Hi all! I know I'm new here, but searched the forums and didn't see anything regarding the Anime Weekend Atlanta XI occurring September 23-25, 2005. It's at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel on the NW side of Atlanta.

Lots of great people scheduled to be there. Here is their homepage in case anyone is interested:

http://www.awa-con.com/

They have a formal ball the Friday night of the convention, which is held in a 32000+ sq ft ballroom at the Cobb Galleria Center (which is connected to the waverly hotel). Never been to something like that - but it sounds like it could be fun.

They also will have a 72000+ sq ft dealers room.

I'll be going (this will only be my 2nd con - went to Kunicon Atlanta back over Memorial day and it was a blast) and my wife and I are driving about 5 hours or so from SC to make the con. We should get Thursday night for pre-reg and then take off on Monday morning.

I also wanted to see if any of the fine ppl from AoD were planning on going and wanted to have some sort of get together during the con. Granted, we want to make sure we don't want to miss anybody's favorite con attraction. So if anybody wants to do this - ideas for meeting times would be welcome once AWA posts their official schedule/times for their events.

Think I've rambled on enough here for now.

Peace! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

-Kevin.

Hi!!! Kathy here -- aka Mrs. kmw_12 -- and personally, I'm looking forward to meeting Jessica Boone!!! She was, of course, the voice of Chiyo-chan in Azumanga Daioh, my all-time favorite anime.

And do let us know if you're planning on going; we'd love to meet you!!!

I've gone to every AWA for the past four or five years and this year won't be any different. The people there are really nice, the atmosphere is great, I have lots of friends to meet, and it's always a great time. I hope to see some of you around and I wouldn't be against an informal meeting.

I dunno... think I might go. Who knows... :p

If I do go, guess I'll be expecting to see the Go Nagai mech festival return that Saturday. ^_^

ah-ha! You beat me to it! Yes, I'm looking forward to this VERY much. Last year was technically my first even though I was only there for half a day. I sat in at the ADV panel which was quite cool. Aaaaand, I met Christine Auten. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Really good guests lined up this year: Yoko Ishida, Greg Ayres (GREG!), Luci Christian, Vic Mignogna, and Monica Rial to name a few.

Can't wait. I'll be there for the WHOLE thing this year! (Especially since the con is only 5 miles from my house)

Yah. She was gracious enough to sign my Vol. 1 of Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 (http://snoochyboochy.com/journal/september2004/autograph.jpg). We talked for a bit right after the ADV panel and was tickled that I had the BGC:2040 DVD. Priss was her first main role and one of her favorites. Christine is very sweet and friendly. It would be cool to run into her again this year. I took 2 pictures with my crappy cameraphone. They didn't turn out that great, which is why this year I'm armed with a new Nokia 7610 - Megapixel cameraphone with built in video recorder. /images/graemlins/devil.gif Beware.

Hey just wanted to note a couple things. The con hotel is now sold out (not sure about overlow hotels), pre-reg will be ending in a couple weeks, and the guest list has expanded in the past few weeks. Check out all info on the con website, and hope to see you there. Peace.

I'll be going for my first time this year (my first con also ^^;; ). I'll be going with a friend of mine that came last year. I can't wait. Not sure what to do. Not going to have a lot of money to spend there, but I'm thinking of cosplaying. Don't have much for that either, but whatever I do, just going to have some fun. It'll be the first time in about three years since I've been crossed the county lines. ^^;; I wanted to go to the ball, but my friend seemed kind of against it. To formal for him I guess.

And if anyone wants to meet, sounds like fun. ^^ Have plenty of time to arrange stuff.

I just confirmed my reservation and will be attending AWA! A had a couple quick questions, if someone could field them... This isn't my first con, but will be my first con in Atlanta and my first time going to Atlanta. I was able to get a room at one of the Overflow Hotels. How close is "walking distance" from the Waverly? Also how safe is Atlanta? For example, For those who have been there, how would you feel walking back to your hotel say 1-2am by yourself? Just curious. Thanks!

08-25-2005, 05:38 PM
That area of town, Smyrna, is actually a suburb north of downtown Atlanta. It's resonably safe.Tthough with two malls and a major highway intersection nearby, you'll want to watch yourself when crossing the streets. There is a bridge over the major road that separates the two malls / facilities. Which hotel are you staying in?

