I've been asked a fair bit about "Outlanders" since CPM made an official announcement during the summer con season. Well, I've got new information. CPM's today announcing the release date of "Outlanders" -- and a special contest letting fans actually cast the program. Leading up to CPM's "Outlanders" DVD release on February 7, 2006, Central Park Media is remastering all the animation's video and creating a new dub track from a pool of some of the industry's best talent. And, because "Outlanders" is a title Central Park Media has long been asked for by fans, CPM, in the coming weeks, will let anime fans everywhere decide the animation's final line-up!

Initial information about "Outlanders" is currently available at http://www.centralparkmedia.com/outlanders/ . Come back again on September 23 when the site will be updated with video auditions for all of "Outlander's" main parts. After watching the videos, fans will be able to vote for their favorites throughout the week. The contest closes at 11:59 PM EST on September 28th, and the dubbing starts immediately after. (Well, not at 12 AM.)

You're all encouraged to vote early and vote often. Voting is free and no registration is required; however, including an e-mail address with your vote will include your ballot in a special drawing for a handful of "Outlanders" DVDs.

Further, continue to check CPM's "Outlanders" website often as, after the voting's finished, we will be updating the site with new information and one-by-one reveal the winners in a series of behind-the-scenes online video profiles as audio dubbing and video remastering progress -- all leading up to the "Outlanders" DVD release on February 7. More, the entire production process will be documented in a special feature on the disc!

This should be copied in the English-Track forum as well.

fwiw, I've never seen Outlanders so I'm looking forward to that 9/23 thingy.

Awesome! And any other exuberant outbursts I can make. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Much appreciated, CPM, and you personally, Peter, for giving us the heads up. So we're literally going to be voting on video auditions for each of the parts? That is incredibly cool. I just hope the actors won't be too disturbed by it. /images/graemlins/wink.gif It'll be out of New York, I suspect? Any particular studio, director or writer you can detail out now?

Again, very cool. Thanks!

(And for sentimental sake, any chance you might pull a Media Blasters and also include the original Animaze dub from 1993?)

I second both the thanks for the information, and this particular request. I've not seen Outlanders, so I have no idea what the Animaze dub sounds like, but on the other hand, if you included it, then I would get to hear it, as well as the new dub you folks are making for us.

I think this idea of having fans vote for the audition they like best is pretty cool. It should be a lot of fun.

I've never seen the anime, but I've read the manga. It's a sprawling space opera by Johji Manabe. It features a bikini-clad horned hottie who falls in love with a human boy. Not, it's not Urusei Yatsura. It's a great story. I'm hoping the anime lives up to it.

The anime's a lot shorter, to put it simply. I haven't seen it myself in, I don't know, six years or so, so I don't remember it much, but I it's only a single 50 min OVA with much of the story well condensed. Still, kind of fun late 80s, early 90s OVA. Not groundbreaking, but enjoyable like others from the time. But I'm sucker for anything from that master of popcorn, Johji Manabe, so I'll get it no problem.

Njr actually could probably fill in some detail; he's always seemed quite fond of the show and early dub. (The Japanese side also features one of the few other roles from Ms. Lum herself, Fumi Hirano, so that's a bonus.)

You better believe I'll be participating in this one. I think its cool that you're letting us vote on who we want to dub this release. I also would like to see if the inclusion of the older dub would be possible, just to have something different and all.

Excellent questions about including the original dub. When CPM first announced "Outlanders," we wished to head in the direction of including both the original as well as a new English track; however, when reviewing materials for the DVD, the original English master was in sadly unusable condition. We tried a lot of things to fix it up, but ultimately, we were unable to repair it.

As such, CPM's "Outlanders" DVD will only include the original Japanese language track and CPM's newly-produced dub. I know there's an interest in having both English dubs, and if we could have delivered them, we would have.

First, I'm really wowed Outlanders has become a solid project. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

As this is ET, I'd like to nominate Doug Jacobs for an audition as Tetsuyo, the pervy male lead in Outlanders. Tetsuyo's Japanese seiyuu is Mitsuo Iwata who played Kintaro Oe in Golden Boy & also the even pervier Maa-kun in Ebichu.

Outlanders OVA is a very condensed telling, but it should be seen as a story in itself, a comedy-drama with dark elements, rather than a portion of the manga, which is brilliant in its own right (& badly needs a re-release.)

I like Battia & Garibaldi in the original dub. Garibaldi's deep bass voice is very menacing & Battia's just dead sexy. Both like Kahm are extremely violent characters. Sexy cute here though. (http://www.nichibeianime.com/cel-imgs/outlanders-imgs/ol001.jpg)

Capricorn was made into an OVA which ADV released on VHS, but never on DVD. Perhaps CPM could pick that up too, I don't know if it was ever dubbed though.

I bought a Japanese manga he made called Rai, just for the novelty of having it, since I can't read kanji. I don't think he has made anything new in years though.

It's 7:30 PM. We just got the "Outlanders" auditions online. I come to AoD to tell you guys it's 7:30 PM and we just got the auditions online only to find you've already found that the auditions are online. You guys are good.

Sorry they hit the web so late today. We had big VOTOMS meeting and there was a 1/12 Yamato Scopedog toy attending. We just got him in the office, but there's some disagreement as to whether he should be torn from his box and played with or kept pristine behind his plastic window. (My solution is to buy two.)

