Gatherings? We have gatherings here in Chicago? /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Although, if you'd like to go to a convention to meet people, this one is coming up soon. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'd like to hear your impressions of this show after you see them... I saw them last week. Feel free to post about it in the Asian music forum if it's not appropriate here (probably isn't) - you can use the old thread or start your own...
I am obviously a bit obssessed.
Probably kinda late to try to use this as a site gathering though /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Hmm, the last gathering from this forum was in 2002 last I remembered @ my first AnimeCentral. The midwest isn't as represented or tight as the East & West Coast for AOD gatherings I'm afraid. If that's what you're looking for you may want to join up with some of the local convention forums like AnimeCentral.

It's not like you can't organize your own gatherings. Just choose a time and place as a group and get together. There was a UK London gathering last year when I went to visit. We went to the British Museum, lunch, shopping in Convent Gardens, walked along Picadilly and then to (I think) Hyde Park. Some then left while others went to dinner.

That sort of thing seems to work well.....as I've met a few members of AoD that way while visiting Chicago and San Francisco last year. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

While that was easy enough for SF (Japan Center), it proved to be quite difficult for Chicago.
Magus427 and I probably spent way too much time trying to decide on a time/place to eat for the 4 of us. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
No matter what, those who want to organize such a meet should NOT wait until the "last minute" to try to throw something together.....especially if there isn't a location that sticks out as a prime meeting place. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif
FWIW, if anyone wants an idea for a good place for a Chicago "meet", check out Cafe Ba-Ba-Reba for good Spanish tapas. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Unfortunately I won't be seeing them. I'm working until 6pm or so (on break now) and then have to do some watering for my mom after work since she's out of town. I'm not that much of a fan. I just posted it here incase anyone was interested in going at the last minute. There are a couple people attending from the local anime group I'm a part of so if you want I can forward you their impressions since you're so obsessed. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

In the instance that I was referring to, leaving it entirely up to Magus wasn't even an option as it had to fit into a very tight schedule for that weekend. /images/graemlins/relief.gif
It was trying to fitg it into the schedule that was the main issue...not as much a problem with finding a restaurant to eat at...if anything, there were too many options regarding places to eat. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Besides, had I left it to Magus, he would have picked a pancake house that was quite a distance outside of downtown Chicago. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

Oh..I don't doubt that possibility at all.
In fact, I told Mike that if not for other "considerations", I would have gladly went with it since that type of place greatly appealed to me for a brunch/lunch.
However, the main problem was that this place was quite a distance away from the downtown area and we just didn't have time to travel that far and back.....and then get to our next destination of the day. /images/graemlins/sad.gif
As it was, the schedule nearly ended up falling apart later that day due to not allocating enough time for certain extra places. /images/graemlins/relief.gif

As a rule, if you're doing a gathering.... you need to allocate several hours to it.
So, while you were in Chicago.... did you eat any pizza or hot dogs? /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

We barely had 3 hours available that day....if that.
Then again, even the 2005 AB, AX and Otakon gatherings didn't last more than 4 hours. :sd1

But the Otakon gathering was close by, and from what I hear of the Chicago gathering... you had people coming from all over. Thus you need to take travel time into account. Plus, you'll want to talk, and maybe see things together? Yeah... several hours. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Oh so you didn't have any Chicago style pizzas, nor did you see this place (http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Photo.aspx?RefID=87&PhotoID=900). /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

As I recall, we were looking at two pancake houses. One being quite far from downtown, but the other one still in the city not too far from downtown. Of course that would've been more workable, but you refused to leave the downtown area considering all the places you were visiting as well as your other "considerations". /images/graemlins/wink.gif
In any case, where we ended up going wasn't bad, except I got to commute all the way downtown to go to a restaurant that had another location 10min from me. /images/graemlins/wink.gif Not to mention, I was late by 10min and had to commute the longest out of everyone. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Well, if some of you want to get together for the Chicago International Film Festival (http://www.chicagofilmfestival.org/cgi-bin/WebObjects/CIFFSite.woa/wa/pages/Home), you might find something anime related to watch (http://www.jaschicago.org/anime/Default.htm) on the big screen /images/graemlins/wink.gif
