Well it got good scores, which is always a plus. The technical side seems like it'll be very impressive since it got an A for video and audio which is rare. The wait for this one is painful.

Frankly, what irked me the most is that the summary paragraphs used on the DVD and in the promotional material really give away, well, most of the important stuff here in the first volume.
[/ QUOTE ]
Funny that you should mention that. I never read the backs of DVDs or the website summaries anymore. A friend of mine looked up the HGJ vol 7 on Geneon's website and then told me, "I'm pissed, I don't even need to watch the show, I know what will happen.". So studios take note, stop spoiling the shows on the summaries. /images/graemlins/anger100.gif
Anyway, sounds like a fair grade to me. This first volume is weighted down a bit due to the first episode, but it does get a lot better and it will be interesting to see what the grades will do from here on out. And I'm with you, I like my "manly" anime. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Yeah with all the girly shojo coming out as of late, we really need some more testosterone laden shows to balance out all the estrogen.

Yep definitely gonna get my order ready for Ippo and GITS, two of the series I was most looking forward to this summer, though I'm getting impatient for 7/6 to come for my Ippo!

I didn't like the first episode all that much because there was just not enough context to fill in the details and it was just confusing. However, things really changed with the remaining episodes which were pretty strong and well handled. It was good to see Harry and Brandon as very fallible hotshots, instead of Noir-like invincible gunmen.
I thought it looked fantastic - the character designs are excellent and the animation was great.
Although I watched it subbed, I do listen to dubs, so I just want to praise Geneon for finally listing the English cast alongside the character they play. This has fixed a problem with Bang Zoom! dubs where you just get a list of VAs which you need to play guessing games with. I hope this is going to be the new standard.
This was a blind buy for me, and I think it looks very promising. I'm glad I picked it up.

I didn't want to start a new thread, but I have the disc in my hands right now and it's got the info on the Gungrave releases:
Volume 1 Available 7-6-04
Volume 2 Available 9-28-04
Volume 3 Available 11-09-04
Volume 4 Available 1-18-05
Volume 5 Available Mar-05
Volume 6 Available May-05
Volume 7 Available July-05
So there's two important pieces of info there. The show's going to be released on 7 discs like most of ADV's releases are now. This is a good thing considering it's one less disc than we're used to getting from Geneon. Correct me if my math is wrong, but judging from the fact that the show is 26 episodes long, we should see a 4/4/4/4/4/3/3 episode count for the series. Second, It's going to take a year for the entire show to be released. If we're extremely lucky, we might see something like Funimation and their Kiddy Grade releases being released every 6 weeks or so.
Anyway, I'm going to watch the disc now.

I've been admiring the box since receiving it earlier today, and the anime itself isn't too bad either, gorgeous anamorphic transfer. I wonder how much touching up the animation got for the DVD release, too bad I already deleted the raws and can't compare. Kudos to Geneon for another great box using the R2 artwork. The disc menus are great, another fine piece of work from Nightjar and on par with the cool Texhnolyze menus.
I should get mine from TRSI in a couple of days. It's a blind buy for me, but I feel positive about it because of other peoples' reviews of it. The box looks badass. /images/graemlins/devil.gif

How is the box in person? I usually pass on the boxes unless they're cheaper boxsets or just rock like the Berserk or R.O.D. boxes. Don't really have a need for something that just sits on my shelf, but if it's so stylish it's to die for I don't mind the extra dough.

/images/graemlins/stunned0.gif But...there are only five shoujo series currently being released (Sailormoon (Geneon re-release), Wedding Peach, Hana Yori Dango, Marmalade Boy, and Twelve Kingdoms). *Maybe* six if you count Kaleido Star (it was an orignal anime). Out of, what, about 70 series being released in July alone?
Yep, sure sounds like you need to battle all that estrogen. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
well, I don't mean to hype this series to the point that it all comes crashing down one day, but for all those people buying this series blind, i can assure you it will be one of the best blind buys you will ever buy... lol, whoops, so much for not over-hyping the show... hehehe, a definite positive vote from me, ranks in my top 10 fav shows of all time... getting the same R2 box just escalated my excitement... /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I have to agree with jarhead and ObiKenobi. It does seem as if there's a lot more shoujo released. The list you cite only has current releases. I think we will be seeing more than six titles. And you have to remember that many series have large shoujo elements although not technically classified as such.Get Backers may look like shonen but it's a mixed title, something for everybody.
If you examine releases you will find very little straightforward shonen adventure/drama released recently; there are the ever popular harem anime, shonen romance (often creepy), and the titles that are mostly fanservice. We haven't seen titles like Gungrave of New Fist of the North Star for quite awhile.
But what something is called makes no difference as long as it's something you like. I happen to prefer more shonen titles but will go for the exceptional shoujo title.
My copy of Gungrave is on it's way. I can't wait.

