what if someone started an petition and sent it to the anime/manga companies?maybe (hopefully) they would realize that the "real" fans want their product unedited.or at least say the product is edited so those "real" fans can make their own choice on whether they will buy it or not.

I suspect it would be a much better idea to try to motivate more people to write actual paper letters to the companies responsible for editing, or whatever. That is what I intend to do, if I find that a title I really want to own had been tampered with in a wholly unacceptable way.
One of the big problems with this issue is that not everyone knows when a product has been edited. I myself do not collect the Japanese editions of any of the books I read, so I rely on the word of folks who post here, who are double-dipping on a title to get an English language translation. I'm sure that a lot of these publishing companies are aware that since they are attempting to sell their wares to the general populace, and not just a small, hardcore group, they know they'll be able to get away with selling hundreds of copies of a title, with only five people noticing any modifications to the original work.
Did you hear about what happened with Tenjo Tenge, greg? I can't remember the name of the actual convention, but quite a few people, if not one person, went out of their way to leave notes on top of CMX's stack of graphic novels for sale - so that other fans could be fully aware of the edits before they purchased their copy of the book. Admirable, I think. /images/graemlins/happy.gif
(I apologize you were already aware of this, btw.)
