I know several of the dvd's they released had glitches. I was gonna wait out until a dvd box comes along but I found the first 3 volumes used and grabbed them. Now I have to figure out if my discs are bad and how do I get them replaced by ADV. I checked AoD's Glitch page but only info for disc 1 is there.

So what discs are affected?

What problems should I be looking for?

What has been fixed?

What kind of exhcnage program is ADV using? Do I have to send the disc back, do they send me an envelope first etc.?

I figure it will be good to have all this info in one thread as opposed to several. Maybe a mod will pin it for others as well. Many thanks for any help

The only disc that was officially 'glitched' was Vol 1:

1. There is some missing dub dialogue.
2. Some of the background speech (Japanese audio) is not subtitled, but this may have been a deliberate design decision. Though they were originally subtitled in the previous R1 versions.

When I exchanged my Vol 1., I basically sent ADV an e-mail through the form on their website asking to exchange my disc for these reasons. They sent me a mailer to return the original disc. The new disc showed up in the mail some time later.

The fixed version corrects the missing dub dialogue, but not the 'missing' subtitles.

ADV are aware (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=883375&page=&view=&sb =5&o=&vc=1) that the subtitles were missing. The impression I get is that they chose not to restore them deliberately, on the dub-fixed release, for whatever reason.

It is not screen clutter, as some other posters have thought. The missing subtitles were for the only dialogue being spoken, and as you said, they were on ADV's original DVDs. Unfortunately ADV versions sub-licensed to other regions will carry the same imperfect versions.

Missing subtitles are what bootlegs have, & should not be on a big commercial company's flagship series, especially its launch volume (ditto spelling errors generally).

Apart from a few smaller segments, all other volumes have both background & foreground dialogue subtitling as on the originals.
A fully subtitled volume 1 would make Eva Platinum, well, 90% perfect.

Can you make a case using specific examples, showing that the missing subs are relevant to the show, and not meaningless background chatter or jargon spewing? Maybe you covered it before, but I missed it.

The parts that are subbed sometimes lends insight, such as the radio chatter in the car about the "oral stage" in psychiatry or psychology, in the episode with "oral stage" in the title. But that part is subbed.

On the original discs, the subs read "The demolition of block B3 has been completed, all personnel must turn in their reports." (or something to that effect)

The main complaint seems to be is that at the time, it is the *only* speech. It might not be important, but it's right there in the foreground.

To me, the most relevant occurance of 'missing' subtitles was in Episode 5, time 05:21 to 05:33.

Yes, this audio is 'technical jargon spewing' that does not advance the plot or provide relevant information, but it still should have been subbed. Here is why:

The scenes shown on the screen are just a pan across some static images with no movement at all. The picture shows a forested area, and it's clear that an Eva crashed into the ground there. There are no visual cues at all that indicate whether or not the audio provides information about the what we're seeing. There is no other spoken audio at all.

That's why, regardless of what the unsubbed voice actually says, it is important to have it subbed. It's the most prominent audio in the scene. Otherwise the viewer will be saying, "What the heck is going on? Where are the subs? This could be important!"

It is not acceptable for viewers to switch to the dub version for 12 seconds because the dub version isn't a crutch for sub viewers any more than the sub version is a crutch for dub viewers.

My personal opinion is that without the information indicating that the audio isn't important, the subs are incomplete. Not providing subs for the only speech in a scene is insufficient, and sends the message that some part of the show isn't important for the sub viewers who bought the DVD, even though it was important enough for the dub viewers, the original TV audiences or for people who bought the VHS. If there was something like (voice on loudspeaker in the background) or similar, I could accept it.

Note for other readers: This is the audio in Episode 5, time 05:21 to 05:33, that I mentioned in my previous post.

So the missing subtitles were actually not included by ADV's choice then? Or was it an error that they then chose not to rectify?

Only the people who worked on the series for ADV would know for sure.

My personal opinion is that it was a deliberate design decision as opposed to some sort of oversight or omission.

As the subs were on ADV's original DVD version (& before that VHS), its an oversight they did not care enough about to correct at the same time as their dub glitch.

My original Glitch forum post has details, and also details of unsubtitled hospital corridor scene in episode 2 here (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=689805&page=1&view=co llapsed&sb=5&o=&vc=1) , with Shinji standing silently during which a loudspeaker announcement is made. Again it is the only dialogue.

Mine took 46 business days between my sending it by UPS and receiving the replacement. Though the Christmas season probably slowed things down, as I sent it in November and received the replacement in January.
