View Full Version : Would like some good dubs that aren't from ADV or Funi/

Most of the anime i buy is usually ADV or Funi. For that reason i'm primarily familiar with thier dubs. But watching the comments of the draft has made me realize that there are a lot of good dubs that i'm missing.

I honestly don't know a lot about the various studios outside of Houston and Fort Worth. I kow that the Inu Yasha dub is done by Ocean, which is in Vancouver. And Naruto's being done at Studiopolis, in L.A. I have the first two disc of Samurai Champloo which i like but ANN dosen't list the studio and my discs are away at the moment. And i'm sure i've heard a New York or Carolina dub at some point, but i wouldn't know. So to broaden my horizons, any good recommendations are appreciated.

Recommended dubs from...

Los Angeles - R.O.D the TV. This was my pick for top dub of 2004. Great stuff.

Vancouver - Key the Metal Idol. Very well-done dub for a fascinating show that puts a new spin on the "do robots have souls?" genre.

Calgary - Jubei-Chan and Jubei-Chan 2. The deadpan performances from the Bluewater crew really enhance the anime.

New York - The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. One of the greatest anime series ever made, very well-dubbed. Rachael Lillis's Yuriko Star is a great chance to hear her as an adult character and Crispin Freeman's Tylor is very good, but the glory of this dub is David Brimmer's Yamamoto.

Carolina - You're Under Arrest. Tamara Burnham Mercer's performance as Natsumi is one of the all-time great comic performances in anime.

Austin (the other Texas dub studio) - Petite Princess Yucie. A perfect little gem of a dub for a fun little show. And it's a crying shame that we'll hear no more from this studio.

First one that comes to mind is His and Her Circumstances, a landmark dub from the New York market. Outstanding performances from the entire ensemble cast (Veronica Taylor, Liam O'Brien, and Lisa Ortiz among the standouts) and a well-written script to match.

Where to start? In the lifespan of dubbing in North America, ADV and Funi's stuff is two fifths of what's out there.

Samurai Champloo, for starters, is Bang Zoom!, arguably now the most prolific studio in LA right now, with New Generation Pictures, Animaze (which throughout the 90s was the studio in LA) and half a dozen smaller studios following. They all do work for mostly Geneon, plus Bandai and Media Blasters and rarely Viz. But everyone there, being LA, probably has the largest talent base to draw from.

Best of LA? Way too much to mention, but I'll make a sampling: El Hazard, Battle Athletes Victory, Cowboy Bebop, Legend of Black Heaven, Big O and Ghost in the Shell: SAC for a 10-year sampling of Animaze; Last Exile, Gad Guard, Planetes for three solid recent examples with Bang Zoom!; NieA_7, Haibane Renmei, Texhnolyze, R.O.D. the TV and Paranoia Agent for a random sampling from NGP (everything they do is highly praised around here, though, so you can't miss); plus there's some things like the SynchPoint in-house FLCL that is very good.

You've heard New York if you've heard a 4kids dub on TV, at least. Pokemon, especially. But their best work is from studios like NYAV Post (probably now with everything MB has given them the more prolific studio out there) Headline and smaller studios like Tripwire, Mercury and the old TAJ. Central Park Media, The Right Stuf and Media Blasters work with them. The best of New York? His and Her Circumstances, Boogiepop Phantom, Comic Party and Genshiken from Headline; Magic Users Club, Berserk, Giant Robo and Piano from NYAV; Slayers and Irresponsible Captain Tylor from the mostly defunct TAJ; Plus Alien Nine from CPM in-house. Like others have already said, I think His and Her is the single greatest dub out of New York, and one of the three best I've ever heard.

Carolina may as well be old school at this point. Once Coastal Carolina was a shining jewel of the nineties dub scene, then AnimEigo reportedly hung them out to dry after some very fine work with things like Oh My Goddess and You're Under Arrest. Bandai used them once very successfully with Blue Submarine No. 6. More recently, Coastal came back as Phoenix Post Sound and did the very enjoyable Miami Guns dub for AN Entertainment.

Vancouver I can give stuff as well, but I'll let others like B-Rad take that one because I'm tired. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you don't already have it, I'd definitely recommend FLCL. It's been my favourite dub for some time now. There's a lot of great performances, and the leads really nailed their characters. Good stuff.

edit: Ah, I see bctaris already had it covered. Well, I second it. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

INFINITE RYVIUS ... the best dub you haven't heard. Westwood's finest in Vancouver delivering on all cylinders. You can buy this entire show for like $30 in some places. That's an insanely awesome deal.

After that, go seek out Petite Princess Yucie and all the great dubs from NYC (bctaris neglected to mention 4-time award-winning Midori Days in his montage) and Los Angeles. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'm still in shock about Midori Days. I mean, I heard no buzz or anything. I don't know the first thing about the show but somehow it's netted the NY pool it's best showing in months. And on top of that it's mostly due to new blood at NYAV Post instead of the old stalwarts. But why couldn't Giant Robo get the same exposure?

