View Full Version : AOD Most Wanted Manga Part IV Updated to reflect recent finds and Someday's Dreamers license

Here's the new thread as requested, nice and squeaky clean! And yes, I still am going off of the results from the last thread, so anytime you update your list, please update from that. I'll also have the last thread in my favorites and all its info saved if it you still need it after it "drops off."

The Rules: (credit to HelSchadenfreude)

* List your top 10 manga series that you want in the US, regardless of company. Just pretend that the company you want got it. If you don't have 10, that's fine, list what you can. Give them a rank of 1 - 10 if you can.
* 10pts will be assigned to the #1 vote on down to 1pt to the #10 vote.
* If you don't rank your series listed, then each vote will get 5.5 points (5.5 / 10).
* List each series only once. Listing things over and over, will give the series only 5.5 or 10 points.
* If you list a series that is currently licensed, please revise your list before I make changes.
* Rankings will be updated periodically below. Scores below 5.5 will not be ranked.
* If you want to update your listing PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE YOUR ORIGINAL POST. Actually post your originals, and then your updated results. It's fine if you only posted 1-4 and they remained the same, and then you post 6-9 ranks that you thought of.

<font color="purple"> Recent major finds on Amazon (take those as you will, but I'm taking them off for now): Skip Beat, Yakitake Japan </font>

Forgot about Vinland, must add to list.

1. Touch
2. Ashita No Joe
3. Vinland Saga
4. Katsu!
5. Stopper Busujima
6. I'll (CKBC)
7. Ahiru No Sora
8. Yawara
9. MAJOR
10. Rookies

Someone requested summaries, so I'll do some quickies:

Touch - If you haven't experience Adachi Mitsuru's baseball masterpiece, you are missing out. Fans of Maison Ikkoku and KOR would eat this up like hot, sweet cinnamon bread pudding.

Ashita No Joe - Gritty boxing story about a man who's down on his luck and is in trouble with the law, fights back through boxing to get his life in order. Put boxing anime/manga on the map.

Vinland Saga - Creator of Planetes does vikings. Enough said.

Katsu! - Adachi Mitsuru's newest titles about boxing. Like all his other titles, very similar in a lot of ways but he is a master of manga.

Stopper Busujima - THe creator of BECK does a baseball story very rich in Japanese professional baseball. Awesome artwork and hilarious.

I'll/CKBC - The OVA is put out by Media Blasters. Basketball story about friendship and rivalries. The OVA really impressed me with some things and I want to read the story really bad.

Ahiru No Sora - From what I've read of the first volume, feels like I'll/CKBC as well as something like Whistle!. A little kid with huge basketball talent resurrects a basketball team at school.

Yawara - About a fashionable judo girl who's always pressured by her gramps to become a judo master, but she just wants to be a girl! Naoki Urasawa before he got all dark and twisted. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Major - Follows a boy through a tragic childhood all the way up to becoming a player in the MLB. Great story and a good anime adaptation.

Rookies - Think GTO meets baseball with AWESOME rubbery, exaggerated artwork. This needs to come out here now!

I don't believe I contributed to the other thread...

1. Kimagure Orange Road
2. Maria-sama ga Miteru
3. Code Name wa Sailor V
4. Read or Die
5. Haibane Renmei doujinshi
6. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
7. Bakuretsu Tenshi (Hey, it's short, fluffy AND a tie-in possibility)
8. Touch
9. New Pet Shop of Horrors
10. Battle Athletes (yes, yes, highly improbable and unmarketable. It's an desired afterthought. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif )

10) Coup d'tat Club (are you there DelRey?)
9) GREEN (yoohoo DelRey)
8) Sakura Diaries
7) Kimagure Orange Road
6) I'll
5) Yoiko
4) Buckets de Gohan
3) Gokusen
2) Azumi
1) Addicted to Curry

10. Seinen manga about a high school espionage club. If there is something weird going on at school or in the neighborhood, quite likely the Coup d'tat Club is behind it.

