OP is kinda...relaxing? Gundam OPs shouldn't be relaxing.
Anyway, Flit's a pretty decent character, still not a fan of the character designs, but he doesn't bug me or anything.
Blah blah UE, Gundam goes out and defeats one, the attack continues.
Emily's cute, seems she's the main love interest.
ED is...much better than the OP.
Edit: lol, just realized the ED is Kuribayashi Minami. No wonder I like it. MAKE A NEW *HiME SHOW SUNRISE!

-"I'll entrust your fate to Gundam." Setsune F. Seiei just became a single father. Heh.
-"Hello. My name is Flit Asuno. You killed my mother. Prepare to die."
-OP has a good beat. Doesn't feel very Gundamy to me. Guess I'm just too used to rock/techno/faster Gundam tunes.
-Irresponsible old man! You are not allowed to touch my Gundam. My Gundam! Go put that back before you break it."
-Heir to the great lineage of the Anaheim Electronics family.
-Dick is the grandson of Jiron Amos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpoIiK8gk8c). *nods*
-Flit would be two steps from a paranoid conspiracy theorist, if giant robot dragons hadn't stepped on his mother and put him on the revenge road.
-Surprise! Enemies attack and Flit was right. *initiate standard Gundam first episode launch sequence*
-Now you think a weapon would be a good idea? After you left the hanger filled with mobile suit guns.
-Dragons leak alot of energy instead of blood.
-Yay I got 100 exp.
The character designs are very GEAR Fighter Dendoh. I like that. Also like that this isn't some random kid who stumbles into the cockpit of the titular robot. He helps build the damn thing. Which is a nice change. Even if the results are the same. Very standard Gundam first episode, but I liked it.

Episode 1:
- Haha, a Gundam OP from the AnoHana OP guys? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...?
- Drrr's Mikado is not the voice I expected for Flit but it'll probably work. Heard him last night in KimiBoku too.
- Unknown Enemy. Well, that's pretty straight to the point.
- Emily~ She's cute. I like her hair. And I hope she doesnn't die.
- Flit is lead engineer on the Gundam? Huh. So we have a Gundam that will be piloted by the person who built it. And not just, like, some mad scientist piloting a super-mecha in some homicidal outburst, but the actual main character.
- Nobody believes Flit. Surely the GunDragons won't come here! Uh huh. Sure.
- Right on cue.
- Man, so much for your heroic moment, Largan. I actually thought you'd die right away though.
- And Flit does his thing. But it's not over!
I wasn't paying a lot of attention to the OP but Emily is really prominent in the ED, which is awesome. I thought this was a fun first episode, and I looove Emily. <3

Um, well, Emily's cute.
Can't say the episode did much else to draw me in, and a lot of things bugged me. Maybe it will get better or I'll settle into things (i.e. I give up on a remotely realistic setting and just let go of things like logic) in a few episodes, but this is definitely the weakest first episode of a Gundam series I've seen.

Episode 2:
- You'd think colonies would be built to withstand more than a couple missiles. But the idea of basically pulling the core out of the main colony is pretty cool.
- Emilyyyyyy!
- New girl! She's cute too.
- ...Dique does not look old enough to have a driver's license.
- And we've wasted no time in establishing that the central Federation forces are jerks.
- Haha Emily is the best. Let us on the ship gramps. No questions asked.
- Not sure what Grudech is up to, unless he's with the UE.
- Yurin! Hayami Saori fuck yeah.
- An evolving mobile suit? That coudl be handy.
I really liked that episode. Yay for two cute prominent female characters. Bridge lady is nice too.

Oooh...looks like we have a newtype girl, and competition for Emily. Who do I root for? I like them both!
Anyway, this show is toyetic as all hell, even for Gundam, but pretty awesome.
They just need to get rid of that atrocious OP, I have suggestions, if they'd like to hear.
Oh, and Flit has passed the true trial for any boy who wishes to be a mecha pilot. He must enter battle while holding a girl on his lap.
HitokiriShadow
10-16-2011, 08:09 PM
Emily's pretty awesome.
And we get a cute new girl named Yurin. Who seems to be some sort of psychic/NewType.
Grodek was badass too. Though I think he has some ulterior motives/allegiances. Something seems to be up with him.
There seems to be something strange going on with White Base version Mk.10....
And the AGE system.... part if its kind of cool, part if its just a little too ridiculous, even for a Gundam show even more detached from reality than usual. And while this episode annoyed me less in how it portrayed Flit vs. adults, it was one of the two things that annoyed me in this episode. Flit's family seems to be in the mobile suit business and the Gundam seems to be related to that thing his mom gave him, so okay, fine, I can accept that. I was mainly annoyed in the first episode that the adults/government/military couldn't do a damn thing with it without him being there. But him inventing this ridiclous AGE system thing by himself? That's just.... really, really hard to accept.

-Xylophone music makes me feel nostalgic for 90s anime for some reason.
-If the Diva does not transform into some kinda robot I will eat my hat. Hell it looks just like the underside of Silverbolt (http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/toys/henkei/silverbolt/1627/1/39/).
-AGE Builder... Come up with a less toyetic name next time guys.
-HOLY SHIT! This Haro has a warp drive. It's three times faster than any previous Haro.
-Gundam has a giant storm trooper gun.
-Anime. Why you always gotta make the black guy an asshole? And Fonroid? That's a horrible name.
-Emily is one of the ballsiest Gundam girls. You better put her in a mobile suit some time.
-Grodeck does not play by your Federation rules. Set phasers to kill.
-A colony without some kind of a command bridge escape pod is a stupid idea guys.
-Why do you always have to have an empty super new battle ship just laying around Gundam? Sure it was cool 20 years ago. But now it's kind of ridiculous. Next time use a junker ship with a couple of instructors and a crew of trainees or an automated AI ship. Something new.
-Wait. Grodeck just wiped the computers crew logs and beat the shit out of everyone who was supposed to be on it? I take it back Gundam. This is awesome.
-The UEs make Zetton (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dm_3N6CgoEY) noises.
-Urine... Her name is Urine. God damn it someone with a command of the english language needs to be hired as a consultant on Gundam shows.
-That was a most undignified way to get the drop in an enemy unit. Surprise decompression toss.
-The AGE Builder is just the world's largest 3D printer with an AI construction set. So with enough raw materials this Builder alone can fabricate an army of robots faster than the enemy can shoot them down. This is a weapon of mass destruction.
-Next episode: A Char is coming.
The super science nonsense Replicator could prove to be an insane concept, but this episode was better than the last. Mainly thanks to Emily being a tough girl and Grodeck being badass. New Newtype girl is okay too.

Emily proves herself to be your typical stuck-up egotistical female lead, whereas Yurin is ~lovely~ and has more than a hint of Kuroneko about her character design. I know who I'm cheering on.
Oh yeah, robots. Kudos for coming up with a Deus Ex Machina plot device that actually makes some sense.

Flit sure was a little slow on picking up that Yurin wasn't exactly normal.
So the initial battle comes to an end, and the Diva just barely manages to pull out the central core in time. Flit didn't quite manage to take out the last enemy though, and something interesting happened right at the end. Just what on earth where they after? Their goal didn't seem to be the Gundam or Diva (the typical reasons for the opening salvos in a Gundam series) or to just kill the people living in it (though their preferred initial approach seems to be to intentionally slaughter as many civilians as possible). Their goal seems to have been the destruction of the colony itself, suggesting there's something else in the colony they want gone. Since this isn't the first colony they attacked, it seems to be something on multiple, maybe all colonies. Maybe something about whatever they're using for power generators.
There is something that would make their apparent love of slaughtering people make sense. If their goal is to kill specific people like Yurin, or to kill all of the colonists to prevent humans from becoming NewTypes. That was my assumption up until the UE unit left them alone at the end, right when it was at the point it could have easily accomplished killing everyone. Though I suppose it could have left for some other reason than that it had accomplished its goal of destroying something in the colony and no longer needed to fight.
And, uh, a young clone of Commander Bartzur (or whatever his name was) wakes up at the end?

Episode 3:
- More battlin'. Yurin is <3 <3 even if I'm still more an Emily guy.
- Ooh, bloody. Poor Bruzar.
- So what's the name of Yurin's future diary?
- And the enemy leaves. Well, lots of possible explanations for that.
- Of course THE GUNDAM must save them from one final trial.
- Oh. Oh hey this is way more awesome. Old dude to the rescue!
- Yurin, come back! Well, he's got the ribbon, she'll be back soon.
Thought that episode was handled very well. Now with the introductory arc over, time for things to really start.

-The future. Space. Colonies. Where people are born. And live. And die!
-Don't tell me the percentage of success unless it is under 2 and thus require a Yuusha to pull them off.
-Urine, blocking the view of the pilot is a bad idea when things are shooting at you.
-Black Zetton custom UE is a wily one.
-Commander Bruzar is a bruiser.
-Bruzar is fine. He still has one hit point left.
-Gundam pilot's first mentor is dead. How many more will Flit lose?
-Too much fire. But the colony does impressively tear itself apart.
-A Puru clone with white hare awakens. She's a man baby! And has tiny cat ears?
Where is Dendoh Robo? The OP promises a red muscley Boxer Gundam with revolver arms! Still interesting change to never see anything from the enemy point of view in a Gundam show. You have to try to guess WTF they are up to. But that will change in the second generation I'm sure.

So the mysterious man that woke up in the last episode is on the Diva and he's known as The White Wolf. And he's kind of a pompous dick.
They have a duel, but it gets interrupted by a real enemy and in the process of fighting them, they develop some respect for each other. Very briefly, at least.
More interestingly, Grodek has figured out something important about the UEs.
Sadly, Yurin was completely absent in this episode.

-Gorgeous deliscious albino Char?
-Must be hard to keep a Haro PC on your desktop.
-Grodeck was crying? He's to manly to cry.
-Wait, Nora already detatched and all the kids are still on board? Why? Not even a half assed standard contrivance why these kids have to stay on board because of a fight blah blah? I mean they let the little Newtype girl off ship.
-Damn right Wolf. Thatnks for being the sensible one.. for a crazy space narcisist.
-Wolf is in your hangar, claiming your mobile suit.
-Wolf is the main character now. You're all playing by his rules.
-Wait why does Flit get to use the Gundam? Shouldn't they launch in identical Genoaces to see who is better in a fair fight? Flit is a cheater.
-Genoace design just looks like a second rate Leo to me.
-Gundam fight... Ready... GOOO!
-Flit is a panicky little fellow.
-Huh. The Jovian Lizards have a cloaking device or a warp drive.
Wolf is shaping up to be a magnificent bastard. Grodek is a conniving captivating captain. Why are the kids the main characters again?

And Emily's Sayla transformation is complete~
Fun ep thanks to Wolf and the last scene with Grudek, was oddly pleasing that Flit and Wolf were attacked during their little duel though, do you really have time to messing about like that.
So the mysterious man that woke up in the last episode is on the Diva and he's known as The White Wolf. And he's kind of a pompous dick.
I guess that was you writing "chronologically" just after he appeared in the episode? By the end of it, he is clearly Top Tier awesome, imo. Just the right amount of pompous dick-ness, maybe.
I was also surprised and dismayed to see completely nothing more of Yurin. D:

Grodek continues to be the most interesting character in the show. Now he blackmails the guy running the port in the colony they dock at to avoid getting arrested.
Then we meet a kid named Desil, who's clearly part of the UE, along with a few... "attendants" that mention something about "EDEN". The kid pulls off a Gundam theft and has a perfect chance to take out Flit and Woolf and escape with.... and then he returns it. And he's actually allowed off the ship for some reason. Well, whatever, I'm just glad we've finally gotten some small glimpse of people from the UE side.
Sadly, still no Yurin.

-Bright was always getting in trouble with military command. But accidentall. Grodek is actively being a loose cannon.
-Electronic Arts will still exist in the future.
-Grodek is an super hakker!
-Segue of the future!
-Flit nearly runs over the Devil. Of course you should invite him back to the ship Flit. There's no way this could turn out badly.
-What did the UEs bribe their way into the colony? WTF.
-Emily: "OBJECTION! (http://i688.photobucket.com/albums/vv248/Wilddaigo/Ace%20Attorney%20-%20Character%20Animations/Phoenix%20Wright%20animations/phoenix-deskslam.gif)"
-Flit's little Devil friend is an orphan. Aww. He's still going to try to steal your Gundam.
-In space the Devil can fly! Err Desil.
-Damn it grandpa. Take your mismatched character design out of this scene. You push me out of the show with your aesthetic failure.
-Gundamjacking in progress. I warned ya but ya wouldn't believe me. Oh he's just a harmless little Devil you said.
-Stop reminiscing about being touched by the Devil in the middle of a fight Flit.
-Bye bye Devil.
-Jovian lizards! One of them even has a mask. More like Mister Bushido mask than a Char mask but it works.
Desil. Man you guys aren't subtle about names at all. I bet the masked Jovian lizard is named Meflisto or Belzirub.

So apparently there was a character poll (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2011-11-14/gundam-age-character-poll-won-by-vargas-yurin) to determine which two characters (one male and one female) that will be used to determine which two characters get special illustrations in the first BD volume.
For the females, the winner was Yurin with a whopping 60% of the vote. Emily got 10%. Poor Emily.
The winner for the males was.... Vargas. What the fuck. Grodek isn't even in the top 3. :(

-Grizzled gruff Grodek has a family?
-HAD a family. You didn't have to rub it in unstable picture frame. We got it.
-Woolf is going out to visit a casino ship from Macross 7. Atleast that's what it looks like. But it's a racing robot mechanics shop or something like that.

-Inter gang warfare with giant robots inside a space colony seems like a really bad idea.
-Damn it Haro. You are a horrible baby sitter!
-Damn it little girl! Don't play near robots. haven't you ever seen Gundam Victory or F91? They will hilariously murder you.

Okay sure the "jovian lizard" pilots sneaking in cause they are just people, fine. But how do they keep smuggling giant dragon shaped robots inside colonies? Or have they just been building them inside every colony since Flit's mom died? I don't think any other Gundam show ever has had enemy mobile suits sneaking into EVERY colony undetected so bloody easily.

- Woolf and Flit come to a true understanding, to Emily's chagrin.
- Man what is Grodeck up to? I honestly have no clue. Well the most obvious answer is he has a bone ot pick with the UE, and between this ship and the Gundam he thinks he can do something about it. So if that requires stealing the battleship and manipulating everyone on board, so be it.
- He avoids arrest. But will he avoid Emily's wrath?
- Well that's one evil looking kid. Red hair, golden eyes, named Desil. >_>
- Emily is angry! Emily pounds on your desk! Emily knows your secrets! But Emily can't do anything about it. Awww, Emily. at least you're adorable. I love her outfit. And her gloves. I'm getting faint flashbacks to my infatuation for Akari's gloves in Aria. Emily! <3 <3 <3
- Bitch, you just got gundamjacked.
- Oh. Right. So Desil is like an evil, not-cute Yurin.
- Haha silly mask guy. I;d say Mister Bushidou mask but I'm sure the same style was used in one of the previous hundred Gundams. Guess that group is the one Yurin presumably escaped from. Maybe? Not sure if she was on the run when Flit found her, or wandering around there for some other reason.
Man, Emily's character design is one of my favorite of the season. I do hope they don't ruin her character by only having her fight to get Flit to live a normal life. Get this girl in a mobile suit, damnit!

