I really love this show /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif. It keeps me smiling or lol the whole time I'm watching it.

We did find a lot of things enjoyable on this volume though but some of the areas just seemed to go on a bit longer than they should, such as parts of the culture festival and Sakaki's dream itself. The slightly surreal and languid comedy style used works well in a number of areas but just falls short when it goes on too long in some scenes.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yay! Somebody agrees with me (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showthreaded.php?Number=517316). (I'm still in the positive camp despite my gripes.)

I have to admit it's something I've noticed, too. The timing of some of the comedy is off, and can drag too long. But it's only a few times, and it's still a show I'm loving.

lol, I'll also have to agree with all 3 of you guys. This volume, while still fantastic, wasn't as good as the first. Maybe it's because Yukari is starting to irk me a bit.....

Well, to contrast with what's been posted so far, I don't feel like Azumanga totally hit its stride until the trippiness of Osaka's and Sakaki's dreams (I adored the shore before, but after nearly hyperventilating during Chiyo's flying scene, I remembered what it was like to truly love anime again /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif). That, the crazy music, the extreme minimalism, and trying to figure out what the hell Sakaki's thinking everytime she blushes...all wonderfully out of step with the typical comedies. Of course, the thing I realized about Azumanga is that its as much about nostalgia (or about the beauty of being a kid, even if you never can fully appreciate it at the time) as about the humor.

You nearly hyperventilated during that scene? Yikes. That's like the total opposite of my reaction, which was more along the lines of, "Awww, Chiyo's flying through the air using her pigtails. Isn't that cute? <20 seconds passes> Okay, how long is this going to go on for... get on with the rest of the show already."

For me, it was the audacious timing that made it funny. But then, well-applied repition and minimalism have always been my favorite comic devices, so those scenes are just tailor made for me. Everyone else's mileage will vary extremely, but I'll be cracking up the whole time /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

this series is one of my all-time favourites. between this and the manga i keep laughing each time i see it.
did this just ship now. for some reason i had a copy shipped to me nearly a month ago. were the collectible pins alternating with each dvd release? (I didn't receive any in vol.2)

Honestly of all the episodes in Azumanga these on disc 2 & 3 were my least favorite because all they did in them was focus on Sakaki getting bit... I mean c'mon 3-4 episodes of this crap? ugh. Can't wait till they get to the summer home on vacation and Tomo-chan shines again.

While I'm still loving this series, I didn't think the second volume was quite as good as the first. It was still pretty darn funny though.
Of course, what I'm really waiting for is the Maya arcs!

Hmmmm...yes. Except for all the episodes that don't focus on Sakaki getting bitten. But then, if you know the show, why'd you buy the disks if you dislike the content so much? Wait till it gets back to what you enjoy - that's what this sort of things all about /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Wow! You reviewed the dub-version. you're so brave. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
AzuDai's one of my favorite anime-series. I love all the episodes but sufficed to say, I can only comment objectively on the dubs.
My thoughts on the dubs are that Tomo-chan's and Nyamo's dubs were really good and the only dubs/scenes that kept me from switching to the japanese-vocals in this volume. Especially, Nyamo's. Monica Rial's sounded eerily similar to and as pleasant as Aya Hisakawa's.
Yomi's and Kagura's were kinda ok. The rest of the dub-actors should just take a summer-job as drive-thru crews at some fastfood-joint to work on their vocals.

As much as I like the show, some of those scenes drag on. Like the Osaka Dream as it were. Personally speaking they could have used those to give Chihiro more screen time. *Runs*
I thought this came out a while ago, but uh... yeah, I enjoyed this disc. I wasn't sure about the reversible covers after the first volume, but I think I'm going to go with reversed. Can't wait for vol. 3 so I can get ahold of the pin...

It did, but when Chris reviews a DVD depends on when he gets a copy or well in some cases buys one. And of course what else is on his pile.

Well, I hate to jump on this bandwagon, but I felt the exact same way. The length of such bits as the end of Tomo's dream (when she's poking Yomi), as well as the bit with Sakaki petting the dog, went on waaay too long. I almost didn't want to watch the last episode on the disc, but then I did and it redeemed the rest in my opinion.
But ultimately though, I like Azumanga overall. Even when it is not funny, it is at least pleasant to watch.

I dont read it so much as negativity that would impact overall feeling for the release, but more a "step back and view it objectively in light of all the hype".
As much as I love Azumanga (it's probably #4 on my all-time list), the complaints are, to an extent, warranted. The slow paced repetitive humor does split opinions, definitely. I can see some of the complaints as having merit. Sakaki petting Tadakichi forever did have me slightly irked, even when I expected it this time, having seen the fansubs.
Nonetheless, the series is wonderful overall. All hail Osaka.

I agree with you that AzuDai needs that "step back" approach. IMHO, you summed up what splits the "yehs" and "nays" on this show. I'll differ on the Sakaki/Tadakichi scene though. I thought the scene where Sakaki petting Tadakichi really revealed a lot. Finally, Sakaki had a chance to "indulge" herself. For being such a "strong" person in a lot of people eyes, she really is gentle. Chiyo caught a glimpse of this with the career questionnaire on the first disc, but, ironically, she misses it when Sakaki is introduced to Tadakichi. Sakaki is actually being quite open. How I'm viewing the series so far, Chiyo is the key. The problem is that she is smart enough to pick up on all personalities of the characters underneath the surface, but she's not mature enough to make sense of it all. Vol. 2 of AzuDai actually has me wanting Vol.3 right now.
Edit: Corrected spelling.

