Wasn't planning on it so soon, but since CR will be taking it down around the 31st, I might as well get a re-watch out of the way, use it as an excuse to comment. Note, you don't have to watch at the same rate as me. Just remember that if you're relying on watching by the CR method, your time is limited. Keep that in mind.

This is the story of a girl named Ayumi that got lost. A girl that met three other girls including one she'd have a fateful encounter with.

In any case, Torako is the one that really stands out here. And yes, she's the fateful encounter, go figure.

Side note, this show has a zodiac naming theme going on, and the core four even borrow from those four. Ie Genbu, Suzaku, etc.

I want to join the magic clubs! They sound awesome.

Never play sports with Torako, a lesson taught multiple times.

Still some of the outfits are nice. Be it in the sport scenes or the imagined scenes.

Everyone loves Ayumi. And I mean everyone.

That's too bad - it is one of the better school comedy series out there imo and definitely worth the time. Guess the show was on borrowed time over on CR - honestly, I'm surprised that it lasted as long as it did there. Don't know if I'll have to time to rewatch Hyakko before CR yanks it off their site, but I'll definitely rewatch Episode 9 as it's one of my all-time favorite anime episodes (mainly the second part).

Note that this series is actually in none-chronological order. With this being "4" and "9" in that order. So part of the fun is seeing references to past events.

The second segment with Chie was amusing and you get Mecha Torako. And then Mecha Suzume.

The real fun is the first segment. Not only do we get glimpses of some of the supporting cast, we're introduced to Nene.

Nene is awesome, she's the Class President. She's also bi. She's also got this look of confidence like she's all that, and it works. She's certainly an interesting one.

Oh, the fun part? Suzume is on the Tree Planting Committee. Torako is actually a disciplinary officer. Those two were elected while absent. Also, if the eye catch is any indication, I think Ayumi is on the Health Committee.

In any case, this is where the real fun of the show starts. The cast expands and the core four have more people to interact with.

In part 3, it's time to eat at the Cafeteria. A part that shows just how powerful Suzume really is. A power that comes at a price. Lack of bounce.

Part 6 focused on an art class scene was fun. In part because we got to experience Ayumu posing and then Torako posing with her hair down and such.

Nene clearly approves of Torako showing off and decides now is a good time to ravage her.

Koma, the camera girl of the series lives for the yen.

Yuki and Hitsugi make for an amusing pair. Clearly we need more of them.

Meh, I wish CR had the actual titles in the episodes. Not always easy to check. In any case, the first segment has to take place after part 6 and the second likely takes place before part 9.

The first part is mainly about introducing us to Yanagi who takes pictures of people and sells them for money. We also have Sengoku, a guy that notices the girl of his dreams in one of the pictures.

And yes, as always the girl he's pointing out is in the background of the picture. Funny how that works.

I was a bit confused by the accidental confession. Since even if the name was wrong, he should still recognize the difference by visual, but most likely he was under the impression that "Ayumi" was a friend of the girl he was trying to confess to.

The second segment boils down to Torako spending quality time with Ushio. Which includes Ushio singing TWELVE BEAST GODS! It's wrong enough to be amusing.

Oh, and back to the first part. That Torako image is divine and I plan to steal it from the guy and have it for myself.

Also, Ayumi shall try to save you from falling and succeed in pushing you out the window instead.

And now we have a Tatsuki episode. Could she be lonely? Maybe. Either way Torako, Ayumi, and Suzume decided to invite themselves over to Tatsuki's place and we get most of the episode dedicated to this.

We also get a fake preview which includes characters we haven't been introduced to yet. It's kind weird and some of it might work better the second time around, once you're more familiar with some people.

I have to wonder if CR gets some series for streaming by agreeing to have them for a short period only. Granted, it depends on how you define short. Is two years short? Is one year long.

Ah, episode 9's second half was amusing. I'm kind of looking forward to seeing episode 8 again just for that aspect.

