View Full Version : Godannar: First Impressions

Just finished watching the first three episodes of Godannar. Wow.
First of all, it's just a heckuva fun show. For those of you who like giant frickin' robots, there's robots that are both giant and frickin'. For those of you who like fanservice, there's a Gunbuster homage that goes to eleven. A very entertaining show all around.
It's great to hear Brett Weaver in a lead role again: his Goh brings back fond memories of Gai Daigouji (and in this series, I'm fairly confident that <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>he'll survive a lot longer than he did in Nadesico</span>. Hilary is cute and very funny as Anna. Laura Chapman gets some of the best lines in the show as Anna's mother (in episode 2, her delivery of the line about a <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>"jelly doughnut"</span> made both Arcturus and me laugh out loud.
The show has a huge cast, and everybody just sounds pleased as punch to be there... the energy level is very high.
I can't wait for more of this one!

Like Geo, I've also got this disc (expect the full bells and whistles to come soon /images/graemlins/wink.gif ). I was able to watch the first episode TWICE last night and... good God. :D
I haven't seen a lot of giant robot shows, but this I like. I'm guessing this is one big parody type show, and it's TOTALLY obvious to the point where I picked up on it. /images/graemlins/happy.gif It's frickin' funny and the sexual innuendo is laugh-out-loud.
That said, in brief, I'm loving this cast. Chris Ayres is hysterical as Koji. He's just one big ball of intense. And I think Vicious will get his Hilary fix with this too. /images/graemlins/happy.gif
I LOVE THIS SHOW. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Oh, you just gotta tell me that, don't you? I love Laura Chapman, and if she's got a "breast button-popping scene" and I've gotta wait for it, that's just cruel.
Matt Greenfield was saying in a post over at DubReview that this show was dubbed with actors in a group, rather than individually. It should be an interesting show from that perspective alone.

Indeed... the groups were arranged around who had the most scenes together, 2-3 actors at a time. So, Brett, Hilary and Greg would record together on a volume and the pilot pairs would record together. Working with Kelly Manison was a TREAT, y'all!

I've been putting off buying this since I already have the whole thing on R2, but the dub sounds like a lot of fun, so I think I'll reconsider.
And the button popping scene is well worth it. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Damn you... I've been trying to avoid buying this series (for minor financial reasons) but your review coupled with ADV's torrent of stuff has just pushed me over the line. This is the second time your reviews have 'forced' me to buy something. The first was Mazinkaiser (a purchase I don't regret in the least).

Actually, it was a bit more complex than that, as we organized the recording like a film shoot and recorded the actors in multiple group configurations so that the key characters in each scene would be working together. So, not only did Hilary and Brett have a number of sessions together as a pair by themselves, the two of them also did a number of scenes together in triads with Greg, Laura, Tiffany and so on. Then Hilary and Laura had scenes together without Brett, Brett did scenes with Tiffany, Hilary and Greg worked together, and then we had the pilot groups come in and do their bits together, the bridge team and groups of the mechanics. Finally, a number of actors also had solo sessions to do the screaming, radio chatter, etc. In all, recording the first 5 episodes of Godannar required 37 different combinations of actor groups in I've forgotten how many sessions, a numer of which had to be done on weekends since the leads live in different cities and have other jobs they have to show up for on weekdays.
The other major thing that we did different on this show was to record most of it in real time... that is to say, rather than recording one line at a time, we'd actually record a whole section of the script with everyone playing off each other live, then go back, watch it and make tweaks to the scipt or deliveries to better match synch and re-record the whole scene again. It was a really crazy leap of faith thing to try, but thanks to an incredibly talented cast, a solid script by Tif and Jason Grundy's engineering and willingness to work long weekends, we actually managed to pull it off with perfect synch. As an experiment for building chemistry quickly it also paid off quite nicely and we've already recorded the second volume the same way with the third set to start recording next week.

