We've reworked the list a bit and updated it recently with what was in the previous thread. Any changes, please let me know in this thread:

I still need to have a real confirmation that Blue Sub has english subtitles. It doesn't say so anywhere on the net but here. And Battle Athletes with english subtitles are from Odex. Not from DVD Ani. Ondex only published the first season of Vandread on DVD so the whole series shouldn't be on the chart. Apparently they don't care enough to release the rest as well. They don't seem to have released in any format for about a year.

Here's links for Blue Sub and Battle Athletes OVA:

Just had a look over on Yesasia for the Korean Blue Submarine and the 2 volumes they have are not listed with English subs, only Japanese and Korean.

Storywise, it's your typical bad guy kills leader of one planet, blames other group for the death, starts a war for mystical item/power. Dead leader's daughter ends up fighting for good guys.

Mecha look a little strange, almost a stretched out insect look. CGI wasn't too bad. Decent movie, but not a blockbuster must rush out and get it.

Favorite part of the DVD was the music video. Nice, haunting song.

Odex got out of the DVD market and decided to stick with VCD. It's not that they don't care, but they just weren't making enough money to justify doing DVDs for any of their licenses.

Yeah. I read that statement as well. However, that doesn't explain why they've hardly released anything in any format at all this last year.

The Cat Returns (both IVL’s Hong Kong and Daiwon’s Korean version) has English subtitles. Also, the Japanese The Cat Returns / Ghiblies Episode 2 DVD is missing from the R2 list.

Just a typo in the listing:

"Petrine En Famile TV 1 - 52"

It's Perrine, not Petrine.

BTW, Perrine entry in the World Masterpiece Theater database at pelleas.net (http://www.pelleas.net/dbman/db.cgi?db=wmt&uid=default&ID=009&view_records=1)

Well, you have the cheaper R3 version of Space Battleship (Battle Cruiser) Yamato (http://us.yesasia.com/en/Search/SearchResult.aspx) without English subtitles or any English language version. You also have the R2 Yamato series (http://us.yesasia.com/en/Search/SearchResult.aspx), also without any English language options. The R3s are less expensive but are legit, the only problem being you have to buy 15 separate DVDs instead of 3 box releases (that also contains 15 DVDs).

YesAsia used to sell 3 boxes containing the R3 DVDs, but it's no longer listed as available. (http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1004006860/code-c/section-videos/) I tried ordering them in November and evidently I was the reason they are now listed as "temporarily out of stock," as they appear to have discovered they can no longer source them from the manufacturer (Proware).

The only English subtitled Yamato DVDs available would NOT be legit.

I have the R3 Yamato DVDs on the way from JSDVD Mall (http://mall.jsdvd.com/advanced_search_result.php?categories_id=&search_i n_description=1&inc_subcat=1&search_in_description =1&inc_subcat=1&keywords=yamato&x=0&y=0) which was less expensive than going through YesAsia, even after shipping. The funny thing is that if you click on any of the individual Yamato DVDs, (http://mall.jsdvd.com/product_info.php?products_id=4814)and look at the "customers also bought," you'll see many Yamato DVDs along with Kimi ga Nozomu Eien OVA... that's because I bought all the Yamato DVDs and the KgNE OVAs LOL

This thread doesn't look like it gets updated too often, but I thought I'd add the R3 Korea LE of "Tokikake" aka "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" has excellent subs (and great features). The R3 HK SE of Tekkon Kinkreet is excellent as well.

I have this and the OVA episodes have English subs, they're the exact same subs as the Viz dvd. The movie and music image video only have japanese and korean subs, none of the songs are translated. I also have the R2 disc of the movie and music image video and they have no subs whatsoever, so you get a bonus for the korean disc.

They are legit, the korean company that released them do have the license for them and they're not bootlegs - however, that company (the name escapes me) has a bad habit of taking american dvd subtitles without permission and using it on their dvds. If it wasn't legit, you wouldn't be able to find it on yesasia.

Skywise

This is not up for discussion kiches - they're blacklisted on this site for bootlegging. Yesasia unfortunately does sell bootlegs and illegitimate releases in addition to legit ones - they simply don't have the knowledge and resources to known which ones are, and which ones aren't.

DVDAni (now renamed to NOVA) for the most part, since there was so much confusion about their releases. In addition there are other companies, but I don't remember them at the moment - mostly it's handed on a title by title basis in that case. Just be very careful when buying Korean releases in general, and only buy from known good companies. Do a search in this forum and you should find a thread listing some of them. If it looks suspicious, don't take chances.

Is Panorama (HK) a legit company? I'm interested in their Detroit Metal City DVDs that just came out.Yes, they've been around for years. Even on the legit Hong Kong DVDs, the subtitles can be a bit dicey at times. Watching Universe's "A Spirit of the Sun" DVDs was a slightly horrible experience due to the subtitles. It's rather annoying as their live action titles have generally good subtitles.

Also the third Keroro Gunso has just come out from Intercontinental Video (IVL) which also has English subtitles. Judging from the previous two films, it should have great subs.