In any case, I think the main reason this show works is that it actually remembers there's a supporting cast. Sure, most of the series is focused on the core four, but other people do shine.

On a side note, I think I need to get back to the manga. Start off from the point where the anime ends and then be sad that this show never did well enough to get another season.

I guess it all depends on who they licensed from and what the situation is with the particular title. Some Kadokawa titles have been rather short-lived (only a few months), but they were all licensed by FUNimation (and I think the only one we didn't know was licensed by them beforehand was Sora no Otoshimono's original series).

Everything from Suzu's casual walking down the school halls, the first-person view, her classmates handing out various snacks from candy to cookies and whatnot, and my favorite part of the episode - the voice-overs when she received said snacks from her classmates. It was cleverly executed and fully brought out Suzu's charm. That's why it's one of my all-time favorite episodes in anime.

I just recently watched the episode and I hope I cam remember the order of snacks that Suzume received from her classmates. I think it was in this order:

Candy - Cookies - Bread (Pan) - Juice - Onigini - Gum - Potato Chips - Pockily (Pocky) - Shortbread - Cocoa - 4 other snacks that weren't named (though one of them was Kit Kat) - Confeito (complete with a creepy deep-sounding voice over) - Buns.

Not a bad day's work for Torako's friend and sidekick .

I have draw mad scientists and evil dictators (http://strangefour.deviantart.com/art/Merry-Squidmas-Inks-275166505). Now it's time for Hyakko!

-Love at first suicide attempt?
-This OP and these character design are out of the late 90s. I like it.
-Enough of quiet girl with no sense of direction. Bring on the lunatics.
-Upper crusty girl has been trapped into Nonomura's vortex of lostness.
-We've got a jumper.
-Not a very good lander.
-I think Tora & Suzu just escaped from some completely different show. Possibly a genderswapped Lupin the 3rd.

-Screw the gardening club and their rules.
-Suzucles. Heh.
-TIGER PUNCH!

The classical music mixed with rock, energetic angular character designs and playful direction are great. But I'm not liking Ayumi. She's too bland. She doesn't make a good Fujiko to Torako's Lupin.

Oh god, the penguin is killing Kyubey. With his trademark bug spray. That's hilarious. And when I try to think of an explanation for why Homura's face looks like that, with Madoka right next to her and the rest of their bodies hidden, my mind goes straight to the gutter. Is that Kyouko hiding next to the alligator man?

Anyway, that's a very nice picture. You certainly have some artistic talent.

-Ninjas, gangsters, idols, Kagekage Four! Tora is of course red.
-Clubs for evey rpg character class and lacross.
-Curaga! Meteor!
-Baseball club! *Suddenly remembers he hasn't finished Princess Nine*
-SAIKYO BATTERY!

-Sports manga jokes. Eeeh.
-Hehe. The chibi ball chucking is cute.
-Time to gather `round the ol` Suzumas tree.
-No one cares about the world cup Tatsuki.
-Pin-pon~

Ayumi's supposed to be Genbu isn't she. Genbu always gets the lowest ranking in anime versions. :\

Everyone loves Ayumi. And I mean everyone.

Which I do not get. Of the four she's the least appealing looking. Are the sparkling bending over poses supposed to indicate she is the bustiest? Doesn't seem like it.

No. The girl behind the couch, next to Huitzilli the Godzilla wanna-be, is meant to be Poplar. In the standard view we normally get of her. Maybe I should have added her arms flailing upward for attention.

Kitsune is quite the devious one, so he really is a fox. We also learn that foxes and tigers are related Yeah, he's the elder brother of Torako.

Kobayashi makes for a good summer model. That convinced me.

The battery just had to die after Yagi convinced Hitsugi to have her picture taken and before it could be taken. There's a lesson here.

Suwako Moriya

In this episode, Ino who reminds people of Sadako tries to make friends and then in the next segment gets a makeover. Not that it lasts long.

