カンピオーネ!
A harem love comedy plus magic battles. Kusanagi Godo is a 16-year-old high school boy, who once killed the god "Verethragna" and acquired the title of "Campione (god killer)" when he was 15. Erica Brandelli is a 16-year-old Italian girl, who is a "Great Knight" of the magic society "Bronze Black Cross" and had fought together with Godo to defeat Verethragna. Godo doesn't like fighting but his title of "Campione" makes him get involved in battles against other Campiones and uncontrollable gods.

Pre-air...decided to check it out since it's one of the summer shows that interested me - mainly, the blonde female caught my eye.
Modern world mixed with magic and rampaging gods. I like the explanation given regarding natural diasters. And, they are using names of real gods from mythology - so that'll be a pretty cool thing to look into.
Goudou Kusanagi (they are using western name order in the show) is our MC and is quickly drawn into the mess. He seems like a good guy and not a milquetoast male lead as he puts himself in danger and uses the power of the tablet he possesses. The episode explains how he receives his god killing power.
Erica Blandelli is our blonde female lead we meet who's some knight of sorts. I like her dress (at least she changes into clothing that makes sense for fighting) and her facial expressions are really cute. She seems little tsun towards Goudou, too. But, she's fights well and is pretty strong. I can see the two make a good duo in battle.
Overall, the episode was enjoyable - there was some action (I hope it get's better later on) and the comedy was good (Erica and the maid getting drunk was a cute scene). I wonder if the show will fall into harem cliches, though (the bedroom scene wasn't terrible though, could have been worse).

There wasn't much originality to be had here, but I found it to be entertaining, so I'll stick with it. It may be built from old tropes, but none of it seems as distractingly cliche as it could have been so far. I wouldn't doubt it going downhill at any point, but it's not a bad start.

- So Godou made the trek to Italy to return a stone tablet to some old lady.
- Right away, an ojou-sama shows up demanding the stone table.
- And here comes a renegade god about to cause destruction.
- Time for knight-mode Erica to stop this god.
- While running away, Godou runs into the Victor.
- Looks like some white horse chased away the god apparently.
- Bad idea taking the train, and even worse idea to ride in a car driven by Arianna. At least he escapes.
- What's this? A talking black cat? And that attractive lady is the old witch Lucrezia Zora?
- Isn't Erica underaged? And what's up with them locked together in a room?
- Another God attacks, this time bringing in the rain.
- And challenging him is that Victor, Verethragna. Looks like he is there just to prove that he is the strongest.
- For his first time, Godou sure did well negotiating with the God.
- Time for a battle between Melqart and Verethragna, and his golden sword.
- For the win, stealing the golden sword with the tablet.
- And a kiss for the new victor.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable first episode. It's hardly original, but it made for a nice episode to watch to start off things.

We are in Italy, so I'm not entirely surprised Erica is getting drunk off wine.
And, regarding being locked in room - it was all Lucretia's plan to get them together.

A few cute moments, but otherwise quite generic. I'll give it another episode or two to see if it's more than just another magic, fighting anime...

Another generic action fantasy show starring Youko Hikasa. Frankly, its a mess. The episode barely even made sense. I think they tried to cram the entire first light novel into one episode. It's a shame, because that ending was actually pretty nice despite that and it felt like it would have been really damn good if the show had about three episodes to build everything up properly. And its still fucking gold compared to Hagure Yuusha.
At least Erica has something resembling a personality and might actually amount to something in the show other than just showing us her tits five times an episode. And drunk Erica was pretty amusing. Naturally, action-aimed-at-boys rules requires the bland self-insert lead to rescue her at some point, but that's an extremely mild irritation compared to some of the other horrible things I've had to put up with this season.
I'll watch this at least a little bit more just for Erica. I like her quite a bit. Arianna was was fun too (especially when she was drunk), so I'm hoping she gets some decent screentime later on. Hopefully the show will also improve and rise to decency at some point. Maybe after rushing to this part it will slow down and this could easily get better just from half-decent pacing instead of what we got here.

Eh, this felt really generic, and it's not a genre where I'm okay with that. Erica was alright, I guess, and the scene with her and Arianna getting drunk was pretty good, but Godou vaguely gets on my nerves and the whole premise was rather yawn-inducing. Don't think I'll be watching any more.

Supposedly the first novel was crammed into the first episode according to some people over at ANN (you probably read the same thing too). I didn't get the feeling like the episode was super rushed, but it was moving at a fast clip to establish how the MC got his power and the whole gods thing. I was also paying more attention to Erica than anything else in the episode.