9. Josei manga from the mangaka of Nodame Cantabile. It is the story of a young woman that wants to get swept away from the bustle of the city, to the country where she can settle down with a rooted in nature kinda guy.

8. skip
7. skip
6. read Jarhead's take

5. Controversial seinen manga of an elementary school 10-year-old with the boom-boom body of a 17-year-old. Lots of potty humor. Lots of full frontal nudity (with body hair!!). And a dash of the mangaka's favorite passtime... Japanese Pro-Wrestling!!

4. Seinen satire comedy covering topics like employment issues, union issues, dating co-workers, gay issues, inter-racial marriage and adoption. But all of the characters (except management) are zoo animals. (They live in their own towns underground and outside of town... there are trains that take them to and from work at the zoo /images/graemlins/happy.gif ).

3. skip

2. Seinen period ninja drama. A wonderful drama filled with characters from japanese history. Female ninja Azumi has must continue to fulfill the mission her clan has been given. One by one the rest of her clan dies and eventually Azumi is the only one left to battle the armies to prevent war from erupting.

1. Seinen manga about the beauty of curry in its many forms. Curry cook-offs, curry to change the mood, curry just to eat. Real curry recipes with each volume. Really seinen though, lots of cooking and /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif fanservice (not your standard cooking manga)

2. Read or Die
3. Read or Dream
4. Code Name wa Sailor V
5. Busou Renkin
6. Yakitate Japan!
7. Addicted to Curry
8. Kimagure Orange Road
9. Ichigo 100%
10. Rose of Versailles

Summaries - Really, only one title hasn't been adequately covered by an existing summary

Slayers: Knight of the Aqualord: This is the third alternate take on the series after the events of Slayers NEXT (or novels 7-8 and manga 7-8.) It's a 6-volume series that just finished its serialization a few months ago. Like in Slayers TRY, Lina and Gourry travel beyond the Mazoku barrier to explore new lands and run into Lyos, the Knight of Aqualord. Along the way, they run into Amelia, who is representing Saillune in the undiscovered lands and she joins the party once more. I'm working my way slowly through the tankoubon when I can get pages of it, but it's a very, very good story. If you like the Lina/Gourry pairing and adore Amelia, then this is definitely a good series to pick up. Lyos and Shizuri, the two main new characters, are a lot of fun. Shizuri reminds me of the old stylization of Belldandy from Ah! Megami-sama.

Code Name wa Sailor V: The three-volume prequal to the Sailormoon series featuring the adventures of Aino Minako as Sailor V. This will unlikely be licensed until Sailormoon itself is re-licensed here again.

Okay, finally updated...yeah I know it was quite a while. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif Anyway, while there were a number of first time lists to this round of manga most wanted, it was mainly the top few getting more points, although some interesting titles moved way up, and a couple new titles snuck in /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif.

As usual, feel free to continue to update your lists, and how often I add everything will depend on how active this thread is and also how much time I have since I'll soon be in school. Still, I hope everyone will continue participating and some more titles to be licensed off that fine list! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif Thanks,

Yeah, I figured with the companies (or US branches at least) gone, they're not really licensed anymore...not sure what the chance of some of these being picked up by other companies are as most people's wanted titles seem to be newer things. I also have some I'd still love to see, and a couple people have been listing things like Miyu for a while, so I figured I'd better keep counting them. And maybe being on here will get them some more attention too. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Wow...thanks Pelianth, Noodle, and grunge for helping me out with those! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif I feel kinda special now. Please check around first/feel free to ask about titles everyone!

As for you mifuneral, I'd say you were lucky with just Pelianth's arched eyebrows, as they saved you from a very frusterated me after I just posted that I was going to remove Read or Die. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif But I'm going to be nice since you were posting late and let you keep Read or Dream up for now, as there is no info yet saying that it's also licensed, although I'm sure there's a better chance it will be. And Zombie Powder hasn't been licensed yet either.

Update should be later tomorrow or Mon, since there have been quite a few changes/new posts with these new licenses.

What is needed for some titles is a new publisher willing to release them uncut &amp; decently translated, recognising there is a market for them.

