In the August 2005 issue, chapter 42, they added a candle into the hand of a character in one panel (removing a cigarrete from the character's mouth), and changed a cigarette into a candle in two panels (he was caught "setting off firecrackers /images/graemlins/depresse.gif ) Though editing is not new for Viz's translation of Hikaru no Go, IIRC, it was only in the GN release of the series previously. Well, this is only to be expected with the magazine - but thought some people might like to know that about the edits.

What is the point of doing that anyway? It's too bad it is editted.
They want kids to think smoking candles is cooler than cigarettes.

That blows, I absolutely just love this manga too /images/graemlins/depresse.gif

Well, it's still a really good manga and one of the best in SJ, so it won't stop me from continuing with SJ. It is a little disappointing but nothing like Tenjho Tenge.
Good to know about though. I think this is the second or third edit for HnG right?
At least they're being consistent. Every case involves the same character, who is underage, with a lit cigarette. I don't like it, VIZ should have just upped the age rating and kept the cigarettes. But I can understand why they're doing this.

This is disappointing to hear.
So if VIZ is being consistent, how many more times in the twenty plus volumes is he shown smoking?
Thanks for the heads up, Yashiro.

I would think throwing lit firecrackers at people is worse than smoking...

The edits are ridiculous, but we'll continue to buy Hikaru. What's really annoying is the long wait between volumes.

Same here! I can live with it. It's funny though, I was waiting for boom. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I believe it's the second time so far. The first one was when the kid puts out a smoke on a Go board. Viz changed it to a piece of gum.

I don't think there'll be anymore underage smoking after this. There'll be adults smoking, but VIZ shouldn't have to edit that.

Thanks for the heads up, but I guess I'm one who doesn't mind the edits. The series is about Go so if they don't take away from that and I'm able to enjoy the games then that's fine.

evil edits...oh well, that's why I'm buying the Japanese tanks along with the domestic graphic novels /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

I don't mind the edits that much. This policy effects maybe three to five panels in the entire series when it comes to editing, hardly worth getting worked up about in my opinion.

Yeah, this was the only other part of the series that I feared editing for. Alas, poor Kaga, gone from shogi playing bad-ass to a "darn gum-chewing brat" .... /images/graemlins/depresse.gif
Okay, at least a firecracker is more "bad boy" than *gum* ... it's still just plain lame. What really sucks supremely though is that it occurs in the magazine - my last shred of love for VIZ on this one was that at least the mag version was ok.... damn.
My poor Hikaru no Go.... /images/graemlins/depresse.gif

The heck? Even HnG isn't safe? Sure it's minor, but... WHY!? And it's also edited in GN form you say? Just... wow. What is wrong with the manga industry?
I can't wait for some kid to blow their brains out by chewing on a firecracker, then Viz can get sued for harmful censorship >_>

This isn't the first time. Back in the beginning of the story, Kaga was smoking a cig and put it out on a go board that Tsutsui and Hikaru were using. In the mag -- a Teen rating -- it was left unedited, but in the GN -- rated A for all ages -- it was changed to gum, and the corresponding dialogue altered to fit ("he put out his dirty gum on the go board!!"). This time it's a firecracker... and it made the mag, too. /images/graemlins/relief1.gif

Man I think that's part of what gets me... so much of this shit is just SO PETTY. Why even bother to edit such minor, pointless things?

I don't think that's supposed to be a candle. I think that's intended to be a firecracker itself. (I mean why light a candle just to light a firecracker?)
Good lord, these edits get more absurd all the time. Why is playing with firecrackers considered safer than smoking?

Depicting the use of alcohol or tobacco would probably force them to change the rating to something more mature, which would probably be contrary to reaching their target audience.
Yes, it is stupid and petty, but then so are people.

Well then why is the magazine rated T for teen?
Alcohol and/or tobacco usage & mild violence get a manga a "teen" rating, according to VIZ. If they want an all-ages GN, then that's what they have to do, but for the segment in a teen-rated magazine, it's unnecessary. I think this is more a case of laziness - they don't want to go to the trouble of leaving it in one publication and then editing for the second.

It's actually rated T? OK, I agree that these edits make no sense.
