A-1 Pictures + aliens + fishing x Tomokazu Sugita + water guns of mass WTF = ???

Wow...oh wow...this has to be one of A-1 best looking shows since Sora no Woto. Stunning in HD.
Evil dragons...can not stand up to pretty goddesses.
The grandmother strikes a nice balance between sweet and cool. I can't believe she just lets Haru walk up to her and proclaim he'll live at her home.
Yuki is drowning...WTF? In fact, this whole show is WTF.
Sugita...with a duck.
Haru's watergun is scary. Haru is all kinds of fun and messed up.
"Let's save the world." Hai, Captain Haru!
What a delightfully weird and wonderful show. Looks fantastic as well.
04-14-2012, 01:33 AM
Well, that was definitely the strangest first episode of the season.
I'm finding it extremely difficult to care about anything that happened though.
And Yuki's issues are really annoying to watch.
04-14-2012, 02:17 AM
I was cautiously optimistic going into this one, and after that first episode, I have no idea how I feel about what I saw. Some definite positive things I can point out right away, though: I really loved the animation A-1 did for this. That's going to be nice to keep watching. And I guess overall that's my consensus, that for now it seems good enough to keep watching. It's definitely not all good, though. The content itself is so bizarre that it's hard to figure out how I feel about it, but I definitely don't find myself caring a great deal about the narrative and characters quite yet.
04-14-2012, 07:27 PM
Goddamn, Yuki is a fuckup. Way too many "acting awkward in the middle of class" scenes for my taste. Those are almost always really painful to watch, in an unentertaining sort of way.
But the episode was otherwise pretty good. And very colorful. I also hope the girl who saw him on the train is a recurring character.
04-15-2012, 08:32 PM
I also hope the girl who saw him on the train is a recurring character.
I suspect we'll see her again. The only other student on the train was Natsuki, so her presence makes me think she's more than just background scenery. (She's not the girl at the tackle store, is she?)
After being rather unmoved by Nakamura's last two outings, I enjoyed this show quite a bit. I also liked the sound track, particularly the music underpinning the fishing scene on the dock.
04-19-2012, 04:52 PM
Good to know the story is ready to begin. So far it's been weird as all hell. At least it's safe to assume it will continue to be about fishing with these characters, and the growth that their interactions will supply, especially for the main character, and hopefully he'll soon be making all of his decisions based on what he truly wants for himself, rather than under the threat of alien mind control.
04-20-2012, 08:30 AM
So some guy named Haru claims he's an alien? Great, now I'm thinking about Harumi Nation....
I'm not sure what to make of this. It certainly had energy to it, but it didn't feel like anything settled into place yet. Still it might be worth trying another episode or two. Perhaps they were just in introductory mode.
04-20-2012, 12:47 PM
Yuki & Haru, now that's a weird couple.
Natsuki always seems kinda grumpy and disintrested.
Haru is definitely the life of every party/group.
That water gun totally has some special power.
At least Yuki is making some progress.
The weird transfer student Akira seems like a future member of their weird group.
I looked it up and Haru is voiced by Miyu Irino, who does Chizuru in Kimi to Boku. I thought it had to be the same VA since the voice was so annoying.
Sometimes the style reminds me of Peter Max.
Yuki's freaking out face is just too ugly.
Ok, this show seems to be going in a direction that the synopsis didn't make very clear. Fer Christ sake, a 25 year old just joins a high school class? Aliens with mind control water pistols? I just hope Remon shows up to take care of this idiots.
Yuki's grandmother is turning out to be the sane one.
04-20-2012, 11:26 PM
It was quite a weird episode... It has potential and the animation sure looks different compare to what I'm use to, so it makes it unique and I sure like it. I only hope there will not be too many Yuki's issues because they are really annoying.
04-22-2012, 04:03 PM
- I don't like Haru. Something about this personality and voice on a male character always iritates me.
- Yay I knew the pink hair girl from the OP would be Haru's sister.
- She's awesome. And she also has a Magical Watergun Of Not Having To Come Up With Scene Transitions.
- Ooh Natsui's sister is cute. And it's another Oogura Yui role, yay.
- And she's got her brother wrapped around her finger. Her cuteness controls him.
- I really hate Yuki's freak-out face. Actually I just don't like Yuki in general.
