Whereas some publishers have chosen to edit artwork, others have wisely chosen to release potentially controversial manga with the art in its original uncensored form. And that is something I think should be acknowledged and commended.

There are specific rules for posting to this thread. Please read.

Please list any series that you recommend because the original art could have been a target for editing in translation but the publisher chose wisely by releasing the manga art in its original form. Each series will get one post in this thread explaining why. Change the subject line to read "Company: Series"; for example, you could write "Del Rey: Negima" as the subject line.

This is only for series without edits to art for the purposes of censorship. For the purpose of this thread we aren't worried about translation, name change or sound effects issues.

In the post itself briefly explain what about the series might have put it under risk for censorship. Write briefly on what the company did do to address the fact that the manga might be controversial. Did they shrink wrap it? Give it a more adult rating? Or what? Please, note if the series is finished and thus safe from art based edits or ongoing so the situation may change.

So just do one post per series, one changed subject line, a description of the issue. Moderators will remove any post that doesn't fit in with the mission statement here. If this thread becomes a problem, then the experiment will be failed, this thread locked and abandoned.

Questions or otherwise should go to Forum and Site Feedback.

Berserk is a very dark series with violent rape and plenty of nudity. Dark Horse has given this title a 18+ rating and snrinkwrapped it. However this is an ongoing series and there is more controversial subject matter later on so this may change.

Lots of graphic violence and a few sex scenes, with nipples, that is all left intact with the appropriate M rating. Recent volumes have been shrinkwrapped even with a Parental Advisory sticker. Bravo Viz.

Digital Manga Publishing presented Desire, a 1-volume (completed) yaoi title, unedited, much to the relief of yaoi fans.

Desire could have been a candidate for censoring due to the explicit nature/sexual content of the male-male relationship. Instead, DMP wisely chose to shrinkwrap this title, attach an appropriate "Mature Audience" age rating, as well as include an advisory warning label.

Passion is a 2-volume yaoi title. Volume 1 was unedited, the second should be arriving in stores soon.

Like Desire, Passion features an explicit sexual male-male relationship, this time between a teacher and student. Like all of their yaoi series books, DMP shrinkwrapped this title, attached an appropriate "Mature Audience" age rating, and included an advisory warning label.

AW Productions (Media Blasters' manga division) released the 1-volume yaoi title Skyscrapers of OZ unedited.

Manhwa. On-going, multiple volume fantasy epic. Labeled 16+.

Hard and bloody violence, rape, sex, non-gratuitous male and female nudity. One scene of inferred bestiality (mystical context).

Of note, this title was charged as pornographic in Korea for its graphic and colorful depiction of Korean mythology, and its author, Hyun Se Lee, charged for producing it under obscenity laws. His eventual acquittal, in Lee's words, "...demonstrated that Manhwa was classified as a legitimate form of mass media."

Dance Till Tomorrow featured very candid sex scenes, with both male and female full frontal nudity. The mangaka joked in his freetalks about being forced to censor himself by his Japanese editor, but I'm glad VIZ didn't do any censoring here.

By the same author as Flowers & Bees. Written for a different audience (josei as opposed to seinen) there is less deliberate fan service but there is still plenty of full nudity (no genitalia) and sex (including oral sex and lesbianism).

A hilarious satire of the 'I want a man' mindset, this is a truly adult work for intelligent writing and not just 'naughty bits' (though it certainly has those).

Published with a M rating and warning of explicit content.

Del Rey - Negima!

(Hey, nobody else mentioned it)

Like other Akamatsu works, this series contains a huge amount of underaged nudity and associated situations. Originally slated to be edited, but after fan reaction, Del Rey, to their eternal credit, decided to release it unedited, shrinkwrapped, warning-stickered, and rated "OT" (16+).

Volumes 3 through 5 of Paradise Kiss all contain varying degrees of nudity, sex scenes, nipples, etc.

I have the original editions of the series (the purple books), and I'm almost positive my volumes 1-3 are rated Teen (13+) and 4-5 are rated Older Teen (16+). Tokyopop's website now lists the new editions as all being rated 16+.

