I'm just watching the first disc of Piano and I was wondering if the automatic subtitle track choice might not work properly.

My player, a Pioneer DV-545, is set to japanese audio and english subtitles. When I went into the Setup menu of the disc it already chose "Japanese audio with english subtitles" but when I played the disc there were no subs for the dialogue. After I switched from the english subs track 1 to track 2 it worked perfect.

Is it just a poor choice of subtitle tracks (making the first one not containing the dialogue subs) that made that happen or might this be a real problem in authoring?

This option isn't read by quite a few DVDs properly, so it isn't RightStuf that is always like this. I have this set on my JVC XV-SA602SL DVD player, and it works pretty well, but there are sometimes where the disc doesn't read the option, which seems to occur on older DVDs, so RightStuf might not have equipment that can do that for their DVDs

That's strange. I don't have Piano, but all of my TRSI discs (aside from Tylor) automatically default to Japanese w/ subtitles. Doesn't matter what my player presets are.