So, I voted:

Kahm A
Tetsuya B
Battia D
Geobaldi D

The toughest one to pick for was Geobaldi, but Geobaldi-D had a slight attitude-edge delivery against the others.

He left Drakuun uncompleted, with about 6 more chapters to go. This didn't sit well with Studio Proteus/Dark Horse, who were releasing in this country. But the last I heard, he was finally going to finish it. I hope so. It's a classic Manabe space opera, with plenty of action, sex and political intrigue. I especially love the princess with the snake girl guard/lover.

So, for the moment, I've voted once, with my email, with little thought of winning the drawing. But thanks again for just that one time, at least. (I noticed I voted the same way as treatment without realizing it. /images/graemlins/wink.gif)

I have no real plans to abuse it or even vote more than once. Besides even if I were to vote 1,000 times. Several other people may do the same thing or vote several more times than I would. Thus I'd still be in the same low chance situation. Heck most of us will have an even have worse chance with multiple votes.

In any case for the record I voted this way.

Kahm "A"
Tetsuya "C"
Battia "D"
Geobaldi "D"

I analyzed each video several times over and have decided on the following voices:

Kahm A
Tetsuya C
Battia A
Geobaldi D

I like em! Especially "Kahm A"! If that VA wins, I'll love watching this anime several times over in both langauges(Ms. Hirano in the sub woot). What a great combo IMO! /images/graemlins/wink.gif

*scratches his head*

Whats the point of entering this several times more than once? I could see that for a random drawing with no other objective, but a voting random drawing? Hmmm....

Sage58

Why'd CPM say you can vote as often as you like? While democracy is a great system, they've always been hiccups with elections. With what's gone on in Florida and Ohio in the last Presidential campaigns, the cheating that could go one in a little anime poll is astronomical. If we said you can only vote once, people could still trash their caches and change their IPs. We'd be trying to track down ghosts to validate the results. Rather than doing that, CPM's trying something else. Vote however often you'd like. With voting more than once no longer illegal, it will hopefully take some of the danger out of cheating the system. Granted, someone could have written a script that votes for the same VAs every .005 seconds and I'll find CPM's servers crashed on Monday morning. It's an experiment. We'll see what happens.

Looks like people here so far are in agreement about Kahm A and Geobaldi D at least. For Kahm A, I've said a couple times that I'd like that particular actress to get more lead roles so it only made sense for me to vote for her, and I felt she was the strongest overall anyway. And Geobaldi D was just perfect. He couldn't be any better.

Oh, and thanks to all twelve of the candidates, by the way. I appreciate them subjugating themselves to the usually overwrought opinions of their fans. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

But I wasn't listening to the others that closely in a voice-chasing frame of mind (which I thought was a good thing since the point should be on performance) so I can't say unless I listen to them again. Plus I'd suspect there's a little new blood involved.

I'll have to listen again when I'm at home later, but I was pretty damn sure that was Lisa Ortiz. She was using a much lower tone than usual but I was sure that was her. I am sadly less familiar with most voice actors from my own state than VAs from LA. Even though I do think I recognized a few voices I still voted by who I thought best fit those characters. I'm anxious to see who all the actors are and who gets cast.

Is Schemmel Geobaldi D too? I was thinking that for some reason though could be off. I think Vibe Jones was one of the Battia voices. Now I'm going to have to go back and see if I recognize any of those (I'm not good with NY, so I didn't really know on most of them, but that's good as it removes biases I guess...)

I'll have to listen again when I'm at home later, but I was pretty damn sure that was Lisa Ortiz. She was using a much lower tone than usual but I was sure that was her.

I heard her too, man. In fact, I thought I heard her twice, as the "C" option for both female parts.

My answers: A, B, B and D. I found that casting Tetsuya was the hardest (as I always like the bumbling male lead to not have the sort of voice that will be constantly making me wince). It was definitely between those first two options. While the first voice seemed most consistent, keeping his voice roughly within his chosen character pitch, actor "B" impressed me with his foley, as well as his rapid-fire, nervous laughter. And the way he bellowed "NOOOO!"

The rest of my choices were almost easy, though I gave those clips just as much careful consideration.

I feel that the first female voice linked to on that page is Leah Applebaum.

I went with A,B,A,D.

I totally agree with the whole Tetsuya thing. I believe that was the voice actor for Goku, though. What's he doing in NY? O_O

On that note, I remember hearing his voice in the dub for Berserk. Strangeness.

If you're talking about Sean Schemmel, he's usually based out of New York. He's done some acting and direction for NYAV Post, and with NYAV founder Sinterniklass (who also shows up in Ft. Worth work) does some stuff for 4kids and other things.

I went with:

A-B-D-D

Although to my untrained ear a lot of the voices sounded the same to me /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif.

EDIT: Looks like I wasn't the only one to do that /images/graemlins/cool.gif.

The voice actor for Goku - Sean Schemmel, has lived in NYC for 3 years or so.

Yep, Schemmel actually lives in NYC and has flown to Ft. Worth for the past three years every time he needs to record Goku. During this time he records episode characters and the like for other series.

Will you be using the original dub script with new VAs, or will it be re-written?
