Has some good shock value but not half as good as Higurashi due to poor characterization and some annoying characters and some questionable storytelling.

I would only check out the anime if it ever gets a second season cleared to go. Not only is the VN infinitely better (character design aside) for the parts the anime covers it is also the only way to finish the story as of now.

It would be awesome if they can somehow rip the PS3 versions voices and add them to the PC version. I think the voice cast is great.. especially Ohara's Beatrice.

Anyway the main problem with the anime is that the visuals makes someone look really retarded for most of the show whereas in the VN it becomes apparent very quickly that those "scenes" are not quite right. It just never translated well into the anime format... which resulted in a lot of "<character> is dumb, can't he open his eyes" etc from people who never played the VN. Most VN readers stopped thinking like that halfway through the second arc...

I think Higurashi transitioned to an anime better than Umineko did though Umineko is brilliant in VN form.. especially the 5th VN.

As somebody who experienced the franchise through the anime first, I thought it was fine. The story progresses at a good pace, and there are a number of strange twists and occurrences throughout the show. There was some pixelation of violence that may bother you, though. (I don't think it was even corrected on the BD/DVD release.)

Could you care to elaborate, here or privately? I read through the second visual novel after watching most of the anime, and I still felt the same way afterwards.

That's pretty much how I felt about it too. Like the first season of Higurashi it does suffer by not providing much in the way of answers (though, as with Higurashi, that would be fixed if it gets a sequel), but it dwells less on the silly comedic scenes which I thought made it stronger overall.
