View Full Version : Art Book Reviews and Recommendations Thread

This is a "focused thread" for Art Book Reviews and Recommendations. If you just picked up a new art book and want to tell us how you liked it, go ahead and do so here. If you have a question on if a particular art book is any good, ask it here. Don't worry about making a "formal review" unless you like to do such things. Just letting us know what you thought about the art book is fine.
Also note that this is not a "one and only thread" -- if you really do want to write a longer review you can start a new thread instead if you like. We just have some Art Book regulars in the forum that like to have these focused threads, but generally art book threads are pretty small so we try to be flexible.
If you just want to know where to buy an art book, the place for that is the Retail Forum. Sometimes that comes up in these threads as an aside, but if that's the only thing you want to know you should go to the right place. Thanks.

My current bid to overextend myself financially has now spread to the artbook realm, and I've got a few nice titles in today. As before, if you see something that you're interested in, just reply here or send me a PM and I'll whip up a nice little summary filled with all sorts of turns of phrase that would make your senior-year English teacher sneeze fire.
If I find myself with an abundance of time to kill, maybe I'll just review them all spontaneously this time. We'll see.
Anyhow, same deal as before (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=2&Number=757245&page=1&view=c ollapsed&sb=5&o=&vc=1):
Format: Series Title (Publisher) ISBN
Synopsis/Vital information
Air Art Works (Paradigm) 4-89490-318-0
Illustrations and concept art from the best-selling bishoujo game "Air". Contains carboard slipcase and an illustration card. (Don't know how else to describe it--it's almost the size of a page from the book proper and is printed on lightweight stock textured to feel like cold-press watercolor paper. The book itself is printed on the traditional varnished artbook stock.) Rated H--don't let Junior get his paws on this one.
224 pages. Full color. Published 2001. ¥3000.
Lunar Legend Tsukihime Seiten (Kadokawa) 4-04-853719-9
Art, character illustrations, episode synopses, and concept sketches for the Shingetsutan Tsukihime anime series. Contains a humorous parody-magazine segment after the end of the book proper (purportedly from "Moontype" magazine, durr hurr hurr).
96 pages, 64 in color. Published 2004. ¥1700.
Nurse Witch Komugi Visual Collection (Gakken) 4-05-402391-6
Megami Magazine strikes again, this time showcasing everyone's favorite magical nurse. For those who haven't seen the series (what are you waiting for?), the included cardboard standee provides a telling glimpse into the sort of individual who would buy this book: the series' namesake appears on one side dressed in a kindergartner's outfit, flashing her undies at the viewer. Contains enough cheesecake to stop the heart of a Clydesdale. Also features a brief cosplay photoshoot starring Momoi Haruko, voice actress for Komugi and former frontwoman for the pop group Under17. Printed on thick paper bordering on cardstock, as is custom for Megami's "Visual Collection" series.
64 pages. Full color. Published 2004. ¥2400.
World's end Premium Collection (Enter Brain) 4-7577-1535-8
Artwork, illustrated stories, and concept sketches related to the game "World's end". Drawn by the genius bishoujo artist Naoto Tenhiro, much of the book follows in the same vein as his "~Oniichan Daisuki~" collections for the Sister Princess games: cute, clean vignettes celebrating the childlike innocence of adorable little girls.
94 pages, 80 in color. Published 2003. ¥980.

Because of my heavy genetic weakness toward cat-girls and cute, the first disk of Taruto had created a need in me to own an artbook for the series, Magical Meow Meow Taruto.
Any recommendations?

Here's (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4894903180) the link to Amazon's listing for the book in question. They've still got a number of copies in stock, so you're in luck if you want to bite. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any English-language shops selling this book. I did find a French store (http://www.nippon-export.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24_25&products_id=9499) that has a picture of the slipcase cover, though.
Edit: And my best efforts to locate the publisher's web site have failed me. My guess is that Paradigm is just another division of Visual Art's, but VA's site has no link, and neither does Key's. The plot thickens... ¬_¬
Got some stuff from Otaku.com today:
Alpha: Kozue Amano Illustration Works
88 pages (pages 1-73 are color)
ISBN 4-86127-009-x
Mag Garden
This is a hardcover collection of mostly color works that comes with a plastic slipcover. The chapter headings: Aria; Roman Club; Crescent Noise; Short Stories; Extra Works; Aqua; and Mocochrome Works. About two-thirds of the book is Aria/Aqua.
The manga covers are presented here in large double page spreads and back page images are given a full page. I haven't seen all of the manga covers, but I suspect the majority of the images come from the manga front and back covers. Having these pictures printed large and on good paper is really nice and I enjoy having large size pictures of these covers. There are some character illustrations as well. I suppose those looking for new images will find the book somewhat disappointing.
The artwork for the other chapters is nice, but not at the same level of dreaminess or just overall quality as the Aria/Aqua pictures.
I liked this purchase. I bought it for large versions of the manga covers and I most definitely got what I wanted. It did leave me wanting more, but I believe there is another artbook coming.
M a Virgin: Katsura Masakazu
65 pages (3-9 color, 10-58 b&w, 61-65 color and title pages are color)
ISBN4-08-782054-8
Shueisha
This is a hardcover collection of erotic comics. The stuff is a little racier than late night Cinemax stuff. The few color pages look great. This was an impulse buy and it was alright, but I probably wouldn't buy it again if I had the chance to do it over. I would however buy a proper artbook from this artist. The women are gorgeous.
Robot vol 1
150+ pages (about 90% in color)
ISBN4-89829-777-3
Wanimagazine
Softcover book. There is a great variety of styles in the book and most of it looks great. Each of the comics is distinct from the other comics in this volume. The only regret I have is as soon as I ordered it, DMP announced they would be releasing it domestically. Definitely recommend picking this up when it gets a domestic release. It's a little edgy. There might be a couple of pages the squemish might not like and there is one auto-erotic comic in there. Quite a bit of cool pictures.

