i have been reading (and enjoying) the manga Kare First Love, and am wondering exactly what the title means, i know that Kare is the first part of Kareshi-Boyfriend, but if i'm correct isn't the shi portion refering to the boy (from Danshi), so would i be correct in assuming that a literal translation of Kare First Love, is Friendship/First Love

They're different "shi," actually.

"kare" means "he," and can also in some contexts mean "boyfriend." The "shi" in "kareshi" is the same shi used for Mr./Mrs. and generally has meanings like family/clan name. Together "kareshi" specifically means "boyfriend."

The "dan" in "danshi" means male, and is the same character for otoko. The "shi" in "danshi" is a different character than the one in "kareshi," and is the on-yomi (Chinese-derived reading) of the same character whose kun-yomi (native Japanese reading) is "ko," the character for child.

ç”·å*? - danshi = boy, (otoko + ko = man-child)
彼 - kareshi = boyfriend, (kare + shi = Mr. He /images/graemlins/wink.gif )

The actual Japanese title of your manga is 「彼Firstlove. A literally translation would be something like "'Him': First Love," or "Him - My First Love." Possibly "'Boyfriend': My First Love," too.
