My friend and I are planning a trip to Tokyo in march but unfortunately neither he or I speak a word of Japanese /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

For this reason I was thinking that I might pick up this Tokyo City Atlas to facilitate finding our way around Tokyo.

http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/47...d=12M8UQOQHB0AS (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/4770025033/ref=cs_nav_top_wl/ref=cm_mp_wli_/701-5826879-4024335?coliid=I3DRHAXMYGPEP0&colid=12M8UQOQHB0AS)

Does anyone know if this is worth picking up? Or have any advice as to what guidebooks I should be picking up? Thanks a lot for any help!

That was what I used when I went in March and it was the most helpful thing I had ever used. It is detailed to the city block and it is so clear, I NEVER got lost in Tokyo in 10 days there. I seriously recommend it!!!

If you can read maps and know how subways / trains work, it's really easy to find your way around.

I have this one (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/4770023146/qid=1122260190/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_0_2/701-2956754-5049965), but I assume they are basically the same, and yes, yes, yes, get it, and carry it with you everywhere. Maps are essential to get where you want to go in Tokyo.

I also recommend Lonely Planet's Japan guide (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/1740591623/qid=1122263963/sr=2-2/ref=sr_2_17_2/701-2956754-5049965) for general site seeing information. They have a guide (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/1740594509/qid=1122263963/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_17_3/701-2956754-5049965) just for Tokyo, if you're not leaving the city, but I don't know what that's like.

I've used the Lonely Planet Japan guide for navigation through Tokyo and other cities, and it works just fine. The maps aren't super detailed, but as long as you don't stray too far from the main areas you should be okay. I'd say a Lonely Planet guide plus a regular map would work (I got a plain old Tokyo map from the local JTB travel bureau). Of course if you need guidebooks for attractions that are outside Lonely Planet, then you may want to buy another one too. I might get some extra guides next time I drop by Tokyo, since I've already seen most of the things I wanted to see in the LP book.

Is that why I always get lost? I need one of these "map" thingies... /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

Btw, that's a quite pricey book... $239 Canadian? Wowzers. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

From a seller with enough negatives I wouldn't buy from them. Looks like he sells bootlegs too.