- Both, when an illegal arms trade is proposed, I guess. Grodek is really going all out.

Those two goons and their stock lines are really annoying. Not just because they're inherently stupid and unfunny, but because it beats the viewer of the head with a reminder of who this show's target audience is and screams "Laugh seven year olds, laugh dammit!"
The episode was basically more of the same stupid crap from last time and nothing remotely interesting happened until the last two minutes, and that only just barely qualified as "remotely interesting". The rest of the episode was more juvenile depictions of conflict and preachy moralizing. Not that Gundam has ever been particularly mature (the televised entries, at least) or the pinnacle of writing or depictions of war, those things have always been an issue to some degree, but this series just isn't even trying.
Meanwhile, we still know absolutely nothing about the UE, the main enemies, and their behavior continues to be completely nonsensical. And if the show is going to be four cour and split its time evenly among the generations (and it may not), then we're about half-way through the current generation. But there's been almost zero plot movement or anything of interest happening.

-A truck full of children. :\ Once again I have to ask children if they know what happens to children (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0eIAoJdOPc)in mecha shows.
-Welcome to a sit in at Occupy Zalam Street.
-They're throwing more than teargas at this protest.
-That's no Zaku boy. It's the Don and his yesmen are cosplaying as a Gouf and Zakus...
-No Grodek. Bad Grodek. Do not let all these little rugrats onto the Diva. They are an infestation you might never be able to get back out.
-Wait... his name is Don Boyage!? FUCKING PUNS!
-Gundam's spoiler makes it run faster...
-fear not Flit, Gurren Largan will save us. With his Stormtrooper gun.

Gundamn it! Mecha shows are supposed to be fun. Even ones aimed at children. This... this is not very fun. It's slow plodding predictable and annoying. Even when Gundam is overly talky and political there are atleast interesting quirky characters yelling at each other about total war and pacifism. This is just a toy commercial.

Oh, hey, something of plot value finally happens. In the last 30 seconds.
I cannot believe they spent three fucking episodes on this horrible storyline. I could have skipped episode 7 entirely (and most of episode 8, for that matter) , and would not have missed anything of the slightest value. They could have taken out all of the worst parts (the whole stupid hamfisted Zalam/whoever conflict and the awful dialog it produced) and had plenty of time for the little bit of plot that mattered and the attack that let them advertise their new toy.
The show feels like a lost relic of the 80s or 90s, like someone at Sunrise found a series plan for show they scrapped and then someone decided to resurrect it and give it the Gundam name and a 2011 Gundam budget. It's now a sort of real robot/super robot hybrid, but in a bad way. The show is straddling the line, too mundane and real-robotish for anything super robot-ish to be good (i.e. it can't be ridiculous and over-the-top, which is basically what makes super robot any good) but super robot-ish side is too silly for a real robot series and more super robot style plot elements are keeping the show from being able to tell a half decent story (mysterious allegedly alien enemies we know nothing about instead of two human factions fighting over their differences; until this episode, there was exactly one human unit that was worth a damn fighting. Now there's two.).

-No this isn't a real fight Mr Voyage. The UE is toying with the last of you pathetic squabbling children.
-Gundam Jump! Gundam Knee to the Groin!
-More UEs in the colony. There guys better have freaking teleporters or Portals to explain how they get so many mobile suits inside colonys with no one ever noticing.

What the heck are the UEs ever trying to accomplish anyway? Their attacks seem random and pointless. Except when they were looking for Urine. Are they just trying to ferret out Newtypes to collect?

You take that back. 80s & 90s robot shows were faster paced and more exciting at the start than this show. This show is trying to be to light hearted and kid friendly when the core plot of seemingly ruthless sneaky aliens should be darker. It's not enough of either to be much fun. Hell there are other shows aimed at young boys that manage to be alot darker when they try to be. Like GEAR Fighter Dendoh and GaoGaiGar (even if they were both mostly silly super robot fun).
This show needs to dump Flit and friends to focus on battle hardened Grodek & Woolf waging war upon unseen alien entities. Or go whole hog to make the part changing super robot stuff faster and more playful. As it is we are just waiting for the episode where OMG Flit finds out UEs are people. THEY'RE PEOPLE!

- They need to send Dique back home.
- Oh, good, Mardonna takes a liking to Flit. I thought we were going to get some silly duel to prove who is better.
- Hahha, oh god, so yet another way for the UE to infiltrate. This time it was brought intentionally by someone else, obviously the... whatshisname they mentioned before. So we've established a human link to the UE at least.
- Oh and this pretty clearly links Desil to the UE too. He's watching the fight and calls it off once he gets bored.
- Emily gets a bit of advice from Mardonna's wife, and I think we're on the way to Emily dropping her objections (for now) to Flit fighting.
- Turns out Yark Dole, guy who left the UE suit with Mardonna, is the masked guy who came to collect Desil.
- Grodek reveals his plans to the crew, and the fact that he's not the legitimate captain of the Diva. And when everyone gets angry, Emily defends him.
- Everyone makes the choice to stay on the Diva and become essentially a privateer force outside of Federation control.
I think the emotional conflict Emily is dealing with is definitely the most interesting aspect of the show right now. She essentially made Grodek's case to the whole crew for him, because she feels that he's right. But in doing so she's also guaranteed Flit stays involved in a technically illegal private war. Just a few episodes ago she was adamantly opposed to him getting into the Gundam at all. She's still really confused about her feelings, but talking to Mardonna's wife seems to have given her a goal to work towards - try as hard to stand beside Flit as he does to fight the UE. Emily is far and away my favorite right now.
This episode was way better than the Fardain arc. Too bad the two Fardain losers will still be around as part of the force, but they should be playing much smaller roles.

Boy, it sure is convenient to be able to get the Gundam anywhere you want it in about 15 seconds.
Exactly what use are those Euba and Zalam ships going to be? I guess Grodek just wants some cannon fodder. It's pretty well established that only the Gundam and Woolf's new mobile suit are capable of even scratching the UEs (which is one of the things I hate most about this show), though whether non-Gundam units can take a hit from them or not seems to depend on whether or not Woolf of Flit is piloting them.
It's a shame Laraparly won't be a regular character.
Since the Gundam got its limb upgrade a few episodes ago by the AGE system acted on its own, I've suspected that maybe the UE were actually created by another AGE unit and that the ultimate enemy may end up being a/the AGE system. The end of this episode adds to my suspicion. It started out making guns, thing limb/frame upgrades for the Gundam, now its making god knows what, but what's to stop it from making entire mobile suits that don't require pilots? Who, exactly, had the brilliant idea to create a self-sustaining weapon manufacturing device with no apparent limitations or means of human input?
Anyway, the episode wasn't particularly good due to general problems with the show, but it was vastly better than the utter shit the show spewed out for the past few episodes.

That was the most boring Gundam giant space battle I've ever seen. It was just.... so lifeless. It's like the show's staff wasn't making the slightest bit of effort to make the battle exciting. "Whatever, just make sure the average length of time between suits exploding is less than 20 seconds. The kids will eat it up."
It is also now nearly impossible to accept Grodek as being remotely competent as a commander or strategist. The show has, somewhat surprisingly, been very consistent: the only units that ever do any damage to the UE are the Gundam and Woolf's new unit. Grunt units have yet to do any actual damage of any sort. This was kind of a major plot point at the beginning and nothing has happened to give Grodek or anyone else any reason to think this has changed. And yet, Grodek's battle "strategy" here was to..... throw everyone at the UE and hope they would somehow do some damage while he sat in back and watched.
Upgrading the weapons of his little mini-army has apparently not occurred to him or anyone else in the show. Even though its clearly possible and must not take much work since Woolf was able to get it done in less than 24 hours. Hell, there hasn't even been anything to suggest A) that only the Gundam can use the rifle that the AGE system made or B) that the AGE system has any sort of production limit. Hell, if nothing else, surely he could wait another day or two while Woolf's mechanic friend makes some rifles for him.
And the Eula and Zalam grunts are fucking idiots. That was the most painfully obvious "deception" ever. Falling for that required them to pretend to not see the very enemy they were firing at. What the fuck.
The UE killing the soldier in the completely disabled unit was really, awkwardly bad. It was incredibly heavy handed in its attempt to be dramatic and shocking, but also completely ineffectual. And expecting me to feel moved in any way whatsoever by that scene is, frankly, insulting. Why this is supposed to shock Flit OR the audience? The UE's very first appearance is to cause as much damage as possible, most of it on civilians. In fact, slaughtering non-combatants often seems to be the only point of their action. I can forgive Flit being shocked at this to an extent, since he never really saw it directly before, but it is completely absurd to try to use that scene to try to get something out of the viewer.
In the end, Grodek's forces accomplish pretty much nothing except losing a huge chunk of their cannon fodder while showing that Grodek has no interest in actually doing anything in battle other than approving the use of new Gundam parts. Naturally, this convinces the members of the Cannon Fodder Brigade to throw away their lives on another mission with him.
Oh, and now Flit has figured out that the enemies are "human." This show has mostly just made me sad with how little effort is being put into the writing (what did mecha fans do to piss off Japan so much that they inflict both this and Guilty Crown on us in the same goddamn season?), but the next battle is pretty much guaranteed to make very, very angry.

Yurin!!! It's so nice to get to see her again. Too bad there's only a couple of episodes left before it switches to the next generation. :/
This episode also seems to pretty much lock in Yurin as Flit's end girl. Unless she somehow gets killed, of course.
Grodek also reveals an interesting bit of information: the Federation knows what the UE are and are hiding their identity for some reason. This gives me hope that at least one of the future generations will have a more interesting conflict, with part of the Federation splitting off and fighting the rest. It also explains why the Federation had been acting so stupid: it was intentional.
Anyway, this episode was actually pretty decent. Best episode since... 3-ish. Certainly since that godawful civil war arc.

-Bye Yurin. Nice colony you got here. Be a shame if something "happened" to it.

Episode 10:
While this is still far from the most amazing show out there, I rather liked two aspects of this episode:
1) The tactics actually make sense. It's been established that Zalam/Euba cannot hurt the UE, and this episode doesn't try to retcon that. Z&E instead act as distractions/cover fire/meat shields while the more advanced suits get the kills.
2) The body count. Not just faceless suits exploding, but also one of the two annoying leaders in a triple suicide run that turns out to be, surprisingly, utterly utterly ineffective and a total waste of efforts. And we see some defenseless pilot pleading for his life but getting murdered anyway. The actual battle isn't super impressive visually, but at least it's not being dumbed down or sugarcoated.

- "Someone died in battle again." Haha um yes, a few dozen someones it seems like, Flit. I can'tt ake Boyage seriously as a "dead mentor" character, he was just some low level crime lord on some backwater colony until shortly before his death.
- And we have two love triangles. Emily-Flit-Yurin and Largan-Millie-Woolfe. I think Largan has the shortest life expectancy of any of them by far.
- I suppose if we're stuck with one of the Fardain guys staying in the cast, having it not be Boyage and his goons is a vast improvement.

- So, I get that colonies are gigantic and all, but how does one recreate a mountain range inside of one?
- "We were saved by his brave actions." Hahaha no you were not, he just rammed into a brick wall and didn't make a dent. He died completely and utterly in vain.
- So Yurin is back. I still like Emily more, but Yurin is incredibly adorable. And she hasn't spoken in so long that I totally forgot she's voiced by Hayami Saori. Because of all the Yurin/Yamada jokes, I had Hirohashi Ryou in mind.
- I refuse to take the Federation investigator tailing Grodeck seriously.

Well, the Diva suits had scored quite a few kills on UE suits by that point, and while the technological supremacy of the UE has been emphasized so far, they're probably not completely immune to heavy and sustained fire over time. I think when non-Diva suits have been encountering the UE, it hasn't been in particularly large numbers. The UE seem to prefer infiltrating colonies and catching people off guard. That and Desil had gotten beaten up, so they could have retreated for that.

Yeah, I wasn't entirely sure how to read that. Did he know it was coming all alone a la a Lando in Empire Strikes Back sort of situation, or what? I initially said he "sold her out" but maybe that's not true. I mean, the UE only came to kidnap her after the Diva's fleet pushed them back, and it certainly seems like Desil was just lashing out to get revenge after his defeat, so it could have been a spur of the moment decision.

The use of the AGE system on the ship is highly questionable and I don't care enough about whatshisname who tried to sacrifice himself to care but it was a decent idea. I don't have anything major to complain about, which is a nice change.
Flit consciously using his Newtype powers to take out a dozen or so units at once was pretty cool.

Also, now that I think about it, this was the first time we'd seen any ship to ship combat between the UE and earth ships. Unless I'm forgetting something, up until that point, it was entirely mobile suit vs. mobile suit, or UE suits attacking earth ships. While earth suit weaponry are completely worthless against UE suits, that's not necessarily true for the ship cannons. It may be the difference between 0 HP of damage and 1 HP of damage, but that still matters. Like you said, those might actually be able to cause some significant damage if they hit enough.

Good grief, Gundam Age is seriously regressing in the female character department and Gundam shows are not exactly known for their thrilling handling of female characters.
I hope the next generation is handled a lot better than this one, but I see no reason to get my hopes up.

Well, judging by the cast and thumbnail descriptions (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2012-01-15/gundam-age-anime-2nd-generation-cast-revealed) (spoilers, of course), I'm...cautiously optimistic.

-They are stuffing an unconscious Yurin into a knock off GN-X (http://gundam.wikia.com/wiki/GNX-603T_GN-X) as a dummy plug aren't they.
-Random nameless crew members are dying. We have entered Terminal Tomino Mode.
-Playing with the Desil.
-Super mechanic & sexy wife!
-Wait the crappy Euba suits are actually damaging the UEs now? Huh.
-Desil does make a great enemy. He enjoys the hell out of combat.
-Okay Yurin's suit looks more like a Dunbine (http://www.mahq.net/mecha/dunbine/dunbine/dunbine.htm). A pretty pink Dunbine with an egg on it's feet.
-Largan's still alive. Well that can't last long.
-Oh it's a pink flowery Qubeley (http://gundam.wikia.com/wiki/AMX-004_Qubeley) wanna be. Wait, if Yurin isn't unconscious how are they forcing her to fight?
-She's working for the UE "because we say so"? . . .
-Or she's just an attack bit for the Desil. That's stupid but not as stupid as the alternatives.
-LALAH! . . . I mean YURIN!
-Don't worry Yurin. I'm sure clones of you will show up again sometime to say hi to Flit or his children.
-For a group of people that is really damn good at getting past spaceport security, the UEs have no fucking docking security of their own.
Huh Yurin did die. I guess once they started having you know plot and character development for Flit they just fell into the old Tomino tropes all the way.

