Were the 3 Utawarerumono OVA volumes released R1 as well as the TV show?

If not, what are they like/how do they compare with the TV show? I see they have BD releases as well as DVD in Japan.

They were not released in R1. They were a bit different than the TV series in that they were animated more in the style of the game than the anime, so that can be a bit jarring. The stories in the OVA were basically side stories, so they weren't terribly important to see or anything although I found them to be entertaining enough.

Seriously speaking, the 1st ep. is crap, the 2nd has its moments and the last one is amazing.