I love Haru's sister, and Natsuki's sister, and girl-who-laughed-at-Yuki-on-the-rain. But I don't think I like any of the main guys. I don't dislike Natsuki yet per se, but he's too mopey for me and the whole "you remarried too fast!" thing gets old. Maye Indian duck guy would be okay but he hasn't done anything yet.
Not sure if I'll watch more of this. On the one hand, I think this episode got a few annoying character quirks outo f the way. On the other hand, it was a real chore to get through when the girls weren't on screen and I need to drop about 7-10 of the shows I started this season to have any hope of staying current on the ones I like best.
04-26-2012, 03:56 PM
The fishing experience continues...
Practicing accuracy was fun to watch.
Yamada & his crew look like a fun bunch as well ^^
Yuki was feeling down 'cause of his grandma, but he persisted with his training.
Haru is just amazing with his ability to be so cheerful.
04-26-2012, 04:32 PM
Considering they said the story was about to begin at the end of the previous episode, I was surprised to see how similar this one was. Again, Yuki gets taught a technique involved in successful fishing by Natsuki and spends the episode working on it, finally accomplishing his goal at the end, as it ties into his own personal struggles in his life. Nice and uplifting, but I'd like to see some bigger developments. I would imagine that this alien conflict develops some more at some point, although it would be kind of amusing if they just kept Haru hanging out and fishing with Yuki the whole time while Akira got more impatient to actually have something to do. I do like our four leads quite a bit, though. Duck!
04-29-2012, 04:45 PM
- I don’t think you have a lot of chance to have a normal school life, Yuki.
- Who was she? Another character with a water gun…
- Oh, she is Haru’s sister and her name is Koko.
- Yuki is the only one who can save the earth? Ok… And he needs to fish to save it.
- So, now Yuki knows what the water gun is doing exactly. Poor Yuki, he probably wonders what he did when he was control…
- The line broke… no surprise at all…
- Yuki’s issues are still a pain to watch…
- Yuki finally did it. About time.
- Another new student. He is 25 years old…and brings a duck with him… Hmm… will see who he is soon enough.
Well, that was ok. I’ll keep watching and hope it will get better. Koko is cute, but I hope she will stop bullying. I hope Haru will stop as well.
04-30-2012, 05:54 AM
Koko makes for nice eye candy even if she is essentially a bully. In fact that might be the main problem with the series.
The fact that Haru is more like a bully than anything else. Not as much as his sister, but....
Still there may be some hope that Haru has decided the "bully path" is not the best way to win friends.
So please tell me random gods of anime that this series is past the bullying phase, otherwise it's going to be hard to watch anymore. Especially if it's just going to be Haru and others treating Yuki like crap.
04-30-2012, 05:56 AM
Not sure if I'll watch more of this.
For me, it will depend partially on how much else I'm watching. I still need to try a few shows. That and there's the question of whether or not, it can stop being "Bullying the Anime".
05-03-2012, 02:00 PM
Yuki catches a fish! But his phone breaks just in time that he can't show Haru, who thinks he's lying. Did they say what they were going to do with them once they caught them? If he has no way of proving it, I'm guessing they just let it go, unless Natsuki took it for himself and ate it or something. The former seems much more likely. Oh well, now their relationship is significantly mended, so they should be able to civilly fish together from now on, and if Yuki could get it once, there's no reason he can't in all the time they'll have together from now on. Nice to see some more happening.
05-03-2012, 04:20 PM
Haru sure is one cheerful alien ^^
Still learning how to fish.
Seems like each time they add a new fishing lesson for Yuki and Haru LOL
Their little fight left Yuki missing Haru more than he expected.
It's nice Yuki finally managed to catch a fish ^^
05-05-2012, 04:27 PM
- Isn’t that clear? They don’t want to know your name; they want to know the duck name! Tapioca.
- When Haru said to Yuki “don’t worry everyone dies…” that must have hurt Yuki badly… Ouch.
- Arg…a Yuki’s issue at 18:30… I would have hope to have none of them… and because of that he succeed…
How many episodes will be about practice?
05-10-2012, 03:27 PM
Seems like Yuki became really interested in fishing.
First time boat fishing! It was pretty fun ^^
Yuki was a bit down since he didn't have much luck.
Seems like he just needed to get used to the new way of fishing.
