I was wondering: What kinds of punishments are used in Japanese schools? For example, in anime I see students in anime being forced to stand outside while carrying buckets of water. Then also, do teachers physically hit students? This was seen in Aishiteruze Baby, Kodomo no Omocha. (I can hear some of you groaning about how that is fiction but I've had 1st hand experience actually seeing some of these things in other Asian countries). What other punishments are used?

I used to teach in JHS and HS and I've seen a bit but I don't think the bucket thing exists anymore. I've asked teachers about it before and they said they heard of it being done ages ago but not anymore.

Sometimes, kids will get detention. Sometimes, they will have to write an essay of apology/self-reflection (hanseibun). Other times, they will have to clean up an extra amount during clean up time. And yes, teacher unfortunately do hit students. I made many enemies at one school trying to stop this. In fact, one of the teachers (my boss) hit me!

I tried to introduce some American punishments into my classes. For example, I've made kids write standards on the blackboard (like what Bart Simpson does in the Simpsons OP). I was never able to carry this one through but one of my favorite punishments/threats was if they used a mobile phone in my class, I would confiscate it for a day, erase the entire phone/address book, and use it to call my friends in America! Even the tough kids in class gave me props for that one and knew I wasn't kidding so I never had to do this to anyone.

Oppositely, some teachers *never* punish sturents. I would sometimes walk by classes and see kids reading manga, doing make-up, playing games, and so on. I'm sure this comes up in anime and manga as well.