The box isn't super-flashy, but the art and styling fit very well considering the show. The sturdiness is a bonus, and I think the series is good enough that it deserves a box. RightStuf has a decent pic up, but obviously it looks nicer in person. It also helped that I managed to grab the v.1/box from TRSI for $25.19, while BestBuy wants $24.99 for v. 1 alone.

about the dub, I am personally a subtitle purist and never watch anime dubbed, but I am also fair about it... the dub I listened to in a couple scenes of ep 1 for you, I thought it wasn't half bad... voices for the most part match up, and the acting was pretty good... this is coming from someone who doesnt watch dubs so, it is probably better than I'm saying.... hope that helps, if you wanna know any specific questions about anything, PM me... /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

So far, it seems like the show is a blend between Heat Guy J and Berserk. Heat Guy J because of the animation and a little bit of the style and Berserk because of the way the first episodes are set up. This is the best show I've seen in months.

In my own defense, I offer up two feeble excuses:
1) Is something really a spoiler if it is the concept of the entire series, revealed 1/26th of the way into the series and was basically in a video game that came out over a year ago? /images/graemlins/sad.gif
2) What happens and HOW things happen are two different things. Like JAWS. Everyone knows the shark's going to eat people, but its the way in which it is staged that is interesting. Fortunately, both Heat Guy J and Gungrave are not so much about plot twists as they are about the style and staging of the presentation. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
I'm sorry that some folk feel the synopses are spoilers. We really agonize over trying to avoid those things, but we still have to give enough information to tell people what they are buying and to try and interest them... It is a fine line we must tread, and obviously, for some, we've crossed it here. I guess I take it personally since I write so many of them, so I'll just try to do better.

I'm glad that you've commented on this, since having parts of the show spoiled due to the summary has happened to many people. It is always helpful to know that a studio is taking note of something like this. I'm not sure how good of an idea this is, but couldn't you just put the same summary on each volume of the series and provide a general overview? Providing a general overview that tells somebody what the show's about is really all that's needed to entice somebody rather than telling somebody what's going to happen in a specific volume. Either way, I'm glad that you're looking into this.

Unfortunately, that's how the world works. You win some, you lose some. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif /images/graemlins/relief1.gif But I'm surprised that people are bringing this up with Geneon's releases now, when titles such as X, Ai Yori Aoshi, and Last Exile had spoilers posted all over. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
Hey Chad,
Thanks for replying and looking into this. Having stopped reading the DVD summaries for a while now (not just Geneon, but all DVDs), I didn't know what the problem with HGJ was, but I did go check out the summary and I'm assuming that my friend was talking about this line:
Claire leads the revolt against the new dictatorship, but Daisuke and J fight the most dangerous battles: brother versus brother and machine against machines.
Now, I guess the determination of whether that's a spoiler or not determine on what happens, as I haven't seen the episodes. I think he had his own opinions on what was going to happen, and that Dais's brother was going to become the crime boss and the brothers would have to fight each other . So this is all speculation, and in this case I'm not sure if that's spoiler material or not. However, I thought the same thing as my friend.
Anywho, thanks for the response. I have no real ill will or anger against you, just a comment. Keep up the good work! You guys do own probably 80% of my anime purchases for the rest of 2004, so you're doing something right. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Thank you all for the nice responses to my whining.
For HGJ, yes, we went a bit far. We knew we were in trouble when we saw the Jacket cover that Yuuki did and realized it was one huge spoiler. After that, I think I relaxed my standards for the synopsis a bit too much.
As for the general synopsis repeated volume after volume, we seriously considered that (it would sure make my life easier! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif), but we have had so many people tell us that since most retailers don't carry a full series, the only way they can figure out if they have the volume or if they are missing a volume is to read the synopsis. Thus, we try to give a clue or two that would make sense to those who have already seen the episode and exciting sounding words that don't lie about the contents to those who haven't seen it... All in 4-6 lines of text. /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif
Despite my wounded reply, please keep up the useful comments! We can't continuously improve unless you complain a little bit now and then.

hmm.. 4-6 lines of text. I never knew that, as I never paid that much attention to the writings. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif Though it helps me get an idea of what the disc might contain, I usually tend to ignore, forget and start fresh when the DVD starts playing. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey, how about I put some spoilers of my own in? Just for fun, of course. Don't complain if you read them, because I put them in spoiler tags!

There's one in every box; or rather, inside the inner box that takes up the extra space in the artbox itself. Don't throw that away, or you'll have just thrown away your mousepad as well.