05-10-2012, 10:55 PM
Wow, everything was very positive at the end there. Even more than usual. All the characters are together, and Yuki is being very successful in fishing, proving himself to be a good worker, and having lots of fun. I guess Akira needs to become better friends with the rest. Which may be a little difficult given his reason for being there in the first place, but considering how good of friends Haru has become with everyone, I'm sure he'll be fine. Things definitely weren't that positive earlier in the episode, as usual, and Yuki was really pissing me off for the first time in a while, since I've gotten used to his usual whiny nature and/or he toned it down recently, but at least Captain is an awesome boss and everything worked out in the end.
05-11-2012, 03:02 PM
- Having Haru help you in the house….is not a good idea…
- Yuki almost catch a big fish. Too bad.
- Haru, you should not have use the water gun for that kind of things, you should not have use the water gun at all actually…
- Yuki caught his first fish and it’s quite a big one.
- Of course, the phone broke…
- Well, Haru and Yuki seems more friendly now.
Well, it’s still decent enough to keep watching.
05-11-2012, 03:30 PM
- Duck will win against a cat.
- Yeah, fishing equipment is expensive.
- That was an easy interview. If all of them could be easy like that.
- Man of the sea who doesn’t know how to swim… ^_^
- Yuki is standing, about time.
- At least, he is better day after day. I hope he will continue that way.
05-17-2012, 02:04 PM
So hey. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT ALL ABOUT? Well something is definitely happening now. At least it's got my interest. Now hopefully we'll be seeing lots more of this unfold, instead of just going back to regular fishing days. They were nice, but they served their purpose, and I'd like for the series to move on to this big stuff that's starting to show itself here.
05-17-2012, 02:50 PM
Yuki is more & more into fishing and his new job on the boat.
It's amazing how fired up about it he is.
Going for Tuna was ambitious, especially for him who's still a beginner.
I was surprised even Yamada joined them.
Yuki sure did his best with that tuna and it payed off ^^
Haru kinda lost it and overdid it with his water gun.
05-19-2012, 08:36 PM
- I really hope she will be able to leave the hospital at the end of the week.
- It’s great every time Koko have screen time, but she has far from enough.
- A spot where a fishing boat disappear? No one want to go there now? Hmm…
- Let’s do everything to catch tuna.
- Good work Yuki.
- What was that all about?
- Well, they are all safe.
It was an interesting episode, let’s hope we will have more explanations.
05-24-2012, 02:08 PM
No real explanations about anything that happened last time. Just that Haru is now interested in anything but fishing. Lots of normal human drama in this one, and now Sakura is missing. What is going on in Enoshima?
05-25-2012, 02:08 PM
Yui getting some nice fishing gear.
It wasn't cheap either..
Even Yamada got into fishing.
Guess it's pretty contagious since everyone got hooked so easily.
Looks like Haru was feeling a bit guilty about what happened last time.
Group fishing trip was nice ^^
05-26-2012, 01:25 PM
- Will the real things finally be told between father and son?
- How could he do that to Sakura-chan?
- Sakura-chan is missing?
Oh well, they don’t give any explanation in this episode…and had even something….we now want to know what happened to Sakura-chan.
05-31-2012, 02:23 PM
Well there's all our explanations for the series. I'm glad to finally have them, although they seemed a little overwhelming the way they all just poured out like that after keeping such a tight lip on anything related to that. Along with happily being a member of our four protagonists, Akira has accepted that Haru is a good guy, and tries to tell his superiors this, but they're not having any of that, and so they deploy a massive force against Haru. And when Akira tries to relent, they wonder if he really is the same guy, as he shouldn't have been enjoying himself with the alien he was there to watch, and his entire organization turns on him. After such a peaceful scene with the four of them talking about how they wished things could stay just like that forever, I figured there would be some huge event to destroy the peace by the end of the episode, and that's certainly what happened. Enoshima is going to be an even more eventful place for the next few episodes.
06-01-2012, 04:57 PM
Sakura missing, but got found rather quick.
Akira's little talk with the "aliens" was interesting.
Interesting how they get along well considering the circumstances.
Natsuki got them all into fishing and they love it too ^^
Looks like they only needed one thing in common to overcome all their differences.
I have a feeling that the scene with Haru and Grandma (actually all of the scenes with her) with her telling him to be sure to say goodbye if he leaves, is a foretelling that she won't be around till the end of the show. Her actions seem to be to get Yuki out of his shell so he has some friends to support him when she is gone and she knows it will be soon.