I was about to argue that some of the oldest Gundam shows had much better female characters. Then I remembered that most of them were medically insane, stupidly naive, or just did things that made no damn sense except to make the male main characters have some emotional conflicts. But at least they saw some mobile suit action and accomplished things before they died.

Those were the units that Woolf's mobile suit builder friend brought. I couldn't tell if he brought additional guns for the other suits or not, though I don't think anything was mentioned about them.

Yeah, almost anything is better than what Emily, this show's Millay who's name I forget, and especially Yurin actually got. Sayla was at least a significant character, you had several women that were pilots and/or plot significant characters in Zeta and... I haven't seen ZZ. I was more thinking of Wing, SEED, Destiny, and 00 though. Whatever problems those series had, its really depressing to see it go from that in terms of female characters to this.
God this generation sucked so hard. The next one better be a hell of a lot better, in just about every area.
Well, I do know that if nothing else, there's one thing that will make the next gen slightly more bearable even if its just as bad in everything else: apparently one of the characters is voiced by Hanazawa Kana. Though if she gets treated as horribly as Yurin, that will just piss me off more.

Well, that certainly *sounds* promising, but going to keep my expectations low. Though its probably bound to be better simply because it would be really hard to be worse than this generation without just not having any female characters at all.
Sadly, just because they have a female pilot doesn't mean they'll make good use of her. She could easily end up being that generations Lagarn. And remember Lunamaria? Yeeeeeeeeah.... ;_;

Emily basically is Sayla. Sayla just had more episodes to spend with Amuro and feel more like she had a personality beyond liking the main character. ZZ is my favorite mix of interesting female characters. Even if some were still crazy and/or did irrational things. They didn't just feel like plot points as girls in Zeta did.

She was the main one I was thinking of, but there were others that were at least plot significant. From my vague memories of Wing, I'm pretty sure Lady Une was a decently well handled character. And whatever you think of Relena Peacecraft, she was at least pretty influential on the story.

-Flying inside an enemy asteroid base to face the final foe. Flit why are you trying to hard to be like Amuro? You're gonna kill somebody shooting straight up aren't you.
-Shouldn't the crew infiltrating the base be reacting to the UEs looking so human?
-Black Custom Big Zam! With a Zaku glue on top...
-Mecha triage Kiai!
-Lalah urine!
-Well that's one way to upen a door Flit.
-The UE should seriously fire their IT guys. Look at all those cables just running to random shit all over the walls. Have they never heard of WiFi?
-Will somebody shoot him already. It doesn't matter why he's a cackling madman.
-Martian colonists, ofcourse. I figured that out ten episodes go guys.
-Vegans... So this is a war of herbivores vs omnivores?
-Flit, you've become a bit of a racist.
-Oh the little elf boy is mister crazy pants's son.
-"My name is Grodek Ainoa. I killed your father. Prepare to wet your pants."
-After that YOU LEFT ELF BOY THERE!? Are you that big of a moron Grodek? You just made the main villain for Flit's son to fight in the next arc.
-"We won. We just murdered a bunch of mentally unstable diseased space colonists."
-Largan is still alive? And yet you guys killed Yurin. WTF! I want an eye for an eye!
-I half expected Grodek to shoot himself in the head after that happy dream.
-The War of Bat Extermination. What that really was Batman's secret asteroid base?
Grodek ends up being an idiot. But is reasonable enough to pay for his crimes. Flit has become an Anti-Vegan racist. The whole episode screamed of wanting to be the ending of the One Year War, only without Char or any of the memorable moments. The UE are no where near defeated but will content to laying low for 15 years when a new precocious boy can kick their ass a second time. This was a very disappointing episode. The Mars ray disease ,them standing there and letting 2 tone hair guy blowup the base, the red shirt bullet detectors(lucky they ran out of doors before they ran out of extras) and pretty much the rest of the show was all stupid but the worst part is there being colonies around mars for the last 150 years and no one noticed.Did the Feds destroy all telescopes and radio receivers somehow? It is flat out imposable to hide active colonies like that.

-New generation, hope it's better. New song, eh it's okay but slow. New OP animation, looks great. I think I see Masami Obari's hand in this. Especially when Gundam clashes with the Samus Aran looking UE.
-25 years have passed and basically nothing has changed since last episode.
-Adele's are the new GM. But uh shouldn't the AGE system have been mass produced by now so you could have a fleet of Gundams?
-Wow. Flit really did become a racist bastard. Vagan's are even human at all in his mind.
-Asemu Asano. He's twice the ass his father was.
-He rather handily kicks the tri-star deliquint's asses. But it still remains to be seen if he's a whiny little Camile or a take no shit Judau.
-A blond sister that looks even more like Sayla that Emily did. Is Ase-Asa going to try to be the next Char? "Asemu-nii-san!"
-Creepy big headed grandpa is still alive. What is he 100 now?
-Asemu Asano just turned 17. Excited to get his first car. But what if his dream car turns out to be a nightmare. When he gets the keys to his dad's old... giant robot! Coming this summer: Dude, Where's My Gundam?
-Flit keeps the Gundam in a stable next to his house behind a five story pile of hay...
-Transfer student The Heart Gallant? Err Zeheart Galatte. Man Gundam you ain't even trying with names in this series.
-The Heart gets to fight the school bully, Rob A-bus on his first day walking the halls. Poor bus boy suffers from cranial gigantism and obesity like Emily's grandpa.
-Twenty five fucking years and space colony security procedures are not fucking better. Vagan mobile suits just stroll right inside and start blowing shit up.
-Future girlfriend saved. Gundam acquired. Ase-Asa taking off!
Well I think I like Asemu more than his dad. But it's still kind of early to tell. Sadly it looks like women will play even less of a part than they did last time. Emily & sis just get shipped right off to the basement shelter and might never be seen again.

I'm betting that the person in the Feddie mobile suit that survived is the female pilot played by Koshimizu Ami, and Millie is the new captain of the Diva.
I would prefer that Unoa be the lead, not Asemu, but I don't mind him too much right now. I have no idea how they are going to have enough school-life stuff to justify whats in the ED though.

Apparently the Vagan's cloned Woolf.
Flit looks rather silly in those sunglasses.
Asem's okay. He's much more immediately relatable than Flit, I think. At the very least, I don't have some of the immediate issues I had with Flit. He clearly has some talent with building mobile suits, but its a reasonable level. He's not building a freaking Gundam and having complete control over what's done with it so that the adults in a freaking military base have to have his permission to do anything with it while generally making all of the adults look like idiots.
Asem's first battle is actually pretty good, probably the best minor fight (i.e. Gundam vs. very few enemies) yet in the show.
Too early to say much about Zeheart, but he looks like he'll be a decent character. The ED heavily suggests that the Asem/Zeheart relationship is going to be a major element, giving this generation something to potentially develop in an interesting direction and give it a stronger.... hmmm, (semi-)villain dynamic and emotional core, I guess. There will be an enemy with a face that we will, hopefully, come to care about and that the main character will have a relationship with, so this generation's villains aren't just crazy or revenge-fixated leftovers from last time.
Romary... sadly, she barely even showed signs of a personality in this episode. She was just a blushing school girl who didn't even know what a mobile suit was and had about five lines. There's time to fix that and perhaps there's something deeper there that maybe the show will actually make use of if we're lucky, but its not a good way to start off with her.
I'm cautiously optimistic about the show's general direction, but its done nothing to raise my expectations for its handling of the female characters from the gutter.

Well, the standards for "justifying" that are pretty low. I mean, look at the first ED. Emily-centric. She then did almost nothing for the entire generation other than make one speech to support Grodek.
And I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be the first Gundam ED that had almost nothing to do with war, fighting or anything that actually happened in the show. Wasn't one of the Gundam 00 EDs a bunch of shots of the pilots just hanging out and cutting each others hair?

-Hiding the GUNDAM in the yard of the former GUNDAM pilot's family estate is a horribly stupid way to keep the GUNDAM a secret guys. It's so stupid The Heart Gallant should have commented that it was impossible they would be that obvious.

-Why is Wolverine hanging out at a children's playground?
-Yes. Yes there might be books at Asemu's house that could help you improve your little robot.... You kids live in the future, how do you even know what a book is!? There's an app for that ya morons.
-Oh. Flit does have a library filled with old media "books" all about mobile suits. Plus a big leather couch and lots of real wood furnishings. Flit is an antiquarian.
-One horse and a pile of hay is the only security system guarding the Gundam. Morons.
-Rock `em sock `em mobile suits! Does this mean Hugh Jackman is somewhere near the ring making a double cameo?

-Wolverine is "sneaking" a Vegan mobile suit on a car carrier under a tarp that doesn't even cover it's feet and no one has noticed him. This colony deserves to blow up for having no police or military observation a few days after VEGAN TERRORISTS WITH ROBOTS TRIED TO WRECK THE COLONY. *facepalm*
-Oh look a robot right out side our window. Maybe we should pay attention to that. *sigh* Please step on Vargas for me.
-If Asemu can make it across town to get to the Gundam before Wolverine can walk his mecha 50 feet I will slap myself.
-You have your own mobile suit and you aren't helping why The Heart? Because Wolverine insists on being a loner?
-OW! It hurts when you slap yourself.
-Took ya long enough The Heart.
-The Vegans just got defeated by a sprinkler system... *facepalm 2 : face harder*
-Wolverine escapes to fight another day.
-Romary showing up makes you stop. Really? Why!? You barely know the weak little girl The Heart. It's not like she was talking loud enough to be heard in the middle of battle. She wasn't in your line of view. WHUT TEH FUQ!?
-Little late to move the Gundam now guys. Asemu just has to ride his bike further now.

So much wrong, don't even know where to start.
Also, I refuse to believe that a girl with that haircut is considered the "School Beauty". That violates at least three different anime laws.
Also, watching the OP, I'm confronted with the fairly shocking thought that the female pilot is probably Dique's daughter. What the hell.
Edit: Oh, and I can't decide whether Zeheart's reminding me more of Tieria or Koyomi, it sorta depends on what scene it is. But either way its really distracting.

So the Asuno security is too tight for his spy friends to do something, but he can just walk in broad daylight from the house to the barn and then starts using his tool in the middle of barn where anyone walking around outside could see him. Yeah, that's some pretty tight security.
But then it becomes clear that the spy guy is just incredibly incompetent. Can't even take out two guys on a truck, and decides to use his hands to tear open the barn rather than any sort of weapon.
And apparently the mobile suit competition is right next to the Asuno estate, since it took Asemu less than a minute to get there and clearly no more than that had transpired by the time he arrived unless Vegan spy dude just stood there twiddling his thumbs for all of it.
So the show wasted no time in proving that the crappy writing hasn't improved any in this generation. And it continues to do nothing to give me any hope of getting to see Romary get to do anything outside of love triangle issues. At least the broader strokes of the story are okay so far.

- Woolfe has a girlfriend. She's a bit tall, and kind of... metallic.
- Know what I've never liked in space battles? How firepower gets concentrated in a narrow area, but somehow creates explosions a million kilometers out in either direction around the target. Why are things blowing up to to the left and right? Nothing was fired in that direction! I swear, every single space-based anime does that. It's the most bizarre thing.

No escape capsule, not even any debris left to be floating around in. There's literally nothing. If that's not a death I have no damn idea what it would take to kill someone. I mean how can they spin that one? C'mon, I really like her but she has to be dead. They left themselves no reasonable outs there.
- Flit. Do it. Kill him. Don't wuss out, don't... goddamnit. Him killing Desil was exactly what this show needed, but it pulled its punches there. So kill Yurin and spare Desil? Bah.
- Still a good fight though, and a lot more emotion and violence than we've gotten from this show in general.
- Uh how many ground troops do they really have if even the captain and his comms operatives have to grab rifles and invade?
That was a pretty cool episode. Definitely sucks that Yurin died, I would have loved to see what an older Yurin looked like. But I was always way way more into Emily. I'll only get really upset if she kicks the bucket...

- "Human!?" Uhhhhhh yeah. Well, actually, I think I remember Grodeck saying something to Flit about hiding that.
- Alright, yeah, it was just Flit and Grodeck who knew. Woolfe had no idea too.

But it looks awesome! Well it is more suited to ridiculously fun Super Robot shows. It might be possible for stuff hot in direct line of the beam to blow up from: A) The heat from the beam dissipating out and overheating suits not directly in it's part (but that range would be small). B) Shrapnel and radiation from what's in the beams path flying out and hitting other robots causing a chain reaction. C) Bullshit. -Goodbye fat boy. I hope we never see you again. For your own sake. if you show up again it would just be for the writers to brutally murder you.
-Graduation girls clutching their diplomas in front of them just look like metermaids holding guns.
-Asemu's horrible speech is thankfully interupted by some military police. It's that bad.
-It's been a year and a half since The Heart arrived and now they take him in for suspicion of being a spy. Little late guys.
-See Romary I told you. Now your a hostage and closer to death.
-Or not. You don't understand how hostages work do you Wolverine?
-What is this... friendship?
-Romary is so useless she can't even walk for herself anymore.
-Woolf! I've missed you. I see your manliness has increased to sideburns power.
-The Heart manages to kick Asemu's Gundam ass. Barely.
-What a shock Asemu. Your friend who you totally trust isn't who you thought he was.
-"Mister Gallant... you stole my heart."
I hate this show so much. Which makes it easy to comment about. Gundam fights are still entertaining enough. But man the rest of it is written by some old misogynist who who never even thinks of how you would get a 30 foot robot into a sealed heavily regulated environment in space.

So we're jumping to graduation and skipping the rest of the high school happy times.
Oh hey, by the way, you're doing a commencement speech. Right now. Oh, we didn't tell you? Sucks to be you.
Surprise piggy back ride! cue smiles and laughing to show that the bully and hero have reconciled .... god this show is stupid.
See, this is why springing a speech on someone 30 seconds before you expect them to give it is stupid. But of course, if you're an anime hero, you can just say something about friendship, eternal memories, love and justice and everyone will cheer for you like its the greatest speech ever. (Though maybe they were just cheering that his speech was less than 30 seconds long so they could finally go home after an hour or three of sleep-inducing formalities.)
And then military police crash the party..... Oh god. The stupid. It hurts. Please make it stop. ;_;
Now Zeheart reveals himself as the Vagan pilot to Asem.
And thus ends three pointless and astoundingly stupid episodes of Gundam Age: The High School Years.

The best part is that they have apparently done zero investigating the entire time. They're *starting* their investigation of him, a year and half later, with arrest. As opposed to, you know, investigating.
"Yeah, that timing sure is funny. We could have put some tails on you to see if you were doing anything suspicious or maybe looked into where the hell you came from before we let you know that we were on to you. But naaaah, we'll just sit on our asses for over a year and then arrest you in the most disruptive, dramatically convenient time possible.
Oh shit, a guy with a gun. There's three of us, but lets ALL go after the guy with the gun, who could not *possibly* be trying to be a distraction to lure us away from the suspect."