A three volume series that depicts heavy violance and at least one instance of nudity involving an elementary school age character. What makes the series controversial is that despite its rather violant content, the artwork is quite cutesy and most of the characters are of elementary school age. CPM has left the title unedited and un-shrink wrapped, appropriately marketing the series to the 16+ demographic.

Has an extended lesbian sex scene with blood and realistic slurping effects (worth buying for this scene alone). /images/graemlins/shy00000.gif /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
Oh...and there are multiple mutilations and lots of severed limbs. Not to mention a scene where a girl is injured (very painfully) in the crotch.

This series probably has the most extreme content being published in English barring actual hentai. On the violence side, it has detailed beheadings, dismemberment, evisceration, and torture. On the sex side it has plenty of detailed nudity (no genitalia, but detail includes pubic hair) and sex scenes. And it combines the two on a regular basis as well.

Tokyopop is publishing uncut with shrink-wrapping and an M rating.

Through the first several volumes I could not have recommended this title (while respecting the fact that Tokyopop was publishing it unedited) because of what appeared to be unfocused and confusing story-telling. However, by volume 3, the initial confusion begins to resolve into an intriguing story with complex underpinnings. If you enjoy Berserk, Hellsing and Saiyuki and are 18+ there are good odds you'll enjoy this series--if you give it several volumes.

The Lupin manga has a lots and lots of fanservice (boobie shots and whatnot), violence (mostly comedic violence), many sexual situations (including a door to a treasure that will only open if Lupin was able to give a girl an orgasm inside of a machine that measures the intensity of the sexual climax), and full frontal nudity (boobs, genitalia originally drawn as the male and female symbols).

The Lupin manga is about 360 degrees different from its anime counterpart in terms of controversial situations, yet Tokyopop left it intact, released it un-shrink-wrapped with an OT rating (16+).

-Original series (14 volumes) fully released.
-World's Most Wanted series has 5 out of 17 volumes released.
-You do not need to read the first manga series prior to reading the second. I personally prefer the second one to the first.

Hard yaoi; has very explicit sex scenes involving men, full frontal nudity, all completely uncensored , actually the English release of this title is more uncensored then the Japanese one since there are no cones of light or anything obstructing the genitals (they are present in the Japanese book). DramaQueen “uncensored“ and released this book with a Mature 18+ warning on the back cover. I am not sure if it’s wrapped as I got it online.

This is a historical/political espionage thriller set within the last 4 decades. Main character is a mercenery assassin that travels the globe. Most of the violence comes from the supporting cast for each story but the scenes can be graphic.

Collection of short BL stories. Most of the stories are deep in fantasy and almost have a fairy tale feel to them. However, the last two chapters is a high school boy-boy romance.

The level of graphic nudity and sex depended on how feminine the uke character was. So in the fantasy stories, the receiver dressed in women's clothes, seemed to have cleavage when clothed, had long hair and make up, there is very little detail to the sex with these characters. Moreover we hardly saw them naked (and when you do boy are they boney).

On the other hand the high school romance's characters were obviously males and their scene had the most detail in the entire book.

Male partial nudity and sex.

Rate 18+, shrinkwrapped and parental advisory on the front cover

Scanning the list, I was surprised not to see this one listed.

Detective series set in Japan, features a female detective paired with an introverted genius. Their cases have involved porn rings, prostitution, and all of the stories have involved some element of sex or violence. There's quite a bit of fanservice thrown in, in the form of the main character.

Despite VIZ's discomfort in showing nipples in their shonen titles, they are less shy when it comes to the girls. Comedy about a high school boy in the wrong place at the wrong time which usually gets him labeled as the school pervert. Well maybe getting wood at inopportune times helps his nickname along.

The nipples are unchanged in volume 5, even though Viz has been known to edit that content from similar T+ titles in a similar fashion. There's even a reference to 9/11 which remains intact, even though the chapter is not necessarily flattering to our war PR. There should be four more volumes to go, though.
