Are you referring to Chris? He wrote the original reviews of Goldenboy back in 2002.

I'm currently watching it for the first time as well. What a pleasant surprise! I'm so used to the kind of fan service we get with anime produced today. This one really is "golden," and a sure sign they don't make 'em like they used to.
The story is surprisingly engaging and smarter than I thought it would be. Not at all superficial, the gags all come with a dose of intelligence. Well, not all (bounce bounce bounce! /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif )...
What surprised me most was the quality of the animation. WOW! Totally fluid. The CG in OVAs today can't compare with how traditional, hand-drawn animation looks, especially if it's done with care like Golden Boy was. Amazing!

Of course a positive for me, this is great classic stuff...should be part of any collection.
My fave ECCHI episode would have to be the motorcyle one (for obvious reasons for those that know what I am talking about).
But my REAL fave would have to be the last episode because anime doesn't cover the anime industry that well and this episode does it with spades. Plus the anime they were working on is funny as hell! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I love how they cut live action footage of the animator's desks when Keitaro was cleaning it. That was a million times funnier than Animation Runner Kuromi. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
I can't remember which episode it was (I think the one about the noodle shop) where the incorrect credits were used. Was this fixed in the anime essentials version? If so I might ditch my regular copy and "upgrade". /images/graemlins/happy.gif
I loooooooove goldenboy. /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif

Only the first pressings had that error. Later discs had the correct credits for the episode.

Ditto on that we see more titles become AEs. I'm getting really tempted to buy this title. I did the same thing (as others did), I just over looked it (maybe because of the trailer I saw, or the name of the title).

Damn. I was hoping the reversed side would feature the same front cover without the annoying Anime Essentials bar.
For Golden Boy, as well as Cutey Honey, the chapter listings really isn't necessary considering they all have the same amount and same type of chapter stops (OP, Act 1, etc.).
Damn!

This just popped into my head from yesterday night watching the first disc. I noticed they had the "clean ending animation" as an extra. Am I the only one who thinks this is completely pointless since all it is is a blank screen with music playing? I mean there's no animation at all to it.

It's one of the first anime titles I ever saw and remains one of my favorites. There's nothing else like it.
For under $10 I might double dip, since I already own the 2 original DVDs. I guess I'll double-pack the first two discs together... the remaster sounds tempting, but is the 5.1 in English, or Japanese? I can assume that it'd be for English...

5.1 English, 2.0 Japanese, like the other ADV Anime Essential DVDs.

Little do you know, that clean black screen ending had to be painstakingly reconstructed frame by frame because the original black screen ending was lost by the Japanese licensor. Thus it is one of the rarest of extras and proof that ADV loves us with a purity matched only by Michael Jackson's love for 12 year olds.
p.s., the whole thing was a big joke.

Like you, I had been passing on this title for quite a few years, but I finally gave in to the AE rerelease, and I'm glad I did. All of the episodes were fun, but my favorite, for obvious reasons, was the motorcycle one. Hearing the young miss saying "But men who ride motorcycles are the worst" cut me to the quick. I'll race her down that mountain any time.
I do think they missed a gold opportunity at the end, though. <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>They should have allowed all the women to finally catch up with Kintaro and ravage him, just so we could hear him say one last time, "This is so educational!"</span>

No, of course not. (http://www.wrexgrafix.com/anime/aodgallery/pics/martialstax.htm)
The big difference is that no one will spend $20 to watch me ride my bike with Najica panties on my head. On the other hand, it's almost worth $20 per viewing to watch Miss Reiko "ride" her Bimo-chan.

Yeah, although the ending is pure otaku, I thought it fell a little below the standards set by the previous five episodes. Golden Boy deserved a better fate.

By the way, can anyone who owns with the original and remastered versions tell me if the rainbows (especially in the hair and other fine black lines) that marred the original release are still present in this volume? The reviewer says he didn't notice rainbows but I'd like to hear from someone with both. Thanks.

The video still has the rainbowing and dot crawl of the original, as I'm assuming they just used the exact same masters. The major difference is that the encoding is better with a higher bitrate, and I believe they've restored all the original title cards with soft subs. I don't remember if the original dvds were the same way as its been forever since I watched my friend's old dvds.

True, but its funny when they say "Digitally Remastered in 5.1" on the covers, almost leading you to suspect that the video has been remastered too.

One must always keep in mind that the video portion of my reviews must be taken with a grain of salt. I just do not have the eye for spotting these things that others do. Cross coloration I can spot better in live-action material than I can in animation. Things like dot crawl have to be particularly bad for me to notice them while viewing a show.
Best rule of thumb is this; if I say there appears to be a problem, the trained eye will likely hurt while watching it. Otherwise, YMMV. /images/graemlins/happy.gif
