Not in my opinion!

Now don't get me wrong. It's a very well done story from what I can remember and even animation wise, but then they decided to get fancy and overlay the video in such a way that it looks like an old japanese silkscreen or something along that line. That was the theory anyways.

But in practice, it just looks horrible. Like somebody spilled whitewash over the whole damn thing. You can see that there's beautiful animation under it, but it's almost completely obscured. What a pity!

I was sooooo disappointed, I just gave my copy away to my nephew. He took one look at it and chucked it as well. Too bad as there was a great little ova hidden underneath all that artsy crap. If only you could have actually seen it.

Artistically speaking it's interesting; starts out with the colors desaturated and as the feature goes on colors start to fill in. It's slow-paced but there's some fluid animation and stylish duels. Story and character-wise? Didn't follow it. It seemed like there was some knowledge or context that I needed in order to understand Kai Doh Maru. IIRC it's related to Otogi no Zoshi in some way, but considering that series came after KDM I have to wonder how much watching OnZ would illuminate it.

What's the asking price? If it's much higher than $10 I would say take a pass.