This set is a must have for fans of his.. seriously. There's like 3 books in this set, containing illustrations of I"s, Video Girl Ai, DNA^2, Shadow Lady.. a bunch more. Also interviews, a Shadow Lady manga (man, I wish that was translated!), etc. Expensive, but worth it. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I was wondering if anyone has the Saikano artbook and if its as lovely inside as the cover is.
Plus does anyone know if theres been anything close to a Yuji Shiozaki artbook of sorts?
EDIT: Also is there such a thing as an artbook review site? Sometimes I'd just like to know if what im buying is actually an artbook and not a visual guide to the anime. Take the RE:Cutey Honey and Jinki Extend books for example.

Love Song 2002? Yes it is, but it's not all Saikano; it covers other Takahashi works as well.
As to Yuji Shiozaki, there's the Ikki Tousen Visual Book (isbn 4-8470-1547-9), but's for the anime rather than the manga.

There was a site called weasl.net that use to review artbooks and Megami Magazine issues. It was mainly a wallpaper site but it did have artbooks or vissual collection reviews.
Unfortunately the site seems to be down and i don't know if it will ever be back up. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif
As for your other question, i don't even know who Yuji shiozaki is. Even know the name does sound very familiar.

Perfect /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif Thanks alot for that, now I have the Shin Takahashi artbook on order (it was out of stock at amazon.co.jp /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif), reading certain reviews I also splashed out on a Kenji Tsurata artbook and the Galhound posterbook, those are from Amazon.
Gonna take a chance with shipping and what not and get the Takahashi book from animebooks.com it looks like a nice enough site and I can't seem to find it on any of the webstores that I use.
EDIT: Update = I picked up the Takahashi book from animenation in the end and it was surprsingly cheap aswell. Joy!

My Last Exile Aerial Log arrived from Amazon.co.jp today. I haven’t seen any other impressions as of yet (Maybe I missed them in the 4.0 thread change or am looking in the wrong place) but this seems like the reviews thread so I figure I would write some thoughts about the book.
Last Exile Aerial Log
ISBN: 4844357832
Price 3,200 Yen
First, it is a nice hardcover book printed on really nice thick paper. The first 50 pages are mostly color (6 or so in the middle are pencil sketches though) consisting of the various Newtype spreads and (get this) the American DVD covers. Unfortunately the Region 2 covers are indeed absent from this book. From there we get the character design sketches which mostly seem to come from the Spheres books, and then pages 20-48 consist of color screen caps (Favorite scenes/important moments) revolving around a character/s or a theme of the show. It appears they took this approach as opposed to doing a full episode recap/guide.
From there it turns into a 22 page black and white “Table Talk/interview session w/ a few black and white background sketches thrown in for good measure.
Next comes 15 color pages of the mechanics for the show. The various vanships and battleships are given the main course here and the quality of the 3D models really gets a chance to show off. I recall seeing some of these in a Newtype as well but they looked fairly pixilated and gross. These pages are nice and clear, showing just how much detail was put into these models..
The remaining pages focus on black and white character line art, and again while some of it might be new a lot of it seems to have been taken from the Spheres books. Concluding with a staff and cast listing.
The fold out poster (bi-fold) is a replication of the front cover of the book.
All in all I am pretty pleased w/ the book, though I was really hoping for some nice big pages of the R2 DVD covers. There are some nice clean shots of some of the various backgrounds and flags/symbols used in the show along with a 2 page spread of the artwork that made up the ending animation. The mechanics part was nice to have seeing as I have most of the Spheres books (Curse you Spheres ++) and those concentrate more on the characters of the show it is nice to finally have some good detailed color shots of the 3D models. That and all the Newtype spreads in one book.
If you are a hard core Murata fan looking for new material though, you are kind of out of luck, if you are a Last Exile fan looking for a nice comprehensive art book of the series then you can pick this up and probably not feel like you are missing too much (aside from presentation or collectable value) from the Spheres books.
For me it does a good job of helping to round out my collection. ^^;
If anyone wants some photos (or would like to host some photos) please e-mail me, I’ve got 10 or so shots you can look through.

