Is Battle Athletes worth picking up? And just how different is it from Battle Athletes Victory?

Yes.

And there are a good number of changes that were made from OVA (BA) to Victory (TV) including a much larger cast and a few other surprises.

I found both the OVA and TV series to each be distinctly charming in their own rights... thoroughly enjoyed both. The changes that distinguish the two make for some interesting and entertaining differences.

BAV is the better series and has imo better character designs. But the BA OVAs have arguably a better and cooler version of Kris. The OVA version of Anna, on the other hand... :P

Personally I own BAV but never felt compelled to buy the OVA series (I borrowed it from a friend to watch it), so I'd say get it if you want to.

This is one of the first anime series I have seen on DVD. Pretty much, each version has its own charm. The OVA is more focused on Akari trying to win through training and adversity. The TV is more focused on comedy. In any case, both are worth watching.

I agree. I found both series to be quite enjoyable; in fact, I make it a point to time my watchings of them with the Winter & Summer Olympic Games when they occur. Definitely worth watching IMO.

BAV 1st "Ichigo" arc is equal to BA OVAs for poignancy IMO (though the OVA Kris is best!).

BAV 2nd arc is not so impressive, & the 3rd makes a mockery of all the values from both OVAs & TV 1st & 2nd.

Go for the OVA set first.....>