Some how the higher ups in DUCK don't give me a lot of confidence. I haven't seen such a sleazy group of decadent leaders in awhile.
Maybe Natsuki's dad's whitebait ice cream will be the key to capturing JF1.;)
06-02-2012, 01:34 PM
- Where is Sakura-chan?
- There she is! ^__^
- So that’s what they want to catch and bring back home…
- Well, it’s nice to see Yuki speak to his grandmother and says how he feels about not having his parents and finishes it by “I love you, Grandma.” Nice scene.
- Haru is fishing again.
- Well, Akira decided that Haru is not dangerous…but Duck organization doesn’t think the same…
- Danger is yet to come…
Will see what will happen next episode, it was good to have some explanations.
06-07-2012, 03:27 PM
Wtf? A whole army of duck people ^^"
Looks like Haru did something wrong again.
Even Akira didn't like what his superiors were doing.
The truth has finally come out.
After loosing Koko, Haru kinda lost it.
06-07-2012, 07:02 PM
And there's our eventfulness. I definitely expected it to be more eventful than anything up to this point, but that whole action scene was quite spectacular. It may be because this show is mostly about fishing, something that seems like one of the most calm things you can do to me, that when it goes into the big alien stuff, it seems that much crazier. It set up the next episode very well, too.
06-09-2012, 01:24 PM
- Well…this episode is starting way crazier than the previous ones that for sure.
- Is Haru really going without saying good bye?
- Koko….what happened to her?
- Haru wants everyone to leave… and wants the town for himself. There must be a reason behind it.
Well, this sure was a crazy episode. I want to know what will happen next.
Wtf? A whole army of duck people ^^"
And why does a whole army of duck people have rabbit ears?
Damn I was sure Grandma was dead there when Yuki saw her on the floor.
06-14-2012, 03:14 PM
Haru in hiding, Duck forces in pursuit, Akira indecisive, storm coming.
Looks like Haru is their only chance against the storm.
Yuki came back despite the water control ^^
I was glad Akira decided to help his new friends.
06-14-2012, 03:21 PM
Surprisingly epic setup for the final episode. I've never been sure about how I feel about this show, but if this final episode can pull it off like it looks like it wants to, it could be quite a strong finish after all.
06-16-2012, 01:26 PM
- Koko “MAY” not be able to come back… So there is still hope? As small as it is…
Damn…talk about a way to finish this episode… I sure want to know what happen next…
06-21-2012, 02:11 PM
The whole crew determined to prevent further disaster and save Haru.
Yamada forced to choose sides... not a pretty sight.
It was nice seeing them all so determined.
Their last fishing trip sure was an exciting one!
06-21-2012, 06:12 PM
Oh. Not the last episode. Cool. I was wondering how they were going to wrap it up in so little time. So I guess both the noitaminA shows this season get 12 episodes. That's unusual.
06-21-2012, 09:36 PM
Everything is set for the final episode, because episode 11 was not the final one! I wonder how they will finish it.
06-21-2012, 09:37 PM
So I guess both the noitaminA shows this season get 12 episodes. That's unusual.
It would be nice for it to happen more often in the future.
06-28-2012, 02:54 PM
Flashbacks to the fun days with Haru were nice.
They were just the motivation Yuki needed.
Fishing for that dragon was certainly the event of a lifetime.
Goodbye time was pretty cheerfull, just like Haru always was!
And life went on.... and Urara came back!!! ^-^
Nice final episode!
06-28-2012, 06:00 PM
Most exciting fishing ever. It's tradition for one noitaminA show to be much better than the other, and this is clearly the latter this season. But it was still plenty of fun. And at times, the animation was some of the best this season, which was very nice. Actually, if I fished and didn't care about music or Watanabe or Kanno, I think this could be on par with Kids on the Slope for me. So maybe I shouldn't be so quick to say that. Overall, both shows were good but not to the level that I'd add them to my top anime list, which I've got 30-something of at this point. An anime-watching friend has been fishing with his brother this summer, so I told him he definitely has to watch this.
Series Grade: C+
06-30-2012, 01:33 PM
Well, it was a nice final episode. The series was alright good enough to be finish on CR but nothing more than that.