Given how well the 'actor interplay' experiment appears to have been pulled off, have you or any other ADV directors given some thought to employing it in other high energy ensemble series?
As this essentially turns established anime dubbing conventions on their head, it would really be compelling to gauge this topic in an all-directors panel at AnimeVegas or elsewhere. Particularly if we've reached a point where skilled engineers and scriptwriters can smooth out any inconsistencies when it comes to flap matching and audio sync with only minor touchups and re-records required.
Or is the whole team process so exhaustive and taxing in terms of necessary time (ie. 37 actor combos), that only the overly-dedicated and insane would dare attempt it with another series? /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
I guess the other question would be whether there's a show you've worked on in the past that you'd like to have the chance and go back and re-record with this kind of team dynamic to see how differently it would turn out? I can imagine shows like Nadesico would have really meshed well with it. You'd have 2-3 minutes of actors going manic and feeding off each other's energy... with Kira chiming in with a 'baka' every so often to cap things off. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Why thank you, sir!
It's gratifying, when you take commercial and industrial voiceover courses as I have where they preach "less is more," and then you get to pilot a giant robot in anime and you get told that, "'more' is not enough, leave me a lung and both your tonsils on the next attack scream, boy!"
I had me some big fun doing Giant Chinese Horn Mullet Guy with the Silly Horny Hat.

I got the chance to see a couple of episodes at Animefest, and I'll happily agree with all the GODANNAR love. Fun show, great dub.
More than anything else, it's unbelievably awesome to hear Brett Weaver again. Weaver was an extremely good choice for the part of Goh: his performance has all the intensity and energy of his much-loved trademark role (and a favorite of mine), Gai Daigoji in Nadesico. He also fares very well at exploring Goh's softer side, promising a much more richly layered characterization in the series than he had the chance to give in Nadesico. I'm very excited to see more of this performance.
The rest of the cast is in fine form, too. Hilary Haag plays Anna Aoi with an earnestness that she doesn't seem to get to use much outside of Matt Greenfield's dubs. Laura Chapman does an excellent job of projecting the authority required of her character (though I would like to hear her sounding a bit more playful), and Greg Ayres is perfectly cast as likeable young Shinobu. Tiffany Grant and Chris Ayres make a great team as the Dannar pilots, and Mariela Ortiz and Brittney Karbowski both sound great as the "bridge bunnies".
Unfortunately, I didn't get far enough into the show to hear the rest of the pilots. However, everything I did hear sounded excellent, and I'm anxious to hear more.

Wow. That's a lot to answer. I won’t speak for the other ADV directors, but this is something I’ve been working toward for a long time, so I certainly intend to record more series this way. From my point of view, the extra difficulty in scheduling and pre-pro is definitely off set by the great stuff that you capture spontaneously, but it’s not a process that’s going to mesh well with every actor or director’s technique, and there are some shows where the benefits may not outweigh the disadvantages. To use Nadesico as an example, it certainly would have been nice in some of the more intimate and dramatic scenes, but for the huge “every character on stage talking over each other, three conversations going on at once" scenes, recording separately has the big plus of being able to place each line exactly where it has to be at exactly the right volume level to be heard clearly. Ditto for much of Excel Saga. On the other hand, I would have loved to have tried recording big chunks of Parasite Dolls and Princess Nine this way, not because either show turned out bad the way they were, but just because it would have been fun.
As to whether other studios could do the same thing, for the sake of discussion I'd have say that I’m sure they could... with the right cast, creative team and some time and patience. However, there a lot of standard (and, to my mind, outdated) ADR conventions used at many studios that would have to be un-learned, on the part of both the actors and the technical people, and for many the time and effort required simply may not be practical or economical. After all, one of the main reasons ADV built its own studios is the freedom and flexibility we gained to experiment and try crazy things. As part of our long term plans our facilities were designed to fit the requirements of multi-actor recording, and we’ve done a good bit of it on the side over the years, so we weren't just jumping into the deep end. We had a really good idea of what the potential problems would be and how to handle them, and even more importantly, we had the safety net of knowing that if things went totally south, we could just fall back and do everything over again conventionally. In contrast, many studios used for ADR don’t have multiple booths that can be linked together, and many ADR producers don’t even have their own studios, so in order to do this under optimal circumstances, someone somewhere is going to have to shell out a good bit of extra cash up front just to conduct the experiment. Given how tight budgets are these days, that could be a difficult hurdle to overcome, but I imagine that there are enough crazy people in this business that someone else will try it.