Anyway, a google on "パラダイãƒ*" produced this (http://www.parabook.co.jp/bookdata/artpack/pack13-18.html) page (link completely unsafe for work, naturally). Nothing special, just page count and pricing data for the book, along with a shot of the slipcase cover.
So the Snow fans get a dedicated page for their art book, while we Air fans are left out in the cold. Heck, if that site is anything to go by, there aren't even any Air H-novels. Now how am I gonna get my Misuzu love? /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Shin Takahashi´s LOVE SONG 2002 is IMO a decent artbook. Some people complained that they tried to cram a lot into it, however I found it amazing how much content and little extras were included in this artbook. As Dave already said, it doesn´t only cover Saishû Heiki Kanojo, however the major part of it, is devoted to this (probably most famous) series by Takahashi. There´s also a section for his other works (incl. an overview of the short ones from Kuroi Tsubasa to Shiro Neko no Koto, etc.), with the major part of this being devoted to Iihito (featuring illustration Takahashi made for Big Comic Spirit, cover illustration for the TV drama´s Soundtrack, etc.). Probably my favorite illustration from LOVE SONG 2002 is the two pages illustration featuring Saikano and Iihito characters and which Takahashi made as "thanks" for the fan support. The firstpress (which I gladly got via Amazon.jp) comes with a CD-ROM containing a LOT of storyboard sketches made for the GONZO TV anime adaption of Saikano, trailers (the same as can be seen on the Official jp site) and some other extras...oh yeah and other firstpress goodies included are a big poster (2 sided) of Chise and Shûji as well as big 3D "card" (it´s the same size as the book) featuring the cover illustration (Chise´s back). Besides the IMO gorgeous Takahashi art, the artbook also contains a "one day of Shin Takahashi and SHIN Presents! work" report, interviews with seiyuu and staff for the TV series (incl. director) as well as a short look on the first three episodes and the production itself plus the final section is sort of a encyclopedia on Saishû Heiki Kanojo with a lot of explanations on scenes/etc. from the series.
If you can still get it and like Takahashi´s art I´d highly recommend it!
It´s only sad that after LOVE SONG 2002 no new artbook for Takahashi has been released yet...but who knows, maybe with the upcoming Another love song OVA we´ll get to see a LOVE SONG 2005? /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif (and if so I´d hope we get to see some illustrations for Kimi no Kakera and maybe the Monthly Greeting Girl Takahashi made for Sunday GX some years ago ^_^).
Hope that helps.

Nope. I know the Fate/stay night Fanbook has nipples, but I can't think offhand of any Tsukihime book that does, not even the encyclopedic Dokuhon. Sorry.
The closest thing to nudity in Seiten is two uses of a small screencap where <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Akiha is about to chomp down on one of the maid's breasts</span>.
There are two nude illos in Colorful Moon Tsukihime: Tsukihime Perfect Fan Book (isbn 4872878442):
1) Len wearing nothing but a big bow in her hair and shackles around her neck and wrists, but she's basically face down with her head towards the bottom of the page
2) full frontal shot of a loli-ish looking Akiha; has nipples, but also a very narrow mosaic over her hairless vulva.

That would've been me (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=906602&page=0&view=co llapsed&sb=5&o=&vc=1)--blame the stealth editing gnomes. Thought I'd gotten the edit up quick enough that no one would catch it.
Anyway, I initially posted that I thought the Plus Period had nudity in it; it is the quintessential reference for the game, after all. Following my usual tradition, I didn't bother to actually check the source until after I had already posted, and found out that the Plus Period is actually clean. The closest we ever get to anything resembling smut is on pages 51 (Ciel in bra and skirt), 60 (Akiha in bra and panties), and the book's two lone nipple shots on page 77 (<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Akiha drinking blood from Kohaku's exposed breast</span> and <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>nude Kohaku post-coitus</span>).
Oh, and here's the Amazon linkage (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4776790378/), just to restore the balance to the Force.

Page 45 of Plus Period (http://www.animeten.com/details.php?productID=C-OHSH-M42C5-4776790378&aku=0) is one of my favorite. The fight scene and the neko Arc are so cute! I am seriously thinking of buying another copy so that I can make use of the one I have now for avatars. If I can get my hands on a Fate/Stay Night book like this I will be really happy. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I've had Plus Period sitting in my Amazon.co.jp cart since it was released, I just keep on finding things I'd rther buy and then running out of cash, next month im sure ill get it...yeah /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
EDIT: I have another request, are there any Yui Toshiki artbooks? I had a good look around and theres nothing that I could really find, most of the websites that I frequent were'nt of much help either. Cheers.

Wel, there's this whole line of "Yui Shop" books (at least 4) of CG work (containing nudity and/or sexual situations), but since I don't own any of them, I'm not certain if these are really "artbooks" or collections of short stories/scenarios.
AnimeTen/AnimeAku just got in vols. 1 & 2 (check their "new items" thread in Retail); they're also available from places like Animaxis:
Volume 1 (http://www.animaxis.com/en/shop/product.asp?pf%5Fid=115497&sku=115497%2D00)

Cheers! I found out that the Yui Shop books are being re-released in smaller formats for a reduced price, I've ordered 1 + 2 from Amazon Japan.
Im a bit behind with this but I got in Kenji Tsurata's varition on a theme artbook "Hita Hita", its short but as always the only way to describe his work is beautiful.
I've been bitten by the Tsurata bug recently, I've just put in orders for another of his artbooks, I think it stems from re-reading Spirit of Wonder again.
Bandai need to release something resembling the R2 Spirit of Wonder box-set including the Miss China figures. I wants it!

Can anyone give any feedback on the Mega Neklo artbook? For around 200 pages its pretty expensive. So what's in side it that makes it worth 2940 yen?

I found a series of art books (?) on Amazon JP it each one seems to focus on a different artist.
There are 6 books total in this series and I was wondering if anyone knows who each book is focused on? Ie what they are known for.
I think the 1st book is on Kou Kawarazima. I was interested in his work and found this series.