I really enjoy a show that makes me laugh as much as Azumanga Daioh does. The couple of slow scenes do drag a bit, but since that is the point I didn't mind much. I wish vol. 3 would hurry up....

I enjoyed this volume. While it didn't focus as much on the deadpan comedy as it did in the first volume, it did utilize more of the subtle comedy. Like they didn't have to reach for it as much as they did in the first volume. But there were still plenty of 'laugh out loud' moments.
The thing that made me enjoy this volume more, is that Sakaki had a lot more to say than the previous volume. She's my favorite character out of the bunch thus far, and I like Christine Auten's portrayal of her. I don't think they could have picked a better VA for Sakaki.
With Kagura joining the bunch in the next volume, I think that there's going to be a lot more hilarity in the show. And a lot more for Sakaki to say. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

While Azumanga Daioh is one of my favorite shows, I have to agree with most of the comments that disc 2 and especially the upcoming #3 have some of the weaker aspects of the show with jokes taking far too long and the whole Sakaki + cat thingy was getting old. The end of Tomo's dream with her repeating the same phrase over and over and over again annoyed my parents so much that it had them mouthing profanities. (try imagining a bunch of old folks above the age of 60 cursing and you'll see what I mean)

Finally got my copy after having it 'lost' by the courier.
This volume contains my favourite episode in the series, and IMO the funniest scene as well: The section in the Culture Festival where Tomo goes 'advertising' in the catsuit thingy literally made me fall off the chair laughing, the first time I saw it. No other anime has ever done that to me.
Yay for AzuDaio v2!

I agree... the humor is in the fact that it does go on so way too long. [absurdly overanalyzing mode] Sakaki is ultimately a figure of grand tragedy, for she is obsessed with "cute," but is constantly barred from partaking of cuteness. [over-the-top mode] Were it not for the friendships she forges with the other AzuDai characters, she would doubtless end up a teenage suicide. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif [/over-the-top mode] Sakaki longs to be cute, but knows she isn't and can't carry off a cute look. Her attempts to make cute stuffed animals are disasters. She is cool, but I doubt she is actually aware of that; and even if she were, it would be no consolation to her. She doesn't like "cool," but coolness is what the universe allows her. Consider (BIG Sakaki spoiler: ) when she finally does make a connection with a cat, it is the coolest type of cat in Japan. Thus I argue Sakaki is among the most tragic figures in anime, constantly barred from what she most wants. Mostly agree but in the split screen with ribbons worn by Sakaki & Chiyo-chan, I thought Sakaki was WAY cute. And with the cat-girl ears off the scale. Admittedly Chiyo is classicly kawaii; but can't we just bend the rules a bit for Sakaki?
And your spoiler Maya is the coolest of cats!

I like. The only thing I'd go against is the "suicide" thing. Don't worry, I can see where you could get that from, but I think Sakaki would be a strong enough "personality type" that she would ride it out. Out of the bunch, Sakaki could weather any storm. The others I'd have my doubts about.

I'll differ on the Sakaki/Tadakichi scene though. I thought the scene where Sakaki petting Tadakichi really revealed a lot. Finally, Sakaki had a chance to "indulge" herself. right now.

I agree... the humor is in the fact that it does go on so way too long. I think one of the reasons Sakaki is one of the most popular characters in the series is because of how she resonates with many in the audience. All she really wants is to love and be loved in return and yet all her attempts at displaying affection to the cats is met by violence and she is constantly misunderstood by everyone. It is truly a magical moment when finally her display of affection towards Maya is reciprocated and for me, that was one of the most heartrending scenes that actually brought tears to my eyes. Sakaki is in fact a tragic figure who ultimately meets her salvation and it is not difficult for us to root for her and sympathize with her predicaments.

Well, I was in "over the top mode." I was just being morbid, if not flat out evil. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Very well said, though I suggest that you slowly take your AzuDai dosage down a bit. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif /images/graemlins/wink.gif
I love everything about this show, even the slow parts because I know they're there to build up certain aspects of the characters personalities for something down the road(no show can be 100% on ALL the time). This shows characters are so refreshing for breaking the anime stereotypes I would enjoy watching a second season of them all just eating breakfast. /images/graemlins/wink.gif Disc three can't get here fast enough, it's taking every ounce of willpower I have not to download and watch the rest of this.

I really enjoyed Sakaki's daydream of Chiyo-dad playing baseball. I still haven't listened to the English dub.
Question: what was that theme playng during the folk dance? It sounded like something from my dad's Irish CDs. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Wasn't that just a variation of "Turkey in the Straw"?

I haven't received my copy from DDD yet. But, relying on a less than perfect memory, I think you're right.

Turkey in the Straw??? /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif
Yup, "Turkey in the Straw". Good old square-dancing music. It seems to be the standard tune for the folk-dances at Japanese school festivals. At least, I heard it used in a similar way in a Cardcaptor Sakura episode (the one about Toya's school's culture fest and the cross-dressing Cinderella play /images/graemlins/happy.gif ).

Yup. It's a song filled with deep meaning about a turkey...and straw...
/images/graemlins/happy.gif
It has actual lyrics, but they are rarely sung anymore - but the tune lives on at folk dances. It's an old folk tune with no recorded composer.

LOL! I just watched episode 7. That was so funny when that girl asks Osaka what the object was in the top right corner and Osaka says "Hanshin". The look on the girls face afterwards is priceless. She's all freaked out.

Not sure, but taking a stab, it's probably a play on words.
Red - akai
Tomato - akanasu.
They both have the same first kanji.
