View Full Version : Odd DVD player annoyance

I bought a Yamaha DV-S5750 DVD player about a month ago. It's been working great so far, except that during some dvds, mainly Funimation releases, the "angle" icon pops up on the screen...and stays there...throughout the entire episode/disk. I first noticed this on FMA Vol. 4, and then again on Samurai 7. Kinda annoying >.<.
So I'm wondering if it's a problem with the releases themselves, or the DVD player itself. I'm thinking that it's the DVD player, but I just want to make sure before I return it. Any advice would be appreciated.

My DVD player does this too. I saw the icon appear in the corner of the screen for 'Ah My Goddess OVA intro'. I have no idea how to get rid of the icon but it's never been a problem for me yet as the icon disapears after the intro.
I can confirm it is your dvd player and NOT THE DISC. With most players there is a way to disable this icon... however i do not know how.

I see. The icon appears during the intro of Samurai 7, but on FMA it appears throughout the entire episode, and I think only on first and third episodes on volume 4, although I don't exactly remember. I may still exchange the player for another one, so that I have another 30 days to return the unit. I'll probably start bugging Yamaha tech support now =b.
Edit: Spelling =x
Edit dos: Clarified which eps of FMA I've seen the problem so far.

There should be an option in the system menu (I'll check on my own dvd player tonight where it is) called angle mark (or something like that) all you do is set it to off and that mark on the screen should go.

I have a Yamaha DVD-S550 and the multi-angle icon appears only around the opening and ending credits, and there is no way to disable it. (Hoestly it's not a big annoyance to me.) This is definitely a "feature" of the player as opposed to the disc.
But I'll check those episodes you mentioned to be sure that the multi-angle icon isn't appearing throughout the whole show.

Yup. That should do it for most players. With the angle marker set to "on" (some player ship with it defaulted to "on"), the icon will appear whenever an alternative angle is available. Don't know what the deal is with the FMA episodes (haven't watched it yet). As for the OMG OVA, the OP/ED have alternative angles with the credits in English.
Edit: Hmmm...I'm looking at the DV-S5750's manual and it mentions nothing about having any control over setting a preference for whether or not the icon appears. It only mentions how to change the angle. There may not be a way to turn it off. What a dumb "feature". /images/graemlins/relief1.gif

Whoops, I think you edited your post or I previously misread that the problems were occuring on FMA eps 1 and 3.
But now your post says it's affecting Vol 4, and I don't have that disc yet.

Actually, it's my fault. I meant the first and third episodes of volume 4. I should probably go back and edit that post =x.

Well I went through Volume 3, and the angle icon only appears during the intro and ending of each episode, which is fine. But the angle icon appears during episodes 13-15 on disc 4, as well as during the intro and ending sequence. Ugh. Time to google and see if I can find a fix. Grr.

I've done a bit of digging and the angle mark option (that is the correct name) should be in the video settings menu (I'd provide an image from my dvd player but I have a philips DVP520 so it wouldn't help anyone)

The Yamaha DVD player doesn't seem to have that option whatsoever. Guess I'll just live with it. Still a nice DVD player /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif.

Darn it! I just did a search, hoping to find a solution to this problem. I am running a Yamaha s5650 and am getting the same problem. I have had the player for over a year and had not noticed this, but since I have started getting back into anime of late, it's been popping up on several discs, Gunslinger Girl Vols 1-3 & Burst Angel Vol. 1.
I have gone through every set-up option on my player and there is no way to shut this off. /images/graemlins/sad.gif While it's a minor technical glitch, it really burns my biscuits. I'm watching the emotional finale to Gunslinger Girl and then a minute or two before the show is even over that damnable camera angle icon pops up right before the girls start singing Beethoven's 9th, and totally ruins the mood, as I start hurling f-bombs at the television.
Oh well, maybe it's time to unpack my trusty old Panasonic A-300.
