View Full Version : Is it Licensed? How many volumes? Ask the GN Comparison Chart! - RETIRED
Kiril
05-11-2005, 01:01 PM
Two common questions that come up in this forum are "Is this title licensed yet?" and "How many volumes is this title?" All of the information (and more!) is compiled into one handy resource: the Graphic Novel Comparison Chart (http://www.animeondvd.com/specials/manga/compcharts.php)!
The Graphic Novel Comparison Chart is designed to serve as a resource for people buying US published graphic novels of Japanese manga, Korean manhwa, and Chinese manhua. The main intent is to provide a list of titles that are both published and have completed their publishing run while listing how many volumes there are in the US run and noting how many there are in the Japanese (or Korean or Chinese as appropriate) run.
There is a lot of information in the chart, and some things may be out of date. In addition, we frequently get news of new titles being licensed. This thread is for all updates to the GN Comparison Chart.
For those wanting to help out, just check out the chart and let us know when something needs to be added or changed. We'd like to make sure that the information there is as complete and correct as possible. There are three general areas of information that need to be checked.
1) Title Additions and Corrections: Please let us know if there are missing titles, incorrect titles, etc.
2) Volume Information: Please check that the Orig Count and US Count are correct. One concern is that many titles are still ongoing in their original release, and we specify that by including a + symbol. Also, any US release that was stopped before completion should have a - symbol. If any of our current information is incomplete or incorrect please let us know.
3) Current Series: In addtion to all of the above, it is useful know which series are still in translation progress. We're indicating this by including a * symbol next to the US Count if translation is still in progress. Did we catch them all or is there something missing?
And of course, any corrections not covered by the above categories are appreciated.

Not finished, still running in the magazine (about volume 9 or 10 or so currently). It's one of the most popular titles currently so I think it will be long. And judging from where I left of in book 4, there's a lot of things coming storywise.
I'm almost sure Beauty is the Beast ended at vol 4.

Two new Fanfare additions:
First one, Japan, looks like a short story anthology from Japanese and it looks like mostly French creators. No volume count. (Bunch of people from Moyoko Anno to Taiyo Matsumoto to Jiro Taniguchi in this one.) Probably no single original publisher.
Vague Terrain from Hideji Oda is the other. No volume count. Can't find any information on it, but going by his other listed work, Kakusen and COO no Sekai, Afternoon is probably the original publisher.
Also, the asterisks can be removed from Blue and The Walking Man, one-shots both.

No, it's not! "Vague Terrain" is a project Hideji Oda draws exclusively for Ponent Mon and Casterman (although Oda did confirm that a Japanese edition will be published afterwards; the tentative Japanese title will be "Yume no akichi"). It's supposed to be a continuation of "Coo's World" (the third volume that was rumored to be in preparation for years, Andrew C. could probably confirm this /images/graemlins/happy.gif).

Does anybody know if the Ouran High School Host Club is really completed in Japan? I know that the manga comparison said that it is 5 volumes long but from Animaxis.com they listed 5 volumes and the info on Volume 5 gave me the impression that the manga's story is incomplete and cancelled in Japan.

thanks for clearing that up.
i don't mean to be rude but please check references. the animaxis references have been a mixed blessing and those tend to give me a good chunk of my problems on this thread. please counter-check, I usually can do so myself but I also want to trust that the info you guys kindly give me is correct. so please, unless its a japanese reference, either dont mention where you get the info (cause then i will be forced to look) or two american references.

Jiro Taniguchi's Harukana no Machi E ("A Distant Neighborhood") has been licensed by Ponent Mon/Fanfare.
They mention it this ad for "the times of Botchan" that appeared on page 129 of the Comics Journal Issue 269. (and I assume elsewhere too?) There is no mention of it at their website though...
[ QUOTE ]
Taniguchi is much acclaimed in his native Japan and Fanfare/Ponent Mon are most pleased to be bringing his works into English and Spanish so he can be recognized in the West for the versatile and truly talented creator he is!

Also, wouldn't it be better to delete the entry for "3x3 Eyes (resized)"? IIRC it was established beyond reasonable doubt by now that the new edition is not going to happen.

Hopefully this is the correct thread in which to ask this question.
How many volumes of the Fullmetal Alchemist novels have been released in Japan? Are they still being written?
I'm not actually sure what the Comparison Chart's policy on novels is, to be honest. Slayers is listed under Tokyopop, but Socrates in Love isn't listed under Viz, for example. (Well, there is a mostly blank entry for it, but I think that's for the manga.) There are categories for manga, manhwa, and manhua, but not novels.
I'd like to see novels added, as it appears that more and more will be published here, and it's useful to have a reference for them like we do manga, but ultimately that decision should be up to the maintainters and mods.

I just noticed there is no listing for Eternity, which I believe would be classified as a manhwa under the forum rules. Looks like at least 5 volumes and published by Daiwon I.C. - though I'm only guessing this as it was published in the same magazine as One according to TP.
(Edit: Probably a bad guess on publisher as it seems to be talking about a different series than what Tokyopop is publishing under the title "One").

It's finished. (Well, I'm sure D.J. Milky at least would have loved to see it continue, but the run is definitely over, with the arc that started in book 1 brought to a close, and the end that's there I thought was pretty good.)

Just thought I'd ask here:
Which Wild Rock is by BLU? The one listed under "Tokyopop" or "other"? (If it's "other," I think Wild Rock is now complete at 1 volume, so the asterick is no longer needed.)
I noticed that some of the BLU (Shout Out Loud!, Shinobu) are listed as Tokyopop, and some (Gorgeous Carat, Love Mode, Earthian) are listed as other.
I couldn't find the listings for two from BLU: Menkui! and Man's Best Friend.

Missing DMP titles:

*Dear Myself 1 volume (don't know if they've licensed the sequel World's End)
*Hybrid Child 1

Yup, volume 1 comes out in September, and volume 2 is in I think December with Tsuki no Shippo 1.
The calendar also lists something called "Shojo Beat Manga Artist Academy" for October, which I assume is that "how to draw" book they've been running in the magazine.
Tokyopop has added 2 more books by Reiko Momochi to their Confidential Confessions line up. It is her Deai series, 2 volumes long. She has released other stuff after that so I'm quite sure its finished.
I bought it once, didn't feel like reading it and gave it to a friend but I'll probably check out the english edition instead.