And at least I care about some of the characters enough for them to piss me off.

"That's okay, we assumed you would fail, which is why we only sent two absurdly incompetent 'agents' to do it. Even though you've accomplished nothing of note, have zero command experience since your mission had nothing to do with commanding people or engaging in conventional warfare at any level and have only the tiniest bit of battle experience of any sort, we're making you commander of our Earth assault forces."
Why does Asemu call Vargas "Vargas"? It's really weird to call your grandfather by their first name.
Unoa is the best character in the current cast. I'd lament that she's too young to join the school Asemu is going to and stay with the cast, but the show has no intention of doing anything interesting with people that don't have a penis anyway, so it wouldn't make a difference. It's not like Romary is ever going to amount to anything just because she's in the military academy with Asemu. She has a better chance of becoming this generation's Yurin.
Now we meet a cute new girl named Arisa. Oh, she's Fatso's daughter. She's already a lot more fun that Romary.
Romary gets to be a bridge bunny. Why hello there, Noto Mamiko. .... Man, Noto and Hanazawa as bridge bunnies should get me a looooot more excited than this. But Romary has almost no personality and AGE hasn't yet given me a reason to think its going to do anything fun with its bridge bunnies.
Well, at least the troops aren't Zieg Zeon'ing him. But they only seem to be bothered by his age, not his complete lack of experience, skill or any reason at all to be their commander. Noooo, they're just jealous of his youth.
You mean it took the AGE system 25 fucking years to make a second Gundam. And it was the tiny bit of battle data that Asemu provided? Not the vastly larger pool of data from Flit's fights two decades ago?
"We're letting you be the pilot of the military's single best mobile suit despite you're almost complete lack of experience just because you're Flit Asuno's son. But don't expect any special treatment just because you're Flit's son, you hear me?"
Arisa is already more fun that all of the rest of the girls (save Unoa, perhaps) combined.
Jesus, its one episode and Arisa has already been saved at least three times. Notably more than either of her male counterparts. She's also the only one who's suit was visibly damaged.
Now Asemu's going through that annoying "disobeying orders and being a brat about it" phase, though at least he calmly accepted his punishment after his initial "but we defeated them" protest.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Still has its stupid parts, but definitely a huge improvement over the awful High School Years stuff. Arisa should at least get a semi-decent amount of screentime since she's allowed to pilot a mobile suit, and she's easily the best girl in the show of either age (with Unoa being the only one that's remotely in competition for the spot). Though there are certainly some issues regarding the show's handling of her that could become a big problem.

-So another year or more has passed now? Asemu graduated from military training he had off screen.
-So the crazy martian leader lord Ezelcant is already a really old man in this show. If he survives to the next generation he'll be 90.
-Hi Unoa. Bye Unoa. I hope we never see you again for your own sake. Unless you end up marrying The Heart and your kid becomes the hero of the next generation.
-So The Heart is in commander of the invasion force for shits and giggles. Because all he has accomplished so far is failing at his mission to get the Gundam.
-A GIRL! In the military!? Welcome to the cast Arisa. I'll pray for you daughter of kid who's name I can't remember.
-Oh right. Dick. That was your name. Hi Zeta.
-Woolf! *swoon*
-Those two nameless recruit guys are going to die so hard.
-Welcome back knock-off White Base. Will you finally turn into a robot this generation?
-Why the fuck isn't Woolf piloting the new Gundam? Why the fuck doesn't he have a gundam of his own? Asemu can play with his dad's old Gundam.
-They left port before the new Gundam was finished. THAT IS NOT HOW THE MILITARY WORKS!
-Asemu is irresponsible. But his Gundam's speed and power make up for his failings.
So the haven't used the AGE system to mass produce more Gundams and more AGE systems why exactly? They fucking had 20 years. At least Woolf and space combat made this episode better.

- A year and a half, jeeze. But hey, the military is actually doing their job for once. They discovered Zehart was a spy. Finally. Of course they can't do anything without coming off like jerks.
- Wow, I take back anything i said about the MPs being competent. Okay so some guy in the audience has a gun - that absolves Zeheart how? Can there only be one spy? It's not obvious he was protecting Zeheart? Why would he draw attention to himself otherwise?

- Romary joined the military? Oh jeeze. I'd think they plan to kill her off like Yurin too, but Emily is the one who survived generation one so who knows. Maybe any new girl would be the one to die.
- ...Right on cue. Hello Arisa. Koshimizu Ami! Man, HanakAna and Koshimizu for the girls this arc. Nice.
- Looks like Arisa might actually get to do something. Wouldn't that be amazing? Guess shes doomed to die now.
- Oh god. Ohhhhhhh god. Yeah now I remember from the OP. She's Dique's kid. :sd: I wonder if that will shield her from dying.
- ...Mamiko on the bridge?
- And Romary too. So that's where they put her.

Hmm, promo art has shown Romary-colored hair for the third generation pilot, so it seems pretty safe to assume she'll be the chosen one this time. Hopefully Arisa and Asemu don't start getting all lovey dovey, because that'll be very bad for Arisa if so.

Bwahaha, Desil finding out that Zeheart became commander while he was asleep after going on about how he was such a valuable X-Rounder warrior was hilarious. The Desil/Zeheart friction has the potential to add something interesting to the Vegan side of the conflict.... which of course, the show will completely waste.
And now Zeheart becomes this show's Char clone, complete with a red mobile suit. And the show still can't figure out if it wants to be a real robot or super robot show.
Oh, and Arisa has to be rescued and otherwise doesn't do anything notable. But surely she'll become a competent, kick ass mobile suit pilot one of these episodes, right? .... Yeah, I'm not holding my breath either.

-Fuck the chest of the Gundam. You guys need that giant egg in the White Base that can make ANYTHING in thirty minutes or it's free. I bet it even makes crazy bread.
-And there they point out a logic hole. The Feddies can't make another AGE system. WHY? Why not just make the AGE system make ANOTHER ONE! It can make any other kind of technobable product in no time.
-Don't you morons know that you never take a path through an asteroid field to hide from enemies? The enemies always plan a step ahead and get there first. Has this strategy ever worked in any sci-fi show? No.
-Huh. They must have an on board bakery. I wonder what space bread tastes like.
-"You are a Newtype. Here is your Newtype robot. It is red. You must now don the ceremonial Char mask. So it is written. So it is done. Ahem."

-Your mission was-- But you had-- Why leave-- WHAT THE FUCK! You could have capture him you collosal idiot.
Just when you think this show is making a turn for the better, it goes and does something dumber than ever. Zeheart's missions was easily accomplished. He won. He had the Gundam and Asemu caught in his trap. Why the hell didn't he disable the suit and capture the Gundam AND Asemu. I MAKES NO SENSE. There wasn't even the usual token "oh shit the cavalry arrived and I must depart with out my prize" trope. Zeheart just fucking fails his mission on all accounts.
Arisa is a genderswapped Kai Shiden. Same pissy attitude trying to make the Gundam pilot not be a mopey moron. I love her. If you do not marry her and have a badass child I will murder you Asemu. Fuck Romary. Or rather don't. She's boring and can't be trusted to walk by herself.

"We gave you 15 episodes of a girl being useful for nothing except nagging, pining over the hero so she can be his rebound and pump out his babies, and convincing the crew they totally needed to believe in the captain that stole the ship. And then we totally pulled some heartstrings when we killed off that other girl. Wasn't that awesome? Wait, you wanted something else? What else would you do with girl characters? You wanted a girl that actually showed some personality and a will of her own? Why on earth would you want that?"
-You fucking asshole writer. You couldn't let Arisa hold her own in combat. Fucking mysogynist moron!
The show really is just flat out, ragingly sexist at this point. Emily literally served almost no purpose except to nag and bear Flit's children. Yurin was a refrigerator girlfriend. There were no other female characters worth mentioning. Now the show is going out of its way to show Arisa need those big strong men to keep her alive. God forbid she might be a remotely competent pilot. Millais is a ship captain, but Woolf has now had to undermine her authority or otherwise show her to be in the wrong in both episodes. Oh geeze, I seriously almost forgot to even mention Romary. I think that says enough about her right there. Well, not quite.... in the first episode of gen 2, she apparently didn't know what a fucking mobile suit was.
It's unbelievable how ass backwards this show is in female representation and its far too consistent to just be blamed on the overall atrocious writing. How the fuck did we go from SEED Destiny and Gundam 00 to this? This makes Zeta Gundam look progressive in comparison. How fucking sad is that?

It's that time again. Time to see how horrible Gundam AGE can be to women this week!
-Hi Arisa. Nice to know the writers haven't forgotten you exist as a human being. Yet.
-Flit might make a good military man, but he's a bad father.
-Remi Ruth? Another female cast member to be marginalized. Cute though.
-A budding romance over robot maintenance with musical accomaniment. Remi your or whatsis name are going to die very soon. ;_;
-Romary is jealous that ZaHeart almost killed Asemu... You are stupid girl.
-HAH! Yeah Asemu that's my expression too.
-Asemu fails his Newtype test. You poor frail oldtype.
-Mrs. Madorna still looks good for a 40~50 year old.
-Rhody? What are you doing here without your Warmachine armor?
-So Asemu's "I'm not as good as my dad." pouting session is getting solved in less than an episode. Then why even bother bringing it up guys?
-Asemu vs virtual ZaHeart & fake Flit turns out to be a very good fight.
-Meanwhile ZaChart talks Elzawhosits about the Big Ring attack.
-Looks like Flit will break out the old Gundam for combat next time.
Advanced training blah blah whatever. Still this was the best episode in... well maybe the best episode of the whole series. In any other Gundam show it would just be an average break between battles episode but here the standards are so low. On the down side Romary is fruitcake.

"This operation MUST succeed! That's why we decided the best person to lead it would be someone who was promoted to commander with zero leadership experience and has commanded exactly one combat operation since his promotion and didn't even succeed in that."
And I love how some kid Asemu's never met before suddenly decides to be best buddies with him and babbles on and on and just so happens to have similar daddy-comparison issues and thus gives Asemu a speech cutom designed to get him out of his "I'll never measure up to my dad" funk about three minutes after it starts. Oh, and he built an uber training machine for him.
We meet another cute girl this week, a mechanic named Remi. She seems pretty fun, but its pretty clear the only reason she exists is either to A) get killed off so the red haired guy gets sad and angry about her death or B) to try to get use to care when red hair guy gets killed.
Romary thinks fighting is bad and wants to have someone's babies. In other words, she's Emily, just with less personality.
Arisa didn't have to be rescued for the first episode since she appeared, but that's only because she barely did jack shit and didn't even step inside a mobile suit in the episode.

-"Awesome's heart" to you too Romary.
-The Vegans think Newtypes are less than human. But their entire war hinges on having as many of them as possible.
-Arisa killed a Vegan on her own! Oh crap the writer is going to kill her isn't he?
-The black magic Purus aren't enough to stop Flit's competent chess strategy. Looks like Zachart & Devil have to come out to play.
-You really had to mention the three times speed thing again? We get it. He is the Char in the red custom mobile suit.
-"Red & black robots are so dated!" Damn right Woolf.
-Flit's mustache makes him five times as fast. Bright never had to lower himself to piloting a Gundam to win a fight.

-Flit's leading from the front seems like a bad strategy. Why risk one of the federations highest ranking officers on a hunch. And why have the only two Gundams ever made in the same place. MAKE MORE GUNDAMS!
-Meganeko mechanic is still doing fine. How long can this last?
-Remi Ruth. The Diva is her house. The crew her family. The future is filled with your suffering.

-Wait... why the fuck is Asemu outside the ship and walking around inside the colony? Who let him out of the ship. Who let him past the space port securi--- oh right they don't have security on any colony anywhere.
-Did Masami Oobari take over animation of the mecha combat? This is the best looking fight this show has ever had.
Romary's lines of dialog: 13
Romary's lines that were just saying "Asemu": 5
This whole episode was predicated on the assumption that a colony was working with the Vegans to supply mecha parts. But the Vegans have been sneaking into colonies for over two decades with no trouble what so ever. Who's to say they didn't just walk into Solon and buy some robot parts. This seems like flimsy evidence to investigate on. Hell we know the Vegans had a mobile suit upgraded at the old mechanic guy's repair shop and they never hassled him about it.
Another stupid episode. The robot combat was pretty though.

Yay for more Remi being cute.
Then Romary gets to do what she was put in the show for: cheer Flit up and be protected by him.
I don't have the energy to go into how stupid everything that happened with the Solon plant was. But I will say that I'm highly disappointed at the severe lack of physical violence used on Asemu in this episode. He was a moron and he really doesn't seem to understand how this whole "military" with hierarchies and following orders. He is not nearly good enough of a pilot to justify allowing him to continue being the pilot of the Gundam after the shit he pulled in this episode. Why didn't you just bring the data and give it to Flit *this* time? You're a fucking idiot, Grodek.
<3 Arisa. A real shame she's stuck in such a shitty Gundam series.
I couldn't tell if Asemu's little lakeside conversation with Zeheart was supposed to be real or just in Asemu's imagination. It didn't fully convince me it was actually happening until it flashed back to Zeheart talking to his spy buddy about going to meet him.
"Zeheart, I want to have your babies!" You decide whether this line would be more appropriate for Romary or Asemu.
Romary. He's your enemy. But she's a girl, so ovaries > logic + loyalty + sanity + anything remotely resembling military discipline, in this show's POV.
Why are the Vagan's bothering with convential, full frontal warfare again? They've repeatedly shown that they have no problem getting their mobile suits into colonies. That's clearly their strong point, rather than fighting enemies actually capable of damaging their super Martian armor, so why aren't they taking advantage of it? Oh, right, everyone in this show is a complete moron.
It took a surprisingly long time for the AGE-2 to get a new toy add-on to sell.
Okay, so this new toy is actually pretty awesome, unlike the AGE-1's. And it lets Asemu take down two of the enemy X-Rounders.
"Asemu" Yes Romary, we know that you can say Asemu's name. This is only the 20th time you've said (and the 18th time in which it was the only word you said in the scene) in the last three episodes.
And someone stabbed Grodek. Someone killing him or making an attempt on his life was all but guaranteed, but who did it was a surprise. I was wondering when that guy would show up again and wasn't expecting him to look and act like a second rate thug.
Ha, and then the little bitch gets shot (and killed? He was dying but not quite dead in the scene). That was a sudden and unexpected way to wrap up that little plot thread.
Speaking of other lingering threads waiting to be picked up again... anyone else remember that locket thing Woolf picked up off the dead or dying Vagan near the end of the last episode of Gen 1?