No, I generally try to avoid reading anything about shows ahead of time. Makes reading the preview thread a little tricky when I'm not completely up to date, as tends to happen when ~4 shows come out at about the same time. I saw someone say something along the lines of "Welp, time to go watch it to see how badly they bastardized the novels" but I didn't see what he was responding to or anything about the pacing mentioned. I haven't read the thread at all, but I should probably check it out, along with the threads for a few other shows. I won't follow any of them regularly, but I am curious how certain shows were received.
Anyway, that was entirely speculation based on my own viewing and reaction to it.
I didn't get the feeling like the episode was super rushed, but it was moving at a fast clip to establish how the MC got his power and the whole gods thing.
Yes, the reason was clearly because they wanted to end at that point and get "the hook" into the first episode. This is why I always hated the idea that you needed to have "the hook" in your first episode or two. And hell, the episode even flat out said he was going to become a "King of the World" (which pretty heavily implies "god") very early on. That would have been a perfectly good hook. Even two episodes probably would have been sufficient for everything to unfold more naturally and get enough characterization and relationship development in there. As it stands, while end scene managed to be pretty impressive despite the major problems, it ultimately feels like it all happened purely because it was pre-ordained by the plot and the almost total lack of development between Erica and whatshisname just gimps the scene in general.
I was also paying more attention to Erica than anything else in the episode.
As anyone in their right mind should be.

I thought that something was up when things got into the nitty-gritty in the first minute of the show. While most shows that I watched take time to establish things before getting serious like that. And it turns out that is what it is.

Kusanagi Godou seems like a typical forced-to-be-a-hero type.

The comedy parts were fun to watch as well as the action scenes.

Episode 1:
Pros:
- Erica and Arianna are fun drunks.
- Erica's boobs.
- Actually Erica's everything.
- No characters are particularly annoying.
Cons:
- That godawful narrator.
- I have pretty minimal interest in anything that happened.
- I expect male protag will be fighting all the battles by episode 3. Wait, make that 2. Erica has already been reduced to support.
Probably won't get back to this.

- Back in Japan, something snuck into Godou's bed.
- Godou's sister has quite the temper, seeing how Erica has become too close.
- Erica has transferred, and has declared her love for Godou.
- Erica, come outside for a minute. Wait a minute, why is Mariya here?
- So Mariya is a miko and a popular student.
- Somehow, Godou is back in Italy.
- Time to test out Godou's Campione powers, against Erica steel lion.
- The power of the boar sure looks powerful. It bulldozed the Coliseum.
- So the powers can only be used once per day.
- Looks like Liliana is watching him and ready to strike.
After a solid first episode, this show looks like it is falling back to earth with all that typical harem stuff. Shizuka is sure upset about Erica, while it looks like Mariya is starting to develop something for Godou (and probably would not have noticed him if he were not a Campione). At least for a harem, this series is showing some promise with the fights against gods and all that other stuff going on. I'll give it a couple more episodes before making my decision.

Hmmmm, I have mixed feelings on where they went with Erica in this episode. I was highly annoyed that she just started throwing herself at Godou for the first half of the episode. They showed that the her that I liked so much in the first episode is still there though, so the stuff at the end largely mitigates it.
Yay of Hanazawa Kana but Yuri's rather bland so far. Need to see more of Liliana before I can evaluate her.
The show is still very mediocre, but I'll watch more. It's at least somewhat enjoyable.

I still really like Erica, but, yea, the 180 in personality in the beginning was definitely weird (I did find it cute). Its like we missed something between becoming a god-killer and going back to Japan. I thought the same thing as the dude at the temple thinking she was out to get something. At least the end ties it up though.
The rest of the episode is we meet girls who will join the harem and Godou uses his powers and get an explanation of them. Yea...like episode 1, I was paying more attention to Erica than anything else that happened.
So, ill continue watching the show.

I'm kind of disappointed in myself for liking this show so much. Still, I feel like it's really going in the right direction considering how much of a standard harem show it could easily be at any time. There's hardly any of that, with most of the content being plot-driven, with lots of nice action scenes, and not much in the way of fanservice. Obviously the kissing plot element is there for the harem/fanservice aspect, but even with the way they're going about it, it doesn't seem too bad to me.

Guess it was because she's a beautiful female foreigner ^^
She's also very clingy... which is making Mariya kinda jealous.
Kusanagi is pretty laid back for his part.
He's still not grasping the importance of his role.

