Fate/Unlimited Codes is going off the US store on June 12 (http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2012/06/03-1/fateunlimited-codes-to-be-removed-from-playstation-network-this-month) and as such is having a $9.99 sale until then.

My question is how worthwhile is the game? Basically is the story any good and how are the mechanics? I have a decent collection of fighting games but many of them get abandoned so any insight from those who have played it would be most welcome.

I haven't gotten around to playing the game yet (and certainly won't be getting to it anytime soon), so I can't say too much about it.

But its really not a fighting game, genre-wise. I mean, yeah, you fight one-on-one duels, but it plays nothing like Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, etc. I believe it uses a turn-based RPG battle system. There's some sort of paper-rock-scissor's mechanic and winning depends heavily on learning about your opponent so that you know when to use which attacks. Or least that's my understanding of it.

Are we talking about the same game? What you are describing sounds more like Fate/Extra which was released by Aksys than the game footage I've seen of Unlimited Codes which is available as a download only.

But if we are talking the same game then it is an automatic pass. Had my fill of the rock-paper mechanic on my /Extra play through.

Ah, no, I totally forgot that there was another Fate/PSP Game. I was mixing it up with Fate/Extra. I have no idea what Unlimited Codes is like, I basically wiped it from memory when it was revealed that it would be download only and never saw much about it outside of that anyway.

I've played both the PS2 and PSP port of the game and I can say the game is a lot of fun. Easy for beginners to pick up but takes a bit to master. The story is semi-existence, as it takes bits from the Fate/Stay Night and Fate/hollow ataraxia storyline depending on the character you pick. Funny enough, there is no story for Zero Lancer.

The button layout is Weak, Medium, Strong and a Counter Button. Normally the moves are inputed by you typical CF CB moves, however the PSP version simplyfied it to simple taps on the d-pad. This is one thing I didn't like about the port (and the frame rate issues). Aside from that, the game play is fast and furious, closer to that of an Arc Sys game than a Capcom game. Some of the Supers and Grail Supers are created very faithfully, and a few require special conditions to pull it off.
