"Medeium" ?? And isn't it missing the link (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/2927.php)?
As I already mentioned in my early preview thread...5 eps of pure fun and can't wait to see the other 70 eps.

That's it, pick on a mis-spelling in something that you can't edit.
I picked on the missing link when I noticed that, too. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hajime no Ippo is such a great show and I'm so happy that it's coming here. I can only hope that this show does well enough to let companies know that we need more sports shows. I shall be thanking the day if it ever comes that Slam Dunk comes out on region 1.
I just may very well check this show out. I'm not much of a boxing fan, but hey, I'm not much of a basketball or a tennis fan and I love Slam Dunk and the Prince of Tennis. So I guess I have nothing to lose with Hajime no Ippo.

I don't even have to have the disc in my hand to know how great a show this is. That said, I don't think Geneon could mess it up, so I'm very excited to see the first few episodes again in higher resolution with sharper picture and sound than my fansubs. Now TRSI just needs to get it in stock really early. /images/graemlins/devil.gif

Cues up "eye of the tiger", starts running toward the local retail store....
....huffing and puffing before lawn is passed, stumbles into car and drives off jamming to "eye of the tiger" instead.

from the review
for now the only woman in Ippo's life is his mother, a hard working widower who does what she can for her son

Recommend you drop the "er". Or don't. Suggests some rather interesting things about Mrs. Makunouchi if you don't, however. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ippo's a great character though.
...
Ippo is really one of those pure kinds of people that when they discover that passion they hadn't known about, one that they excel at, his mind just has him grabbing it all.
[/ QUOTE ]
You hit on a key point there in why I love this series. Ippo is one of my favorite characters in all of anime. He's so damn likeable and you can't help but root for him. I find his relationship with his mom and how he treats others (including his opponents) very endearing.

I think this is something I could get into as well. From what jarhead has said about the main character on several threads, he sounds like a refreshing change from the usual male lead. I also can't resist something that may tug at my heartstrings every now and then, as well the chance to to try another sports show.

I'm not a boxing fan and I really like this series. Preoredered this when it was first announced. Along with Gungrave, my more anticipated releases.
It's a good story, well told, with engaging characters who change and grow.

Not quite.
Yeah a lot of people will ignore this series more than likely. The name isn't too interesting either Fighting Spirit sounds lame.Perhaps people will look at the cover and say hmmm boxing thats something new.
Really this needs to be on tv Adult Swim it will create a fanbase and awareness.
People would be suprised if they give a good series a chance even if they aren't interested in it.Then they'll see just how good some series are. This has worked for me many times I would've lost interest in anime/manga if I didn't.
Example Hikaru no Go I didn't know even what Go was, loved it.
Full moon wo sagashite-gets brushed off as some girly crap-loved it.
Slam Dunk-love it.
High School Kimen Gumi-loved it.
Maison Ikkoku,Fushigi Yugi,GTO,City Hunter,Kodomo no Omocha the list is endless.
I also have a friend who has become an anime fan when I first met him he watched DBZ on tv but knew nothing of anime didn't even realize it was Japanese originally.
This person had no interest in anime.I gave him some stuff to borrow he asked what's it about.I said if I told you it would sound stupid trust me just watch it.Next thing you know loves anime and manga. He also asked me why everything he has seen/read of mine is so good.Is it hard to find good series?I said yeah it's hard but with anime/manga you can't always trust your interests you have to to jump into stuff give things a chance. It also doesn't help when really good stuff isn't license. If I didn't do this I wouldn't be a fan anymore because it would've got boring.
Thankfully there are rental places online, stores you can open up a manga read a few pages, and fansubs, this way people can find what they love and buy it.Watch the other stuff and then brush it off.
Or maybe it's just me that this has worked for. However I'll tell you this before anime/manga I would've never enjoyed some genres like romance and shoujo.

That's for sure. Sometimes if you know too much about a particular subject, the anime bastardization will end making you hate the anime. Where as if you don't know jack about the subject being talked about, you can love it without having to worry about how inconsistant or incorrect it is.

I know this is not my style of series, but is an anime that deserves a wider exposure and good marketing, the sad thing is that knowing Geneon it will be a "Stealth" release just like Lupin basically a press release and nothing more to announce it to the masses, Geneon instead advertising like crazy Ikki Tousen, Gun Grave and ROD tv, things they know that will sell good numbers /images/graemlins/depresse.gif /images/graemlins/shy10000.gif

Yeah they problay won't market this title at all.Or they can come up with a lame way to sell it.Instead of those from the person who directed,or made a storyboard of this,or bought everyone a Coke at the animation studio.Instead of that you use this, from the same manga magazine as GTO,Rave Master,Love Hina and Getbackers, comes Fighting Spirit.Kodansha's #1 knockout.
Geneon must not really care about this title after no box w/vol.

