View Full Version : Problems Clicking Through The AoD Referrer Links?
Mod Edit: Since this issue potentially applies to all affiliated eBay auctions, I'm splitting it into its own thread.
I'd take a look at your stuff, but those redirect links still don't work for me.
And if anyone says "Use Firefox", they're getting an earfull. Just for the hell of it, I downloaded that piece of shit, and it didn't connect either. So HA!

Works in both browsers for me, so I'm not sure what's going on.
Edit:
The non-affiliate link is: hxxp:// search.ebay.com/ _W0QQsassZryuurodenQQhtZ-1
I'd say, open up the eBay affiliate link in the retailer menu above, sign in, and then copy-paste this link into your browser. That should bring you to the list AND keep affiliate status, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
Otherwise just use the top affiliate link, and go to item #6429216435 and continue on to view all of his items from there.
Unless you mean the affiliate link itself doesnt work either /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
Edit2: added spaces to the link because it auto-hyperlinked it even after I changed http to hxxp o_O I just don't want people clicking that link and not giving Chris credit, it's only in this post at all so Wabbit can get to the listing.

Gee, well, I hope the affiliate link thingy is working cause I can get a lot of hits for Chris atm.

For the thinpak sets and singles you have, did you actually cut the covers or just fold back the extra? There's a few things I'm interested in but I was just curious (and don't really care either way). And for whatever dvds have inserts, do you still have those with the dvds as well?

I also use IE and they work fine for me. Do you run Norton Internet Security by chance?

I cut the covers, but it's not very visible. Some of them, the covers were already small enough. You really do not have to cut much off to make it fit in nice and tight, barely a sliver on each end. This is one of the reasons I listed them at lower prices. However, I think the dvds actually display much nicer when in thinpak's anyways. All the inserts are still there and untouched (for those that had inserts)
Edit: the only covers that have been shortened are the ones that were transfered to thinpaks.

If you are using any kind of hosts blocking lists, it's possible that they are breaking the links, which do relay through the well-known adserver adfarm.mediaplex.com.
Any kind of adblocking software could be interefering here.

Yup, I can't click the referrer links because I've got Qksrv blocked in my hosts file. I have to extract the actual ebay link to look at them. If I ever do find something I wish to bid on, I'll worry about the problem then.

I don't use IE. I use Avant (which is based on IE's code), and I've never had any Norton products. Ever since Chris started this affiliate thing I've never had one of those links work - the affiliate link at the top, the redirects, nada. Which is a shame because I buy quite a bit on eBay and I'd like to help Chris out.
And before anyone asks, yes I disabled my firewall and AVS software, yes I put the redirect URL in my safe list, YES I disabled pop-up and ad blocking... and it's never worked in all these months. And the response has always been, "Use Firefox." /images/graemlins/relief1.gif

How odd...(and no, I'm not going to say Use Firefox, because the only reason I have it installed on any of my computers is for testing web pages). Never heard of Avant, but since you did try Firefox it definately sounds like some kind of network issue, but no idea what else it could be. Going through any kind of router?

I even just put it in the exceptions list for my ad and pop up blockers, and I still get a DNS error.

Even with all those things you turned off, a hosts blocking list could still be preventing you from accessing those referrer links.
If IE reports "Cannot find server or DNS Error" then the a hosts blocking list should be your primary suspect. (Browser makes no difference in such a case.)

These referral links don't work at home for me, and I've tried all the browsers I use: FireFox (preferred browser), Internet Explorer, and Opera.
I click on them on my work computer, and they show up just fine, though they do take a while to load. What's up?
I honestly wish people would either give two links or stop using referrals altogether. The point of posting an auction here is to increase awareness of your product, not for Chris to make a few extra bucks. And if these referral links are already causing problems... well people it doesn't take a genious to figure out to at least give an alternative link!
-Edit-
A router can cause problems for these? Meh...

First thing I'd check is your hosts file, since I know that mine was blocking some of the referring links, but once I cleaned that line out, all was well for clicking on them.

Okay, assuming you're running 2K/XP, go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc . Right-click on the 'hosts' file, and make sure that it's not read-only. (If it is, you won't be able to change/remove the lines you need to remove for the links to work.) Open it with your preferred text program. (I recommend Notepad.) The lines you need to remove are adfarm.mediaplex.com and jdoqocy.com, as both of those are used to get to eBay. Then save it, and reset it to read-only. That should fix the problem. I also recommend searching on Google for a good hosts file, since there are many out there that block many problem sites. (Gator, anyone?)

That turned out to be my problem. Once I deleted the reference to qksrv.net, I haven't had any problems.

Ok... could anybody decipher this jargon for me? (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/danieljr82/host.jpg)
1. Hostname.exe is the only file in the System32 folder with the name "Host" on it.
2. I shouldn't edit a file that could potentially crash my computer to make referral links work.
3. What's so hard about providing non-referral links?

1. The hosts file for WinXP is located in \windows\system32\drivers\etc\
Hostname.exe is not what you are looking for. Do not touch it.
For other operating systems, it is located in other areas or might be a combination of files.
2. The real hosts file was designed to be edited. It is just a text file that you edit with notepad or some other editor.
3. Nothing. Using the sponsored links is a courtesy to Chris, and this forum would not be here without the eBay affiliation. But providing both sponsored and regular links is also fine. /images/graemlins/happy.gif
The lines you are looking for and want to delete if present involve
qksrv.net
adfarm.mediaplex.com

I didn't even know about this file... my file was massive, something like a thousand sites blocked. O_O' I'm not touching the rest, if it keeps my computer free from spam I'll leave it like it is.

Glad to see this is working for you. Hosts do not directly protect from e-mail spam, but it does help protect against malware/spyware/etc and especially banner ads.