- Erica sure has a lot of fans. Too bad for them Erica is in love with Godou only.
- So Yuri has something to tell Godou on the rooftop.
- Now Yuri has the medallion.
- Athena has arrived, and wants that medallion. But Godou does not have it.
- In the meantime, Yuri is trying to seal it.
- Erica is trapped, and sees Athena kissing Godou.
- Now Erica fights with a spear. To trap Athena, that is.
- Liliana arrives, but is no help.
- And Godou has awaken with Erica.
- Now, Erica kisses Godou. But it's to share information.
- The sky is turning pitch black, courtesy of Athena.
So far, this show has been pretty enjoyable considering what kind of show it is supposed to be. Things have gotten really dire now that Athena is after the power of the snake. This sets up things pretty nicely for the next episode when Godou is trying to stop Athena.

- It's pitch black all over the city.
- Arianna is pretty jealous. Not in the car, Erica.
- So Yuri failed to seal the medallion and now Athena has it.
- She called, and he responded.
- Info dump time, this time transferred through a kiss and her history spoken by Godou during battle.
- Godou uses the sword to turn Athena's snakes into stone.
- Godou was on a tear, but now his power is used up. What now?
- Erica to the rescue, and the spear puts a hole in Athena.
- Athena is still alive, but powerless. Godou just lets her scram.
- So Erica set this up to have Athena attack in Japan so that the other Campiones could not interfere.
Pretty good episode here, and I have a feeling we will be seeing Athena again. For a show that is set up as a harem, there is a lot of great stuff going on that's making this show enjoyable. I am now putting this show on my watching list.

Athena really was serious about her quest, but so was Mariya.
Kusanagi & Erica thing keeps stretching through this episode as well..
Isn't it about time to accept her or reject her?
Liliana & Mariya together were no match for Athena.
After Kusanagi joined the fight against the fully loaded Athena things became interesting.
First he gave her lecture about her origins and then they fought with Greek mythology and some actual weapons.
What can I say... she went down, but that was expected.

- Enter Hikari Mariya, and a supersized lunch
- Yuri is up in arms with Erica hanging on him.
- So Godou was once a catcher and broke his shoulder and gave up baseball.
- Erica rubbed it into Yuri. And a challenge is issued.
- Yuri sure swings slow and late, and Godou takes one in the groin.
- Yuri has no cell phone, so she needs to get one.
- Liliana is watching.
- A fellow Campione calls. It's Salvatore to tell Godou that Voban has arrived.
- And Liliana kidnaps Yuri, bringing her to Voban.
So in this episode, it is all about Yuri, and while it feels like a typical episode in a harem, it was a pretty decent one. Now, things are setting up for Godou to battle Voban and it's back to battles once again after an episode for things to kick back. We will soon get more Liliana since she is working for Voban.

Lot's of Yuri in this episode. She's completely lacking in physical stamina, totally out of touch with modern life, passive in general, gets nervous dealing with sales clerks.... Yuri clearly aimed at the Pure Innocent Waifu That Needs To Be Protected demographic. She's cute and amusing at times, and I enjoyed her in the bento scene on the roof and the cell phone stuff, particularly the infrared data transfer, but she's not exactly my type.
Liliana still didn't do much, except show up occasionally be kinda mysterious, until the end when she kidnapped Yuri. But she's obviously a major character in this arc, so she should play a major role going forward.
Also, Erica gave her approval for Godou to engage in bigamy. Contrary to her words, I'm sure she'll allow Liliana and the other girl later.
With that said, its like this season is trying to destroy my tolerance for every aspect of the typical male lead and the various problems associated with them. I love Erica but god, she desperately needs a non-generic guy with an actual personality rather than someone who just does the typical "run away screaming" thing in the most boring way possible.

What's the deal with male leads being deathly afraid of seeing a girl's lingerie or naked body when the girl doesn't mind at all. Nice to know Erica sleeps in the nude - I forget if the previous episodes show us that (you can see how much I really care about this show).

- So Yuri can't get Voban's fanservicey outfit on.
- You rather die than to have your powers used to serve Voban. A bold move, but he can control zombies, so that isn't an option.
- Turn emeth to meth, and you slay a golem.
- So Voban would rather play games than to do things the typical bad guy way.
- And this battle has turned into a game of hide and seek.
- The werewolves are now coming. Arianna, it's time you left.
- The fight is on. It's a horse against the werewolf, and the werewolf wins.

