Viz to Launch 24-Hour Anime Service on Major Game Console
posted on 2012-06-27 15:00 EDT

'Neon Alley' to show uncut, dubbed premieres of Tiger & Bunny (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=12198), Inuyasha: The Final Act (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10970), Lagrange - The Flower of Rin-ne (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=13290)

Viz Media (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=4552) is announcing (http://www.neonalley.com/) on Wednesday that it will launch (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/press-release/2012-06-27/viz-media-unveils-neon-alley) Neon Alley, a 24-hour anime service on a major game console to be revealed later. The service will debut this fall and will be available in the United States and Canada.

The service will show anime uncut, dubbed in English, and in HD when available. It will host the English dub (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/lexicon.php?id=98) premieres of Tiger & Bunny (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=12198), Inuyasha: The Final Act (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10970), Zetman (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=13736), Lagrange - The Flower of Rin-ne (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=13290), and new episodes of Naruto Shippūden (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7293). It will also show films such as the Berserk (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=328): The Golden Age Arc film trilogy. The service will also run original content with news and behind-the-scenes information on anime and manga.

Neon Alley is a subscription-based service that will cost US$6.99 per month. According to Viz's press release, it will have "limited commercial advertising."

ANN interviewed Brian Ige (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=106016), Viz Media Vice President of Animation, about the new service:

ANN: So how did the idea for a 24-hour channel start?

Brian Ige: Our top series have millions of weekly viewers, but there's not a lot of opportunities to highlight new series on traditional TV or cable networks. There's also not enough broadcast outlets available to support the amount of high-quality anime coming over from Japan. We wanted to create a destination for fans to explore & discover new anime titles. With Neon Alley, fans will be able to watch their favorite series next to cutting-edge series they didn't even know they were missing.

What made the channel a better choice than expanding VIZ Anime's streaming services online?

Neon Alley and VIZ Anime are two separate but complementary ways to watch anime, speaking to different audiences.

Neon Alley will feature uncut dubbed content, and because of the high amount of crossover between gamers and anime fans, will draw not only fans who enjoy dubbed content, but a wider and more casual anime-viewing audience. With Neon Alley on the game console, fans will also be able to get the best viewing experience, straight to their TV.

VIZ Anime features subtitled video-on-demand content, catering to anime fans who want their favorite shows simulcast (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/lexicon.php?id=121) straight from Japan.

Are you hoping to attract a more casual viewing audience for this? Do you think the need for a subscription might hamper that?

Neon Alley will be a great way for casual viewers to explore a wide variety of anime, from blockbusters Naruto Shippūden, Inuyasha: The Final Act and Death Note (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6592), to new titles like Tiger & Bunny, Zetman, and the Berserk movie trilogy.

Similar to Hulu (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=6901) Plus, we blend a subscription and advertising model to keep the cost low and bring the best uncut, English-dubbed content to fans, and in HD when available. Please register on NeonAlley.com for news & updates on special introductory offers!

It appears as though you're debuting some titles on the service; particularly Berserk. Is the intention for Viz Media to debut new anime first on the channel?

We evaluate new content on a case-by-case basis. In the case of Berserk, we felt that this movie trilogy would appeal to a wide audience. We're excited to debut the first Berserk movie on Neon Alley later this year!

Any plans to expand to other set-top media streaming devices such as Boxee or Roku?

We may consider expansion to other platforms in the future.

Will the content be available on demand, or will people have to tune in at a specific time to catch the shows they want?

Neon Alley will be a live feed of shows that we curate based on the day & time. When you watch Neon Alley, it'll be like watching your favorite TV channel. Our on-screen Electronic Programming Guide will also enhance the TV viewing experience, and we're continuing to explore ways to bring the best possible experience to subscribers.

The press release mentions "the first season of Neon Alley." What does that entail exactly? Will you run all-original programming for a set time and then switch to reruns, ala a standard cable channel?

Neon Alley's programming will evolve to keep it fresh and interesting for our audience. There will be new content each week, and throughout the season you can expect event programming, specials, premieres and more. Shows will repeat, so if you didn't catch the premiere, you'll have an opportunity to view your favorite anime at a later time!

How'd you come up with the name Neon Alley?

We had a lot of fun coming up with the name. “Neon” suggests “fun” and “excitement,” while “alley” hints at “dark” and “mysterious.” We felt this really describes anime very well, conjuring up images of an exciting, yet unknown place!

So Blue Exorcist is listed. Could it mean that the series will get dubbed? If true, I wonder how that arrangement will work with Aniplex of America.

They'll probably make some sort of post about it on their Facebook page today.

