I did still enjoy the OAVs, but there was still something lacking in them for me that the TV series had and the OAVs didn't. Perhaps no Kanna & not enough Class President?

Same here. The ovas are nice, but I like the tv series better. Well except for the ending. Then again I don't I've seen the ending of the OVA if there is one.

Positive for me /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif. I love everything that is Happy Lesson /images/graemlins/happy.gif. The beach/hotsprings was worth the price of the disc

This OVA was a lot of fun. I agree that the TV series is better though, too. I hope ADV has Happy Lesson Advance, this show is too much fun!

I second what everyone has said. I too hope we get Advance sometime in the future.

Hmmmm... I've watched the tv series and OVA's twice through now, once on R2, and I wonder if I missed something. I was always under the impression that the OVA's took place before/during the first couple episodes of the tv series, and never got the impression that Hazuki and Minazuki were his real brother and sister, but always a pair of kids that he grew close to in the orphanage. The only reason I thought that the first ep was changed wasn't because they were changing anything like that, but simply because the OVA run time was longer than tv broadcasting would allow. Did I miss something?

As for the amusement about the misconception that the first ep was edited by ADV, I was sitting in ADV's industry panel when a fan asked in an extremely annoyed tone why they changed it :D Surprising how aggrivated some people can get when they just don't have all the information.

This isn't a criticism of the review btw, I've just always been rather Happy Lesson for reasons I can't quite explain, and wonder if I could POSSIBLY be that oblivious... Here's hoping that ADV gets Happy Lesson Advance, and even more importantly Happy Lesson The Final.

OH, and call me crazy, but I could swear that ADV missed an OVA that was released after 12.5 but before the start of Advance...

Did a check on CDJapan...

Happy Lesson was a 3 ep OVA but then they released a 4th OVA on 3/28/2003

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=KSXA-24494

Says its has something to do with the class presidents b-day.

Happy Lesson OVA 5 was released on 5/23/2003

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=KSXA-24495

No idea what this is about... no description at all on CDJapan.

Happy Lesson TV

A bunch of Character DVDs... clips from the show I guess and the VA talking about it...

Happy Lesson Advance

And finally Happy Lesson The Final - Ep 1 was released on 5/28/2004

Some other Happy Lesson DVDs are listed... seems to be live action shows/concerts with the VAs. Not sure where ep 12.5 is listed.

Anyway... back to the show itself. Yes Chitose doesnt really have any sisters, in the OVA or TV series. He met Hazuki and Minazuki at the orphenage where they became sort of his family. That's true in both OVA and TV series. Although Mina is more forthcoming about her feelings in the OVA... you can still get that feeling in the TV series as well.

I always thought that the TV series and OVA was one and the same show... just that the TV filled in a lot of the gaps that the OVA couldnt show. From what I understand, Happy Lesson started out as a radio show... then had a game made... then the OVAs and then the TV show.

BTW anyone know why the Chitose is called Susumu on the manga? Thats the only difference I can tell but outside of his given name change... its all the same. (ok so he sleeps with his 5 Mamas in the manga!)

Saw the OVAs before the TV series. Voted positive.

Oh good, I'm not crazy then :D I'm guessing that 12.5 is probably that 5th OVA, which, if that's the case, I'm wondering why 4 never got released.

As for the manga, there's a lot different with that I thought, the Mama's are a LOT more... um... mellow than they are in the anime, and things just seem to be a lot lower key... That being said, I wish ADV would release another volume, I rather liked the manga too :D

I voted positive too. I kind of wish ADV would have brought this out before the TV series though.

<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Minazuki wants to marry Chitose in the TV series too, at least that's what the insert said for one of the DVDs. </span>

It was the good extra (actually, the only thing worthy from the series, anyway) that was in the last R2-disc of Happy Lesson tv that was missing from the ADV-discs. Was hoping it would be included in the R1-OVA as an extra.

Does anyone know if ADV has the rights to the other OVA episodes? I don't remember anything being mentioned about them, hell I didn't even know they existed /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif. I also didn't know about chibi theater but I really want them now /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

ADV simply announced that they had the OVA, so I presume that included OVAs 4 and 5. However, I wonder if ADV are also looking into the new OVA, Happy Lesson -The Final-.

From the review

Before the TV series came out there was a three part OVA release that first introduced us the world of Cheeto? er, Chitose and his situation.

[/ QUOTE ]

So I'm assuming they still didn't fix the mis-pronounciation at all in this set?

bummer.

I really enjoyed this. An extended look at the first episode, and two new stories to go along with it. The only thing that bothered me, was that the storyline for the Vacation and Holiday OVA's seemed to be a little different from the series. Like how Chitose met Hazuki and Minazuki. Just seemed a little off, but very enjoyable none the less. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Well, I'm glad Chris mentioned the reason the s2nd angle is there. Had me scxratching my head, because I couldn't see any obvious differences between the two angles.

Shame it couldn't be used to provide a better view of the hot springs episode. (talk about a waste of a hot springs episode /images/graemlins/wink.gif )

The OVAs definitely helped to explain where Hazuki and Minazuki came from and their relation to Chitose. I do wonder why for the series they had Chitose pronounced as Chee-tos. Maybe that's part of why he's always irritated and/or in a bad mood (heh heh). I've seen the original and it is supposed to be Chee-to-say. These episodes were a lot of fun. I especially like Mina's since she's so adorable and sweet.

Now, all we're missing is Happy Lesson Advance and The Final. Speaking of which, it's supposed to be out in Japan already. Has anyone seen the eps for Happy Lesson: The Final yet?

Voted postitive.

I like both the TV and the OVA. I like the OP song from the OVA just a little better than the TV one, although I really like both. Plus, the Mamas sing the ED.

I enjoyed all the spoofs of other shows the OVA contained. It's one of those shows were you have where you need to use the slo-mo to watch all the funny little bits in the OP.

Minazuki is the epitome of cuteness when she is on the couch meeting the Mamas for the first time. Everyone in the room watching it went "KAWAII". The beach episode was great and Kisaragi broke new ground in the science of "mouth drink mixing".

I tend to agree the OVA episode 1 was a bit more coherent than the TV with the additional content.

I kinda prefer the TV series follow on dealing with each mum but the shorter OVA blitzes straight to the "service" beach and onsen episode. Something to be said about that as well! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