I ordered the first box the other day, I'll post on here whether the subs are worth it.

According to YesAsia I should get it before the end of the month.

There's a ton of English phrases (Well, swears) used in this series, it would be a shame if they didn't subtitle them, O Yes Massa fakka!

I've not ordered an R3 DVD in a long while, I had a bad experience with the two boxes of Gundam Seed, where their names kept changing in the subs; Athrun-Osila-Oslan-Asland-Othra-whatever. Kuruset or how ever you spell it came out as Cruise, and Flaga was Florida most of the time.

I hope they get the DMC movie soon, I can't wait to check out Gene Simmons as Jack ill Dark.

Greboruri
11-09-2008, 02:14 PM
Watched Panorama's DMC discs. The subtitles themselves are prefect. I think Studio 4°C did the subs themselves as they're far above anything I've seen on a Kong Kong translated realease. And yes, f-ck and even c-nt are in the subs. It's quite clear why there was a wrap-around both DVDs warning that they weren't to be sold to under 18's. I really think there should be more scenes of tamborines and Tokyo Tower getting "raped" by demons from death metal groups in anime.

Now there was some problems with the timing. There are multiple subtitles for signs or dialogue being spoken at the same time, however Panorama have stuffed this up and only one subtitle appears at one time, so occasionaly a subtitle will appear for less than second before being replaced by another. Other than that it's a great release.

I got Detroit Metal City today, and you're right about the timing, other than that it's great, I love the box too, pretty swanky, the other Chinese DVDs I own are bad quality, this is definitely a favourite of mine.

Hopefully they'll release the movie with English subs too. I'm definitely gonna buy the second half of the series too.

the other Chinese DVDs I own are bad qualityThere are some Hong Kong discs with excellent subs. Stormy Night (highly recommended if you like extremely well written and animated kids films), Five Centimetres Per Second, Brave Story, all three Keroro Gunso movies and Tekkon Kinkret all have excellent subs. Though very occasionally some of the grammar isn't all that great on the Keroro discs, but we’re talking about two or three lines in an entire disc.

EDIT: oh, all of the Ghibli stuff has prefect subs too.

There's a Taiwanese and Korean version of this film up on YesAsia too. I just want to get the best one out of those three.

If the subs on the HK versions are the same as the Japanese R2s, then I wouldn't call the subs on Brave Story excellent. They might be fine grammatically and be timed OK, but the actual translations are as bad as dubtitles (even though there hasn't been a dub yet AFAIK).

There's an (American) dub on the UK DVDs, along with much better subtitles. Neither match the subs on the R2J.

There's a thread in the English track:
Brave Story dub (http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showthread.php?t=85913)

And a couple in the R2E forum:

Oh yeah, I forgot about the UK release. I actually read your post comparing the subs in the R2E forum, even though I don't venture there much.

It's a bloody bootleg. Here (http://www.tibe.org.tw/comic/news/20081229_01.html) is the official announcement by Dynamic Planning, license holder of all Go Nagai creations (let me know if you want it translated). Mods should remove all links to that YesAsia page.

Fixed. Send an alert next time, as some of these can be hard to keep track of.

I saw R3 Thai DVDs for MS Gundam: 08th MS Team from Pyramid Digital Co, Ltd. Official or bootleg? They have English/Thai subtitles.

And...please repost the R2/R3 list for all of us to know what's out there.

well I never thought about buying DVDs from other regions before, but since I have seen the first season of nodame cantabile and it was dubbed in English, I will be picking up the R3 Taiwanese versions, good to have a region free DVD player

It's a very solid release. The R3 Korea thinpak is OOP for a while now. The only thing left for now are the R3 Taiwan singles.

Is there an interest of an updated table of some kind? It may be hard to complete, especially with dated (perhaps OOP) releases. I may attempt to this sometime during these upcoming months (doing something similar to what I have done with the ADV/...extras table (http://www.editgrid.com/user/wtk_the_anime_bargain_maven/ADV_Films_|_Sentai_Filmworks).

I was thinking of posting a simple list based off of the archived table plus other titles mentioned in the thread (minus titles noted by Skywise as being bootlegs), but I don't really know anything about R3. So, if you've got something in mind, go to it.

The Korean 3X3 EYES box has English sub/dub. Mine is still being held up by another item that is taking forever to come into stock at yesasia so I am unsure of which dub it is.

I REALY hope it is the Streamline dub but having the subs AND a dub, I am guessing they came directly from the Pioneer release, it's region ALL so I hope it isn't another "DVD Ani" situation. I just hope the video ALSO didn't come from the Pioneer release. I had a look at it the other day to compare it to my Streamline LD and the JP Blu-Ray version and boy is it bad, worse than I remembered actually.

I'd love to know where Pioneer got those masters from, couldn't be Streamline because the LD looks SOOO much better than the DVD version, the DVD was so dark you couldn't see half the show. I also noticed hunks of dirt and crap present on the DVD that were not on the LD. *Sigh*, if only Star Child had remastered the show for the BD release...