6. I'll (CKBC)

10. Rookies

Updating my list a bit here. Some info on what I added:

REAL - Currently at 4 volumes, this is a Young Jump manga from Inoue Takehiko (Vagabond, Slam Dunk) about two guys who's love for the game of basketball helps them overcome their own personal tragedies. One of the guys plays in a wheelchair after having a leg amputed due to a bone disease. The other was in a motorcycle accident that sent a girl he picked up into a coma, causing some PTSD that led to his quitting from the basketball club and being expelled from school. Of course, amazing artwork. Great stuff, I'm shocked this has not been licensed yet.

Tetsuwan Girl - An interesting premise about a girls baseball team set in the late 40s in post-war Japan. From the creator of Jiraishin (Ice Blade) and Alive. I haven't seen any of the manga yet, but it's only 9 volumes and ran in Kodansha's Morning.

Bakuon Rettou - About the Bosozoku (might be set in the 80s too) or Japanese speed tribes, the bike gangs. Same creator as Tetsuwan Girl. This is currently running in Kodansha's Afternoon. C'mon, we need a bosozoku manga!!

And it's all been updated again! Quite a bit of movement this time, with Gantz overtaking Ichigo 100% for the top again, and titles like Someday's Dreamers, Yohohama Kaidashi Kikou that once skirted around the bottom have moved up quite a bit. DNA^2 managed to sneak in again, the manga counterparts of current anime, Honey &amp; Clover and Trinity Blood are doing quite well, and hopefully Viz will have Read or Dream as it seems just as popular as Read or Die on this list anyway.

That's all for a while...I should still be able to update, but unless something major happens, or there are lots of new lists, probably not very frequently. Til then tho! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

If there is another shonen manga to collect, that would be Ichigo 100% that ended recently in Japan. [SNIP] TP would be the good choice to license it and Viz may be it since it is a Shonen Jump title. [SNIP]

This manga will be the top of my buylist when it gets licensed to go along with School Rumble next year.

All updated! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif Though as I'm guessing a lot of people were wondering if this thread was compeletely dead (Never! Manga Most Wanted lives on!) I will update it again pretty quickly if people want to change lists due to the number of titles have been at least found, if not all confirmed since last time.

1. Hime-chan no Ribon (http://www.tcp.com/doi/hime/) (Hime-chan's Ribbon) by Megumi Mizusawa - a tomboy has the power to transform into anyone in the world for one hour at a time. Naturally, problems and misunderstandings ensue. No monsters-of-the-week, just rich characterization.

2. Mimi wo Sumaseba (http://niko-niko.net/random/mimi.html) (Whisper of the Heart/If You Listen Closely) by Aoi Hiiragi - loved the Ghibli movie.

3. Dragon Half (http://www.artistic-inks.net/manga/guide/articles/dragonhf.htm) by Ryusuke Mita - the anime was funny, but incomplete.

4. Yamada Taro Monogatari (http://doushi-sumeragi.net/review/yamada.htm) by Ai Morinaga - Yamada Taro is poor, has a huge family, and lives in a shack, but everyone thinks he's a wealthy bishounen. While they're after him romantically, all he's after is food and money. Pure shoujo comedy.

5. Haibane Renmei (http://cff.ssw.net/merchandise/doujins.htm) doujinshi by Yoshitoshi ABe - the anime was based on this.

6. Jungle wa itsumo Hare nochi Guu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungle_wa_itsumo_Hale_nochi_Guu) (The Jungle Was Nice, Then Came Guu) by Renjuro Kindaichi - the anime was weird and funny. I want more.

7. Global Garden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Garden) by Saki Hiwatari - Please Save My Earth is great, so I'd love to read this too.

8. Gokinjo Monogatari (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=2487) (Neighborhood Story) by Ai Yazawa - came before Paradise Kiss.

9. Toraware no Minoue (http://hanayume.net/hanami-gumi/manga/torami.html) by Matsuri Hino - from the creator of MeruPuri.

10. The Heroic Legend of Arslan (http://hanayume.net/hanami-gumi/manga/arslan.html) by Yoshiki Tanaka - manga or novels, though I would prefer the novels.

