The cast of the Oreimo (Ore no Imōto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai) anime series announced during their "Yūichi no Manma 2 ~Taketatsu to Hanazawa ga Debut Suru Wake ga Nai~" stage event at Anime Contents Expo on Sunday that production on a second season has been green-lit.
EDIT: Now, Crunchyroll is reporting on the news too (http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2012/03/31-1/ore-no-imouto-ga-konna-ni-kawaii-wake-ga-nai-season-two-green-lit). Maybe this is real, after all...
At the Anime Contents Expo stage for the debut of Kana Hanzawa and Ayana Taketatsu entitled "Taketatsu to Hanazawa ga Debut-suru Wake ga Nai," it was announced that Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai (aka OreImo) will be getting a second season. The official site has updated to announce that production of season two has been green lit and the official twitter for Kirino (https://twitter.com/kirino_kousaka/status/186337998445617152) from OreImo has revealed that more details will be revealed in an article on Akiba Blog tomorrow, which frequently has first reveals from the OreImo novels. The first season previously aired in Winter of 2011.

Oh, they definitely announced it there. If it's an April Fool's joke, then Aniplex would have to be involved because the official Kirino twitter said it, too. And there's this: http://yfrog.com/h689kiej
Producing something like that costs money, so I doubt they'd do that just for a joke. :P

Wish major industry conventions wouldn't be scheduled on April Fools'. Still, this isn't the kind of thing companies April Fool us about. They have a product to sell, and there's a big difference between an obvious April Fools joke and just a straight up purposeless lie.
So, this is very promising. We'll see...

Oh great, this is fantastic news. I adore this series.
And it's very bad business for businesses to pull April Fools jokes where it seems like it could be a real thing. The joke has to be so unrealistic to the point where no one can believe it, such as an Oreimo mecha series and the character designs are all completely different. You can't say "second season!... nah just kiddin" because no one likes it when you do that, especially not the customers.

It should be released some time this month.
So, the 2nd season will probably cover volumes 6, 7, 8 and 10 with possible episodes from the side-stories of volume 9. Maybe another 16 episodes?
Why is it that I can see a third season already? :D

I don't see any reason to doubt something like this. The first series was a huge success, so a sequel was pretty much guaranteed to happen, barring an Infinite Stratos situation. If this had turned out to be an April Fool's joke, it would be one of the worst ones in history.

April 10th, apparently.
I didn't even realize the next volume had been solicited until I saw the Gamers tokuten listing for it while I was just looking around at the bonuses for random other books yesterday. I had been relying on my Amazon.jp search bookmark, but Amazon still doesn't have it listed for some reason. But several other sites list it as the 10th.

So the novels are ending with volume 12. They've been 4-6 months between volumes so far, so it could come out in January to coincide with a Winter '13 sequel, otherwise maybe we'll see the anime in Spring '13.
Assuming they plan to cover all remaining material in the sequel. If not, there's no real reason they'd need to coincide, though I suppose it could help sales. I don't know how many volumes we covered in season one and I avoid looking up anything OreImo related because I know there are so many spoilers out there.

OreImo season 1 covered the first 5 volumes. That would leave 7 volumes for season 2 to cover, but one of the volumes is a collection of side-stories (plus there are a few short stories that could be adapted).
If the anime wants to cover everything in one shot, then 2-cour would make the most sense. If not, then we would need 2 more seasons (including the upcoming one) to cover everything properly.

How often does a TV anime begin a full year after it's officially announced? I knew such a big title would have to at least wait until the season after next to begin, but I was surprised to see it not turn up for Fall. I always assume these big titles will begin in Fall or Spring, but I thought it couldn't possibly wait a full year after its announcement to begin. But maybe so. It just seems strange to announce it so early. Maybe that wasn't the plan at the time? I'll be curious to see which season it does end up airing in. If it's Winter, I assume we'll at least start hearing some more information about it, since there hasn't been much of that since its announcement. If it continues to be quiet, I'll probably start assuming more and more that it will be Spring.

If it ends up being two cour, then I guess the novel could come out in March or later and still be at least somewhat close to the end of the anime. I still kinda have a feeling they'll cram the last 7 novels into one cour + bonus episodes though.

I think you just made more of an argument for AIC continuing Oreimo than you did A-1 Pictures taking over production. Even though A-1 is a pretty big studio now, they've got a lot on their plate and AIC Build is doing Haganai in Winter/January while Oreimo is April. Plus AIC Build could totally do two cour, there's nothing preventing them or saying "this is a single cour studio" as there's a first time for everything.
Though as you said, key staff will probably be the same or similar. They have been promoting the second season before this announcement with the same staff so there's no doubt it'll be similar.

With 7 volumes left and plans to cover them all, you'd want at least 21 episodes, which goes well beyond what can be done with BD bonus episodes. This has to be two cour... unless they cut out a whole lot of material.

I cannot fathom the rest of the novels crammed into 1-cour considering how much material that needs to be covered. I don't remember all the details that happen in the volumes not covered yet, but it's possible that one or two volumes can be covered in 2-episodes like what Haganai NEXT did (covered volume 5 in two episodes...but those two episodes seemed to have done a decent job).
Assuming 2-cour, each volume outside of volume 9 (side-stories) can be adapted at the same pace as season 1. The four side-stories could get their own episode. That gives us 22 episodes. What to do with the 2-episodes? Either expand how many episodes cover a volume of the novel or maybe something anime original like what season 1 did for one episode.
