Zatch Bell - confirmed edit

Thought I'd post this, since I just confirmed this today at Kinokuniya.

I got a copy of Zatch Bell #1 from Viz Media, an Action label title rated T. On the credits page there is the disclaimer about nudity and/or excessive violence being edited. Within the first few pages I knew something was up when I saw the character Zatch wearing poorly drawn boxers. Sure enough, after looking at the first couple pages at Kino's, he was nekkid in the original with genitalia showing, as he was being flown in on the bird into the boy's room.

Gash/Zatch runs around naked pretty often early in the series so I'm not too surprised about that. What I'm wonder about is the "excessive violence" being edited.

Just when i thought it would be safe to get the manga, because the anime was already edited. Looks like I should have done what other people were doing and buy the R2's and tanks.

I don't have the Viz book in front of me, so I might have the wording wrong, but I remember "nudity" and "violence" being in the disclaimer. It might just be a standard disclaimer used in all approprite books from now on, and there might not be any violence edited. I didn't buy the 1st volume of the original tank, so I can't compare. But ugh, it's going to be in my head the entire duration of the first volume.

As much as I do not support buying editing things, I will still be buying this to compare in detail to the first Japanese volume (unless someone else produces a list of edits, including translation, first).

Viz should just go rename themselves to Editz at this point.

I wonder if they ever plan on releasing the original. And what is even stranger, a T rating on a childrens manga and they still had to edit it!

I should have access to a Viz copy closer to release date, so I can make scans like I have for TenTen and By the Sword. If someone can provide me with tank scans I can see about getting them hosted as well.

Meh, I started disliking Viz as soon as they changed Saint Seiya, and with all the ones that have followed, I just can't stand the company. That's why I didn't renew my SJ subscription and have stopped buying their manga. I'm utterly dissapointed with them, since they can do a great job *points to Banana Fish, Basara and basically anything not SJ*. While the industry has advanced, they're going backwards.

Okay, I've started to go over this with a fine tooth comb... one of these edits is on page 78. They have removed the gun the robber guy is holding toward Suzume's head in the top frame and again in the one below of it, removed the barrel of the gun.

Well they've removed guns before. If I'm remembering correctly Viz won't show them pointing at anyone. I can't remember if the TV broadcast had guns or not. I guess it's just too traumatic for a 13 year old. "Excessive" just got downgraded by the looks of it, too bad.

The gun in the TV series was changed to a laser rifle. They used an interesting method to get around Folgore's "quirk" as well. But what will happen when Big Boin shows up? Only time will tell.
