And so, it all begins with an ordinary guy being asked to save the world by someone who is turning people into statues and causing worldwide disasters. Hakaze is marooned in a barrel on an island thanks to Samon and is a magic user who can't use magic while cast away, but she gets her message to Mahiro through a bottle. Aiwa is killed, and Mahiro is determined to find her killer (who I think is Samon, or at least he is somehow involved) while gaining special powers. Now, Yoshino is in it as well. And of course, the first sign of trouble appeared when Eva arrived trying to shoot Yoshino.
This episode does a nice job in setting up the story, and that there is someone out on a conquest to destroy the world or something. Seems like this show is off to a good start. Even though it's a title from a shounen manga, it definitely feels like the creator had females in mind with the bishounen

A really great first episode, the best of the season so far for me. I was hoping for a lot considering some of the companies and staff behind it, but also prepared for disappointment. Surprisingly, it actually impressed me more than I had ever expected it to.

Well, that was okay I guess. Kind of a mess, but the show has some potential.
Unfortunately, the two characters I care about probably aren't going to get enough attention for the show to keep my interest and I'm highly skeptical the show is going to have enough going for it to make up for that deficiency.

Hakaze spirit sure is amazing.
That Samon guy looks interesting.
Yoshino & Mahiro flashbacks were nice.
The black iron syndrome, magic, action...pretty cool!
Yoshino's world turned upside down in a day.
Will be watching this.

Hakaze is just a guide so far.
Hope we'll get to see her magic in real action.
Mahiro seems to only care about finding his sister's killer.
Yoshino on the other hand is pretty clueless and naive.
Things seem to be changing for Yoshino.

Episode 1:
- HanaKana! Yaaaaaaaay.
- Oh god. I totally knew this next girl was Sawashiro Miyuki from the first split-second straining-to-get-out-of-the-barrel type noise she made. Just knew it. Fuck yeah HanaKana and Miyukichi!
- And I love her character. =D
- And now Mizuki Nana! Holy shit, these seiyuu.
- "Even in my underwear I'm still pretty tough." Ahaha, Hakaze you are the best character, hands down.
Maaaaaaaaan this show is chuu2 as fuck. And the soundtrack is absolutely obnoxious. Totally overblown melodramatic orchestral noise in every scene, argh, that drove me to distraction.
But oh my god. Hakaze. She is absolutely amazing.

Episode 2:
- I can't help but laugh every time this show tries to be super serious. Maaaan, Kuroneko, Kobato, and Chuu2Koi have guaranteed I'll never take this 2edgy2dark4uuuuuuuuu stuff seriously again. I can still enjoy it, but not without snickering under my breath the whole time.
- Mahiro is almost comically unaffected by the mass death going on around him.
- Maaaaaaan Frauline Mizuki Yamamoto Evangeline Nana is having a really bad day.
Ahaha seriously, quoting Shakespeare, overly dramatic music, I cannot take this seriously one bit. It's actually not bad, but I'm pretty sure it's not suppoed to be the comedy that it feel like to me. :sd:
This show takes itself absurdly seriously.
Also WTF this ED, haha.

Yoshino & Mahiro. What a pair!
That mage guy was just too strong to be taken lightly.
Mahiro was totally like a rabid dog in that fight.
Quarantining the city is not good...
Yoshino seems to be the smarter and cool headed one.
Those two are like fire and water, a perfect match.

More of the "meh" feeling from last time, although not so bad now that I kind of expect it. The singing scene was nice, and at least they're not going too overboard with the Shakespeare stuff. It looks like we'll be seeing the backstory on Yoshino and Mahiro next time, so maybe that can make them a little more interesting to watch.
Why do I keep having a nagging feeling that Aika isn't really dead?

Episode 3:
- Hakaze might not get to do much other than talk a lot and look really sexy, but that's better tan nothing. And if you have a character that just talks, Sawashiro Miyuki is the best you'll get.
- Nice to see the level of fight animation is keeping up.
Man this ED really does not fit.

So those two managed to get away from the city, but not from the curse.
It was kinda funny how they just casually borrow someones house.
Flashback to their childhood days was a nice addition to the story.
At least we found out how those two became close friends.
Nice, relaxing episode ^^

Backstory episode! Nice to see how the two got to know each other. Some pretty heartwarming moments in there, kind of a change for this show. Meanwhile, Hakaze chills on her island while listening to how it all unfolded. She looks more and more comfortable over there every episode. I feel like she'll be a little disappointed when she actually has to get up and do something.