And that makeover segment leads to hairstyles galore. Nene declares Torako as her number one.

Yagi and Hitsugi have another short segment.

Hairstyles makes this one of the better episodes.

-Bust up messagey. Oh?
-Only Tora would get on a school commity by being absent.
-Nene, class president, future madam of a bordello.
-Hello supporting cast who ignores the non-existent dress codes.
-Punk. Beatnik kitty. Mihoshi.
-Nene only joined this fashion review so she could find the hottest girls in school... Sweet.
-Nerd. Walking ghost. Touma.

-Even evil seductive bisexual villainess has to start somewhere. this is one such story.
-Wow, Nene comes right out and says it.

-Meanwhile on the set of Batman: The Animated Series, mad science is a foot.
-It's a Gundam down here!
-Shotaro? No no. She's not even Johny Socko. I shall call her Dr Insano-chan.
-#28 has an adorable Yui face.
-*spittake* Heh. E-lectra (http://marvel.wikia.com/Elektra_Natchios_%28Earth-616%29/Gallery).
-Suzu wants to be a Gundam when she grows up.
-Mecha-Tora isn't very impressive.
-W... who is Tora on a date with?
-Suzu ready for launch!

Animation is veering way off model. Eyes keep growing. But it seems like it's just the wear and tear of all the wild takes having an effect on the characters. Comedy is making the very fabric of their being unstable.

-Now we go on an all expence paid tour of the cafeteria.
-American amazons are clumsy and weepy. Petite Japanese are far superior.
-So food coupons are like YuGiOh cards? Meal Mega Morph!
-Ayumi is a sparkling sleeping princess? You can do better Tora.
-Tora will fight about anything. Is noodle national pride worth the bloodshed?
-Suzu is the designated bottomless pit.
-Pockly~

-Koma is a damn dirty hippy. But oddly cute and catlike. I'm torn.
-Oh that's why the animation seemed wonky before. They just blew it all on Nene's expressions. Excellent decision gentlemen. Bravo.
-Dr Insano-chan gets stuck drawing an eyeless yokai. Shame she can only draw in circuit board layouts.
-Ayumi's photoshoot has gone to a bad place.
-Suzu RX-78 has a Y-balance pose. I hope that wasn't aimed at Nene.
-Tora. Is. Cute.
-AHAHAHAH. Nene shows up and goes all Lupin on Tora. Literally.
-Nene just spent 1200yen on spank material.

Four episodes in and the character models are all over he place. But it's still fun. Nene being flamboyantly aggressive doesn't hurt either.

-Did I accidentally start up an episode of Ghost in the Shell?
-In an era of digital photography and cellphone cameras and and internet filled with porn, a boy expects to sell prints of cute girls.
-Boys be smitten.
-Classical music is great. But this piece keeps making me think "car commercial."
-Ayumi just murdered her future stalker.
-Wait... is that a Detective Conan eyecatch?

-The soundtrack of stalker love is very Dynasty Warriors.
-Oooh he likes Tora. She will break him like a twig.

-TOrako follows a stray punk around for the day.
-Woo! Twelve Beast Gods! Why have I not heard this song before?
-KAREOKE WAR!!
-Apply kitten directly to punk. Removes tough uncaring edifices in seconds.
-Thanks for reminding me I never saw Ushio & Tora.

I can not get why Ayumi is so popular. She looks like the most average blonde ever. Tora is best! I lie. Nene is the bestest, but Tora is the top of the main four.

I won't deny that Torako is problematic. However I think Touma could experiment with the idea of not being so uptight about things.

In any case, the flashback with her and Torako was curious.

Touma feels the others are weirdos and underlings of Torako.

The real fun was Nene getting some of the other girls to reveal their lunches. We learn a shocking truth. Different flavored snacks don't count as a balanced diet. In spite of what Minato make think.