Gotcha, cool thanks! I'm staying at the Sheraton. Another question if someone could answer. How big is this con? People wise? 10,000, less/more. Thanks for your help

Dude, I wouldn't worry too much about safety. I went to college in downtown Atlanta at GSU and would often stagger back to the dorms at 2 or 3 AM. AWA is being held on the perimeter of Atlanta. Basically it's on the outskirts and is pretty much just shopping centers and hotels. No sweat.

Hey, I'm just getting back to school and am still recovering from otakon, but I'm already getting ready to go down to Atlanta. I'm going down to meet up with some friends, but I'm going to be going to the con - no question. I'm looking forward to meeting Jessica Boone. I've heard some good stuff about her. And she looks cute on the Gravion DVD's interviews,

Wow - All the way from the Middle of NJ - that's awesome. Jessica is a very nice person - though also very busy as she is currently going to college and performing in various theatre groups around Houston, in addition to her VA work for ADV.

I also cannot to wait to meet her in person, but she has been extremely pleasant and patient in her e-mails.

This should really be blast!

Peace all.

I'm going! I don't think I'm going today though, as my gloves and my staff for my costume aren't finished. (Jeeze, even with all the hours and hours of slave-labour I've put into this costume, none of it has been finished on time according to the little schedual I worked out for myself.)
I'm deffinetly going tomorrow and most likely on Sunday though!

I'll be the Tsukasa from .hack//SIGN that has background music and glows in the dark if anyone wants to stalk me.

Hope everyone had fun. I know I did...although, some of my pictures that I took don't show at all. @_@ No clue...but my pic with KaW is not saved...I'm sad. :/

Oh well...got some decent goods. (http://home.comcast.net/~miichan/AWA_Goods.jpg) at least. ^^

And if you recieved candy from guy in a suite and tie...I hope you enjoyed it. ^^

Edit- Am I to be mistaken that we don't have discussion about the con AFTERWARDs? I ask since no one has posted here yet, and the rules seem to specify to post convention reports.

Btw, I had to extract everything manualy. Seems the program for my camera sucks. I found my picture with KaW (http://home.comcast.net/~miichan/Bill_Kawl.jpg) . I'm the one in the suit . ^^;;

And it is over. Yay!

As far as cons go this one floats towards the "good" end of the spectrum. I had an awesome time. Met up with some friends, made some new ones, emptied my wallet in the dealer's room. All in all very good.

But I am still wiped out from the whole thing, so I'll talk more after I wake up from my coma.

Uh, to clarify, I'm like a gay guy that is not femenine, but I'm actually female. Haven't had that surgery yet. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif My friends can tell you that I might as well be male. Actually, my friend's little sister apparently thinks I am a boy, so my friend and I are just going to let her believe that.
/images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif It's going to be so funny in a few years when she asks her mom if a male friend can spend the night.... "No, he can't spend the night because he's a boy." "But (name deleated) spends the night with Jessica!" "Honey, (name) is a girl...." "WHAT?!"

Heh, and at the con, most people thought I was a guy. Not so many realised I'm female. Apparently I hug femeninly though, as that's how one person was able to tell. o_O I hug the same ways that some of my male friends hug me though, so does that mean that they hug like girls? But Ein and girly don't mix.... /images/graemlins/knowital.gif

Cute, eh? Thanks! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif You're not so bad, yourself.... /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Woah, I didn't realise that my mints showed up through my pocket like that. I thought it was a little more opaque.... I suppose I'll have to double-line it in the future....

