In Summary:
With several fights spread across the four episodes, some of them overlapping, we get plenty of action throughout it and it maintains the same kind of look and feel as the previous fights. Recca's not a series known for fantastic animation but it's one that continues to have me eagerly watching it even though this is something like the fourth time I've seen it, a real rarity for me. This particular arc sets up a few of the basic premises that will follow into later episodes and provides the necessary motivations to go forward and does it while wrapping it around some fun fight sequences that showcase some neat creativity when it comes to weapons and characters.

Kureno: do you mean Kurei, or his flame Kurenai?
What makes you believe that the next disc will show Recca's team having gotten anymore of a beatdown than they already did at the end of Vol 3?

Why DID they make Kurei's flame blue in the anime? It's clearly red in the color pics from the manga. They didn't think it was EEEEEE-VIL enough?

For the same reason they made the chakra in Naruto blue even though it is clearly suppossed to be Yellow?
I dunno, Studio Pierrot seems to like pointless changes.

Pierrot's reason, to paraphrase Spaceballs, "Blue will always triumph, because red is dumb."

Mr. Chris:
Being a bit of a Recca's Flame fan(atic) myself, I hope you won't mind my pointing out a couple of minor errors in your review:
1. "modogus"
Actually spelled "madogu" and is both singular and plural without the "s". The Viz manga seems to prefer substituting the word(s) "talisman(s)", although it occassionally uses the word "madogu".
2. "...because Domon hasn't really got anything going for him other than his own strength and skills whereas everyone else is using a mogodus or some other tool."
Domon does have a madogu: the Ring of Dosei [Saturn], which is now his nose ring, gives the user superhuman strength. In the anime he accepts it from Kagehoshi because she's so insistent. In the manga, she makes the swap without his knowledge. He just has trouble using it consistently since, having only received it right before the rescue mission, he is not used to it as Fuko is with Fujin and and Mikagami is with Ensui. It works well for him against Sekio when Fuko gets hurt, but it seems to fail him in Koganei's room with the descending wall. This inconsistency does seem to make him the weak link in Team Recca.

I think the Dosei's Ring strength comes and goes according to Domon's will power and his desire to win. He seems to get much stronger later on in the manga as he gets more confident in himeself, he DID

He DOES seem very weak at first, and that's even brought up in the series, but later on he soon manages to carry his weight in the team, which everyone even notes in the Noroi fight

Opps I'm always bad with names /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif ya it's Kurei. Hey it's already established that Kurei is one of the big honchos, definately the biggest in the mansion. And since this is typical shonen fare the heroes need to get beaten down early in order to get stronger later /images/graemlins/wink.gif That and I also read the manga /images/graemlins/happy.gif

In the last episode on Vol 3 Team Recca is on the receiving end of a devastating beatdown by Kurei, and at the very end of the episode, Recca removes his tekko [arm guard] and unseals his true power.
If you remember from the manga, then, once Recca has unleashed his true power [which he did at the end of Vol 3 of the anime] it's Kurei that gets beaten down. His flame Kurenai is a pilot light compared to even just one of the Eight Flame Dragons of Yamata that are the source of Recca's flame. After that, having rescued both Yanagi and Tatesako-sensei, Team Recca leaves the mansion as the victors.

Correctamundo, Ritchie.
And then they both have a blow out as Recca is pushed back into the elevator. Then they go at it again, and then Kurei reveals Kurenai. He has Kurenai use her "Wings of Flame" to turn the the room into swiss cheese. Then Domon and Fuko get so scared they can't move. Kurei then decides to punish Ganko, permanently, for betraying him, so he orders Kurenai to kill her. Domon, who was holding her, tries to help, but he is basically frozen with fear. As the flame heads towards her, Recca jumps in and counters, his flame even more powerful than before, and makes a speech ending with how he's not afraid of Kurei and isn't afraid to die fighting him. Domon and Fuko get inspired and attack, and Mikagami shows up and attacks as well. They decide that since they can't kill a flame, they have to take out the flame wielder. All four go after Kurei. He tells Kurenai that she can hunt one of them. She goes after Recca and grabs him in a total body hold. Everyone else gets taken out buy Kurei as he both strokes his own ego and tells them that Kurenai went after Recca because he's the strongest of them. Thinking they're all down for the count, Kurei is ready to torch the room, but Recca stands up and says the match isn't over yet. Kurei doesn't understand how Recca could have survived Kurenai's flames. Kagehoshi finally appears and reminds him that a flame wielder has an incredibly high tolerance to heat and flame. She wants everyone to retreat, but she sees Recca is ready to die, so she tells Recca to remove his tekko [arm guard] and unseal his true power. As his true power begins to manifest, the episode, and the disc, ends.
SPOILER from Vol 4: Once Recca has unleashed his true power, it's Kurei that gets beaten down. His flame, Kurenai, is a pilot light compared to even just one of the Eight Flame Dragons of Yamata that are the source of Recca's flame. After that, having rescued both Yanagi and Tatesako-sensei, Team Recca leaves the mansion as the victors.

But (last few episode spoilers) Kurenai isn't really Kurei's true power, right? In the final fight during the tournament, he releases his 'true' power (holy flame, or something like that). From what I remember, Kurei withdrew, not because he was beaten but because he wanted to give Recca a chance to learn to control his powers so they could have a 'real' fight. If Kurei had used his true powers during that fight, with the lack of control Recca had over his dragons, Recca wouldn't have stood a chance.

Well, it's been YEARS since I've seen the anime, but I'm pretty sure in the manga that:
After getting his ass whipped by the dragons, Kurei just smiles and goes "I'll get you next time." Or something like that. I'll have to check
Last few episode spoilers: And I don't remember anything in the manga about his "Holy Flame" or anything like that. As far as I know, Kurenai IS Kurei's true power

That may be. I haven't read that far in the manga yet.
By the way, terrific web page. Fuuko's my third favorite character, after Recca and Yanagi. I really like Kagero, too. I love the way Fuuko talks in the third-person a lot.

I guess you're not old enough to remember "Happy Days" and its 2 main characters: Ritchie Cunningham and Arthur Fonzarelli [Fonzie or more often "The Fonz"]. The Fonz's character was responsible for a lot of "cool-isms" back-ina-day.