Oh, and Yagi made her future wife sad. What? Who else am I going to pair Hitsugi up with?

-Nene narrates her lesbian fantasies out loud. :D
-Nene wants a dream lover. So she doesn't have to dream alone. *sniffle*
-Today the dragon rides alone.
-Ayumi prepare for Operation: Human Shield.

-Suzu wants grown up underwear too.

Poor lonely Tatsuki.

-Summer uniforms. Men in white blouses. Girls in Hawaiian shirts.
-Hairlip girl stands out too much. Not because of her hairlip or head scarf or lack of eyes. But she's the only girl with earrings. If you're going to include earrings anime, give them to more than one girl or it just looks very odd. Unless that girl is Ganeha Hibiki. In which case it just makers her more awesome.
-Photography is a tough summer sport.
-Creased eyebrows. Cute.
-Boys be nutty as a fruit cake.
-BROTHER!?

-PANTSU!
-Tora's panties are too powerful. I nev--- err Nene never stood a chance.
-Death by soup swap.

I don't like the summer uniforms. This show is visually distinct and better because of the black shirts. They contrast better against the cream uniforms and orange ties. Bring back winter!

Kitsune sucked the enjoyment out of every scene he was in. :(

-Sadako-chan is a frighteningly beautiful creature born of ancient nightmares.
-Someone needs to give her a big hug. But who... the Occult Club from K-ON?
-Good luck Sadako-chan. Make a friend. Tora is a good choice.
-Japan is too pun friendly. Handkerchief should not sound like "bloody grave."
-It just gets worse for her. :\
-Suzu: "Get off ma woman!"
-Girls. It's not funny if you point it out. We already figured it out seven Openings ago.
-Well calling her Sadako is funny. But the picture in picture was not.
-Trading cellphone numbers is becoming like the "first kiss" in anime. Something magical and pure.
-Ino's sense of humor is inhuman.

-It's makeover time. Not that Ino needs it' She's cute. Just needs to show an eye off.
-Tora is the worst hairdresser.
-Nene tested. Nene approves.

That was much better than last episode. Ino is adorably shy and cute. Wrapped under the "frightening long haired ghost in a horror movie" exterior.

-Touma, don't deny your true feelings.
-Tora's army is filled with oddities.
-All food belongs to Suzu. ALL FOOD. Hmm she might be a good candidate for a certain discount food based combat.
-Nene has assembles the secondary characters into a gang. Be ambitious Nene!
-Bento stats!
-So Torako got Ino's lunch and gave it to the teacher to make up for breaking his phone... and each scene was in reverse order. or am I confused?

"Love" at first sight is not always a good thing. I'd rather the show focused on Nene & her gang of weirdos now. Even if I really like Tora. Nene is in all ways better.

We're at last properly introduced to Oniyuri aka the blue haired chick. She's the student council president and the older sister of Torako.

This episode was mainly about bringing to light that Torako has family issues. We also find out she's actually from a different mother. A mother that's passed away. So she's essentially a half-sister.

So one could conclude that Torako is the way she is because she's lonely.

The song played near the end was rather nice sounding and perfect for a final episode, but wait there's one more. Which I'll get to in time, I think

Suwako Moriya
12-29-2011, 08:00 AM
And we end the series with an episode that takes place before the very first episode. Not that this anime has been in chronological order in the first place. In any case we, get to discover just hows things went on the day of the entrance ceremony.

Some of it like Torako running away was already hinted at. Certainly personality quirks and such like Minato being "sad" are established.

However the fun thing is we get to meet some family members. Such as Ino having a sister for example. That was educational.

Torako, you should have just accepted Suzu's love instead of toying with her emotions.

So, err we end with "blatant season 2" teasing with the Hitsugi scene. Of course since the show didn't do that well (from what I remember) and it seems like few series get a second season anyway, it's off to the world of manga.

Yeah, I'm starting to read manga more because of all these "Not worthy of another season" moments.