There's the epic clashing of godly powers I've been waiting for. Voban just keeps pulling something new out, so Godou has to keep matching him. And to do that, he not only has to recruit Liliana, adding to his harem, but also go the next step with his last harem member. Of course, the kissing is a little different than when it's coming from Erica. As a result, Godou gets to show off some shiny new epic powers and continue to overpower Voban. Daybreak comes and Voban gives him the victory before anything more can happen. Ugh. I was pretty happy with the episode for the most part, but I really didn't want to have to see him yet again.

- Gotta inject the magic directly.
- Erica and Lilly are fighting each other. Seems like they have a long history with each other.
- So Lilly served Voban unaware of his tyrannical schemes. Now she serves Godou.
- Now, a kiss with Erica to exchange knowledge.
- Voban gets pierced by a bazillion golden swords, and not one scratch.
- And now, Yuri kisses to exchange knowledge. Whoops, that didn't work.
- C'mon, unite those hearts. Now, it finally works.
- And Godou can use lightning. Unleash the goat.
- Voban is still standing, but now the zombies are freed, and it's daybreak.
- And it's a kiss by Erica, and Tokyo Tower falls down.
After the last two episodes were lacking, this one is quite amusing to watch the battle unfold. Yuri was acting all cute with her kiss in a failed attempt to exchange knowledge. Looks like the next episode will be a beach episode. While this show has been what I expect out of a harem, it's more entertaining to watch than a good number of them.

- And Godou escapes... to the girls hot springs. He couldn't go anywhere else.
- Time for Godou to get away from the girls.
- Athena is back, this time calling for Godou to fight a God.
- Salvatore uses his sword to break a seal, even though Lilly said it's impossible.
- The dragon slayer Perseus arrives on a quest to slay the dragon that is the foundation of the land.
- In comes Athena to absorb the dragon, and Godou to fight Perseus.
- Lilly carries Godou away to buy some time.
- You gotta kiss or else Godou will be powerless.

Harems usually have a beach episode, and while this episode had a good amount of fanservice, at least it lasted less than a half of an episode. It started out as being another terrible episode that is common in harem, but the battle with Perseus was really something as now, Godou is knocking on the door of death here. This episode was mostly pointless I would say. It's just to get some fanservice out of Liliana. But of course, Athena making the negotiations about how to beat Perseus was just about the only nice thing about this episode, and I liked the way Pandora was speaking to Godou about what just happened.

- Time for the fight to move to the big stage, in front of many spectators.
- So what will it be? Kiss Liliana or get crushed by Perseus? Looks like Godou has chosen to get crushed.
- Just lifiting up pillars and throwing them at Perseus. No elegance at all.
- Not good. Verethragna's powers are sealed, and Godou takes an arrow. To the wrist this time.
- Now they finally kiss. Godou, it's time to beat that hero wannabe.
- So Perseus is actually Mithra, the former master of Verethragna. That explains how he can seal his powers.
- The bow is broken, but Perseus still has the sword. And Lilly is mind-controlled.
- Call her name, and just before she launches arrows at him. Lilly is back.
- Perseus gets a homing arrow pinning him on a pillar, and the boar is unleashed.
- Time for another kiss. No, it's Athena who kisses him this time.
- Perseus is still standing. But not for long, not when Athena is out for blood.
- Erica sure does not take everything Lilly does very well.
Pretty solid episode here as the battle was nice, and Lilly being so psyched out about all that kissing was cute to watch. Next time, it looks like the last member of Godou's harem appears, and that would be Ena Seishuin. And then there is that Chinese girl from the opening that I think will appear in the next episode as well.

This episode represented the epic mythology-based battle side of the series much more than the generic harem side, which I am happy about. The end did still delve into that territory, but I can't expect too much of this series. They definitely covered Liliana's route well, since the other girls hardly even existed. I guess they were making up for doing nothing with her character for the beginning. There's one more main harem member to be introduced.

Godou vs Perseus.
Liliana teaching him... she sure made a big deal of a simple kiss.
I mean it was to help him out...
It was an interesting battle between those two.
In reality, they sure talked a lot during the battle..
Seems like Athena really likes Godou ^^

Godou sure is enjoying lots of girl attention.
Now even a new one appeared - Ena.
Looks like most of the girls have one-sided relationships with him.
Some of them are not too happy about being just friends.
Erica & Godou on a date ^^
That was really nice to watch.
Erica vs Ena! A chick fight! LOL
There is some serious competition for him.

Harem complete. And we're almost done. I guess the last 2 episodes will finish up the situation the girls and Godou are in, and tie it into whatever Athena's issue is.