Not sure if this counts as news or not, but I caught a few minutes of the Production I.G. panel on Saturday. The panelist (whose name escapes me) showed clips of some of their most recent shows (Negima and IGPX, most prominently) and gave away DVDs of Ghost in The Shell. The part that intrigued me was following the IGPX footage (an impressive looking all-CG series for Cartoon Network about a group of people who race robots), she gave a listing of voice actors, which the audience responded favorably to. They include

lead character: Haley Joel Osmet (The Sixth Sense)
female lead: Michelle Rodriguez (Lost)
racing coach: Lance Henriksen (Alien, Millemmium)
main villain: Mark Hamill (Star Wars, Batman animated series)

Well, I was wearing a bra I made that makes my breasts smaller and firmer, so it's not like they were squishy or anything. I think she was also at a height where they wouldn't be easily noticed by hugging in the position we hugged in if I remember correctly. (That part is kind of a blur since everyone loved on me and gave me tons of hugs.)
She said it was because females hug tighter than males do. Apparently she's never gotten hugged by my friend Ein. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I kinda figured someone would post a more industry-oriented con report, but I'll go ahead.

As usual, AWA didn't have a ton of industry panels or Q&As. Bandai and Media Blasters had booths and were selling DVDs; there was an Anime Network booth (promotional only) and a Funimation booth both promoting titles and raffling prizes. Hirameki was there giving out Hirameki fans to people, which were very useful since it seemed the AC wasn't working too well on Friday. CPM didn't come; AnimEigo didn't come (2 years in a row now). AnimeNation ws moving, so I wasn't surprised there weren't there. Yet the huge dealer's room was still packed, so yay.

I was eating dinner at 7 so I missed the Geneon panel. I don't know if they even had one. They didn't have a booth.

According to the schedule there was supposed to be an Bandai panel but instead there was a IG Productions panel. I didn't stay because I someone to meet.

I attended the ADV panel and took notes.

* Matt Greenfield canceled due to some business "down under" so running the panel was David Lance Williams and some female VAs for ADV.

* There was a lot of promotion for Anime Network.

* Someone asked if ADV would release anime episodes for download (as in like a pay-per-download service). Williams said he thinks more anime will become available online for legal download, but it's hard to get permission from the Japanese. (Seems consistent with what other companies have said.)

* Williams - The decision to show the edited TV broadcast version of Gantz was made by Anime Network, not ADV.

* Williams confirmed that the 4th volume of Elfen Lied WILL NOT contain the 14th episode (which is an OVA on R2 DVD volume 7). As to any possible future ADV release of episode 14, Williams said he could neither confirm nor deny. Williams (incorrectly) stated that the 14th episode featured mostly animation from the TV series and some new footage, but a member of the audience said episode 14 is not a recap episode and Williams said like the person had said - episode 14 is not a recap episode - into the mic.

* Someone asked if AN was leaving Comcast because AN's programming On Demand was gone. Williams replied that there was a contractual issue and that AN is not leaving Comcast, and AN is talking to Dish Network.

* In reply to an audience question, Williams said there are no plans to move the dubbing studio from Houston.

* Williams said Kaleido Star New Wings Vol 3 was being dubbed, that the series was delayed due to "production issues" (don't know what exactly he meant), and that Vol 1 would be out in the start of 2006. Confirmed ADV has 52 episodes (which would be 51 episodes + the OVA.) A VA said that anything beyond that would have to be made first.

* I had wanted to ask how many DVDs of various series had sold, but there were so many people I didn't get called on.

* Someone asked if ADV would release the rest of the VHS only titles on DVD. Williams said that to release a back catalogue title it would have to "make sense." He also mentioned some titles' ownership [in Japan] are in question and the licensor would have to be tracked down.

-I could have missed something but I don't think there were new titles announced.

I agreed with the person in the audience, the ova ep is NOT a recap, but it DOES reuse footage from the series itself with added new footage. Now I have not personally sat down and compared it, just going by that the Japanese have informed us about the episode.

I have watched the episode twice and recall no reused video footage to any significant degree (flashback with audio during an original scene but not reused video footage) I could be wrong, but I think your licensor may have given you faulty information.

Badly worded sentence. My apologies. I meant that you said the wait between Vol 6 and New Wings was due to production issues, I think. My notes aren't in front of me right now and I don't recall specifically what the "production issues" referred to.

What exactly were the production issues? I'm curious because there wasn't time to clarify at the con.

You know, I know this is a pretty useless plea, but is there any way to get your questions answered at an ADV panel without having to do something crazy to get the panelists' attention? I was holding my hand up for a good 35 minutes straight and people who would put up stupid signs and do crazy crap were getting their questions answered, and I never did get asked. I mean I know there are a lot of people and there's no easy answer to any of this, but I was really annoyed this time as people who put stupid signs that said "Pick Me" and such got their silly questions answered quickly.