You can get these at Borders stores in the US...they are titled "The New Generation of Manga Artists". Look in the artbooks section. Sometimes they put them right next to the How to Draw Manga books. That way, you can flip through them to see if you want them. And they're about $15, for example:

Thanks for the tip - I'll certainly look for these the next time I'm at my local!
The JPEG orgies over in R2 are always fun, so I thought I'd share some images from some artbooks I've received over the past couple of weeks.
First up:
Group shot of all five books. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/group1.jpg)
Along the top are Xeno Emission E1, Last Exile Aerial Log and Gankutsuou Production Book Ver. 1.5. Along the bottom are Xenosaga Episode II The Complete Graphics and Tsukihime Plus Period.
Last Exile Aerial Log and Tsukihime Plus Period have been covered by some of the other posters here, so I'll only go over the other three.
Gankutsuou Production Book Ver. 1.5
This is a doujinshi that I believe was published by Mahiro Maeda who is the creative mastermind (concept, character designs, and direction) behind this excellent show that I expect to see in R1 land within the next year.
Cover (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/gank_00.jpg)
As can be seen here, and in the group shot, the cover is very difficult to photograph. I increased brightness in both so the details would show up more. The cover is black with the lettering and drawing of the Count in shiny gold. Very striking in person.
The book starts off with a short 8-page manga story by Maeda.
Manga (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/gank_01.jpg)
After a couple pages of text (with more gold background designs), ther are 10 pages of character sketches.
Character Sketches (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/gank_02.jpg)
Then we get several pages of storyboards, a couple gag pages, and some text about the staff.
Storyboards (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/gank_03.jpg) (Can't believe they included the storyboard on the right /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif )
Not including covers, this book runs 36 pages and was rather expensive, but over all a very nice package.
Xeno Emission E1
Another doujinshi book, this one from Choco (Mugitani Koichi) who designed Kos-Mos, the A.G.W.S. units and several ships for the video game Xenosaga Episode I.
Cover (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-e1_00.jpg)
The first 32 pages are in color and include several images of the A.G.W.S. units, Kos-Mos, and many other misc. items that weren't included in the game.
A.G.W.S. Unit (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-e1_01.jpg)
Sion [sic] Uzuki with A.G.W.S. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-e1_02.jpg)
Kos-Mos (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-e1_03.jpg)
The remaining 120 pages contain LOTS of B & W sketches of the same type of items along with explanatory text which I can't read. /images/graemlins/sad.gif
Kos-Mos Sketch (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-e1_04.jpg)
This is a good-quality, thick book that I think every Xenosaga fan would enjoy.
Xenosaga Episode II The Complete Graphics
A newly released artbook for the videogame Xenosaga Episode II. (Yes, I like Xenosaga /images/graemlins/tongue.gif ) This book is similar to the Design Materials book that was released for Xenosaga Episode I, but it has a greater emphasis on imagery than on text.
Cover (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-ii-tcg_00.jpg)
Each of the main characters gets a double-page spread.
Shion Uzuki (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-ii-tcg_01.jpg)
Secondary characters and mecha each get a full page.
A.M.W.S. Units (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-ii-tcg_02.jpg)
There is also a color sketch section with characters and mecha.
E.S. Dinah (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-ii-tcg_03.jpg)
Also environments.
First and Second Miltia. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-ii-tcg_04.jpg)
Whats a good artbook without...
Swimsuits! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-ii-tcg_05.jpg)
There are also several pages of promotional artwork.
Promo Art (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-ii-tcg_06.jpg)
Some are just wrong (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/wrong.jpg).
Even a few pages on the CGI models.
Facial Models (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-ii-tcg_07.jpg)
This is a great book for Xenosaga and 3D graphics fans as it's packed with almost 160 pages of full-color, high-quality artwork. Very highly recommended.
If anybody has any questions about these books, feel free to ask away.

I have a friend who's in Japan right now (lucky bastard), but he said if I wanted some stuff to let him know. I already told him to get me Ugetsu Hakua's Flamboyant, so i'm off to a good start. Need some help with some other artbooks i'm looking for:
Kazuya Kuroda - Which artbook has those nice nosebleeding Vandread full color pics? Also what other full color artbooks has Kuroda made that will make me feel lightheaded? Is there one for Chrono Crusade?
Takahiro Kimura - Is there a full color Godannar artbook out?
Oh! Great - What's his best artbook he's put out?
Kazuhiro Takamura - Has he released a Mahoromatic full color artbook? I believe he's done one for KonoMini if i'm not mistaken.
Shinya Hasegawa - I must have a full color, nosebleeding Ikki-Tousen artbook.
I'm looking for any other works Ugetsu Hakua has done as well, I already have iRobot which has his work in it. Any help appreciated.

I mentioned the Tenjou Tenge Animation Book briefly in one of the R2 JPEG Orgy threads. (cover shot) (http://img71.exs.cx/img71/669/tta9at.jpg)
It's your typical animation book with character sketches, storyboards, and episode summaries. There's a greater than usual amount of color art, mostly promotional art from Megami and Dengeki Animaga, promo sheets, the DVD covers, and CD covers. It's only $14, worth it in my opinion. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Only $14 that's not too bad. But most of the art is based of the anime and not the manga correct?

Yeah, anime-styled art throughout. I've come to accept the anime style as it's own thing, because comparing to Oh! great's art (especially the 2005 calendar I have up) is just unfair. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Correct, the anime designs are really nice in places though, especially Aya.
It would say its slightly better than the usualy animation books that I have, theres alot more full page spreads and just artwork in general.

I just came into a little bit of extra money this month and thought it might be a good time to get a hold of some artbooks.
But since i've not got one previously i'm not 100% of what i'm doing.
I was thinking of starting with the artbooks to my faviroute series, Mahoromatic.
I've seen the Visual book for Both seasons available at animenation, but i've no idea whther or not they're any good. Is there anyone who has these visual books who could perhaps tell me how good/bad they are.
I was also hoping to find an artbook for Battle athletes Victory but have had no joy, anyone know where I could find one if one even exists?
Last question, anything I should look our for or know when purchasing artbooks?