Consider my interest piqued. If Funimation is willing to partner with them for content then this might actually turn out to be a pretty good service. They've got their own back catalog to pick from plus partnering with Aniplex USA and Funimation. I'm kind of hopeful that this is profitable for everyone involved and that we see more content from their partners. Maybe they can even entice Sentai into licensing some content to them...

Sadly, Sentai probably won't bite. They have their own Anime Network to air their content and they're stubbornly adamant about propping it up.

True. I guess I'm hopeful that they'll take a page out of Funimation's book. Funi's got their own channel and subscription model as well, but I guess they realized it's better to get their titles out there (at least OP) as opposed to only sticking with their services.

Then again, this could be a one time deal and we might not see any more Funimation titles on the service. I'd like to be optimistic though :)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VIZ MEDIA BRINGS THE HIGH SEAS ANIME PIRATE
ADVENTURE ONE PIECE TO NEON ALLEY THIS FALL

ONE PIECE Licensor Toei Animation Will Be Content Partner For
New Console-Based 24-Hour Anime Channel Launching On PS3
And Playstation Network

San Francisco, CA, August 21, 2012 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), the largest publisher, distributor and licensor of manga and anime in North America, continues the digital anime convergence as it announces that Toei Animation, with FUNimation® Entertainment acting as the agent, has licensed the celebrated pirate anime action/adventure series, ONE PIECE, for broadcast on Neon Alley, the new 24-hour anime channel VIZ Media launching this Fall exclusively to the Playstation Network and the PS3 game console. Episodes to air on Neon Alley will be presented
uncut and with dubbed English dialogue.

Neon Alley, featuring the world’s best anime titles all dubbed and uncut in English and presented in HD (when available), is the first platform designed to be studio agnostic, with a diverse array of titles from other leading anime producers and distributors. Programming will include weekly exclusive premieres of hit titles fans love, alongside a mix of new, cutting edge titles they didn’t know they were missing. Neon Alley will be a subscription-based service, subsidized with limited commercial advertising to keep the launch price to consumers at a low $6.99 per month.

“We’re excited to partner with Toei and FUNimation to bring the smash hit ONE PIECE to fans across North America on Neon Alley,” says Brian Ige, Vice President, Animation. “Fans should stay tuned for the Neon Alley launch date and programming details, and prepare to set sail with Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat pirates this Fall!”

ONE PIECE is based on a massively popular manga (graphic novel) series created by Eiichiro Oda, that is also published in North America by VIZ Media (rated ‘T’ for Teens). In the venerable anime adventure, Monkey D. Luffy refuses to let anyone or anything stand in the way of his quest to become king of all pirates. With a course charted for the treacherous waters of the Grand Line, this is one captain who'll never drop anchor until he's claimed the greatest treasure on Earth – the Legendary One Piece!

And Toei might have told them to do it. The presser is explicit that Funimation is acting as an agent for Toei. You'd have to be in the meeting to know for sure whether Funimation asked Toei if they could or Toei asked Funimation if they would.

Yeah, the press release makes me think Viz went straight to Toei instead of to Funimation. If I had to guess, I would say Funimation agreed so as to not sour their relationship with Toei.

I see this more as Viz repaying the favor of airing their properties on the FUNimation Channel. One Piece is probably one of FUNimation's biggest ongoing properties, so getting it back on TV in any form would not be something FUNimation would be reasonably upset about, even if they weren't at the bargaining table (which I think they were there in some form.)

This is looking way too epic. But I really don't think I can justify paying for a 24/7 service when I'll probably only be able to catch bits and pieces here and there, and since it's not on demand, I probably won't be able to just see all the stuff I care about. I really cannot believe that they already have Zetman dubbed.

I really wish this announcement was that it would be available in ANY form but Neon Alley. Streaming? Great. Physical release? Greater. Blu-ray? Best news possible. But I just can't bring myself to buy a subscription to a linear service when I can't even guarantee I'll catch the stuff I want. And with the state of Blue Exorcist, who knows if or when we'll ever get a physical release?

Ironically, I finished Aniplex's sub-only $700 set of releases THREE DAYS AGO, but with no physical release of this known yet, I don't exactly regret my purchase more than I may have already.

I shared my (extensive) thoughts on the dub announcement in the other thread.

I knew that Fate/Zero would be getting a dub, but what I was not expecting was to have a complete recasting. And while I welcome the addition to Neon Alley, as long as it is a subscription TV channel with no DVR feature I probably won't be able to catch it until it gets released. I'm hoping for a reasonably priced BD release when it is ready to come out.

Whoa, Viz has brought everyone together for Neon Alley. I never expected that to happen. I'm much more confident about subscribing to it tomorrow. I don't yet see anyone but Viz and Aniplex premiering dubs on there, but again, this is a surprise as well, and I wouldn't have expected Aniplex to do so either, so here's hoping for things to continue moving in this positive direction.