Other stuff: Anything by Riyoko Ikeda, Moto Hagio, Mitsuru Adachi, Masami Tsuda, Miho Obana, Fuyumi Soryo, Kaori Yuki, and Mohiro Kitoh.

Wow, thanks for the links! I recognized a couple of the names: Ai Morinaga and Matsuri Hino, so I enjoyed reading about their other work as well as the ones I hadn't heard of before. I hope to catch Whisper of the Heart on TCM this month, and will most likely buy the DVD when it comes out in the USA.

I wonder if any of these will be announced at San Diego Comic Con this year

Honeymoon Salad by Hikaru NINOMIYA: a slice-of-life romance where the characters are in their mid to upper 20's (and yes, it is realistic enough that there is some non-explicit sex).

Family Compo by HOJO Tsukasa : a slightly twisted slice-of-life comedy concerning a very unconventional family (main character is just starting college when the story starts)

Living Game by Mochiru Hoshisato : another slice-of-life story with mostly older characters, too bad it is so down-to-earth and mundane that most would consider it boring.

Sing 'Yesterday' for Me by Kei Toume : slice-of-life romance where the main character is in his 20's and a "freeter"/loser(graduated from a good college but only got a job at a convenience store) who does not know what to do with his life. Unfortunately I believe it has a very slow release in Japan and is only up to 2 volumes.

Virgin na Kankei by Takumi Kobayashi : follows the love life of a salaryman; as close to hentai as you can come without going over the line. And the women (yes women, not girls) are drawn beautifully. /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif

Vulgar Ghost Daydream by Okuse Saki &amp; Meguro Sankichi : a mature horror manga. If you saw the anime (Ghost Talkers Daydream) you have an idea of how it is.

Itadakimasu by Yuki Yoshihara: a cute little sex comedy. And they explain why it is okay for the older divorcee to be having a physical relationship with a High School junior, and that is - he missed a whole year of school because of a severe illness, so he is really 18. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Tadashii Renai no Susume by ICHIJO Yukari: a high school senior moonlights as a male escort. Complications arise.

Haru yo Koi by Kaori Saki: relationships, breakups, sex, lesbians /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif , and a really good ending (or so I heard)

Lovely Complex by Aya Nakahara: (I have to mention at least one manga that I like that actually has a chance at getting licensed.) A high school romance without a trophy boyfriend/girlfriend element to it. That is so refreshing.

honorable mention: Gekkoh by Serika Himuro (high schoolers, yakuza, a really hot half-sister, -or so she says-, sex and violence); Kirai by Miura Noriko (I'm wondering if they'll ever just get along, yet alone if they'll ever get together); Holyland by Kouji Mori (street fighting manga with a slightly wimpy main character who is willing to fight to keep from being bullied and ostracized like he was in Junior High, and the manga was popular enough to spawn a TV show); Under the Dapple Shade by Hojo Tsukasa (I just can't get enough of his artwork); Sakura Diaries by Ujin (though if Touma is as big of a jerk as he is in the anime, I'm not so sure I'd buy it); and last but certainly not least anything by Adachi (Touch, Rough, Miyuki, H2, etc. you license it and I'll buy it!) I'm sure I left some out but my post is long enough as it is.

I just hope that my most wanted list will soon need to be updated.

anything by Adachi (Touch, Rough, Miyuki, H2, etc. you license it and I'll buy it!)

[/ QUOTE ]
While I too would buy anything Adachi, I just don't think this market has matured enough to release any of his materials yet. Short Program didn't do well for VIZ, and if the Maison Ikkoku manga had done better (as I see it as somewhat similar in tone and age) then we'd have a better chance.

However, I think VIZ (since I think all of his stuff is Sho/Shu material) could still take a chance! The question becomes, which title? His best and most known titles, H2 and TOUCH, are quite long (32 and 26 volumes respectively). That's quite an investment, but possibly you could do wideban releases?? A little risky.