This episode kind of jumped around rather than resolving one issue at a time. It’s leaving us hanging with wondering about each character and the truth about the past and present that each of them is keeping from others (or perhaps even from themselves). There’s still a lot of bottled up potential that I want to see come out. I really hope we can get the payoff we need given this execution over the last few episodes.

- Hakaze has a nicely shaped head. >_> So I'm guessing Samon is using some logical loophole to convince nature or whatever that Hakaze is dead.
- Heh, communication doll in cleavage.
- Uhhh and then things happen. Wtf, Yoshino teamed up with Eva? Why?
- And Mahiro and Aika weren't blood related, oh boy.
- Okay, so I guess Yoshino wants another way of approaching this issue as insurance, given that all he's got right now is reckless vengeance from Mahiro.
Some nice kinks in the character dynamics here.

Ah, time travel. I have to say, I was not expecting that to be the reasoning. I never really thought of this series and its magic as the sort to gel with time travel, but I suppose with enough magic, anything illogical can be "explained" away easily enough. I see applications for reaching Aika very likely. Looks like it will cause plenty of internal conflict, anyway. Probably for the best, considering how unsympathetic Mahiro has been, and how passive Yoshino has been.

Well at least the Shakespeare quotes had a point. And they finally lead to The Tempest itself. Yoshino remembers that he's the real main character, and pulls out some slick moves before telling Mahiro exactly what the deal's going to be, giving him an offer he can't refuse. Well that confirms that despite his paranoia, Mahiro really was that oblivious the entire time. I'm not sure if Yoshino will find Mahiro's reaction to the truth worth things working out for Hakaze in the end. That next episode title... Well here goes any semblance of realism left, I'd expect.

I'm a bit surprised Yoshino was the one hellbent on saving Hakaze.
Mahiro didn't care much about anything except revenge.
So Yoshino figured out Samon's plan for the princess.
Guess Samon found himself interesting opposition.
Now all they need is a way to cross time.

It sounds simple enough, but it's so totally not.
Looks like Samon had a back up plan if he ever needed Hakaze.
OMG Mahiro's sister was the back up plan by the Tree of Genesis.

If nothing else, this episode was more eventful than the prior, although it’s still comprised primarily of the main group standing around and talking to each other. There’s some painful silliness in how earnestly and seriously the illogical concepts of magic are taken, but there’s also a little progress made on the plot, which is definitely welcome. It looks like things will really start moving along in the next episode, and with any luck, the cliffhanger this episode leaves will be resolved satisfactorily.

Hakaze literally receives a probability-altering missile. That works a lot better when your series is as silly as Gurren Lagann. But hey, she's in the present and alive.
And then both our protagonists die. Halfway through the series. Time to get on that probability altering, Hakaze!
And we hear Aika over the end of the episode, and of the first half of the series. She has to come back to life, or reveal herself from whatever state she's really been in, pretty soon. Damn, every main character is going to have died and come back to life in one way or another by the time this series is over. Maybe this is more like Dragon Ball Z?
Really though, things are getting very exciting here. On to the second half. I hope this all works out well...

I would feel a lot better about all of this, if they'd spent an episode or two less at this location near the tree. I'm happy about Hakaze, but it's taken far too long. I'd like it even better if they actually did kill off the two boys and not revive them in the next episode or two. That would be a significant change that I could cheer.
I probably would have dropped the series an episode or two ago, but Sawashiro Miyuki's got such a nice voice to listen to. The series is going to have to work a lot harder if it thinks that it can push me way from her. ^^

Hakaze becoming such a blubbering virgin feels like a real blow to her character, though.
I was surprised by how much comedy was in here given the serious situations abound, but the heavy commentary of how the first world doesn't care when the third world suffers every day actually kinda works with that. So as more and more focus is put on Hakaze's feelings for Yoshino, and all the comedy that comes with it, it ultimately ties in with the intense climax of the episode to force her to fully realize and accept them, taking them much more seriously than ever before. Based on the preview, this may not be entirely true, though.
More scenes of Aika, which continue to be pretty fascinating. I still think there's a good possibility of her eventually coming back to life in some way, but with this focus on Hakaze being in love with Yoshino, I'm seeing the possibility of Aika and Yoshino living happily ever after becoming less and less likely. And of course there's always been the question of how Mahiro would react. Although at this point I guess there's no telling if all the current protagonists will even be alive at the end.

Episode 19:
Uh, I did not expect Mahiro and Yoshino's reunion to go so well.
Samon's despair is still totally adorable.
Now Hakaze is going to travel through time. Wouldn't that be handy.

