/images/graemlins/wink.gif In any case, I just want to say the clean ED is a nice treat. It really blends well with the somewhat short song. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Looks like this is the new series I'll be looking forward to after AL, and alongside with AzuDai.

Positive vote from me. I liked the Jonathan The Seal episode more than I thought I would and so far his antics haven't gotten annoying as some mascot characters do. It took me forever to figure out what the heck Diabolo was, but overall I enjoyed this disc and I'm really looking forward to the next volume...

I've actually seen it done live, though I didn't know it was called that. I used to go through Hamburg, Germany once a year or so, and practically around the corner from my hotel was a live variety-show theater that specialized in performances of acrobats, jugglers, tightrope walkers, animal acts, etc. After seeing it once, I was charmed by the whole thing, and made a point of hitting the Variete theater when I was in town after that. And in one show I did see a young man doing the Diabolo thing. It struck me as a sort of inside-out yo-yo -- manipulating an hourglass-shaped prop with a wire stretched between two sticks held in either hand. Unfortunately, the guy I saw was off his stride that day and dropped the thing a couple of times... All in all, even done well it did seem like a pointless display of technical skill, and my reaction was about that of the audience in Kaleido Star to Rosetta's performance. Maybe it's a European thing, I dunno. Sora had the right idea <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> in spicing it up a bit </span>, I would say.

Heh. That's alright lookit what I found in the Sunday paper (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/pacificnw/2004/0620/fitness.html).

Apprently there's a school in the Seattle area that will teach circus acrobatics to anyone with the time, money and inclination. Nifty, eh?

Positive from me, I'm really enjoying the series so far. Anyone else sad to see Rosetta leave after only one episode (though I'm pretty sure she'll be back, hopefully sooner rather than later)? She's definitely my favourite character of the series so far.

I just realized something about the English dub of this series. Accents. Or rather, the lack of them. We have an international cast here: Sora is Japanese, Mia is Dutch, Rosetta is French-speaking Belgian, and Yuri is Russian. Yet everyone is depicted speaking near-perfect American English, with only Yuri showing even a slight accent and Rosetta throwing in an arbitrary "merci." Only Sora's stepfather is depicted having some hesitancy with English at all, notably when he approaches Mr. Policeman for directions.

Just one character so far has been shown to speak with an overt accent -- the Chinese sage in Volume II, and it's an over the top, exaggerated for comic effect accent.

I think what's happened is this: ADV is following the lead of the original Japanese soundtrack. Although the characters are theoretically speaking English within the frame of the story, they're actually speaking Japanese for the convenience of the audience. Subtleties like English spoken with Dutch, French, Russian, or even Japanese accents would be lost, and everyone ends up speaking standard Japanese. But Japanese spoken with a Chinese accent, that they're very familiar with, so that's the one foreign accent that does get used in the Japanese original. And ADV just followed the lead without anyone really thinking it through.

Did you miss Sarah's accent?

If Sora had been given a "Japanese accent" I daresay the dub would have been called a travesty. She actually is supposed to be pretty good at English anyway, she spent her time in English conversation classes instead of studying for school.

EDIT - damn it, don't go and post about Sarah's accent when I'm posting! ARGHH.

Not to mention that I'm FAR more likely to buy the concept of everyone there speaking fluent English instead of fluent Japanese.

I was watching it with my room mate, who's been into anime far longer than I have, and he asked me to turn it to English because having all those Americans speaking Japanese was bugging him.

I found that vastly amusing for some reason.

I was about to ask how you know this about Sora, since I don't think it's been stated so far in liner notes or in the show itself, then I thought to look up your personal info. "Oh my gawrsh!" I thought. "It's Ringo!" So I guess you do have an inside track on background information those of us out here in the audience have yet to see...

Actually, I think I would have been satisfied if Mia had been given just a light accent. Dutch has kind of been the story of my life lately (one of my jobs is being a comics translator for a European publisher, with an emphasis on Dutch), so I tend to notice it in the rare places where it shows up, as in Kaleido Star. (That e-mail message Mia is shown getting from her grandmother in Volume I is the first example of Dutch being used in anime I've seen, though I can't swear it's correct.)

Did you happen to compare the dub script to the subtitle script? There were many and, I felt, excessive changes to the English dub script that really marred the first volume. There were huge rewrites everywhere from episode 2 on, including taking away the Fool's pervertedness. Has it improved any? I'll be picking this up tomorrow, but if the dub script is still unnecessarily sanitized, I'm going to give up on this title.

Fool's Eng-version dialogue was dumbed down. /images/graemlins/sad.gif Actually, some of it didn't make sense in context.

That was the problem with the rewrites in the first volume, which mostly centered around (but weren't limited to) the Fool and Anna. The rewrites didn't appear to have anything to do with what was going on onscreen. Anything that even remotely suggested sexuality was completely scrubbed clean. There were also some pretty big and unnecessary changes in the episode about the little girl whose mother was a trampoline artist.

I take it you mean in volume 2 also? I've got it sitting here ready to watch, but I've only watched volume 1 dubbed and wasn't happy with the changes. If they're just as bad in vol.2 I'll abandon the dub completely and just watch it subbed. Which is a shame since I liked some of the performances.

Reason #18 why I never listen to dubs.

Just picked up my copy this evening and looking forward to watching it over the weekend. Very cool poster, but I wish they could come up with better cover art. I wonder if they plan on continue this trend of putting Sora in strange costumes, and even stranger poses through the whole series?