How does Flit recognize Vegan technology that they've only just gotten ahold of?
Hmmm, it brings out X-Rounder abilities but will cause serious brain damage in the user eventually. There's nooooo chance the Earth forces will adopt this dangerous X-Rounder boosting technology and use it on their own forces at some point, right? Surely they're above such things. Yes, I'm sure they are.
Or I guess Asemu could take it for himself.
LOLwhut. He skips the dating part and jumps straight to asking Ruth to marry him. Her reaction is.... rather natural actually. She gets really embarrassed and gets the fuck out of there.
The Earth's defense will completely fall apart if one facility gets destroyed? Wow, that is some astounding incompetence. The Earth Federation deserves to be steamrolled if that's true.
And they just leave the super dangerous helmet on a table, in an unlocked room. Brilliant. And then Dique walks off, leaving it "locked" in a case that has glass weak enough that Asemu can break it with apparently zero effort.
Two of the Magician's 8 get killed, including the only one I gave the tiniest damn about and in the first episode she did anything. Somewhat surprisingly, Olbright survived the battle. Well, I guess that kind of thing may be less of a death flag in a multigenerational story. They'll need another side character or two to pop out some babies to be in the last generation.
Looks like Asemu has allowed Woolf to talk some sense into him. He really should have been decked by Flit or Woolf by this point and if he really is coming to his senses, I guess that's not going to happen. ;_;

Also, Olbright can't die until he knocks up Ruth.

How the hell did marriage proposal guy survive this episode? I don't don't think anything in this show makes sense anymore. It can't even use the most basic of action show cliches right anymore. Yes and no. In most shows when they first show up The Char already has a mask. So he doesn't really need a reason. He's just The Masked Man. Some of them do get backstory for the mask. In those cases it's hiding an identity that people might know (Casval Deikun) or because of facial scars (Urube Ishikawa) or both (Mister Bushido). But yes Zeheart's reason for the mask is more practical than any other Char I can think of.

So Flit chooses the Romary ending.
Of course he's going to choose the one who spent the whole generation running around pretty screaming for someone to pollute her womb, seemingly not terribly concerned whether it was Asemu or Zeheart. And then when the show looks like its giving her the tiniest bit of character development, like maybe having life goals beyond having Asemu or Zeheart's babies, Asemu tells her she doesn't need to do something silly like that.
The scene with Flit confronting the Earth Prime Minister guy was only slightly less stupid than the attempt to arrest Zeheart at the graduation ceremony. Flit doesn't say anything that's the least bit convincing to someone who isn't predisposed to believe him, its heavily circumstantial, and he doesn't provide ANY actual evidence. There was absolutely no reason for the Prime Minister to acknowledge anything Flit said as being true. That he did is utterly unbelievable.
How did Grodek get this information to Flit, anyway?
A colony called "Angel" fell? When? I thought the only thing that fell to earth was the Vagan ship.
At least the new Vagan mobile suit was kind of cool.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess at this point I should just be grateful they didn't kill off Arisa or Unoa. They merely amounted to absolutely nothing.
Christ, lets look at the show's female cast after two generations, shall we? What exactly have they amounted to?
Yurin: helps Flit escape from the colony, gets forgotten for 10 episodes and then becomes a human mobile suit battery and refrigerator girlfriend. Flit goes out of his way to NOT kill the person who did it to her.
Emily: nags, war is bad m'kay?, gives a little speech about trusting Grodek, has Flit's babies between generations without us ever seeing the tiniest bit of romantic interaction between them
Millais: bridge bunny in gen 1 that doesn't do anything of note, becomes captain of a ship in theory, spends most of the generation ferrying Flit around, never actually in control of her own ship during major battles
Arisa: THREE FUCKING TIMES! And never does much of note after that, just one of the trio. I can't remember anything she did in battle. Had a pretty awesome personality, but that's exactly why the show screwed her over. I'm amazed she survived.
Romary: "These ovaries of mine are filled with an awesome power! Their burning ovulation tells me to have your babies! Take this! My love, my lust, and all of my dreams! SHINING UTERUS!!" Christ, what a waste of Hanazawa Kana.
Remi: Gushed about Gundams, was the only female in the show to do something noteworthy by fixing the ship, then gets killed immediately afterwards.
Unoa: Did absolutely nothing. Was fun in the 30 seconds of screentime she had.
Mink: By far the least offensive character in the show. Actually competent at combat, managing to not only appear in multiple battles over multiple episodes, but she's the *last* one to die. And WTF, she was voiced by Mamiko Noto!? HOW DID I NOT NOTICE THAT!?!?!
But yeah, the show's track record with the female characters is absolutely fucking absymal.

Arisa: THREE FUCKING TIMES! And never does much of note after that, just one of the trio. I can't remember anything she did in battle. Had a pretty awesome personality, but that's exactly why the show screwed her over. I'm amazed she survived.
There really was no reason for her to even exist. The writers didn't do anything with her. She was energetic and got saved by Asemu a few times. The rest of the trio served the same purpose as cannon fodder Asemu must protect because they don't have Gundams. As much as I like Arisa we would have been better of if she wasn't in the show taunting us with a girl who could have been awesome. But to the writers was just another walking womb.
Romary: "These ovaries of mine are filled with an awesome power! Their burning ovulation tells me to have your babies! Take this! My love, my lust, and all of my dreams! SHINING UTERUS!!" Christ, what a waste of Hanazawa Kana.
AHAHAHAHAHHA! That just made my day. Which after watching this episode and my MP3 player dying I really needed.

10 year olds piloting Gundams and legally driving cars? Seriously?
I'm not even sure how old they were supposed to be.
Well, we saw him get born and I'm pretty sure it said it was another 10 years after that. Sometimes it seemed like he had to be older than that, but then other times (particularly in the scenes with Flit near the end) he did look and act younger than Flit and Asemu in their generations.
I'm just assuming the others are the same age as him, but I guess he could hang out with kids older than him for some reason. Either way, while Kio flipped back and forth, I really can't buy Wendy as a 10 year old. She looks and acts distinctly older than a 10 year old should, and older than Gen 1 Emily in particular.
Edit: Okay, I'm seeing him referred to as being 13 elsewhere, so I guess I misread it. And yes, I know it said "10 years later" for leading up to when he was born, but I thought it said it again after that.
Anyway, that was...not terrible. But it has plenty of time to live down to expectations.
Please let Asemu be dead. Please~~~Even assuming they all actually are 10, it was still significantly less stupid than the average Asemu episode (especially the High School ones). But then, I the first episode of that generation left me optimistic as well.

Please let Asemu be dead. Please~~~Even assuming they all actually are 10, it was still significantly less stupid than the average Asemu episode (especially the High School ones). But then, I the first episode of that generation left me optimistic as well.
And there's no way Asemu is actually dead.
I do, however, very much want Flit to die. Preferably via heart attack or stroke rather than a blaze of glory.
I also really really really wants Asemu dead but know they aren't going to have him dead. This show always drags out any character death so long he can't be gone. But it would be nice if he does die later saving his son some how. Give him one redeeming quality.
I'm still hoping Flit is the real Final Boss. Crazy old man wants to commit genocide on the Vegans and has turned his grandson into a component for his super weapon. He needs to die painfully.

-Preamble before OP is trying to make this war seem epic. All it's making me think about is how this shit could go one for 70 years. Didn't the Vegan's start out with virtually no resources and mostly dying out on Mars?
-If that skull faced mecha with the Crossbones banner behind it turns out to be piloted by Asemu Asano I will be so fucking pissed.
-Gundam Fighter READY... start or whatever.
-Zaheart's suit reminds me of Weltall-Id.
-Deivido-san! Vegan's kind of suck at delivering killing blows to enemy pilots though.
-25 years of aging = MUSTACHE.
-The guy next to Algreus has a magically appearing & disappearing mustache.
-Attack of the Low Animation Quality Children!
-Natora Anus. ANUS. Seriously guys? None of you consulted anyone who speaks english or the internet? Urine, Assemu & TheHeart were bad enough but this is fucking stupid. Hello Captain Anus.
-Is this your attempt to get away from the misogyny AGE? By making a teenage girl named Anus the captain of the main series space ship.
-Commanding officer guy has a point. Flit is just going to countermand any order she makes anyway. Flit will have his way with Anus.
-Uh you do know that Kio is out there getting his ass kicked right now don't you. We don't have time to spend on comic relief in the middle of a fucking warzone.
-Can Diva turn into a giant robot now? I'm tired of waiting. And are we ever going to see the AGE system built into it's guts ever used again?
-I think Captain Anus just had a brown trowsers moment. Too bad she's only wearing a skirt.
-Captain Anus is the key to victory!
-Obright is still alive. Stop reminding me.
-Oh hi AGE system. Where were you for most of Asemu's run?
-Uh Flit you know proper strategy could get you out of this not some new toy to shill right?
-"Fuck you Flit. You're retired. The Gundam is under my command." I like this Seric Abis guy. He dislikes Flit a tenth as much as I do.
-"Shut up grandpa I know what I'm doing."
-"Hi! I'm Anus." "I'm a racist dick."
-Poor Kio. You are an innocent tool for a genocidal madman.
OMG Captain Anus is comedy gold. But for all the wrong reasons. Wendy is nothing but a baby sitter. Sure there is a female mech pilot, but she doesn't have a name or personality yet. Ladies aren't doing any better this time around.

Good god this fucking show.
I'm just going to post an AIM log. Because I'm not typing any more about this fucking episode.
fencedude: *starts AGE 30*
fencedude: You know, if this were the beginning of a show, not 2/3 of the way in, I'd be pretty damn positive about it
strangefour: Bring the pain.
strangefour: yeah
fencedude: But no, its AGE, so its gonna suck
strangefour: if we did not know now what we have already learned
strangefour: Flit and a brand new character will make the "magic" happen
strangefour: Oh god this new character.
fencedude: AGE-3 is a pretty good design though
strangefour: Because it's Double Zeta!
fencedude: Though it really needs the ZZ's stupidly oversized beam sabers
fencedude: Man, they are really making this whole thing with the Diva's crew highly contrived
fencedude: Also quit whining Natora. Bright was a goddamn Ensign
strangefour: yeah convoluted shit that should have happened before this episode. You do not just find and fill a batteship with people in the middle of a god damn full on war in town
strangefour: Natora ANUS
fencedude: In theory, Natora's character arc coudl be really good and moving and all that shit.
fencedude: In reality, this is Gundam AGE and she's a female character
fencedude: So it will be shit.
fencedude: Jesus christ
strangefour: heheh
fencedude: Flit's entire plan is "lets use the magic plot device machine"!
fencedude: FUcking hell
strangefour: Yeah.
strangefour: The racist is a horrible strategist.
fencedude: This would be embarrassing in a straight up, no-logic-required Super Robot show from the 70s
strangefour: I swear that's was the last time the lead writer had a job.
fencedude: You know, I miss Gundam Seed and its strong, well written female characters'
fencedude: AND I'M NOT EVEN FUCKING JOKING

Natora is kind of cute. And now she's captain of the Dive. In most shows, this would be a good sign. But I have to keep reminding myself that this is Gundam AGE. The natural story progression for Natora is to become a good captain and make the douchey commander that promoted her eat his hat. But this is Gundam AGE, so the show is going to do everything possible to minimize anything positive that could possibly come from it and maximize the shit.
Meanwhile, Wendy has already been reduced to babysitter. Oh, Natora would have preferred to join her rather than do anything related to her military duties.
The bridge crew is... interesting. Certainly unique for a Gundam show, unless I'm forgetting something.
Man, the Vagans must be the biggest douchebags in all of Gundam. Sure, they haven't dropped any colonies yet or gassed them (yet), but I don't think any other group made a point of butchering civilians the way the Vagans do. The rest at least committed their atrocities as a means to an end. The Vagans just butcher civilians for the sake of doing it because they're bitter about what the government secretly did over a hundred years ago, and often seem to place a higher priority on civilian slaughter than taking out military targets.
So you're trump card is a 70 year old ship? Uh huh. At least some people in the show pointed out how ridiculous that is but its still stupid. And apparently they've just left their still-working magical weapon manufacturing device sitting in it as well. Good god, everyone in the Federation is an absolute fucking moron.
I thought Natora must be related to someone from one of the previous generations, but I can't find anyone with "Einus" in their name.
Also, nice job ANN. Anyone that starts watching this in the future and has the gall to look at the cast list will see who Flit and Asemu end up with, because they felt a need to include their married names. So now Emily and Romary's entries include "/_____ Asuno" for the character name. ANN is not a fucking wiki. It does not need and should not include name information that is not presented almost immediately unless its just unavoidable (i.e. "multiple" characters being voiced by the same person).

But did they do it just for the sake of doing it or because there was actually some larger strategic point to it (i.e. colony drops; massive civilian casualties but generally used for militarily strategic reasons)? I never saw ZZ and its been a while since I saw Zeta or the movie trilogy, but I don't remember killing civilians being one of their main objectives for no other reason other than spite.

It's that time again folks. Welcome back to GunDAMN IT!
-Captain Anus is still stuck in the tutorial for the Diva.
-"Sit your ass down woman. I'm in charge here." I hate you Flit.
-Flit please use your inside voice. You're scaring Anus.
-After a whole generation has passed Kio's aunt Unoa finally gets to do something! AGE what are you up to? You're going to kill her off aren't you.
-Run Haro run! They will eat you alive!
-Wendy has been demoted to babysitter.
-There is an over abundance of women on this ship. There will not be enough things women are allowed to do to go around.
-Oh hi Black Tri-Stars knock off of this series.
-Dick's grandson is kind of a dick for no good reason.
-Oh Shanalua no. No. Don't be the next Matilda.
-Woodbit Gunhale. Fuck yeah Arisa! Stick it yo the man. You didn't need to get married to be an important character. Sorry about the getting knocked up with an asshole of a son though.
-Gundam Program Drive release! SE-RA-VEE!
-MASH!! Gaia & Ortega will never forget you. Which is good since the rest of us don't care.
-Shanalua is the rare intelligent person in this show or a Vegan.
-Preview: Well that was quick.
Less to bitch about this time because it was mostly fighting. Kind of silly sand shark fighting but that was okay. Woodbit is an annoying little shit though.

Unoa! I've missed you. .... Crap, they're going to kill her off.
I spent about half the episode trying to figure out who Shanalua was. It wasn't until they took off that I remembered that they very briefly showed a female pilot (only fully suited up, I think) in the first episode of this generation.
And they were telegraphing pretty hard with her. I will be absolutely shocked if she's not a spy. It's just a question of whether she's Vagan herself (most likely) or if they're using her younger sister to get her to act for them. [Edit: And I didn't even watch the preview, which apparently makes it clear that next episode will be about there being a spy on the ship. Which will almost definitely be her. In most shows, I would think that this is being too obvious and that they're misdirecting us. But this is Gundam Age.]
Also, I guess Wootbit is Arisa's kid? She has horrible sense of names.
-Woodbit Gunhale. Fuck yeah Arisa! Stick it yo the man. You didn't need to get married to be an important character. Sorry about the getting knocked up with an asshole of a son though.
I find it hard to see this as anything positive for her, since it still means her main contribution to the show is popping out a kid, who has already amounted to more in this generation than she did. He delivered the new Gundam parts to the Gundam pilot. She just fed him in jail and got saved three times in one fucking episode and I honestly cannot remember a single goddamn thing she did in battle other than that, which means she basically did jack shit.

