not start something from scratch that's completely their own?
Yes, I realize there are advantages to relying on a familiar pre-existing product rather than having to start with a clean slate. An advantage that certain game companies are familiar with. Given the remakes we get on occasion.

Maybe they pulled it so that they can release it themselves as a downloadable game? I'd buy that for a dollar! (or more, as long as it would be reasonable)
But in all seriousness, it is a very good remake and it's sad to see it get pulled, though you can apparently still find it if you look hard enough online.

Funnily enough after this Sega did release an iPhone port of Streets of Rage II. Nice consolation, guys.