- Gotta make Yuri the #1 girl in Godou's harem, and Ena will help out.
- Time for a meeting with the tea club, with Ena.
- Lilly doesn't take being the 2nd best girl in the harem too well.
- Going home with Shizuka.
- Athena is fighting something.
- It's Erica and Godou on a date.
- And they end up on the spot where Godou defeated Athena.
- Ena challenges Erica to a duel. There's something ominous about Ena's katana.
- Godou goes down into a portal, with Erica following him in.
- Athena comes crashing down into the house.
So with this episode, the last member of the harem appears, and this episode felt more of the same for the first 15 minutes or so of this episode, and now Godou is in deep trouble now that he has disappeared. And then there was something that Athena was fighting that caused her to crash into Godou's house. Two more episodes to go.

That was the most ridiculously sexual kissing scene I've ever seen. Or maybe not. If not, I don't want to remember what was.

Godou ended up in a really strange place.
The whole thing was unusual, especially that Susano guy.
Well, at least Godou learned a few useful things.
Interesting how now even Athena has started showing her feelings.
It's was nice for a change that Godou saved Erica.
Really good episode!

- Just where did Godou go to now? There's a strange house there.
- It's a god, well a retired one that is who is Ena's guardian.
- Godou wants to go to Erica, and demands it with the gold sword.
- Meanwhile, Ena's sword has possessed her.
- It's now the golden sword vs. the demon sword.
- Erica on the verge of death, bad. Not knowing your destination, even worse.
- And they end up on the beach. Engaged in a kiss, of the sexual variety enhanced by Verethragna.
- That was a painful kiss, but Erica is back and fighting again.
- While Erica fights that monster, it's Godou to rescue a now-naked Ena.
- A no-longer-naked Ena is now part of Godou's harem with a kiss.
- Athena is out for revenge. Wait, that's a different Athena.
That was quite an intense episode there with Ena being possessed, Godou having his sexual moment with Erica, and Ena becoming the last member of Godou's harem. That moment where Godou was kissing Erica felt like a scene from a hentai (minus the getting undressed part, of course). And then seeing Athena and Shizuka interact like that was very nice. One more episode to go with the battle against Metis, a.k.a. Athena #2, and I am thinking that a second season could be coming since there are supposed to be seven Campiones, but we only see three of them.

- Metis is on the attack, and is after Athena.
- The harem stalls Metis, while Godou and Athena head to Mt. Fuji.
- So Athena has been stripped of her memories. She doesn't know what a god is.
- After some time passed, Godou has recharged and is ready to fight Metis.
- None of Godou's powers are working.
- Athena takes the blow, and Godou unleashes his most powerful attack. But not a scratch.
- Not good, Athena was absorbed, and now Metis is in her true form.
- The harem comes to the rescue. First kisses by Yuri and Ena to get him back on his feet.
- And now, kisses by Liliana and Erica to transform the swords into something more powerful.
- Athena is separated, and now, it's her turn to kiss Godou.
- With the super-powered scythe, that's the end of Metis. And it's time for Athena to depart as well.
- The darkness has lifted, and it looks like there is another Campione from America. Maybe Egypt and France, too.
- Shizuka sure is up in arms about the harem coming over for breakfast.
And so, this series comes to an end with a nice episode. The fight was great, and seeing Athena becoming a temporary member of Godou's harem was great as well. Then it's back to reality once the battle ends.
Overall, while this show was enjoyable, it fell into the typical traps of harem anime. The battles are what make this show what it is, and mixing haremesque aspects into this action-packed show was nicely done. It's a great stopping point, as there is enough material for a second season since only three of the seven Campiones appeared in this show, and the scenes showing the darkness lifted could hint at another season where the rest of the Campiones are introduced. The show falls flat during the moments outside of battle, but inside battle is why I watched this show as it was mostly focused on that and not a whole lot of time was spent in those types of settings where it's all about the harem. After a good, albeit rushed, first episode, that really got me interested in watching.

More action, not so much "action", compared to the previous episode. That's fine with me; the kiss-sex scene was kind of comical but made me wonder why I was watching this show. I have always liked the epic scale of the action, and of course the finale is only going to go all out with that. And then a little more standard harem fare to wrap it up.
Whatever. It wasn't the worst of its kind, so I was alright with watching it for a cour. If it gets a good enough release, I may even buy it.
Series Grade: C

Athena's evil twin Metis makes an appearance.
Seems like our Athena is just an ordinary girl now..
It's kinda sad too..
Godou vs Metis!
Now that was a good fight.
The merging of Athena & Metis was not a good thing.
Godou really became strong and is not a wuss anymore.
Pretty good final episode.
