View Full Version : Companies likely to edit (Plus Love Hina, Chrno Crusade)

I want to start collecting English based manga, but I very nervous with all these reports of censorship and edits.
Which companies are most likely to censorship their manga.
So far I have the impression of the following companies:
<font color="red">Most likely to edit:</font>
Viz
CMX
<font color="green">Least likely to edit:</font>
ADV Manga
Tokyo Pop
My first purchase would be Love Hina and Chrono Crusade. Are there any censorship or edits on those titles?
Apparenly some of the dialogue was edited for Love Hina, but the artwork is untouched. Maybe edited is the wrong term, but I've heard the translation isn't as faithful as it could have been. Can't say anything about Chrono Crusade as I don't read it. But ADV did censor one or two of their mangas so far, unfortunately I don't recall the name(s).

Uh, ADV is unlikely to edit only so long as there is nothing potentially controversial in a title (the majority of their titles). As soon as there is something to edit--they edit.
Which to me is why you can't give a simple yes/no good/bad answer for most companies. Viz is among the most likely to edit--if your title ends up in the SJ line-up. But Viz is also among the most likely to bring over mature material and print it with a quality translation and no edits--if the title ends up in the Editor's Choice line-up. Del Rey has a spotless record on edits--but they haven't brought over anything more controversial than Akamatsu (so far, hopefully next year we'll see the maintain their record while branching into more mature titles).
DMP, ComicsOne, and AW are the 3 which so far have maintained consistent no-editing while actually printing some controversial material--unfortunately all 3 are smaller companies with smaller numbers of titles.

What do you think of Del Rey? I don't remember reports of actual censorship from them. Their manga division is still pretty small though.
Edit: oops, I guess I skimmed too quickly.

As I said, Del Rey's record is, in one sense, perfect. However, they haven't tried bringing over a Berserk or a Flowers & Bees or an Arm of Kannon (to name 3 titles published unedited by companies that have edited other material). The most controversial thing they have so far is Akamatsu's barbie-doll nudity in Negima and they originally planned on editing that.
Hopefully, they learned their lesson from that and as they start to bring over more mature titles (the already announced Basilisk and Dallas saying they were looking to do more of that) they'll keep their spotless record on editing. But until they do, you can't really say how likely they are to edit--they aren't editing; but no other company would edit the titles they have either.

It's probably worth mentioning that Love Hina had upwards of five different editors and all of them were telling the people involved in its production to do different things with the book. That doesn't decrease its enjoyability as a series in the least, though...unlike the dub voice actors in the anime making the show unwatchable for some people.
If there were any major changes that I'd wish to see in Love Hina's manga, then I'd have to say the missing honorifics and sound effects would be at the top of my list with Naru being called "Narusegawa" a close second. But TOKYOPOP considers that manga complete, so I doubt they are going to correct any of those unless Love Hina becomes uber-popular again.

Actually, other than TenTen and an area this |____| big (not joking, actual size of only edit in book) in Sword of the Dark Ones, CMX hasn't edited anything that has come out since then. They have maintained their editing of TT but since then have released multiple other shrink-wrapped mature titles without edits. So while their first impression was a horrible one, that's the only title they've consistently edited.

Hasn't DMP dropped an explicite bonus story or two from some books that were otherwise non-explicite, or am I just confusing them with CPM again?

I will say that I haven't made source-to-release comparisons for all of their titles. But there is enough scrutiny leveled at them by the majority of people in this forum that I think it would have come up. As it was, there was suspicion of editing in Monster Collection and a giant thread grew up about it, but then it was revealed that it wasn't editing at all, just overlaying of a sound effect translation and it kind of died. I repeat, because of the first impression people have been suspicious enough of all CMX's releases that I think it would have been posted here and other than the two I mentioned in the previous post it hasn't.

You are confusing them. DMP has not edited (censored/cut) anything from their titles. CPM dropped 12 pages of boy-boy lovin' in Selfish Love and 7 pages of bonus/side story in Golden Cain.

In Seimaden?
You sure you have the right manga? I think you are thinking of Sword of the Dark Ones. You should clarify before accusing a newly released manga of being censored... Seimaden volume 1 only came out a short while ago, and to my knowledge doesn't include any penises.

Yeah, you're thinking of when I said on this board that a penis was edited on one page of Sword of the Dark Ones (I edited the script). I've never even seen a Seimaden thread here.

I was going to say /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif...I remember once someone worried that there were a couple...interesting scenes in Seimaden that might be adjusted (a la Yami no Matsuei), but I haven't heard anything since.

And Del Ray gets major props for actually LISTENING to fan outcry when they were planning to edit Negima. If they had gone ahead with the edits, I wouldn't have ended up buying it. /images/graemlins/happy.gif