I like both Mahoromatic artbooks a lot. And if fanservice is your thing there is certainly a lot of bonus art along those lines in both books.
Battle Athletes Victory (http://www.jpqueen.com/onlineshop/productinfo.asp?PID=14483) - this is the one that I have and it is pretty good. Not enough Tanya, but there was never enough Tanya. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I was wondering if there is any artbook that features color art from Pitaten. Thanks.
I have this Pita-Ten book (http://www.animebooks.com/piil.html). It's full of large color illustrations, a great many of them full page, nice paper too. It's a very nice book with cute artwork. The book is organized into chapters, but I don't know the significance of each chapter. The chapter headings seem to be Latin or something like that. If you are already a fan of the artwork, it is easy to recommend the book. This is my only exposure to Pita-Ten, so anyone just looking for quality cute artwork might also find this good as I do.

if you want Pita-Ten specific art then that book is an absolute must /images/graemlins/happy.gif
if you just want Koge-Donbo's art then i highly recommend the Chocola series of books (find most of them on animegamers website)
Stella: Kozue Amano Illustration Works II
ISBN 4-86127-140-1
Mag Garden
This volume is designed the same way as Alpha, the previous illustration collection. It is a hardcover collection of mostly color works that comes with a plastic slipcover, which has "Stella" printed on the slipcover. What's nice about both volumes is the slip cover is not too snug, so you don't damage the book by slipping it in and out of the cover.
The chapters for this volume are, as follows:
<ul type="square"> Stella, pages 1-16, full page and double page color images from Aria
Roman Club, pages 17-32, all color, but multiple images per page
Crescent Noise, pages 33-66, all color, about half the pages are full color and the other half have multiple images
Short Stories/Extra Works, pages 67-74 all color, various sizes
Aqua, pages 75-88, more full size pictures of the characters that appear in Aria.
Notes.[/list]
The Stella and Aqua chapters are done in the same style as the covers for the Aria manga. The other chapters differ from the Stella and Aqua style, but are similar to one another. These are in an older style where the coloring looks to be done in part with markers and other traditional media. If you've seen or have Alpha, you pretty much know exactly what you're going to get with Stella.
I could have done with a larger chapters with the Aria characters, but all in all I like it, even if the first collection is better.
CLAMP no Kiseki vol 1
Page Count: 32
ISBN: 1-59532-605-7
Tokyopop
With an MSRP of $29.99, it's a little expensive for a 32 page fanbook and three mini-figures that double as chess pieces. Add that you have to do this twelve times, it's a bit expensive for a plastic chess set and a twelve issue CLAMP fanbook. Still, I'm used to spending a silly amount of cash to endulge my fandom.
The interviews and articles were nice as were the showcased images. A chunk of the fanbook is taken up by an overview of Cardcaptor Sakura, including a cover gallery and series highlights. The six page manga exclusive was cute, but nothing special. While the fanbook isn't the most exciting thing about this package for me, it held my interest throughout. The fanbook does not contain anything that made me sit up and take notice, just the little things in the interviews and articles it that made it fun.
The chess pieces (white queen Sakura, white pawn Mokona, black pawn Mokona) look great. They might be a little lighter than I had hoped for, but they won't get blown over in the wind either. The coloring is nice and they appear to be made well. The paint looks like it should be where it should be and the peices I received had no obvious defects. On the bottom of the chess pieces are felt pads, in case you were wondering about that. What's cute too is the chess pieces are labeled on front and back so a player unfamiliar with the set can identify both her and her opponent's pieces.
Basically, the package boils down to $9 for the fanbook and $7 each for three mini-figures. I've bought a few $7 mini-figures and I have to say the apparent quality of these chess pieces easily surpass any $7 mini-figure I've seen before. In all, while I wish the msrp was a little lower, I don't feel like I was ripped-off. Obviously, this is a product that appeals to more than just a casual CLAMP fan, so if you've got room in your manga/anime budget and have a big soft spot for CLAMP stuffs, this isn't a bad pick-up. It's also a target for those Borders coupons I keep getting.

Okama's Hanafuda, not exactly an art books, its a full colour artbook sized manga. There are alot of full page images and the story itself is great, if a bit strange.
Fox-girls /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif
Its a bit left-field compared to some of the other H-suggestions, the art is unique and not really in the bishoujo style.

Howdy. /images/graemlins/happy.gif Anyone here familiar with a GetBackers artbook that's based on the manga character designs?
I saw it at Anime North, but it was a bit pricy for me to pick up sight-unseen, especially since I'm only lukewarm on the manga designs. Just curious if anyone here has it, what the contents are like, and whether you'd recommend it or not?

I guess this would be fairly old news, but for the interested parties, there is now an collection artbook for Stella Deus. ( view here (http://www.animebooks.com/stdechco.html) for cover image )
I managed to pick up Hakua Ugetsu's Works Flamboyant from a local Kinokuniya (SF) last week, and just opened it. Costing around $43 (after taxes), could I say it was worth it? Well, I was purely going by suggestion here from both fabio and Rogueman_8 (both of whom are Bakuten's fans), and from my perspective, it's an okay design artbook. It's more concentrated on Bakuten's Jo and Amy { translation: we NEED more Sei and Maria[/b] /images/graemlins/tongue.gif } , and only a sparse few colored drawings for his original designs (which definitely could have used more). The drawing for Fate/stay Night's Saber, on the other hand, looks really regal, but then again, I'm showing my bias towards the game. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
So what to do now? Well, I'll pretty much end up selling this artbook in the near future. The concept art were nice but Ugetsu's designs somehow looked all the same to me. For some reason, with the exception of the Bakuten girls, almost every single female drawn in the book made me think that they're all rehashes of Jo in different hairdos and costumes.