I got my preview screener in the mail yesterday. I'm trying really hard to stop myself from going into Super Fanboy Mode. I love it. It's a hilarious show, plenty of action, comedy and fanservice, and the dub is exceptional.
Here are the other pilots:
English Dragliner Team:
Knight - Chris Patton
Ellis - Shannon Emmerick
They both use an English accent, and I loved it. Chris's Knight is very smooth, cocky, and a bit of a skirt chaser. At first, I thought it was Kim Prause as Ellis. Shannon has fewer lines than Chris, but her accent is quite good.
Chinese Goddiner Team:
Moukaku - George Manley
Shukuyu - Kelly Manison
George is HUGE. His character, his delivery, the horns on his head, everything. It's a beautiful thing. And Kelly plays his diminutive partner with a surpringly youthful voice.
North American Genesister Team:
Shadow - Christine Auten
Luna - Sasha Paysinger
This is the only girl/girl team, and as all the teams seem to be made up of partners that are in love, you know what I'm hoping for. Christine is sexy as always, and Sasha gets to yell "Hold you horses, dammit!" Sweet.
Russian Volspin Team:
Ekatarina - Marcy Rae
Kukruchyov - Illich Guardiola
Their robot has huge football-shaped breasts that jiggle. I wanna buy that robot designer a beer. Marcy uses a deliciously over-the-top Russian accent. Illich plays her worshipful boytoy partner who wants nothing more than to serve his mistress. It's another great job by Illich.
The cast is massive. I wrote down 23 different characters, and I still didn't write down everyone's name. If you have a favorite VA at ADV, they're in here somewhere. The only name of significance I didn't notice was Jessica Boone, and I'm sure she's going to show up somewhere. Oh, and with Monica Rial playing Mira, that now makes three different times she's shared a character with Aya Hisakawa.
I think the experiment of recording people together was a success. The chemistry is off the charts good. I'm sure it was a logistical nightmare, but it's paying off. Tiffany Grant and Chris Ayres are especially good together. Rob Mungle as the chief mechanic and his staff, which includes Cynthia Martinez, Mark Laskowski, Kurt Stoll and several others works well, too.
I can't finish this without mentioning the main trio of Brett Weaver, Hilary Haag and Laura Chapman. Brett is throwing himself into this role, and his fans are going to love it. It's got all the manic energy of his Gai Daigoji from Nadesico, but it's got plenty of heart and warmth as well. Hilary is Hilary, which is a very good thing indeed. She's sweet, insane, and not afraid to have a marital squabble right in the middle of battle. Laura Chapman is a goddess, and the sexy, commanding Kiriko Aoi seems to have been created just for her. At Sakuracon the spring before last, I asked Matt to please cast Laura in more shows, and since then he cast her in Chrono Crusade and now Godannar. Thanks, Matt.

Manage to watch the first episode of this today. The show rocks! The dub rocks as well. So far I'm loving it and kudos to Matt Greenfield for putting this dub out. I felt that much emotion/cheese, it's just awesome. Definitely a step above the Mazinkaiser dub (which was also awesome).
Will be watching the rest later tonight. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Well I finish watching the whole thing a couple of nights ago, so I'll just echo everyone's statement that this is one highly energetic and extremely entertaining dub. This will be on my top nominations for DotM alright. It's good!!!! (Not to mention the show is awesome too!)
Oh, also, since I didn't win a signed box from the guessing game contest, I went and got Tiffany Grant and Matt Greenfield's autographs today from our local con instead. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Godannar is too fuckin awesome /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif, thus far there have been no really annoying female characters that I've grown to loathe these few year and the dub is awesome to boot (though I have a few minor quibbles regarding the dub). This easily blows that "other" show out of the water. *glares at Fence* My only regret is that I wish I waited to find a box. /images/graemlins/relief1.gif My damn Best Buy is getting really annoying when it comes to anime.
Kudos Matt & Co., this is the first I've enjoyed an ADV title in a long time (well, besides Gantz /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif).

That's great. If you can't go to the VAs, bring the VAs to you. I loved Tiffany signing "Who the hell do you think I am?" across Shizuru's ass.

Speaking of ass, had dinner with the couple just a while ago and our little group had her sign an Asuka figure... in the ass. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