Stop having pre-conceived notions of what this anime is going to be like just because its an anime based around boxing. (Besides, there's an older anime based around boxing that well pre-dates Rocky.)
Just give Fighting Spirit (Hajime no Ippo) a go. You may just be pleasantly surprised /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Anyway, as far as marketing, you're probably right that Geneon will not advertise this show as much as it probably deserves - instead pushing for (what I consider crapper shows) like Ikki Tousen and Gun Grave.
Remember Princess Nine ? I love that series. Remember seeing any kind of advertisements or reviews for it? None that I saw. Just the trailer on DVDs. Raging Bull...er, I mean Fighting Spirit will get the same shallow exposure.

I used to be a big boxing fan, so this title interests me.
The late Bruce Lee was a great fan of boxing. Lee incorporated a number of its techniques into his personal fighting method, Jeet Kune Do (Way of the Intercepting Fist).

Just got this today and haven't had a chance to take in the episodes yet, but I figured I'd post about a few things I've noticed so far.
1) I seem to recall someone mentioning in some thread that the animation clip that leads into the main menu isn't skippable. That's wrong. It is. With the chapter skip button. Still, I'm not so keen on the whole dubbed animation clip menu intro idea, even if it looks like a promising dub. I didn't care for it with Mao-Chan either (even if that one was skippable as well). Don't do this, Geneon!
2) It's been a while since I've been amused by dub outtakes. The numerous sorry offerings that Bang Zoom! continues to generate are boring, and thusly without value. While Fighting Spirit's outtakes aren't pure comedic gold by any stretch of the imagination, I did find myself smiling at the majority of them, while a couple actually brought forth a chuckle or two. Probably the best of the bunch (for me, at this particular moment, anyway):
"You're right, the kid's got a long way to go. About 70 episodes."
It's funny because it's true! /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
Well, while I'd guess that not all of these are true outtakes, I'd rather have pseudo-outtakes like these that required a bit of forethought and are actually amusing as opposed to true outtakes that result in a rather boring few minutes of VAs simply sputtering out random syllables at the ends of difficult lines.
3) Anyone else highly amused by the fact that not only is the Japanese in the OP subbed, but the Engrish is as well? /images/graemlins/happy.gif To be clear, the Engrish lines are subtitled, and then those lines are subtitled underneath in proper English so that people will have some idea of what the heck the intent of the line is supposed to be. I mean, I know quite a few of us are really good at deciphering Engrish, but how many of us would really have any idea about what "I want to dive lost mind" means? /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

The original logo is left intact. Actually, I can't think of any Geneon DVD released in the past few years (other than Lupin the 3rd and Beyblade, I think) where in-show logos were molested in some way. They tend to leave well enough alone when it comes to things like that.

I think Geneon deserves a round of applause for this. Engrish is so common and so commonly meaningless to native English speakers, that it's easy to just dismiss it as gibberish. But the Japanese schools teach everybody over there just enough English to make them dangerous, and even if they aren't communicating with us, they *are* communicating something to each other. Kudos to a company finally recognizing that the word-for-word romanizing of an Engrish sentence not always a correct translation.
*edit*
Oh yeah, the show was good too. I'm not super-excited about it, but it was a fun five episodes. I really like the character designs, and I'm a total sucker for the "work hard and go for it" attitude of anime sports shows.

[/ QUOTE ]
Oh, don't get me wrong; I'm amused by the fact that the Engrish was so indecipherable in this case that additional subtitles were necessary, as opposed to the fact that Geneon went ahead and included said subtitles. I thought it was a good move. For Romaji subtitles, I'd obviously expect to see the Engrish left as-is, but for straight English subs I think this is a good way to go about it if it's entire phrases (as in this case) as opposed to the odd English word dropped in here and there, as is common.
Also, for what it's worth, ADV did the same thing recently with their Cosplay Complex subtitles. The English translation subs read "Let's go to another world together" while the Romaji subs presented the correct Engrish "Let's together go to another world." A small change, but a significant one, at least in terms of the discussion at hand.
Wow...I wonder if "English, Japanese audio/English, Spanish, Engrish subtitled" will become a common sight on DVD's.
I'm still very psyched about getting Vol. 1, but it still hasn't arrived at my house, when I got a shipping notice almost a about a week ago, though I shouldn't complain about not getting a disc a week before release date.
I'm glad the VA's are having fun with the experience, but I hope for some more "meaty" extra features as the series goes on. Anyone know if there are interviews with series creator Morikawa, Japan director, or any such things floating around or included in the R2 releases?

Watched it over the last two days and I must say, it was good as the three previous times I have watched it ^_^
Finally I have in my hands my most anticipated title of 2004. Having only watched the subs awhile back, it was wonderful to see the DVD quality picuture on my TV. It looks great.
THe story is just as addictive as it was the first time around. I don't know what it is, but Ippo for me is the most addictive anime around. Each episode just gets better and better until it becomes almost impossible to just watch 1 or 2 episodes in one sitting. I'd even consider marathoning all 75 at once. I think what makes it so addictive is Ippo himself. It's hard not to love his character and seeing his work ethic is really inspiring, you can't help but root for him.
Another thing I like about Ippo, it's a sports anime about REAL athletes with great work ethics and attitude. Unlike today's professional athletes, there is no ego, fashion, flashiness, attitude. These are major hinderances that are stopping me from enjoying any professional sport. In Ippo, there is none of this, and it really brings out the true essence of a sport and the attitude of an athlete. And it's not just Ippo, but all of the other gym rats as well.
One thing I noticed this time around, I really REALLY love the music for this show. It's done very well, and for some reason I got a Black Heaven vibe with some of the songs. It's that same sort of guitar BGM. I'm hoping the OST is still in print, if not, Geneon, get on that. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
A wonderful series that I recommend everyone checking out. There's a lot of technical details for all the sports fans, but it's not overwhelming for all you non-sports people. It's really all about the characters giving it their all and developing their relationships between each other. And if you are enjoying it now, just wait, it gets SOOO much better and addictive. The wait between volumes is going to be killer.