I received my copy of flamboyant as well the other day from Amazon.jp (they went out of stock and therefore shipped it seperately laterwards for free ^_^). While I do agree with you, that its main focus is Bakuretsu Tenshi it is a great artbook IMO. Sure I would have enjoyed getting more of Ugetsu Hakua´s art aside from Bakuretsu Tenshi with flamboyant as well, but there are his Doujinshi (for a pretty moderate price on YA!J) available for that so I´m not really disappointed by the book. The only thing I wasn´t soo happy about is the case it comes with. I mean if you take the artbook out several times I can imagine that the case will show "signs of usage" pretty soon.
Despite that I am positively impressed by flamboyant and hopefully we´ll see more artbooks of that kind by Hakua soon ^_^

I love the binding on this book. You can open it up to any page and it will lay flat without you having to mess around with the book. Anyone who likes scanning their artbooks will love this since they don't have to break the binding to scan a nice flat image.

Has anyone picked up Maho Shoujo Ai - Groundwork of Ai? If so, how is the quality of the content? Is the Ugetsu Hakua that contributed to the book the same guy as the Burst Angel character designer? Is it graphic? <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Yes I know it's a stupid question because it is Maho Shoujo Ai </span>

I picked it up back in February (http://images.desturel.com/room/picture010.jpg). It's a good book if you follow any of the Maho Shoujo Ai games. It has most of the game artwork for MSA, Plus and 2. Yup, it's the same Hakua that does Bakuretsu Tenshi. Yes it's graphic. Plenty of tentacle action. Not for the overly squimish.

After a bit of advice, I think this would be the best thread for this:
Basically, I'm looking for recommendations on Gothloli artbooks etc.
By the way, this isn't to do with looking for ideas for designs or anything, this is straight up looking for /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif pics /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
I am aware that there are "adult" Gothloli DVDs, mags etc but I wanna see if there are any more "tasteful" ones first.
If that fails, then gimme the X rated recs! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Kos-Mos (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-e1_03.jpg)
The remaining 120 pages contain LOTS of B & W sketches of the same type of items along with explanatory text which I can't read. /images/graemlins/sad.gif
Kos-Mos Sketch (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/gpn/xeno-e1_04.jpg)
This is a good-quality, thick book that I think every Xenosaga fan would enjoy.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm just gonna add some more insights into this book..
Being that I'm an avid Xeno-fan, I'm rating this book very high. It complements the design materials you find in the official Xenosaga Ep. 01 Design Materials book. Although there are a few high-res CG images printed on high-quality glossy paper, it's mostly design materials concentrating on Vector products, particularly the VX-series mechs and KOS-MOS.
The book itself is pretty thick (148-50 pages), and is divided into several sections showcasing the concept art drawn as well as personal notes written by CHOCO (pen name) for the various mechs and KOS-MOS' older "siblings." There is also a listed timeline as to what product was made, with respect to Episode 1's scenario. (KOS-MOS appears to be the last "fully developed" product by the company). In this book also, though unofficially confirmed by the Design Materials, we get the true meaning behind KOS-MOS' name (It's a recursive acronym). There are even concept prototypes of KOS-MOS' outlook and weaponry (among them, a railgun and a different version of the X-buster).
At the end of the book, there are several small advertisements for the Xenosaga game, depicting comical situations between Shion and KOS-MOS (such as Shion taking off KOS-MOS' garter belt or KOS-MOS wearing Shion's graded glasses). /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif I'm not sure if it's just fancied English text but there is a cryptic English/Japanese verse written at the end of the book, while showing (final version) KOS-MOS in human form in pseudo-charcoal sketch.
Btw.. This is the only book where you'll see a good rendition of catgirl KOS-MOS. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif And KOS-MOS' elder sister, VX-4000, drawn by Akechi Muramasa, is ubber cute.
Now time to hunt that Zone of the Enders Visual Book...

Just popping in to mention the artbook for Someday's Dreamers (Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na koto), Dreamers Book. It includes sections devoted to manga/novel artwork, anime artwork, character descriptions & profiles with sketches, episode summaries with thumbnail images, and an interview with the author. There are also the usual mini-profiles of the artist(s) & voice actors scattered throughout as well. On the whole, quite a well-recommended book for fans of the series.

hey chums. while I've been collecting anime merchandise for many yrs now, artbooks are something I've never really started collecting till now. i bought a few EVA photofiles awhile ago but, it was only recently that I started importing artbooks semi-seriously
anyway, they were released awhile ago but, I recently picked up the Uzumaki Naruto artbook and loved it! from there, I ordered the Genshiken fan guide which is really cool btw. It isn't an artbook but, it comes with a couple really nice color images plus Kujibiki Unbalance playing cards.
just today, I received Die Sterne and an Ai Yori Aoshi artbook with a stand up Aoi-chan. as well, i have a Get Backers artbook and Ugetsu Hakua's Flamboyant in transit. for those who know me and the series I like, plz do not hesitate to PM me if you know of artbooks I may wanna buy. you guys are far more knowledgeable than I am so, i would love to learn from ya guys and hopefully pick up more beautifully collections in the future. thx.