-Our trip will takes us from Oliver, Alaska down to Rostrolan, Chicago. Be sure to watch out for the high tide. Wait... Canada is a hot barren desert?
-Oh right I forgot to note last episode, SHANALUA USED A CELL PHONE! Meaning A) She gets a good signal that far up in Canada? B) Even if she wasn't sexting with a Vegan they could trace her call. C) The writer of this show has discovered modern technology.
-Maria, no. How could you betray George de Sand!?
-Is horribly over designed Bad Guy's beard really a beard of part of his ridiculously evil helmet?
-The children appear to have been tamed early. The fat one's character is "hungry." *groan*
-Woodbit does from total dick to best friend in one episode. The writers don't know what a character arc is do they?
-Flit is lecturing Captain Anus as one would scold a child who just wet the bed. At least that's what the expression on her face looks like.
-Oh my god. *yawn* Shanalua is a spy. This is a huge shock to me. *sigh* How can this be true? *shrug*
-Jaburo has been discovered. It's a full on war here. Don't the Vegans know how to do a surprise attack? Oh wait they do. That's what they did for 70 years inside colonies. I guess Earth's atmosphere and full gravity makes them forget.
-AHAHAHAHAH! The music that plays when ZeHeart is getting in the cockpit, which is probably his own personal theme now, sounds like it's chanting, "Shut up, shut up, aaaaaaahhhhh." Hehehehe.
-The Feddie's Guncannon looks neat.
-ZeHeart, stop trying to be Char. It just makes you look that much more pitiful.
-My little sister can't be this sick.
-Well Shanalua wasn't dumb enough to jump in between an enemy attack & the Gundam. She's still dead but she could have been stupider. All because Kio was to lazy to help.
Thrill! As the Gundam just stands there and Kio accomplishes nothing. Chill! As the obvious spy gets killed in the second episode where she has a character. Flashback! As knockoff Char and his faux Z`Goks prepare to nuke not-Jaburo.

-Yes ZeHeart. Follow Lord Ridiculous Hair's plans to the letter. Those plans are never illogical and only designed to use you as an expendable decoy.
-Captain Anus is starting to realize just how incredibly useless she is. It's sad to see a character forced into an existential crisis due to poor writing.
-"Nobody starts out acting like a captain." Grodek, Bright Noa, & a half dozen other captains are now spinning in their graves.
-"I'm helping!" Keep telling yourself that Captain Anus. Keep telling yourself.
-Guys stop over doing it with the stock footage fighting. The robot combat was your one shining quality. Take that away and I will be left with nothing but hate.
-IT'S A TRAP! Well duh.
-Why... why is your codpiece so big ZeHeart?
-Kio is a magical Newtype and stuff.
-Exploding coconut (tfwiki.net/wiki/Matrix_of_Leadership) light our darkest hour!
-Wait what? For 50 fucking years no one has been interested in the magic McGuffin that helped them win the first big fight against the Vegans. There is suspension of disbelieve and then there is fucking stupidity of a cosmic magnitude. At the very least Flit should have built a second AGE system egg by now on his own, if not a dozen of them. Every capital ship in the fleet should have one.
-Oh hi twintail loli. You're some kind of clone aren't you Fram Nara?
Jaburo has been saved but the Vegans control 40% of the earth's surface. Is that total surface or just land masses? Maybe all they have is the Pacific ocean and Antarctica.
Next week: Space pirates with in giant robots with giant handcufss! Also I fear I will be yelling. A lot. More than usual. So so much more.

That wasn't too bad of an episode other than the lingering Shanalua bullshit, which itself would not be a big issue if not for the show's established pattern of misogyny. It's even actually developing Natarla though I see no reason to be optimistic about how things will ultimately play out.
And they're at least addressing some of the show's other glaring issues with the AGE system and Elcazant expecting Zeheart to fail his various missions. The ultimate explanations for them will probably still be stupid, but that there was some intent to address the issues at least somewhat mitigates them.
I like Fram. Maybe she'll get lucky and the show won't handle her completely horribly since she's a Vagan character.
Goddammit, Gundam AGE, don't give me reasons to hate you less. Don't give me characters to actually like or show signs of intelligent life among your writers. Though ironically, that might just make me hate the show even more in the end.

-Woodbit even annoys the three token annoying children. That is a sadly impressive accomplishment.
-In the depths of space a blond guy with bad hair is wait. Son of a bitch. :beat:
-ZeHeart is bored. Purple twintail loli uis a suck up and related to someone dead. Desil? That little prick who died in an alley after waiting 25 years to kill Grodeck? *shrug*
-Why does Wendy have a sorta bowling pin shaped pony tail?
-The Sargasso of space. I don't think you guys know how orbital debris works. Wouldn't material in a Lagrange point tend to collect together, if each chunk doesn't develop an orbit of it's own?
-A Black Diva with a giant sword prow. Captained by a mysteri-- it's fucking Asemu. The least likeable character from the last generation is back as a "bad ass space pirate." A gimmick stolen from my favorite piece of Gundam fiction, the Crossbone Gundam (http://gundam.wikia.com/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Crossbone_Gundam) manga. Asemu Asuno, you are no Seabook Arno. :beat:
-Oh now you prepare for combat? A real space pirate would have hacked your systems, boarded you and kicked your ass in a sword fight by now. Moooooooourets!
-He calls himself Captain Ass. Err Ash. Ass is fighting Anal. *groan*
-Captain Hook Gundam looks pretty coo-- Damn it! They stole the lance weapon used by the Crossbones Vanguard (http://gundam.wikia.com/wiki/XM-04_Berga_Dalas) in F91.
-You can keep trying, but there is no way you can make Asemu cool.
-How dumb are you Flit that you can't recognize a Gundam just because it's painted black. Asemu figured out that Kio's in the AGE-3 and he's a moron.
-Flit is senile and needs his Newtype powers to think for him. *sigh*
-Gaia & Ortega are back to avenge Mash (no I don't know their real names, don't give a shit). Black Tri-Star revenge!
-ORTEGA!!!
-The battle over, the remaining Vegans and BDSM pirate leave.
-The pilot of the Dark Gundam is your father. Search your feelings you blah blah.
Asemu is the captain of space pirates flying a crossbones banner and piloting a black Gundam with more skull motif on it. God damn it this just pisses me off that the Crossbone manga has never been animated. We could have a great show about space pirate Gundams. But no we get a "super pilot" idiot who thinks he's so cool annoying the first (by comparison) good main character in this show. At least they didn't try to drag out who Captain Ash was beyond this episode considering it was obvious from the first time we saw new OP.
Actually it is far more annoying that if this show had started with Kio, this would seem like a good Gundam show. We wouldn't know Flit was a racist, Asemu was a jerk, ZeHeart is useless as a leader, or girls can't do anything but have babies & die. Well I guess we'd still have Captain Anal and she's very embarrassing. *sigh*

"Now that you're working for me, you'd better prove yourself useful." And you been useful for what, exactly, Zeheart? Which mission did you NOT fail? Because I can't remember any.
Oh, hi there, Asemu. Your Pirate mobile suit looks completely ridiculous.
Well, for all of Gundam AGE's terribleness and lack of creative brain activity, it at least didn't use one of the standard two or three scenarios for Asemu's fate and went a semi-interesting and less trodden path. But since this is still Gundam AGE, they still aren't going to ultimately do anything interesting with it. In fact, they wasted no time in teasing an interesting direction and immediately killing it off. Rather than continuing with his original plan of taking the AGE System for himself, he's decided to "entrust it to them" after testing their strength.
God damn it this just pisses me off that the Crossbone manga has never been animated.
Well, apparently AGE just stole the space pirate thing from another part of the franchise, so its as creatively braindead as ever. But at least its something that's only been done about once rather than something that's been done dozens if not hundreds of times.
I haven't read Crossbone Gundam and can't bring myself to give a shit about it since its based on what was the worst part of the Gundam franchise I'd seen before Gundam AGE came along.

-New toy ready for production! Available everywhere on store shelves now! (Availablility subject to change.)
-Ex-Debbie? Err EXA-DB. So the Feddies kept the blue prints for a crap ton of banned weapons from wars like a century ago. Um I think people can have worked out how to build nukes and weapons far worse in that time.
_Can you keep that a secret twintail loli? Good. I hope so. Because why were you even at this briefing? Just to make it look like the Vegan's hire women.
-Zeheart & the one eyed fat bearded bastard spring a pincer attack on the Diva.
-Even fat bastard's mecha is exceedingly fat.
-ZeHeart has fin funnels... kinda. They are just a bunch of glowing spheres that zip around.
-Hmm, AGE 3's new red parts make it three times faster. And it can fire homing laser boomerangs.

-Damn it Kio! Do not turn that Gundam around. You grandpa just did the best thing he has done in 50 years to try to save your ass (and kill more Vegans while he's at it). Let the old man die peacefully. In combat. To the death.
-Fat bastard's mecha-koala-turtle gives the best hugs.
-HAH! Tail slapping Zeheart into Flit is a great movie. You're okay fat bastard.
-Wait. Is this the first time ZeHeart has actually achieved a military goal Lord Crazyhair set out for him? After a dozen or so horribly failed combat missions ZeHeart does something right for a chance. Huh.
-Captain Anus what will you do? Will you listen to the angry old man telling you to turn around or will you do what's best for your crew? To find the right answer you need to ask yourself: What would Bright Noa do?
-Captain ANus has found her answer: complete and total inaction. *facepalm* You have brought shame to the title of Captain. Again.
-Oh don't scream about it Flit. I'm sure they'll treat Kio fine. He'll be having wine & cheese with some Vegan royalty right now I'm sure. That's what happens to all Gundam pilots when they get captured.
-The Madorna workshop, again? *sigh* They just stalk the Diva in their little space garage don't they.
-Don't look so sad Anus. I'm sure some day you will be needed. One day the bridge crew won't just run the whole ship without you. . . Nah I'm kidding. You'll be useless until you have a baby. *sigh*
-"Screw you guys, I'll fix it myself." Nothing is ever good enough for grandpa.
-Damn it. Will someone shove the comic relief children out an airlock please.
-Wendy's defining character traits are: blind faith & babysitting skills. *sigh*
-Twintail loli is desperately loyal to ZeHeart and looking for approval. Why him girl? He isn't even a charismatic lunatic like Paptimus Scirocco. Zeheart is just a barely competent middle manager.
-Asemu: "Hi dad, I heard what happened... I'll go save my son." Flit: "No! You are a dirty pirate! I have no son!" Awkward.
-Mrs. Lalaparly: "He's right you know. Your ship and robots are beat to crap Flit. You can't save Kio." Flit: "I'm not listening. This is man talk."
-Kio's accommodations are not what a Gundam pilot is accustomed to. The management is going to get a very terse note about this.
-ZAMDRAG!
Bad military strategy, lots of bickering, misogyny, and Zeheart being made a fool of. That's the Gundam AGE I remember. *sigh* Looks like Kio will visit Mars next week. ZOMG, Kio isn't dead! [/sarcasm]
Yeah, that was a really stupid cliffhanger. I'm also pretty sure they cheated and the Gundam actually did get stabbed through in the image in the previous episode, but I don't give nearly enough of a damn to go back and check.
As for the Natarla situation in this episode.... unlike everything else, Gundam Age is clearly aware of (most of) what it was doing here and it can largely justify it with her base personality and using these things as a start to actually doing something with her damn character arc. So I can't quite rip into it as much as I want to, at least until I see how her character arc plays out (the main reason I'm even bothering to still watch this sorry show), though there are still some problems. Like the fact that she has no obligation to obey Flit's orders and had to have a man make her argument for her even when she had a clear and more than justifiable reason for what she did. And the fact that all of those narrative justifications are a something of a fig leave given this show's long established patterns.
Nice to see Unoa actually do something, particularly since it involved telling off Flit. And its nice to see Laraparly again.
Meanwhile, Wendy shows up just to remind us that her role in this show is to be a babysitter. .... Why is she babysitting Asuna? Wait, the Vagans are from Mars....
I really hate to say this, but Gundam AGE is actually showing signs of improvement in regards to its female characters. The allowed the previous sexy Naratarly to show up as an aged, not very attractive woman, they're at least allowing Fram to be a competent, recurring character and is involved in her own subplot that isn't drenched in bullshit like Shanalua's, and the show looks like its actually going to work on developing Natarla into a competent commander, even if the way its going about it is less than ideal, to put it nicely. So yeah, it looks to be improving. I'm sure they'll fuck it all up and show they're misogyny in the end, but still. I have very mixed feelings about this.
Oh, and on a more general note, Zeheart actually completed a mission assigned to him. Other than the really stupid cliffhanger, this was actually a decent episode. Again, I have very mixed feelings about this.

Yeah part of me really wanted to like this episode. Laraparly Madorna being a tough as nails old lady who doesn't take shit from Flit. Natora Einus given an opportunity to strike out on her own and grow as a leader. ZeHeart being a competent enemy. However it manages to screw even those bits. Flit mostly ignores Laraparly. Natora ends up not making a choice. Zeheart getting tail whipped.
All that could be over looked if this was still in the first handful of episode of this show. Seven episode in I could over look Narota's naivete for being thrust into an overwhelming situation. Natora ends up not making a choice.
But even that can be the basis for character development. It pains me to do anything remotely resembling defending Gundam AGE and I particularly wanted to rail on the show for what it did with her.... but these kinds of things (being paralyzed by a situation and then that paralysis acting as a catalyst for growth) have been done before. And later scenes showed signs of the show doing just that.
IF (big IF) the show uses this as the starting point for her development into a competent captain.... then that narratively justifies what was done here, even if I really don't like how they went about it. Afterall, I watched Mouretsu Pirates right after this, a show that shows the right way to do it, and I watched Marika acting as a competent, kick ass captain without ever having to go through what Natarla just did.
All that could be over looked if this was still in the first handful of episode of this show. Seven episode in I could over look Narota's naivete for being thrust into an overwhelming situation. But we are waist deep into this morass of misogyny and racism.Yeah, my comment about it being a decent episode was looking at this episode in isolation. Even then, it was an improvement. But Gundam AGE is starting at Fucking Abomination, so it takes distressingly little to improve. Doing anything at all resembling character development with Natarla counts as improvement.

Lord Ezelpants that was an expertly staged one act play you gave Kio in the vegan slums. Even just the voice acting of Deen & Lu felt so much like a melodrama. I couldn't believe it even if that is what most Vegans are going through.

It's too bad this show is such shit, because there some decent things here conceptually. But this is Gundam AGE, so the execution is terrible, the larger story is shit anyway and Kio won't get anything resembling interesting character development from this experience, so who the fuck cares?

Oh gawd, because this whole Lu thing isn't incredibly ham-fisted and dumb enough already, they toss in a sad-sounding insert song as well. This is the most blatant and utterly horrible attempt at wringing tears from the audience I've ever seen in a Gundam show. "Hi, my name is Lu. Please cry when I die, 'kay? CRY DAMN YOU, CRYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!"
And apparently the Vegans completely forgot that they started a huge war, as they seem to have a grand total of about five mobile suits in their entire goddamn homeworld colony thing. None of which can be bothered to follow the Gundam when it decides to land in their city while the pilot abandons it for several minutes.

