I was watching the 10th Anniversary edition of Ninja Scroll last night, and around the moment of the layer change it locked up on me briefly. At around 69:13, when the layer change occurred, the picture froze horribly between frames and remained like that for about fifteen seconds. I couldn't even fast-forward it at that time, and ended up losing several scenes of action. Here are the exact specs of my system and the playback:

DVD player: Pioneer DV-563A
Side played: Fullscreen
Soundtrack: Japanese DTS-ES 6.1
Error occurred: Chapter 19, at 69:13 or so

I've yet to replay it with any other soundtrack, and I've only played the original fullscreen version of the program. Has anyone else with this disc experienced this? Is it just the configuration I selected, or is there a universal defect regardless of audio? This has never happened with any other disc in my collection, and playback before and after the layer change was perfect otherwise.

I've never heard of this happening before. I'm going to guess that it's your DVD since something like that's happened to me before with a bad disc. It's possible that it's your player, but I seriously doubt that because it's not a cheapo player and it hasn't had any other problems. I'd check out the DVD on a friend's DVD player or something. If you can find anything kind of like the problem you had, then the disc is bad.

Manga Entertainment was known for their attrocious layer changes. Just about every Manga E. dual layered DVD had a poorly placed and excessively long layer change.