well, I just got my My-HiME Destiny Princess artbook/mook and it's great, though i am biased /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif. Anyways, the book is 112 pages, Size B5 (which is a bit smaller than the Idol Book) w/ a clear plastic sleeve protecting the cover. There is 6 new pieces of notable artwork that are exclusive to the book. They feature, Mai, Natsuki, Midori, Mikoto, Nao and Shizuru. The rest of the artwork is from previous publications that i've seen already and are old to me. Some may find them new as they were probably hard to find. These artwork are spread throughout the book and put into 3 gallery sections. The book goes through all the major characters, giving their age, birth, height, weight, blood, constellation and 3 measurments w/ accompanying screencaps from the show. Minor characters are given a bit of info as well, mostly in the Fuka Private School section along w/ main characters. Some of the envrionments are given detail as well. Then there's a HiME & Child section which gives info on the HiME, their element and Child. Then there's some info on Oprhans. Next is advertisements for many thing My:HiME, like the PS2 game, zippos, books, DVDs, etc. There's also a small manga section that is rather amusing. After that it's all production sketches. Those who have the animation mooks and Idol Fanbook will find nothing new here as everything is mostly old stuff. Following the sketches is an Interview w/ producter, Naotake Furusato and Director, Masakazu Ohara. Lastly (aside from the credits), is the Mai-HiME history section which summarizes the anime show.
The book is mostly color until pg.81 for those wondering. So is it worth it? For a My-HiME fan, definitely yes. For a casual fan, yes, cuz you get a nice collection of old artwork as well as 6 new art exclusive to the book. I'd recommend it more than the Fuka Gakuen Idol book if you had to choose between the two. But one obviously can't resist that one either w/ the girls in swimsuits /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif. However, not much is really new for those who already have the other mooks. Anyways, i wuv it being the fanatic/godfather that i am /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif.

Anyway, yes, I do have the first book that I mentioned, the Gundam Fix Illustrated Collection. The book is a collection of fourty-seven prints by Hajime Katoki, each depicting a different mobile suit from the various Gundam series. The prints are all done in a photorealistic style with the help of computer graphics software. In most of the prints, the mobile suits can readily be identified as paintings, distinct from the photographic backgrounds. However, in a couple of the prints, such as the ones for the Blue Destiny, the Physalis, the Nu Gundam, and Gundam Epyon, are so masterfully executed that it's honestly hard to tell where the photograph ends and the painting begins.
Yoshiyuki Tomino himself comments on this photorealism in his (bilingual!) introduction to the book. As a child of the Photochop era, my personal feelings towards photorealistic art may not be as apprehensive as Tomino's, but I can see where his concern comes from regarding the fusion of fantasy and reality through computer graphics. Overall, the introduction is a very well-written piece, and definately influenced my reaction to the art that followed.
Katoki also provides a thoughtful closing passage to the book, where he comments on his art, his inspirations, and the creative process. Like Tomino's introduction, this passage is printed, in its entirety, in both Japanese and English.
Overall, I'd say this is a book that would be of interest not only to Gundam and mecha fans, but to anyone who works with (or appreciates) CG on a regular basis. Highly recommended.
The second, more readily-available book, Hajime Katoki Designs & Products (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4048534211/), I don't own, and know next to nothing about. Sorry.

I get most of my books at Amazon Japan. It's this YamiBou book (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4054025021/qid%3D1122167689/249-4718824-8332324) (AOD referred)if you're interested. Gatts posted some pics a while ago in this post (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=1038025&page=&view=&s b=5&o=&vc=1) but they're off now. However, you can check out tseniv's site (http://www.ea-wannabe.com/goods/4-05-402502-1.htm) and marvel the awesomeness of the book. You can get the HiME Destiny Princess as AJ (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4844358103/qid=1122167818/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_10_2/249-4718824-8332324) (also AOD referred) as well. I took some crappy pics of it in the R2 thread since i don't have decent camera w/ me now.
Anyways, I'm sure other places like Mangaoh and probably Akadot still has 'em.

Did anybody pick up the Samurai Champloo Roman Album (artbook)?
Oniko
07-28-2005, 11:57 AM
I didn't purchase Samurai Champloo artbook, but I did do a quick flip through it while I was at Asahiya. It looks like it's pretty well balanced as far as anime artbooks go. There's a little bit of everything from rough sketches, to line art, to episode caps and character profiles as I recall. (Sorry, I can't say for sure how many pages were devoted to each since I was in a bit of a hurry at the time.) There wasn't a super large section devoted to episode caps, so, in my book, that's a big plus for me. I doubt any fan of the anime would regret the purchase.

Ok, I've been thinking about ordering the Bleach in Bleach book, but before I do so, I would like to know a little more about it. (I've yet to find any review for it online, so I was hoping someone on here would know.) Does it have artwork to it, or is it mostly Japanese text? If anyone out there has this, would you please give me a brief description of the book? Also, if you could give me a percentage of Japanese text and artwork would be great.

It's a fan-guide alright, for those who don't want to invest in the tanks. Its coverage spans from chap. 1 - 152, with some additional reference material of what influenced the making of Bleach and its scenario. Pretty detailed, as there's a chronological timeline of the events, a depiction & description of each character's soul slayer, as well character information (including yet to come in the next few chapters ~170).

Cover minus obi (http://images.desturel.com/artbook/artbooks009.jpg)
Finally an artbook. This one features the artwork of Shunya Yamashita. The tagline is Cute & Funny & Erotic. Well, I believe Yamashita's artstyle is more "Sexy & Stylish & Erotic", but I'm not going to argue over this point. The artwork is great and the binding on the book is great as well. Lots of Dragons/Lizards and women. Even a few demons and men in armor. Mostly fantasy drawings, but all very well done and the layout allows each illustration it's own page.