Just a small peeve of mine from AWA.

Well, you could try cornering one of the reps afterwards. Worked for me at Kamikazecon in March, and I ended up getting probably a much more frank and lengthy answer than I'd have gotten if I'd asked in the panel.

Sorry bout that. I know how frustrating it can be. I wish I had time to answer everyone's questions during the panels but never had enough time. I try to cover as much of the room as I can during the panel as I want to give as many people as I can a chance. One suggestion would be to either join in in the "stage rush" at the end of the panel. I always end up answering a ton of questions after the panel is over from people who didn't get picked. Of course sometimes people want to catch some other panel so can't do that. In that case I also suggest grabbing me at other times during the con or before/after one of the other panels I do. I always try to make mayself available around a con for people to come up and ask questions, give input or just say hi.

Or you could just ask me here and I'll try and answer as best I can. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Do you really want more people to "stage rush". I've been to cons and seen how some of you guys get mobbed afterwards. Do you really want to encourage that? /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

I'm now suddenly not remembering what your "L" stands for. Sorry. Was it not Lance? Is Lance a Funimation guy? Brain hurts.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's ok, just thought it was funny. Yeah Lance is the Funi rep. For the record, the "L" is for Louis. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

I have watched the episode twice and recall no reused video footage to any significant degree (flashback with audio during an original scene but not reused video footage) I could be wrong, but I think your licensor may have given you faulty information.

[/ QUOTE ]

Possibly, like I said I haven't seen it myself yet to compare. I'll have to dig further into it.

[/ QUOTE ]

To be honest I don't actually recall what the exact issue was with it at the moment. I'd have to go back and check. Either way, it's on it's way now and on track so people will get it soon. I'll probably do some torrent promos for it soon to help spark interest in it. (http://bt.advfilms.com)

On a side note, I heard you were at Metrocon this year too. Seriously, you should come up and introduce yourself some time. Despite our past "exchanges", I'd actually love to meet you and sit down and chat sometime. I promise not to bite. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

It is neither Lance nor Luke.

When the Suck Bunny got its own registration card at Sakura-Con 2005, I rushed the stage at the end... to get a photo of it. dlw was being mobbed and I think he thought I was going to steal his mascot /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

Hey, DLW, got a question I'd meant to ask you at AWA. Does ADV Films have the rights to the Gatchaman compilation movie and will they release it as part of the box sets? Thanks and good to see you (briefly) again. ^^

If you would be so kind as to check and report back here, I'd certainly appreciate it.

Unfortunately, I didn't go to Metrocon this year. Hm... actually, I don't even know where Metrocon is. I did go to MTAC (bad con, but I got some good albeit overpriced artbooks and a very funny SD Gaara and Sasuke cell phone strap) , Animazement, and AWA.

Curious now from whom did you hear I was at Metrocon? You can PM me the name if you don't want to make it public. I'm not doing to seek revenge or punish whoever said so. I'm just wondering where that came from because I never had any intentions of going to Metrocon or mentioned it.

But sure, if we're both alive and at the same place (I may be in Japan next AWA), let's meet at a con and talk. I'll buy you a drink, with alcohol in it even! As long as you promise not to bite, have me ejected from the con, learn my name and face for the purpose of retribution, or otherwise commit life-altering harm to me, I gladly accept! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

We've had "exchanges" (love those quotation marks) in the past but I think we've become different people: I don't passionately accuse you of ^#&%$#^%$#ing the $&%^@*ing &%#$, and you use the conditional tense more. /images/graemlins/happy.gif I think we hold more mutual respect for each other than we did in the past and that's good.

Ah my mistake. I don't really recall where I heard that, or even if I had... just seemed to have some recollection of it was all. I think it might have been based on some posting in the forums giving me that impression. Oh well, no big deal. I've never made it to MTAC though many friends have and it's been a long time since I went to an Animazement, though Janice was there briefly in a completely unofficial manner this year.

Deal. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif I of course hit lots of cons throughout the year so maybe we'll hit a different one if not AWA next year.