The artwork for the box is just wow. Sorry just can't stop drolling over the Yasuhiro Nightow wraparound artwork. Might have to copy fabio's technique and buy two more of these boxes.
I didn't feel like making another topic sodoes anyone know how many volumes the first R2 box for Gungrave holds.

It holds 7 volumes, and is almost exactly the same as the R1 box, except for it has the Victor logo in place of the Pioneer/Geneon logo and there's not that black section on the bottom.

Chris, in your review you mention that all the tracks are 5.1, with the added DTS track. The DVD I received today has the Japanese track listed as 2.0 DD Stereo. Was this a change between a screener copy, or simply an error in your review?

Good point - Chris mentions in his review that

While there doesn't seem to be too much difference between the DD and DTS tracks, the 5.1 mix in general is pretty solid

but according to my disc the only way to compare them would be the Japanese 5.1 DTS vs English 5.1 DD since there's no Japanese 5.1 DD, unless that's the comparison Chris meant. It could be possible that Chris' disc is different and that someone noticed that not having either a 2.0 DD or PCM audio track put the disk out of the DVD spec.

Got mine a couple of days ago, first episode didn't explain a lot, when I watched it a second time, however it occured to me that Harry became the new boss of Millenion and I think he shot Brandon in the opening.
When does the story get back to where the 1st episode left off?

To elaborate, 18 is a retelling of the first episode, with the perspective switched to Grave instead of Mika. It does include new material, and shows how the fight in the very beginning was resolved. I would consider it the "emotional" side of the events that took place in episode one. 19 would be the first episode that is current time and entirely new.

No, it's not. This is already one of my favorite animes just from 4 episodes. Maybe I'm crazy, but I can't get enough of this show and having to wait til' Sep. 28 is perhaps the worst torture conceivable. Thank God Rightstuf ships 1+ weeks early.

There's one in every box; or rather, inside the inner box that takes up the extra space in the artbox itself. Don't throw that away, or you'll have just thrown away your mousepad as well.

I finally got my DVD with the art box today, opened it up. No mouse pad /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif. Anybody else not get the mousepad? Or was I just the lucky one /images/graemlins/depresse.gif

Are you absolutely sure its not in the inner black box? I almost thought I didn't get one but it's incredibly light and somewhat blends in with the inside of the spacer box.

I looked again, moved my hand all around the inside, nothing but air. Oh well, I sent an e-mail to geneon's Stephen Wang. Hope to get a reply soon. Also, is this mouse pad like the Last Exile one?

I almost missed mine too, since it's very light and blends itself with the box. But to answer your question, the size of the mousepad is almost the same as the Last Exile one, except a little shorter (like half a cm or something), and the foam or whatever it's called is not as thick.

Nobody knows. Different companies work... differently. Honestly, I don't know why Geneon takes longer, but yeah, I'm a little peeved at the fact that Geneon takes 2 1/2 months to release 1 disc of Gungrave while it takes Funi 6 weeks for a disc of Kiddy Grade.

ADV has gone to releasing a disc every 6 weeks for pretty much all their titles. Geneon, for some recent titles, has had a 2.5-3 month gap between first and second volumes of a series, and then goes to a standard 2 month gap for the subsequent volumes. Lots of people are having knee-jerk reactions about Geneon suddenly becoming really slow about releasing things (which is both funny and frustrating), but it just seems like it because we're getting a lot of new volume ones from them at the moment.

I think the problem is not so much that of Geneon suddenly becoming slow (although the gaps between vol 1 & 2 seem longer), but that they have stuck to a 2-monthly schedule, as have Bandai. It was ADV, and now Funi, that went to the 6-week releases, so now the others feel slower in comparison.

I also think it's fair to note that the time between the Japanese broadcasts and the R1 DVD release has lessened so much, that in the case of Gungrave and even Last Exile still, the Japanese DVD release is still ongoing.
So, we could complain about the wait killing us, but really, the wait's a lot shorter than it used to be. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Actually, it's worth noting that the extra length of time between 1 and 2 for a few of their releases has a potential common theme; Anime Expo.
THey loaded up surprisingly heavily for their late june and early july release week with special editions and the start of several high profiles series, something you normally spread out. BUT they also had a lot of the creative teams of those shows at anime expo.
And if you have the creators there, you want people to have seen the shows. Or at least have something on hand of YOURS that you can get people to buy and get signed. So I think a few #1's got pushed up a few weeks so they could be ready for AX once the creators got signed on.

I really hope that they don't. I'd definitely rather have a sub only release if it came out quicker, so it'd be a little annoying if it's the dub that's holding things up. Though, I'm sure that that wouldn't be the only issue.