NAS-O Illustration Works (http://images.desturel.com/artbook/artbooks014.jpg)
As you can probably guess from the cover, a bishoujo artbook. Extremely detailed CG artwork in the later half of the book with two page spreads. There are some hand drawings and water colors as well, but this one is mostly CG of the ulta shiny variety.
For this section, the pictures are mostly ecchi, but I avoided the hardcore section.

This one is the image collection to the the game Shining Force, but the real draw is Tony artwork. The dust cover has nice holographic snowflakes and the under image is full color as well in case you do want to remove the dust jacket. This has an interview with Tony and the game's producer, character sketches, storyboards, line drawings, character art, promotional art, level design and everything else you can want out of a game visual collection. It's also a bargain to pick it up.

I own the Full Metal Alchemist art book. It's really nice with the book being almost entirely full color artwork. There's very little text to the book (added bonus there) and also has full pages dedicated to images instead of cramming multiple images into a single page. It is entirely for the manga, so if you enjoy the artwork in that, I can't see you going wrong with this art book.

I guess Kaishaku is the name of the group/team that made Kannazuki no Miko. Based on the info for em at Anime News Network they are Hitoshi Ota and Terumasa Shichinohe.
They also did Steel Angel Kurumi, Magical Meow Meow Taruto & UFO Princess Valkyrie. So they have done the art for several shows I like. Still I cant seem to find an Art Book for Kaishaku.
Is there an illustration/art book for their various works instead?

The Air movie book is less an art book than a guide book really. But quite a nice one. There's a big fold out poster of the cover art (which for once, actually gives you space to cut out the poster without damaging it), then it starts off with about 10 pages of art pieces, then goes into a character guide (with the standard character designs (in color) and screen shots, though both Misuzu and Kanna get a larger art piece), a story guide and segment on background art which both feature large screenshots, and then a couple of pages of merchandise. Thus ends the color half of the book. There's another insert at the midpoint of an alternate DVD cover (again featuring the book's coverart) for the movie DVD.
The black and white half of the book (which unlike some books I've seen (Gankutsuou I'm looking at you), is *not* printed on lower quality paper, has what looks like extensive notes from the director, the character designer (who apparently did some work on Tutu?), the script writer, the art director, and the composer, liberaly laced with a few story board pages, genga reproductions, large amounts of black and white character settings, what looks like at least a portion of the script, a short story, black and white background sketches, the typical staff and cast list, and the lyrics and basic music sheet (melody only) for "If Dreams Came True". Though not all in that particular order.

Cardstock color covers though. You'll like it if you are a fan of his designs. Not familiar with the anime. But I like Gotoh's stuff so I get all his stuff if I can.

As with Kiddy Grade, the character designer was actually Megumi Kadonosono, but Gotoh did the storyboards etc.

I actually find I like Megumi Kadonosono's character designs even more that Gotoh's, even though they are quite similiar.

I prefer the way Megumi K draws mouths if nothing else.

Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito Visual Collection
I love the binding on this book. You can open it up to any page and it will lay flat without you having to mess around with the book. Anyone who likes scanning their artbooks will love this since they don't have to break the binding to scan a nice flat image.

I just bought the Yami to Boushi to Hono no Tabibito book. BEST ANIME ARTBOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!! So many yummy /images/graemlins/shy00000.gif pictures and I love the standee too. Did they touch up on the screenshots by the way? I've seen the TV series and I certainly don't recall seeing any nipples.

I saw these anime artbooks in my local store:
NieA_7
Haibane Renmei
Are they worth getting? The NieA_7 seems cheaper also than the other artbooks in the store.

Has anyone else purchased this? For roughly 2800 yen, this is the best artbook for the value that I believe I've ever gotten. Full Color, 324 Pages! The complete works of Yoshizaki Mine (Keroro Gunso) from 1994-2004. Also comes with a cute standee. I knew his girls in Keroro were cute (and busty) but I had no idea just how much he loved drawing cute (and busty) girls. Only read one volume of Keroro so I just thought he was a children's manga author or something, but he's got some risque pictures in here.
I've included a few sample images, but the quality isn't so great since it's just from my digicam.

Unless it's just me, but I swear those girls and their positions are more or less a nod to other artists' characters.

I like the art in the HR one a lot. And although I like Niea and don't regret buying. I wouldn't ranks it as one of the better art books.

There's actually only a few pics of the Keroro Gunso characters. Most of the book is from his doujin, magazine and game works. It's a great book. Some parts are even in english. If there's anything bad to say about it it's that it is on the small side(A5) for an artbook. But at 300+ pages you can't complain.

I don't know much about Saiyuki myself, so I'm looking for recommendations. If you had to choose one of the Salty Dog Saiyuki artbooks, which one would it be?

Must you choose only one? Very tough decision. Here's some info on the contents of each artbook:
Salty Dog I: All Saiyuki, mostly card collection and calander images, cd drama packaging, mag color pages
Salty Dog II: Mostly Saiyuki images, lots of special ZERO-SUM illustrations (for the mag, cards, calenders, etc.), contains the covers she did for the Saiyuki DVD release, also a bunch of BUS GAMER illustrations
Salty Dog III: All Saiyuki, ZERO-SUM illustrations for the mag and other special promo stuff, contains the covers from the Saiyuki takubon manga releases(v1-9), Saiyuki RELOAD DVD covers, covers for the Saiyuki RELOAD anime guides
Each of them also has a collage of her sketches for various illustrations contained in the book.
I really can't just pick one, but hopefully you'll be able to narrow it down /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif
