View Full Version : Banner of the Stars

I never got around to picking up (or watching) the various Banner of the Stars titles (although I did see Crest of the Stars). Are they worth picking up now? And how similar are they to Crest?
Oh, and with respect to Crest - I liked the intense focus on developing the setting, and a couple of the early episodes (such as episode one with Jinto in the car, and the later one with Lafiel discussing family). But later on, the constant need to narrate everything got a bit tedious, and the station and planetside arcs ran a bit long for my tastes.

I bought all 3 series, and sold them. They were interesting but had no replay value. All of the series felt pretty much the same so if you enjoyed the first then pick up the rest. The style and tone don't really change.

I find the first Banner of the Stars worthy of watching and rewatching. However, BotS II doesn't have the same intensity; it is more like Crest of the Stars.

I really wish the BotSIII OAV could have been released over here.
But yeah, the first BotS was probably the best. I just love the whole epic feel of this universe in general. Wish we had other anime series like this one.

I enjoyed them all, although I would say that Crest was the best of the lot, and then the 1st Banner series.

I may be prejudiced, ahem, but I think both Banner of the Stars series (I, too, wish that Banner III would be released in region 1) and the Crest of the Stars are great, though in different ways.
Throughout all three, we see the growing relationship between Jinto and Lafiel set against a complicated space opera background, but the angle of view changes from one series to the next. Crest starts us off with a close focus on our two protagonists having several adventures that, while difficult for them yet small on a galactic scale, still have repercussions that carry through the ensuing struggle and series. Banner of the Stars widens the angle so we see our protagonists as just one part of large-scale fleet actions that typify the war to end war: the relationship between Jinto and Lafiel deepens and a cadre of loyal companions of the pair emerges, but much of the series shows the always entertaining Abh admirals and their tactical gambles. Banner II sharply narrows the focus onto primarily just one adventure of Jinto and Lafiel, but the two work individually for most of these episodes. For me the second Banner series is the most stressful to watch as a result.

This series is a classic. They are all must-see and all great in their own ways.

Crest & Banner I are the best. Banner II is for if you like the first two, for there are some really good moments worth waiting for.