Yeah, "Cry damn you cry" does not count as characterization. She was a plot device and an audience manipulation.
I'm kind impressed they managed to spend virtually the entire episode trying to molest our tear ducts and never once managed to put anything resembling genuine emotion on screen. It was a completely transparent tear grab from beginning to end and even the characters seemed to know they were putting on a show and hamming it up to try to hit the audience in the gut. Most shows at least manage to get something resembling genuine emotion out of the characters at some point in their blatant tear grabs.
Granted, it probably helps that at least most of those put the tiniest bit of effort into characterization and endearing you to the characters in the first place. I'm sorry, what's Kio's character again? "Grandaddy's little Vegan killer"? That's not character any more than "cry damn you cry".
H20 ~Footprints in the Sands~ ending was more genuine and less transparently manipulative than this was and looks like a masterpiece in comparison. How fucking sad is that?

But yeah, ZZ is uneven in tone. It starts as largely a comedy. WHich is kind of what you need right after the downer ending of Zeta. But ZZ gets much better as it goes along. Now we finally get to hear Elzecant's big plan. It's.... to create a superior race that will never fight wars. Um, that sounds familiar. But this is Gundam AGE, so of course coming up with a plan for the main villain that hasn't already been used in another Gundam series would be too creative for them. And christ, I liked that at least the show had a "villain" that was genuinely fighting for his people. But no, he's pulling some Create a Master Race bullshit, and that includes using his own people as guinea pigs and throwing the ones that aren't "chosen" aside.
This at least explains some of the first generation's bullshit behavior. (http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showpost.php?p=1963892&postcount=15) And it actually irritates me that they're doing it. Goddammit AGE, stop fixing your shitty writing holes. -Lord Ezelpants: "For the sake of the pure race I must kill you!" uh... I just want to lock him & Flit in a room. That should solve this whole conflirt. In a double murder.
-Oh noes. The Gundam 3 has been damaged what ever shall we do. I know! Send out a different marketable toy.

New OP. how the fuck did Lu get in there? And Kio flying off, holding hands with Kio and Asemu's 'ghosts'.... LOL, and not in a good way. And it really pissed me off seeing all three generations of Gundam Pilots together. The female characters all get killed off or forgotten, along with the only two male characters worth a damn, while the most irritating characters keep hanging around.
I mean, fuck, if nothing else, killing off Flit would have been a good way to do Kio's character arc. Flit's parents were killed by Vegans and he was consumed with hatred for them for his entire life. Asemu was missing, so killing of Flit could have started Kio down the same path. THEN they could captured him and he would realize basically the same things and that he shouldn't just help perpetuate a cycle of vengeance and hate. But it just.... doesn't work well with the Kio we know. He's already this innocent waif of a kid that barely understands that he's killing people.
Of course, the show needs to be redone from the ground up. There's far too much to just patch up with small changes like that. At this point, they might as well just fuck everything up as much as possible. At least it gives me things to bitch about.
Oh, hi there Wendy. Nice to see that you've done jack shit except occasionally remind us that you've been babysitting for the entirety of this gen. Then we see Romary, Unoa and Wendy together, which really drives home how horribly misogynist this show has been if you put the tiniest bit of thought into what any of them have amounted to. Romary was the girlfriend/wife/mom, Unoa is a nurse, Wendy has literally been nothing but a babysitter. The only one that has done anything of the tiniest bit of significance is Unoa. Otherwise, they just do all the womanly duties that they're allowed to do in shows that don't give a shit about them like this.
.... Fuck, I just realized that I don't think they even actually talked to each other in that scene! *double checks* Nope. As far as the show was concerned, the only thing important enough to show was their lines to the men.
Ahahaha, I love how Flit looks like the total psychopath that he is in that scene. I actually like what Asemu was trying to do though. That's actually a decent idea... *sigh*
Then Romary and Unoa watch the ship take off.... and still don't fucking say anything to each other! Holy shit, its like this show is actively TRYING to fail the Bechdel Test as hard as possible while thumbing its noses at any tiny opportunity to pass it beyond "has more than one female character". (Actually, I think AGE technically passes, but ONLY because of Romary's conversations with the bridge bunnies... but I'm entirely sure on that, because I don't know for certain that they ever talked about something other than Romary's boy issues.)
"Can it only target certain parts of a unit"? Hmmm? Why does he...? Oh. Oh for fuck's sake, now the show is going to rip off THAT?
We've seen Natarla several times, including a meeting in which they were planning for a battle and it would have made sense for her to, say, ask about her ship's role or comment on things.... but she hasn't said a word yet. Oh yeah, and wasn't she supposed to have a character arc or something?
*sigh* Yep, Kio has become New AGE Jesus Yamato.
Okay, now they're getting back to the Narla stuff. I'll rant on it more later, but this is a fucking terrible way to do it. I don't think I need to worry about AGE disappointing me and suddenly handling her in a non-terrible way.
I didn't think it was possible for a Gundam to be more stupidly overpowered than the Strike Freedom Gundam, but I think the AGE-FX and its C-Funnels may manage to pull it off.
And, uh, since when did Vegan mobile suit design involve putting cockpits in the heads? That clearly wasn't the case when Flit stupidly didn't kill the guy that used Yurin as a human battery. And I'm pretty sure we've clearly seen Zeheart getting into a chest cockpit.
Oh, a new female Vegan character. Why does this not please me? Oh right, I'm watching Gundam AGE.

Yeah, you aren't missing anything. I'm mainly watching because I really want to know exactly how badly the show fucks everything up, particularly regarding the female characters. And I occasionally get a sort of sick pleasure from rage watching like this. Plus its Gundam, and I've watched too much to stop.
While its not exactly "fun" to "hate" the way some shows are, its at least not the painfully dull awfulness that some shows become, like Zero no Tsukaima F or Amagami SS+. ZnT:F had a few things to rage over in the middle (the stuff that got you to drop it) but by the end... it was just empty. The same awful writing but with utter creative brain-deadness and nothing to even really hate, it was just... there, a brain-cell killing abyss of boredom. If Gundam AGE became that, I really would drop it. I could not suffer through 10+ episodes of that.

Oh look. Natarla is relaying orders to underlings, playing taxi driver and secretary for Flit. In any other Gundam, she would be on a different ship than the person directing the battle and be in control of her own goddamn ship.
And at this point, I think the show has just completely forgotten that Flit shouldn't have any authority whatsoever in the military anymore. Not a single person has questioned his presence or authority since they picked him up at the beginning of this generation.
Who was Dole Frost again? .... Ah, okay. I figured he was part of that special X-Rounder group.
And at first I thought maybe the green haired lady was Zeheart's wife after I noticed her use "anata" to refer to him when it redid her line from the last episode. But after seeing them interact, I think its safe to say that's not the case.

This is the best episode of Gundam AGE by miles. Miss Spriggan and her back story are better than every other piece of writing this show has tried to peddle on us. In 15 minutes they gave us a character to care for, root for, empathize with and want to see her succeed and grow. Unfortunetally she's working for the "bad guys." Ya know what? Screw that. Girard Spriggan IS the "good guys." She is the kind of hero I want to see in my space robot sci-fi. Someone with flaws but potential to overcome what she is now.

Thank you Gundam AGE. I needed that flashback. I had completely forgotten that scene from five minutes earlier and Girard's entire motivation which was the whole point of that flashback. I never would have made the connection between "I... I am Girard Spriggan" and her backstory you just showed this episode if you didn't show me that scene of her crying over the guy's death again right when she said that line.
At least the show is doing something with Fram and Girard. They have an actual role in the story other than to have kids, babysit them, and/or die. I mean, at least one of them is still going to die, and their backstory and motivations leave something to be desired, but its vastly better than any of the other women in this show have fared.
Though it was pretty stupid that Fram was scared away by grunts nobody cares about and barely remembers in suits she should be able to thrash in about 5 seconds.
Also, Natarla's faces in this episode amused me. She looked constantly bored and/or annoyed.

-*snicker* We don't need your commentary ZeHeart. Girard is ten times the soldier you could ever dream of being.
-Oh you can stop him now Kio? You can stop your racist grandpa now to spare lame ass Zeheart? Fuck you too. Pussy.
-Science bastard is alive? SON OF A BITCH!
-Errr well not for long. Pretty magical wand smash!
-Wait... Second Moon is just a space colony filled with a shit ton of innocent impoverished residents. Why would you bring that to Earth. Lord Pretzlepants you are a moron.
Welp, shows over. Nothing to see here folks. Move along. The last gasp of goodness this show had has ended. It was good while it lasted. For one and three quarter episodes.
Girard Spriggan was the best thing to happen to Gundam in a decade. But now she is gone. Taken from us much too soon. She will be missed. She will never be forgotten. She will fly on through space forever in out hearts. The rest of this show will be tossed in the grave they made for her.
This really did feel like they'd fired the lead writer and started doing something good for once. Of course it looped back around to the sloppy death flaggy lady killing AGE we know and loath. We knew it was coming. But man it was a great ride for 40 minutes.

GIRARD SPRIGGAN! On the one hand, you're pretty awesome, on the other hand, its pretty sad that you are the best written female character in the entire damn series, and one of the only characters period who's actually entertaining.
Well, Flit's EXTERMINATE THE VAGANS schtick is getting pretty (https://twitter.com/Fencedude/status/233427041465286656) fucking (https://twitter.com/Fencedude/status/233430508577628161) hilarious (https://twitter.com/Fencedude/status/233430710285910016).

Christ, the show can't even bother to half-ass Natarla's sorry excuse for a character arc. There was a really, painfully, blatantly obvious thing to do with her and the "Nuke the entire base with the Plasma Driver" thing, but then the show makes a left turn and avoids even getting to the point of firing it. And when she's received orders to prepare to fire it at the base, she... doesn't care. She's just going along with it.
Granted, there's still 6-7 episodes left. And ultimately, it doesn't matter. Having her briefly show hesitation to follow orders (and that would be giving her too much credit; the simply had decision paralysis) and then having her disobey orders in order to not kill tons of people or save them ~15 episodes later is NOT a character arc.
Also, we wouldn't want one of the only skilled female pilots in the show to actually finish her only fight with her dignity intact, would we? Nope, didn't think so. Girard's X-Rounder powers go out of control and she basically goes insane. The show doesn't even let her finish her own goddamn fight.
Also.... what the hell was the point of Wendy even being in this show? Literally, her entire purpose in the nearly 15 episodes of this generation has been to be a fucking babysitter.

Not the only decent character. Arisa had potential. Grodeck & Mink could have done more. But then the writers showed up and killed or fucked them. :\
Half a bajillion of those ideas are just murdering Flit in different ways a second early each time aren't they?

Girard Spriggan broke out of the misogyny model. Until the lead writer showed up again and just had Flit murder her out of fucking no where. She was taking on three Gundams, ZeHeart and a hundred funnels ALL AT ONCE. But we are to expect that she doesn't see the oldest Newtype pilot there sneaking up on her just because she's talking to Kio. Bullshit. Zeheart was a human shield still in one piece. Or useless loli could have died in her place to show to Girard there is something more to life than revenge.
I guess this show does still make me mad. It's just a smaller more personal madness.

It's not exactly coherent, but she does toss out squee-ish "Zeheart-sama"s rather frequently. Fram's worse than Spriggan as far as female characterization goes, but Spriggan tossing those kinds of digs at her is another less than positive element of her character, though not one I had thought of when I was watching.

-Lord Ezelpants is going to trust Zeheart with his grand plan... Unless that means he plans for ZeHeart do do something that will get everyone killed, this is misplaced trust. ZeHeart is the most incompetent Vegan.
-ZeHeart knows the truth but refuses to accept it. Silly Char wanna be.
-Moon base reclaimed. Vegan mobile suit manufacturing. EXA-DB yadda-yadda. Guys why don't you just hire the Galaxy Angels to find all the Lost technology?
-The Intelligence Division was looking for the intelligence on the lost technology, but they lost intelligence they gathered... You are employing morons who lost their own marbles.
-SEIG ZE-- err ZAFTO TAMEN-- err EDEN IN OUR HANDS!
-Oh for fuck's sake Captain Anus! *facepalm* Plus a close up of your ass after you fall. And she was just carrying around print outs of Vegan digital files. They made her do pointless busy work. I fucking hate the head writer of this show so much.
-On this day ZeHeart's small shrivled balls grew three sizes.
-I'm going to guess that Ezelpant's long monologue is just a bad recap of a better speech from Turn A Gundam.
-HIKARU NI NAAAAAREEEEEEEE! :\ ZeHeart is kind of a dipshit.
-Time to wake up There Agains. Wait... Why are you waking up this douche? Shouldn't you have just cloned Girard Spriggan the Greatest Newtype of All Time?
-"We will attack the Grammys! And Fuhrer Flitler is in charge!" For fuck's sake.
-Heh. Nice to see that EVERYONE at the meeting is annoyed that Flit is in charge.
-Kill-Em-All Flit is the most racist character I can think of in anime. Man, if they do not murder him in a violent painful way... I can't think of anything. I already curse the ancestors of the writers.
-Kio stepping in to defend the Vegans would have more weight if he had a vegan girlfriend. Hell Asemu should have a Vegan girlfriend. It would explain why Flit hates him so much and give this show some emotional context.
-"They killed my family." "We are you family! Your war is taking us away from you!" See how hard that was? This could be a good show if you fucks knew how to write worth a damn.
-PHFAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA! What is Kabuki Quantum Fighter doing in command of the Vegan Grammy ship? And why hasn't he shaved today?
-A space monster guarding all that Lost technology in earth orbit?
-One of the writers remembered Wendy still exists. Then promptly forgets.
-The space monster is an abomination that thinks it is a Quebley.
With the last glimmer of hope for this show extinguished last episode, we are now trapped in the inevitable horror that is the stupifying climax of this show. Dumb things will happen. People will fight. A few will die. Flit fucking won't. They won't kill off the most racist son of a bitch ever animated because he's a Gundam pilot. Great, now Zeheart thinks he's fucking Jesus Christ, so we have two Jesus's in one horrible Gundam show. (Also, he just got promoted to Supreme Commander when he has a failure rate of about 99%)
And this episode really rubs in the horrible female cast situation. First it has Natarla performing secretarial tasks and even she's finally starting to bitch about it, then it reminds us that Wendy's sole purpose in this show is to be a womb for Kio whenever he finally learns what a boner is and what to do with it.
Oh, and they made the genocidal (to the point of not giving a fuck about killing his own men in the process) racist a commander.
Oh, and there's a really dumb looking mobile suit for Zeheart to feed his god-complex with. At first I thought it was going to be an Age-ified Quebley but of course not, that might actually be awesome.
Oh, and there's the astoundingly stupid thing about war BEGINNING when man moved to space. No matter how you try to explain it (maybe they really meant this, maybe its because of that) its still really fucking stupid, even by this show's abysmal standards.

