View Full Version : Would I enjoy Vagabond (and/or Berserk)?

This is probably something that has a really obvious answer, but as someone who loves shounen/seinen and action/violence, I was thinking of starting Vagabond.

Given what I like, would you suggest I start it?

Anything wrong with it at all?

To make things more interesting, I have yet to read Berserk (haven't seen the anime either) - would you recommend Vagabond, Berserk or both?

Thanks

johnny my boy, you would love these titles. Have I failed you yet so far? /images/graemlins/wink.gif Both feature amazing artwork. I'd probably give the story edge to Berserk overall, but Vagabond is so damn violently poetic, while Berserk is just raw. Two different titles, but you'd enjoy both.

You know, since you haven't seen the Berserk anime yet, I would not watch it yet and just go straight to the manga. Then after vol 14 or so, watch the anime.

Good luck catching up to 20 volumes of Vagabond. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif Inoue started back up again and 21 should come out this month in JP.

I would also highly recommend Blade of the Immortal if you're not already collecting it.

I'll have to check out Vagabond. Never even heard of it, much less seen it at bookstores. hrmm...

Heh, wait 'til you make it to the later books. You haven't seen anything, yet. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Okay, so I'm late on this thread, and johnny's already convinced, but I'll echo to go for it. Both are great purchases. As for Berserk, which is admittedly my favourite manga, the early art is not indicative of what comes later. The great thing about Berserk is that with each volume, the art will continue to improve, and the story will continue to become more layered. You'd really be hardpressed to find a more successfully epic story in all of manga.

My $.02.

First volume of Vagabond came in today. Berserk is backordered though /images/graemlins/depresse.gif

If I didn't have a debt, I'd have bought a lot more of Vagabond and Berserk because I'm pretty sure I'm gonna love them and want to read them all at once.

Ah, that's a shame. Vagabond volumes are pretty quick reads. Heavy on visual storytelling and well choreographed action. I've found Vagabond works best when read in larger chunks, since the story flows along so quickly and fluidly.

If you do get a chance with Berserk, too, I'd also suggest buying a few volumes at a time. It doesn't really get into its real meat until about volume 4, where it starts to improve in both storytelling and art.

Hope you enjoy both of them. Great series, they are.

What company put out Vagabond? Given that description, I think I'll probably be better off waiting for a company sale or something.

Anyway, thanks for the info! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Editor's choice title are rarely edited. I don't recall an EC title being edited.
Volume 1-4 are price at 14 dollar and the rest are 10 dollar
Excellent production just like Blade of the Immortal.

But the thing with Vagabond is you should read them in Arc or else you'll be lefting wanting to know what happen.

I'm reading both and I recommend both.

They're both very adult series... depictions of sex/rape... and the violence can be both realistic and gratuitous (moreso in Berserk of course).

Berserk has turned into my favorite book - all out. I scramble for every new volume and it gets better and better. The action is spectacular, but I just love the setup... I like that lone wolf character fighting against nearly impossible odds... it's like Fist of the North Star... but with more fantasy and the characters are a lot more fleshed out.

Vagabond is supposed to be semi-historical as it's Miyamoto Musashi's story --- it's also a good read but the volumes go by very quickly. The artwork is gorgeous and there are lots of spots where you get full spreads of finely detailed art... but this is definitely a book that can vary in amounts of dialogue. I've literally sat down and finished volumes in under 20 minutes...

They're both great though, I whole-heartedly recommend. Berserk over Vagabond though.

Well, just by way of an update, I have since bought and read volume 1 of both these titles and love them both!
Vagabond has a great setting and I loved the art too. Definitely gonna keep up with this one.
As for Berserk...Wow! Read volume 1 last night and was completely blown away. So much hinted at Guts character and background and even though it is very dark and depressing, the violence etc is great! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Thanks for all who advised me to get these two! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
