We have a separate page to keep track of region 2 titles with English subtitles or dubs available on them.
Click here to see it (http://www.animeondvd.com/specials/articles/r2english.php)
Please add new or missing titles to this thread. We'll add them as we go along.
I was looking for this page earlier. Where is it linked on the main site? I couldn't find it.

I suppose Millenium Actress, Five Star Stories, A Tree of Palme, and Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space should be added. They are all listed as including English Subtitles (although, two of those haven't been released yet.)

The Big-O 1st season DVD box International Version (bcba-1598) is listed as having the English audio track for all 13 episodes.
Only Yesterday - Omoide Poro Poro (vwdz-8024) has English subtitles.

While shopping the pre-order list at CD Japan, I saw that PIBA-1383 and PIBA-1384 have an English audio track. I don't know what this Pecola series is about (it looks a children's show) but, I thought I'd mention it in case somebody is interested.

Thanks for the links! Looks like an interesting little show but, not my cup of tea /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sweat200.gif
Is this a list of Japanese Region 2 discs? Sorry, to be stupid...just checking, since Region 2 includes England... I assume discs released in Europe have English on them.

Apparently it's not obvious. Though it was implied. Maybe a clarification to the title of the thread and page are in order?

It isn't obvious to us British people. When I first saw the list I thought on the lines of UK released DVDs.

I noticed that Tenchi Muyo the movie: Tenchi Muyo in Love DVD is listed as having the English dub and subtitles. I rented this movie from Netflix and I got a Region 1 and 4 dual region disc that has a menu only accessable with the menu button, the ability to change the menus to Japanese, the ability to watch the movie in English with Japanese subtitles, and even an interview in English with Japanese subtitles. Is the region 1/4 DVD the same as the Japanese region 2? Is the later release of this region 1 only? If so, does it still have the same options?

If this was a general resource site, I'd agree. But we're definitely an R1 resource. So when R1 readers, which are the bulk, talk R2, they're talking Japan. Especially when it comes to anime fans asking about subtitles. Since very few people in general have players capable of handling R2-PAL discs, there's usually even less interest.

A little addon for the list :
Tenchi Muyo In Love 2 also have english subtitles (dubtitles).

I know its been said that Five Star Stories has English subtitles but the DVD is also region free. Says on the packaging and I checked it on a few R1 players, it worked. Also my DVD-ROM checked it as region all.
This is a gorgeous looking DVD btw.

I wasn't complaining, I was just explaining how I saw it. Frankly, I don't buy R2 DVDs anyway, but when I do, it's always the British releases, so that's were it had me confused.

Uhm..."Europe" takes in a bit of territory, and things may differ from country to country. Because I'm a crazy language buff with a PAL-capable DVD player, I've been picking up a few European anime discs. Like the French release of "Giant Robo" (which I got because the title seems to be snarled in rights issues in the US, and I don't know when an American R1 release will appear). It has French and Japanese soundtracks, and French subtitles, but no English. And to polish my German, I bought the German releases of Tenchi-Muyo (OAV) and El Hazard (OAV). The German Tenchi has German and Japanese soundtracks as well as German subtitles, but no English. The El Hazard discs, however, do have the familiar American English soundtrack in addition to the German and Japanese tracks even though Tenchi doesn't. (All these discs are readily available through Amazon's European outlets, if anybody wants them.)

Yeah the french are famous for this. They rarely will include english subs on their DVDs, and on english speaking movies they use french hardsubs a lot of the times.
They obviously don't want non french speaking customers, which sucks they would get a lot more of my business.

Sweet! I've been looking for a list like that! /images/graemlins/happy.gif
I'm not sure my wallet can handle the R2 market though. It can hardly handle the R1 market as it is. >_<

Is this going to be just R2 or will it include R3 also?
amazon.co.jp has an advanced search option where you can check for animation with English subs/dubs. It's not foolproof and you have to wade through a lot of US DVDs (Disney, Tom & Jerry, etc), but for those with patience it's a handy thing.
An online translation program (like babelfish) might help, too.

Exactly how did you get this search option to work? Is the translation program a must?
Are you searching in kanji or romanji?
eg. you would have to say '彼氏彼女の事& #24773;' and not 'kareshi kanojo no jijou'
EDIT: OK, so it doesn't like my kanji. But you know what I mean. To see what those kanji are supposed to look like, go into a word processor and hold Alt and press those numbers.

Well, to make life easier, click here: Advanced Search (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/tg/static/-/dvd/search/ref=d_dsr/249-2458139-7853138). The first drop-box is the genre. Select the 5th option for animation. The second drop-box is language and the fourth is subtitle. In both of these drop-boxes English is the third option.
The translation program might be a must if you can't read Japanese at all. Some of the DVDs don't have pictures, so you have to be able to read the titles to know what you're looking at. Of course, no translation software is perfect so a little logic and comprehension skills are also needed. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
For example, when using babelfish the regular edition of Spirited Away is translated as "The God hiding of thousand and Chihiro (usually edition)" while Five Star Stories translates as "Five Star Story".
The Japanese region 2 release of Spirit of Wonder: Miss China's Melancholy has the AnimEigo dub. The insert also claims that it has both Japanese and English subs, but I can't seem to find them anywhere on the disc.
Store-closing half-off sales are my friend. . . .

I was wondering the same thing, where's the R3 with English sub or dub thread? they seem to be getting better and better(Trigun) and much cheaper than the R2's. I'd liek to see a list of all of those R3 discs that have English subs or dubs.
I haven't noticed anyone mentioning Saikano because it has english subtitles.

Yamamura Koji Sakuhinshu (The works of Koji Yamamura) released last May has English subtitles on some (but not all?) of the shorts included on the disc. Mt. Head (Atama-yama), which is the main short, does have subtitles.

At the moment AMO Tokyo is listing Noiseman Sound Insect (http://www.amotokyo.com/default.asp?main=main/preorder.html&navi=7) (catalog # LAW0450251) as having English subtitles. I've been trying to verify this but so far can't seem to find any websites that do.
Japan now has a Vampire Hunter D Gekijou Koukai (Theater Release) Version that is basically the version (Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust) released in the U.S., but this one can have Japanese subtitles. It's in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS, and has all the extras of the American release.
I was hoping that it would also have the Japanese track, but it doesn't... I couldn't tell when I bought it, because the bastards at HMV covered the crucial area that noted language/subtitles with a sticker. They also had another Vampire Hunter D (Bloodlust) that seems to have a Japanese track... but I have a feeling it won't have English subtitles (again, the sticker). I think I'll buy it anyway with my next paycheck (damn Region 2 DVDs are so expensive).
Edit: DOH! Never mind... I see you've already listed it.... I swear I checked first, but for some reason I didn't see it the first time.

With its recent release, add Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind to the list. The Japanese R2 release has English subtitles.