The music is actually composed by Tsuneo Imahori, the same person who worked on the soundtracks for Trigun and Gungrave. The Japanese versions of Hajime no Ippo OST 1 (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VPCG-84729) and OST 2 (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VPCG-84733) are still available from CD Japan.

It's that same sort of guitar BGM. I'm hoping the OST is still in print, if not, Geneon, get on that. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
[/ QUOTE ]
The music is actually composed by Tsuneo Imahori, the same person who worked on the soundtracks for Trigun and Gungrave. The Japanese versions of Hajime no Ippo OST 1 (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VPCG-84729) and OST 2 (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VPCG-84733) are still available from CD Japan.

Thanks!! Now the always important decision with any Geneon show, import or wait for the domestics.

Nice!!! Yes, please everyone, go out and pick up Ippo today! It's truly a wonderful, one-of-a-kind show that should be supported. YAY, MORE IPPO! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
So I forget the details, but does Geneon have the rights to the Ippo movie Champion Road, or is that dependent on sales also?

Yeah, I know, I hope it at least will become a normal 2 month release. The 3 months between 1 and 2 is a little painful. But hey, just watch it over and over like me!!! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Just got mines in the mail today, and my buddies & I watched it during AX in the hotel since one of them bought it at the geneon booth. Translation was very nicely done for the subs, and it was just as good as the previous 3 times i've watched these episodes ^^ I really believe this series is timeless, and a classic in the making for all those that are just getting their first glimpse of the series from the first dvd.

I highly doubt that. The show didn't have great ratings at all in Japan, and I don't think they'd create a second season solely based on North American DVD sales.

Big O got a second season made because of its support from the US, so anything could happen. Personally I'd like to see another TV series, as the OAVs, while really really pretty, left out a bunch of the non-fight funny stuff.

The Armitage: Dual-Matrix movie was also made as a result of US sales and fan support of the original. There are precedents for this sort of thing, you see. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Oh, I'd also like to say I think it was cool of Geneon to put the honorifics in the subtitle. I only wish they would have used sempai instead of "big guy".

Err Ippo did fine in the ratings. And yes.. Series do. Your delusional if you think that the sudden influx of anime into the states has had no effect on the Japanese production side of things /images/graemlins/tongue.gif One of the reasons theres an influx of sequels in Japan right now is due in part to American licensing of series.

Do you have any proof that Ippo did fine in ratings? I've heard quite the opposite, but I've never seen any actual proof.
And I guess I am dillusional because I have never heard of second seasons of series being created because of DVD sales in North America. I honestly didn't think the anime market in NA was that significant (aside from a few highly popular series of course).

Um, hello? Have you been reading this thread? Big O only had a second season created because of American DVD sales and the Cartoon Network ratings.

Right, but Big O 2 was also co-produced by Cartoon Network, which aired both seasons. Ippo won't have the benefit of potentially having positive ratings.
Has there been anything else besides Big O 2?

Armitage and Mezzo DSA for example. Also although it's not due to America so much as worldwide acceptance, Initial D 3rd stage and 4th stage were brought about due to the large amount of support the show received in other countries. That's not to say that Initial D isn't insanely popular in Japan as well because it is, but it has a much bigger budget now thanks to the world market.

Direct involvment like Big O? Mmm.. What others have mentioned, plus Ghost in the Shell TV and the new movie. Crap, i ussually don't pay attention with all the co-funding funny buisness that goes on. It happens enough that it stopped registering in my brain.
The majority of it is done in more of a "Hey, this sold to the R1 market, lets make more, we can probably sell the sequel" Under that catagory you have lots of stuff some of which may or may not have been made with out oversea funds. Happy Lesson, Full Metal Panic, Comic Party OVAs, To Heart Season 2, Jubei-chan 2 and Animation Runner Kuromi are just a couple of series that have gained more support due to overseas licensing. Hell, right about now if you see a series get a second season, chances are it's just been licensed for R1 release. A nice big indicator for a series being licensed in R1 is the appearance of a second season.
You can also try looking around, you'll find stuff like this ^^

I don't know, maybe you're right. I would have thought though if the show was getting good ratings they would have kept going because there's plenty of more manga left to animate.
They did stop at a good place, though. I was satisfied with the ending.
I would love to get more Ippo, but I just don't think the chances are good. I will try and do my part and get as many people as possible to buy Ippo.

There's the second season of Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 that ADV is said to be co-financing/producing, based on the sales and fan interest in the US for the first season.
The newer Tenchi series are also all products of very heavy overseas interest in the franchise.
