What are some recommended shops in Japan to go visit? Stores for video games, electronics and DVD's?

I'm also extremely interested in a shop that sells anime cels. Anyone know of any? I'm looking for a lot of 80's and early 90's series, think I'll have a hard time finding any?

For cels....would have no clue other than if you knew some Japanese animators....most animators keep cels to trade with other animators. But I don't know about whether or not there would be a store specifically for cels.

As for shopping....ya gotta go along Chuo Dori street in Akihabara for your electronic goodies. But be careful about the electric voltage chart cuz what works in Japan might not work in USA. So check that out before you buy.

If you are in the Shinjuku area check out Yodobashi Camera, Bic Camera, and Sakuraya for electronic goodies although I would not miss out on the other shopping in the area....there's lots of it. And if ya wanna check out the red light district at Kabukicho. grin.

Shibuya and Harajuku area are more for the younger teenager crowd of shopping but definitely worth checking out especially on Sundays. buahaha.

Oh, and if ya wanna check out the Ferris wheel that is depicted in the Inuyasha ending theme song....I think it was the first theme song...I forget...one of them had a fricken ferris wheel....but it's in Odaiba in Palette Town

hope this helps

The best place to go for anime cels that I know of in Tokyo is the Nakano Shopping Arcade, adjacent to Shinjuku. To get there, enter the covered arcade on the north side of JR Nakano station It's really close to the station and not that hard to find. It has a lot of anime/cosplay/toy shops in one mall (second and third floors). Two of the shops there are devoted to just animation cels.

Mandarake Henya
Nakano 5-52-15, Nakano Broadway 4F

If you go to this Mandarake in Nakano the cels have their own store on the third floor (if I remember correctly) so keep exploring since there is more than one Mandarake store in this mall.

Also in the same arcade is another great store just for cels:

Anime World Star
Nakano 5-52-15, Nakano Broadway 3F
03-3386-0231
http://www.anime-world-star.com/

If you are in Shibuya, the Mandarake there has cels too but don't remember there being as many as in Nakano.
(Directions to find this store are on the website, and it has a ton of great stuff. just looking around is a treat since there is a lot of vintage memorabilia)

Akihabara has tons of great anime shops but I don't remember seeing any cels there.

Hope this also helps

When I was in the Mandarake store last year, the only decent cels they had (meaning, those priced more than 100yen) were in locked display cases because they were currently up for auction on their website. The Anime World Star shop had tons of cels, but make sure and write down in Japanese the names of the series you are interested in (if you can't read/speak it of course), as everything was in huge boxes, nothing was written in english, and the people working in the shop don't speak engligh.

I think there's also a Mandarake in Shibuya that has some cels, though not a huge amount. Most of the cels for sale in Mandarake's stores (not auction cels) are lower quality cels from less popular series, but a little searching can provide good results if you're willing. I don't know if it's still open, but there was another cel store in Nakano Broadway too called "Commit" (they used to have more than one storefront, but consolidated a couple of years ago at Nakano). Unfortunately, one of the best shops in Nakano, Zero, closed down a couple of years ago. If you go during Takarajima (http://www.youyou.co.jp/takara/e_tokyo.htm) you can find cels there - a lot of dealers go to Takarajima to buy, but you can still get some good deals there. That's where I got most of my Bonobono cels, and several nice backgrounded LoGH cels and Ryu Knight cels.

Is this only on May 5?

For now, yes. They have it a couple of times a year, I think there's another big one usually in November. It's an event at Tokyo Big Sight. Definitely worth going to if you're going to be in Tokyo while it's happening.

Edit: if you look at the Japanese page, it looks like they're having some other event in Nagoya on 5/29