Episode 20:
- Going back in time to witness Aika's death. Hakaze that's almost guaranteed to get you in trouble somehow. You know how time travel stories work!
- Although to the show's credit, they address that head-on. Hakaze's reason for going back anyway it kinda iffy but it's acceptable story-wise.
- Yaaaaay naked Hakaze time.
- Aika~
- And hey there. Aika is the mage of exodus.
That was certainly always one of the possibilities, but I admit I hadn't been thinking about it in recent episodes, so when Aika appeared behind Hakaze on the roof, that was a pretty awesome moment. Also gives Hakaze a hell of a better reason to kill her.

Episode 21:
- Haha, Aika takes the news of her impending death very well. She's just absurdly awesome.
- Wait, Aika is taller than Hakaze?
- Fuwa Aika, master detective.
- So Aika kills Aika, but she does it because Hakaze went back into the past. So both Aika and Hakaze killed Aika!
- Oh Hakaze. This will not end well, saving Aika.
- Or she won't get the chance because holy shit Aika is badass. While a lot of the fight was slowmo and talking, when it moved, it looked fantastic.
- Hakaze arrives to find Aika dead. Well, you tried.
Pretty great episode.

Episode 22:
- Flashback. And hey, they actually do look subtly younger. Anime is often rather bad at depicting small differences in age and making it look natural, but I totally buy it here.
- Hakaze is back, but no word on what she told Mahiro and Yoshino. Maybe she just got back and hasn't talked to them yet.
- Yep. And... they take is very very well. A lot better than Hakaze does.
- Uhhh, Hanemura on the other hand. Jeeze.
- Haha I love how apologetic he is after beating the shit out of them.
- Young Aika is so frickin adorable.

Just one more after this. This is a relatively rare case of the manga ending at the same time as the anime. I don't know how much they had to change to make it fit the exact right amount of time, but it definitely feels like more of a finale we're heading toward than most series get. The ending teases us with the possibility of the tragedy ending once more, but I highly doubt that will be the case, especially with the preview.

So the plan is finally revealed.
Hakaze & Yoshino's emotions were clouding their judgement.
I get it, any girl would be angry on an indecisive guy.
Yoshino needs to get over Aika or things are gonna get even more complicated.
Well, at least some of them were enjoying the tropical paradise ^^
And so the fighting begins...

Episode 23:
- There's some great Fraulineservice in this episode. I like seeing her in really casual clothes when she's training Hanemura.
- And she looks phenomenal in that greenish-yellow dress.
- And then that bikini top. Damn.
- Let's toss in Hakaze in a bikini too. I love this episode.
- Oh and plot is happening but WHO CARES. (Just kidding, it's pretty interesting.)
- Hahah, Mahiro's plan involves Hanemura in drag. That's probably his whole reason for it.
- Silly Yoshino, getting shot and stuff.
Oh you cliffhanger you. Good episode, hoping for a great ending.

And another series ends. This one had me disappointed pretty often, but in the end it pulled itself together well enough that, while it's not my favorite of its seasons or anything, it's definitely up there, higher than some stuff I had much higher hopes for, and much higher than I thought it would be when it was at its worst.
This one got a very conclusive finale. It made sense that it wouldn't have to make up an ending since the manga ended at the same time, but still, most series of its kind leave at least some room for continuation, and although it ends by telling us that the end is only the beginning, that's really only about the characters' daily lives now, which isn't something it would make sense to follow at this point. It was nice to see it end with Yoshino and Hakaze just about to run to each other, showing that they'll have a good future together.

Things were pretty serious this time.
The fights were hard as well, but also really good.
Pillar definitely didn't want to go down without a serious fight.
All's well that ends well ^^
Hakaze was pretty much funny without magic.
Everyone finally got a chance to relax after everything that's happened.
The ending was rather nice ^^

Episode 24:
Now that was quite the good ending. Hanemura was pretty badass against the Tree, and I'm glad he got to deliver the final blow, rather than the show trying to twist itself into knots justifying a way to make Yoshino do it.
Oneof the things I enjoyed most in the latter part of the show was watching all the different groups come together. Hakaze, Yoshino and Mahiro, the Kusaribe group under Samon, and the Evangeline group with the government. And let's not forget Hanemura. I though having them all basically rooming together scheming to save the world.
In the end, Aika is definitely the best character. Her nude tease in the video message was hilarious, and she was just fantastic every time she did anything. Second favorite character goes to Hazake and Samon tied. Hakaze would have been first but I'm still iffy on some of the romance stuff, though I'm okay with the pairing in the end. Samon is just completely hilarious though, and totally going on my list of top male characters of 2013 if i remember this show early next year when I'm doing my list. After them, maybe Evangeline.
This show balanced action and drama and intrigue and comedy well. It's not a favorite by any stretch but it's totally competent and worth watching. I'm satisfied.