Somewhat of a spoiler, but I have to ask. Does Sora ever put in the question that we always see her in during the title presentation or by the last scene of the ED? Yes or No would suffice. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm a sub snob, so sue me. Comes from growing up in the 80's when thanks to dubs, dead characters were 'in the hospital and expected to make a full recovery', cities were always completely evacuated just before the alien monster arrived, exploding enemy tanks were driven by robots, and grown men sat around drinking giant bottles of 'spring water'. I just had bad dub experiences early on that I've never really gotten over.

Doesn't mean anyone else can't enjoy their dubs.

And I've gotten way off topic here. Sorry.

There was only one notable instance that caught my attention of what appeared to be the Fool making an ecchi comment towards Sora in the dub this time around and I immediately switched to the sub track for comparison purposes. Turned out it more or less mirrored the Japanese track completely. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

So unless ADV took it upon themselves to sanitize the sub track AS WELL AS the dub track for Volume 2, I'm not sure the abuses are as glaring this time around. And despite DLW's assurances that this was a licensor-mandated decision, most of the offensive changes originated from Sandra Krasa's sloppy script in Episodes 2 &amp; 3 and have more or less been smoothed out since Kathleen Moynihan took over in Episode 4.

(Seems like poor Sandra is taking a beating over both her scriptwork and her Layla delivery in this series... which is kind of a shame 'cause I think her direction is turning out sweet and she's been getting some great performances out of the entire cast. Especially Cynthia, Jay, Nancy and Serena.)

I have to say I'm now a big fan of this series. For a while I was on the fence, having only seen the first episode from a Newtype disc. So I picked up Vols 1-2 and it completely charmed me. I've only watched the dub so far, so I can't comment on any changes; but it didn't interfer with my enjoyment at all. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I, of course, voted positive. Admittedly there are times when I tire of the will Sora fail, eveyone's picking on Sora, etc. drama; but overall the show is just too charming to resist.

And Jonathan is a good addition to the cast. Kalos must have failed basic leadership and motivation training big time. It doesn't exactly support or inspire the troops does he?

Okay I know that Sora is the star and must be talked about, but are there any other Mia fanboys other than me out there?

If it's the comment about the beach, then I disagree. The dub says "She never takes me to the beach." The subtitle says "Swimsuits are the best way to get to know each other." The first comment is innocuous, the second is etchi. There were other instances I noticed, too. In all fairness, though, it wasn't nearly as flagrant as the first volume. I tried not to be hypercritical when comparing the dub to the subtitles. Still, I found it annoying that it was even necessary in the first place.

Do you have a link to dlw stating the changes in the dub script were mandated by the Japanese licensors?

Yeah, I'm in your corner on this one. I can actually understand that the 'tough love' leadership approach will work well for certain individuals... and I think Sora's a great example of one. She's risen to the occasion in almost every instance where she's been pushed thus far.

However, Kalos isn't flexible when it comes to the rest of the cast. Inspirational leadership isn't exactly his calling card and while I don't know how the events in Volumes 4 &amp; 5 will come to pass, I can kind of understand how and why it happens. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

Boy no kidding! All the back biting amongst cast members, and sink or swim attitude. It doesn't seem like a terribly pleasant place to work.

Episode nine was probably the worst. <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Letting the new girl go up and try a dangerous new stunt without any sort of preparation at all and nearly get herself killed?! Just a quick question about this show, and I'm not trying to sound bitchy or like I'm complaining here, but is it right that Kaleido Star is currently only listed as a six disc release?

It's just that a couple of reviews I've seen have listed it as 'Disc 1 (of 6)', like that. If this means a delay between volumes 6 and 7, I don't care, I can wait, because we can be sure it will definitely all come out eventually. I just want to know for sure now before I start getting the show is all.

I don't have a problem with it. I have about a dozen titles I'm collecting right now, so it's rare there isn't something new to watch every week. Add in a couple of rewatches, new CDs to listen to, new manga to read, and the occassional visit by my life, and two months between volumes is just about right.

I'm not quite sure where this note should go, but... Nuku Nuku TV #4 came out here a little early, and I noticed one of the trailers in the previews section was for Kaleido Star. But it wasn't the same trailer ADV had been using. They made a new customized trailer with narration (like they did with Princess Nine) that is more than just the opening titles of the show. It was both intriguing because it used scenes apparently from episodes to come and because it was exciting enough to get me thrilled about the show all over again. (And I've already seen the first two volumes.) I like these little tastes of what's coming!

Well now we don't really know yet. It was more of a friendly kiss on the cheek in the episode. We'll hopefully find out more when she shows up again.

Gotta try to scan that poster though, see if it can be turned into a wallpaper.

So lesbianism is kind of determined by the observer (aka Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle)? /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Does that work for catgirlness too?

Yep, a Mia standee was supposed to be included... (http://members.cox.net/rabutin2/kaleidostand.jpg)

Hmm, I wonder if the characters featured on the stage panel are the characters that will have a standee...

I got it, it was one of Mia Guillem. It even said it on the back of the case. Are you sure that it did not just fall out when you open it? Ask for an exchange or something.

Yes, I was extra careful when opening it because I expected the little thing to fall out, so I know it did not.

Does anyone have any experience with ADV when something's missing like this?
