An excellent set of episodes. The only low point was the scream of anguish provoked by the cliffhanger at the end of the third one.

Excellent stuff - I just wish Bandai had a 6 week release schedule.
The English dub continues to be very strong, and Crispin Freeman makes a great lunatic.

There's so much info appearing now that I think a rewatch of the series (1st & 2nd seasons) will be in order.

Saw these 3 episodes already on Toonami (UK) some of the best episodes of the series /images/graemlins/happy.gif Need to get round to ordering this and vol 2 on dvd.

I didn't see it mentioned in the review, but can I presume that this disk continues to have the season 1 opening (song - "Big O!") attached to the episodes instead of the season 2 opening (forgot the title but sounds like the theme to Gerry Anderson's "U.F.O.")? Did Bandai ever give any sort of explanation as to why they didn't use the original season 2 opening, even as an extra?

Episode 22 has the video from the "UFO" opening, but continues to use Big-O! for the music. 23 has the season 1 opening as normal, and 21 has the opening credits in the recap portion at the beginning of the episode. And no, no explanation from Bandai.

Awesome batch of episodes, but that is to be expected. I can't wait for Vol4 next month.

As for the opening, yes it is the one from season 1. Ep 22 has the video from S2, but still the S1 music. I still don't totally understand why they don't show the REAL opening, at least as an extra. I don't care what it was a parody of. All the music from that series is taken from something else, so they should've had to redo the entire soundtrack if it was for some stupid copyright reasons.

The problem is, according to speculation, this is because the 2nd season them borrows from Gerry Anderson's UFO theme, and Gerry Anderson apparently has some notoriety in terms of going after people who borrow from his stuff in the courts. Thus the unfortunate (but understandable) edits.

It just makes you love lawyers and the whole IP field in general, doesn't it?

That was meant to happen though, it gave more time to the plot or something.

I'd say let him go after them. The courts can't do anything against it since it was done in another country. Why isn't he doing it as it is now?

My guess is that Japan tends to be less friendly to lawsuits (particularly IP-related ones) than the US, thus some reluctance as to going after the original Japanese creators. However, with the US being as lawsuit-happy as it is, Anderson would have no problem going after Bandai Entertainment if they left the OP as it is (Bandai Entertainment being the American, therefore more accessable, company involved). IIRC, Anderson had successfully gone after MTV for something similar and effectively won out (whether through actual court victory or some settlement), so it's quite possible that Bandai decided to take the safe route since they don't have as deep a pocket as MTV.

This is all my guess based on what I've read during the Cartoon Network run, which was similar in that respect and the same issues came up (especially when one ep did run with the original OP and people noted the strong similarity between "Respect" and the UFO opening theme...thank goodness it slipped past Anderson's radar at the time!).

I didn't watch it either. It looks washed out and bad and I'm not a fan of the dub. Add in commercials and its an unappealing venue /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Actually, it wasn't so much a choice as more of a 'lack of easy access', /images/graemlins/happy.gif if i'd had someone around who had cable who didn't mind my coming over at late hrs, man, i would have watched it. But a little patience is good for me, so i feel ok about it. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