Oh, was that Wendy? I've seen both her and Unoa so little that I can't really tell them apart anymore. At first I thought it was Wendy and was going to say something about her beggin Kio to hurry up and drop a pair so he can pollute her womb, but Unoa is the one that's been established as a nurse. Wendy's been too busy babysitting kids to do anything relating to being a nurse and I don't think we've see any indication that she has the skills or interest in being one. At the end of the scene, I still wasn't sure, but I was leaning towards Unoa.

Shitty writing
Well yes. But I like to let my hate flow in a deluge of anger at the writers. Have at the misogynists!
-This recap is trying it's damnedest to make last episode look exciting. You can't fool me. I saw that shit.
-Is Go Nagai of 1973 getting a credit as mechanical designer this episode? Cause that gold thing is so totally a kikaiju (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_Beasts).
-The Golden Mechanical Beast is Spiral Powered!? Or maybe those are just yellow getter Rays. Same result- WTF!?!?
-Gundam AGE you have done the impossible. You have made the Zakarello look like an elegantly designed Mobile Armor.
-New models, really? They just look like minor upgrades to the Magician's Eight's suits.
-"LU IS DEAD. REMEMBER HER? SHE DIED." Yeah I get it writers. Fuck off.
-Oh shit, that was all before the OP and I'm already annoyed at and tired of this episode.
-How come you don't want to use a nuke this time Flit?
-"Captain Anus, please repeat what I just said because you are my bitch." Fucking hate Flit.
-Whut? ZeHeart is out of his mobile suit and back on the bridge yelling at the guy that tried to murder him... WHY!? Why didn't they have a fight and why isn't fatass dead? They should at least still be both out in the thick of this largest of all Vegan battles ever.
-Dear Kio, Stop being a pussy, pussy. Signed, Everyone dying around you.
-Good job Tom Selleck.
-You suck at avoiding battleships Tom Selleck.
-Dude... Aim a little to the right! Just hit the ship next to the one Tom Selleck is ridiculously glued to.
-Actually better question is why hasn't Flit already hit the Fire Death Ray Now button while Captain Anus is having an emotional talk with a dead man? Since when does he wait for a woman!? Flit is not a patient mass murderer.
-Captain Anus has learned a moral: The needs of the many out way the needs of the few, or the one. Only took her an entire twenty episode character arc to learn it.
-See all those exploding mobile suits you didn't kill Kio? Yeah Selleck kinda died because you weren't being a good soldier and obeying orders. Pussy.
-Shit Dean Devlin is here. Quick pretend you're not home Kio or he will force you to read his script for Independance Day 2.
-Okay will someone stab Deen in the back already? I'm bored.
-For a split second I had a thought that could have made all of this bullshit writing and misogyny of AGE worth it. If the person who blew up Deen had been Girard Spriggan back from the dead. But no. It's just fatass. :(
-So Full Burst mode is just AGE-3 wasting all it's propellant fuel running every maneuvering thruster at maximum. Thus not actually moving at all. Kaaay.
-Oh it's also a blue Trans-Am. Which really is just a mechanically assisted copy of what Girard Spriggan did with an unAGEified mobile suit.
-WTF! Even when going into a murderous rage he regrets Kio doesn't kill the unrepentantly evil bad guy?
This battle would be way different if Girard Spriggan hadn't been killed by bad writing. No, I'm never going to stop bringing her up. She is the one truly good thing this show did. She shined so brightly but not for long.

Yay, Deen is dead. Didn't spend nearly as much time on him as I feared it would, but it was still far too much and every bit was painful to watch.
The Seric thing wasn't a bad idea and was executed somewhat decently but its far too late to salvage Natora's sorry excuse for a character arc. And she just ends up following the order to fire anyway. So, yeah, the big moment of her "character arc" is just giving the damn order to do what she was told to do.
And the scene doesn't even make sense. Since when would that have made Flit hesitate? He should have been screaming at her to just fire the damn thing, because he hates the Vagans and has shown that he's more than willing to sacrifice his own troops to do it. There was no reason for him to hesitate for Seric's sake. There's that quality Gundam AGE writing!

In the sense that its been 20 episodes since the arc began, sure. But they only spent three episodes (and an average of 30 seconds in each one) pretending to give a shit about her character arc.
-WTF! Even when going into a murderous rage he regrets Kio doesn't kill the unrepentantly evil bad guy?
At least he has a character related excuse. I still can't get over Flit not fucking killing the brat responsible for getting Yurin killed. Kio's been pulling this "don't kill" shit on everyone he's fought for the past ~5 episodes. Flit NEVER cared about that and then suddenly makes the explicit decision to NOT KILL the person he went into a psychotic rage on.

What the fuck, Gundam Age.
Fram never had any chance of surviving and while I was not happy about her being ordered to her death, I don't really have a problem with her death scene and how she got killed off. Her general characterization, motivations and character arc had problems (Zeheart-sama~~~) but her death.... I'm fine with it. She was actually pretty cool in her last fight.
On the other hand, the show somehow managed to piss me off with Zeheart's death. HOW IS THAT FUCKING POSSIBLE?!?! In theory, it can be interesting to kill off the person who you thought was going to be the final boss but here its just bizarre and an utterly horrible end to his storyline.
Zeheart *should* have been an interesting character. In an even remotely competently written show, he would have been. There were all sorts of interesting things they could have done with him, but instead he was the most laughably badly written character in the show that had a Y chromosome.

The Decline of Humanity is come to an end... :(
Hyouka no longer fills me with curiosity... :(
As the season wraps up I am filled with sadness.
I will convert that into pure anger with Gundam AGE.
-The Grammy's have a Transformer!
-There is no crying in space war! Suck it up cannon fodder.
-Did ZeHeart just become a midget on his own bridge? Or did the artists just stop caring about how tall he was aroing his knees?
-ZeHeart is haunted by the ghosts of Wolverine, the Magicians Eight and the Devil.
-Hey twintails loli, guess what. You're bait to kill the Gundam's once and for all. Death to Furher Flitler!
-Even at manipulating impressionable young girls you are the least competent of the Char copycats ZeHeart. Normally girls will gie for the love of a charismatic Char. Twintails here is doing it because she's a good soldier following orders.
-Pretty Magical Pentagram Power!
-Um Vegans... that's not how a Buckyball is design. You got the plans all jumbled up.
-Um Flit, you shouldn't be bad mouthing the Vegans for hitting friendlies to kill the enemy. Or did you for get all about the moon & nuke plan you had?
-AGE-1... Full Armor... Aile Strike... Fuck you Flit. You should be the one piloting the Diva into the line of fire while everyone else evacuates you sanctimonious old shit.
-Um who's gonna pilot the Diva? I kind of expected Flit to order Captain Anus to do it.
-Natora: "Fuck it. I'm a pirate now."
-Okay can the Diva transform into to the Giant Robot it's obviously always been (http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/toys/classics-universe/darkwind/1987/1/38/) NOW?
-Huh. Forgettable boy with twintails just got killed by a grunt.
-Oh wait it's death flag guy that got the ncute little glasses mechanic killed. You lived far too long bastard.
-Fram has gone into shock and is spouting gibberish.
-AHAHAHHAHAHAHA! Oh shit. This whole plan had nothing to do with the Gundams at all. Zeheart just wanted an excuse to fry the fat bastard. Hehehe.
-The magical McGuffing that should have been the focus of this whole war, the AGE system is no more. Well that was completely pointless.
-Whoops. Looks like you fucked up ZeHeart. What are you gonna do n-- AHAHAHHAHAHA! Mink, the rest of the Magicians Eight and everyone else is laughing at him. AHAHAHAHA! The ghosts are mocking him. This is priceless.
-ZeHeart is in Ze Fart.
-You just got your ass handed to you by an Old Type. ZeHeart, you suuuuuck.
-Asemu is finally confessing his love to ZeHeart. Hark I hear the sound of fangirls squeeing.
-ZeHeart wanted to have man babies!
Huh. So the guy built up to be the main villain is dead. Hell all the villains are dead. Guess Gundam AGE is done early. Well--
-Wait huh? A preview?
Why is there another episode? Every Vegan bad guy with a name is fucking dead. Show's over folks. I don't think you understand plot at all Gundam AGE... Not that that is a new revelation. Just that this is a much more basic rule than you normally break. You do not introduce a new character in the last fucking episode. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!?
Somehow this show has managed to get EVERYTHING possible wrong. That in itself is an unbelievable accomplishment.

I dunno.. we still have that surprise new character final boss
I'm sure he/she? will be even more laughable than Zeheart
The final boss will obviously be the super clone kid that Elcezant kept talking to. Still, it means the show is effectively introducing a new character in the last episode.

-Even at manipulating impressionable young girls you are the least competent of the Char copycats ZeHeart. Normally girls will gie for the love of a charismatic Char. Twintails here is doing it because she's a good soldier following orders.
....And because she's in love with him. Her character arc was "You killed my brother, so now I test you" > "Zeheart-saaamaaaaa~", so its kinda hard to forget.
-Um Flit, you shouldn't be bad mouthing the Vegans for hitting friendlies to kill the enemy. Or did you for get all about the moon & nuke plan you had?
The show has largely forgotten about him being an insane bastard, especially when its inconvenient. He had absolutely no reason to care about whatshisname that died last time. It showed him acting like it was this tragic decision, but if the show remembered how they'd built him up and portrayed him previously, he shouldn't have given a fuck about one guy dying if it meant blowing up a ship full of Vagans.
Also, speaking of character arcs,
-Natora: "Fuck it. I'm a pirate now."
Natora finally gave orders and looked like a captain while doing so. She was still just following orders for Flits plan. Her sorry, pathetic excuse for a character arc is now officially over. It was as laughably horrible as I could have hoped. She is mascot for this show's particularly horrible treatment of its female cast. Well.... no, this show is so horrible that no single character can serve that purpose. LOL Wendy. Arisa... *cries*
-The magical McGuffing that should have been the focus of this whole war, the AGE system is no more. Well that was completely pointless.
Yeah, remember when the AGE System was this big fucking deal? I'd pretty much forgotten about it until this episode reminded me. Oh god, this show is so stupid.
Somehow this show has managed to get EVERYTHING possible wrong. That in itself is an unbelievable accomplishment.
This show is a monument to horrible writing.

Yeah clone boys has technically been in a few episodes. But he was in a tube 90% of that time. He did launch in a mobile suit two episodes ago but hasn't done jack squat since. In all this huge war going on we haven't seen him do a damn thing.

Okay yeah. I guess she does "love" him at the end. But it just feels misplaced and half hearted. Going from "I fucking hate you!" to "I wuv you" is just bizarre. Then again this show doesn't understand women AT ALL. And most of the time after she learned ZeHeart wasn't an asshole (surprise! he is in the end) it seemed more like she just admired and respected him. Not loved.

Don't mention it
I'm really.. really upset what they are did with Fram
what a huge waste
why does she even like him?
He fails as a soldier
He fails as a commander
He has no conviction of his own
and I honestly don't think he's into her. (he wants to make man babies with Asemu)

Speaking of which, wouldn't this entire goddamn thing make about a bajillion times more sense if Asemu were a girl, and if Kio was the son of Asemu and Zeheart?
THAT WOULD ACTUALLY MAKE KIO FUCKING RELEVANT!
But no, we can't have good plot. That would take effort.

He did? I don't remember seeing him outside the tube at all. Not that it makes a difference, either way, they're still really introducing him in the last episode.

You know.. it's probably healthier to not even bother thinking about this... but that's there's just one more episode to go, so why the heck not.
upon retrospect..
For all Kio's preaching about understanding, the Vagans haven't done much to deny the Flitt's accusations that they're monsters
Just look at episode 48:
Algreus: Would the Vagans really fire on their own people?
Flitt: Of course! They Vagans after all
and what do they do? They fire on their own people
What is the show trying to say? Is Gundam AGE a broken aesop?

Indigestion from bad stir fry. Back pain from sleeping on a couch. Allergy season kicking into high gear. And an episode of Gundam AGE to watch. The last episode. I feel the need. The need for rage.
-ZeHeart's death makes Kabuki Quantum Fighter sad. Me, I don't give any fucks.
-Wait I though clone boy launched a few episodes ago? Maybe it was Deen. It's hard to fucking identify anyone inside those ugly Vegan space suits.
-Evangeleon Dragoon?
-SEIG ZEON! Err I mean oh yippie that Quebley knock off is still around.
-Asemua: "ZeHeart-sama... I will never forget you. My feelings for you will carry on." Why couldn't they have gotten married at the end of the second generation and had manbabies?
-Um genes don't mean shit without any training. If you really wanted an emotionless super warrior, there are robots for that.
-"Our ship blew up so obviously we are a better bridge crew than pirates with years more experience fighting Vegans. Give us your seats." Teh hell?
-Okay. I admit it. Seeing Captain Anus in that pirate throne is kinda cool. Or would be IF IT HAD HAPPENED A DOZEN EPISODES AGO!
-Kind of hard to follow a fight when the bad guy is in a pitch black scrawny dragonbot set against the blackness of space. "I attack the darkness!"
-An X-rounder of a whole new power level you say? Well let's see him control all the attack bits and fin funnels on the battle field. Oh what's that? he can't do that? THEN HE'S NOT AS STRONG AS GIRARD SPRIGGAN YOU ASSHOLES!
-Quebley Knock Off ate clone boy's suit... the fuck is this ZOIDS now?
-Flitler has a nuke! Genocide in 3... 2... Actually it really doesn't fit with Flit's character that it has taken this many episodes for him to aim a nuke at Second Moon.
-SHOOT HIM DOWN ANUS!
-Flit, You're-in a guilt trip dream sequence. *sunglasses.gif*
-Yurin: "Guess what. I was a Vegan."
-Corpses: "Congratulations Flit!" :(
-Really... Dead people tell him he's awesome and Flit is suddenly not the biggest racist in space anymore? Fuck you horrible writers. You wouldn't understand a character arc if it fucked you in the ass.
-What? NO! No. No Asemu. You do not call your racist father who has hated you for years a cool dude because of this out of character action.
-SPAAAACE BAZOOOOOOKA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtr4ox7GbDE&t=2m50s)!
-HOLY SHIT! Haro can talk?
-Um Lord Ezlepants... if you could have brought Second Moon into Earth orbit and get all the Vegan people away from the whatever the fuck Martian radiation all along... WHY THE FUCK DID YOU WAIT 50 FUCKING YEARS TO DO IT!? That cute little sick girl Kio met and thousands upon thousands more died because you are a moron.
-What... You built a statue to Flitler? Is that the Flitler museum (http://mst3k.wikia.com/wiki/Invasion_of_the_Neptune_Men#Quotes_.26_References) behind him? FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU!
Worst. Gundam. Ever. Might even be worst mecha show ever. Definitely worst toy commercial based property ever. A strong contender for most misogynist anime in the past 50 years. So says the Book of Rage!