Then there are his lesser known sports titles that are a bit smaller, like Nine (5), Rough (12), and Katsu! (16). Now the problem is that they are sports titles, which historically don't do well, and that all except Katsu! are over 15 years old, and historically older titles don't do well either. There is Cross Game, but again, it's sports and it has just re-started so there are timing issues.

So what's left? I actually think these three would be good choices to test the waters, even if they aren't my personal first picks:
Slow Step - Actually ran in a shoujo mag and has good romance/comedy appeal for everyone and little bit of softball/boxing for sports fans as well. It is short (7) but a little dated (~20 years old).
Miyuki - Romantic comedy, shoujo appeal. A little long (12) and a little dated (20 years old).
Hiatari Ryoko - A shoujo romantic comedy that is short (5), but is also dated (20+ years).
Niji-iro Tôgarashi - It's a period manga, samurai stuff sells, and of course it has romance. It's a tad long (11) but is a bit more recent (~15 years old).

And I do think that whatever title VIZ starts with, it should be a Signature title. But it would be damn interesting to see them put one of the shoujo titles in Shojo Beat, even as just a sample to gauge interest.

In my opinion Rough is more of a romantic comedy than a sports manga and so could be marketed as such. "Will the heirs to two feuding confectionery businesses find love together or will family rivalries keep them apart?" The sports aspect seems to be there more to intensify the romantic rivalry between the two guys than anything else and could almost be considered as a backdrop for the romantic-comedy action.

I agree, it would be interesting to see one of Adachi's shoujo titles appear in Shojo Beat. I wonder what the typical reader would think of the art style, though?

Wow, haha. Someone else beside me with a Makoto Isshiki manga listed. I thought I'd never see the day /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

I probably wouldn't have even put it there if you hadn't reminded me of it. I read the first volume a few months back and thought it was pretty good stuff and it seems like something that would get the sales to make bringing it over here worth it. Well, at least I can see myself buying it based on that first volume...

Bullseye.

And on another note, there's a surprising amount of YKK fans here. Huh.

Actually not only here. I'm surprised at the decent amount of fans this manga has in general despite it's nature; surprised and very pleased /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Isn't this already licensed? It's the Somedays Dreamers sequel, right?

Also, you've got Dragon Half twice in your new list...

But some of us newbies needed to post our lists here (in the old thread) so that we can take part in the gloating &amp; groaning, the cheers &amp; tears, as our favorite manga are licenced or passed over. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I wonder what San Diego Comic Con has in store for us? **anticipation**

That's fine of course (hopefully there will be a number of good reasons to celebrate. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif) Just I no longer have the data from the old threads, so I can't update based on the old (the ones in the first post) top 25 anymore. So soon after Comic-con I'll hopefully find a chance to restart everything. Sorry I haven't been around and PsychoIdiot had to fill in for me on what I'm doing, real life stuff and everything has kept me a little busier this summer. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

yay a reset ^^ which is good, i think the last time i updated my ranking the overall was never updated so this works out and i can start anew.

one quick question so i can plan out before we start the new rankings, things that have been stopped by publisher can be included in most wanted correct?

like Worst from DMP? since talking to them at AX confirmed that they would not continue this.

Yeah. Along with titles from a company that doesn't really exist anymore (Iron Cat, Gutsoon) or that have appeared before but have since been confirmed as still being in negotiation (Gakuen Alice, Spiral, He is My Master).

So, yes, I thought of some more, but unfortunately none of these were licensed yet after the last couple cons ^_^;

1. Violinist of Hameln (Michiaki Watanabe)
2. Neighborhood Story (Ai Yazawa)
3. Houshin Engi (Ryu Fujisaki)
4. Shinesman (Kaim Tachibana)
5. Pluto (Naoki Urasawa)
6. Wanted! (Eiichiro Oda)
7. Ion (Arina Tanemura)
8. Rose of Versailles (Ryoko Ikeda)
9. Pocket Monsters Special (various)
10. Code Name wa Sailor V (Naoko Takeuchi)

Pocket Monster Special is/was Pokemon Adventures. That one's got a snowball's chance since it already failed, but oh well.