I think it was too big a cast in too short a series. Midori Days really only had the two leads, so there was no vote-splitting. But Giant Robo got plenty of individual votes, but they were spread out over several people. As for why it didn't get a Best Dub win, I guess because it was up against R.O.D. the TV. Nobody was going to win against that juggernaut.

I'm not so sure about vote splitting. I think Sean Schemmel was the only one who got a best actor nomination in volume 2 of Giant Robo, and only three people ended up voting for him (I was one of them).

You Planetes fans can go ahead and vote for the series and its dub if you're enjoying it at the moment. I know I sure am having a blast. However, you have only <font color="red">10 DAYS REMAINING</font> to cast your ballots. So don't forget.

And if you're getting a kick out of Goro Taniguchi's direction and storytelling in that series... and you're looking for a memorable dub to go along with it... don't hesitate to give Infinite Ryvius a try.

Yep, that's his baby too. Let Planetes introduce you to the wonders of Ryvius! Still less than $35 for the ENTIRE series at DVD Pacific. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Where's the love for Hand Maid May in this thread? /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

Hand Maid May has an awesome dub! I'd easily rank it as one of the all-time best LA dubs. Lia Sargent does excellent double-duty as both ADR Director and VA for May. Lots of top actors from the LA pool do great work here, with an especially outstanding performance by Bob Marx as everyone's best friend and worst enemy, Kotaro Nanbara.

Dai-Guard - Best Monster Island dub. Joey Hood, Mick D'Arcy &amp; Lana Lesley are wonderful. Gee, I think they're still available for the VA draft. /images/graemlins/relief.gif Oops, Dai-Guard's from ADV. /images/graemlins/shy00000.gif

Star Blazers (seasons 1 &amp; 2)- Still the best English dub after all these years.

Hmmm
As a reference point my fav ADV dubs have been:
Rune Soldier
FullMetalPanic - Fummoffo
Azumanga Daioh (eventually)
Happy Lesson - although this is out of the now defunct Monster Is

Of the ADV dubs I have been less than impressed with....
Samurai X the Dub does not exist.... no, no, no.
Voices from a Distant Star What wretched wretched script tinkering.

From New Gen - my fav dubbing Studio:
ROD the TV - This is a great dub. As Geoduck indicated it is possibly the dub of the year (or at this stage - Ever).
Koi Kaze - Not enough people watch this great series. I must've rewatched my discs 5 times now. Again another fantastic dub from New Gen.
Ikki Tosen - from the sublime to the ridiculous. Ikki Tosen is all tit and tickle and in terms of story (or lack thereof) its right up there with super-tripe-pulp. Yet New Gen's dub is right on the money and has invested it with right amount of infectious energy.
Paranoia Agent = Ok never mind, dub or no, this series is fantastic! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
Most of New Gen's productions have been of a very high standard - IMHO much higher than ADV's output (ADV of course have many many more series to dub - so more variability is to be expected)

BZ
Last Exile - showcase dub from this studio.

I forget the studios but amongst other output from Geneon
I My, Me, Strawberry Eggs

Out of Bandai - who have produced some of the best dubs and some of the worst crap I have seen -
Recommendable dubs are:
Galaxy Angels
Big O

While B-Rad waxes lyrical about Ryvius I'd give it berth. A shipful of whiny bratty kids acted well is *still* a ship full of whiny brats. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

YES! Ryvius is awesome, not only is it the best dub from Ocean, the show itself is excellent. Everybody should buy it now since it's only $35 at DVD Pacific, the quality of show to price ratio is really high. I don't know how people can pass this one up at that ridiculous price.

Trying not to repeat the others too much, but some non-ADV/Funi dubs that deserve props are R.O.D the TV, Koi Kaze(and basically everything else from New Gen), His and Her Circumstances, Dai-Guard(I know it's from ADV, but it still warrants a mention), FLCL, and Oh My Goddess.

That's one I forgot. About the last of the brief term of in-house CPM dubs, with Tom Wayland at the helm. A not especially great but fun show Arcade Gamer Fubuki is another one of those, and is greatly enjoyable (http://home.comcast.net/~bb_threlkeld/onlinestorage/AGF-Bradford.mp3) thanks to one Brad Bradford. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Stuff from other studios worth checking out:

Arcade Gamer Fubuki: The dub made this stinking pile of crap well worth it. La...la..la.. PANTIES!!!!

Cowboy Bebop: Can't go wrong with this.

Daphne in Brilliant Blue: I dunno what makes me like this show but I know the dub is definitely one of them.

His and Her Circumstances: The best dub I've heard. Far out-ranks all others, even ROD TV IMO.

Figure 17: Great show and great dub.

Haibane Renmei: Another great show with a great dub.

ROD TV: 'Nuff said.

Stellvia: Despite the show having this odd feeling of deja-vu with Battle Athletes Victory, the dub is another thing worth checking out.

Mahoromatic: Just hearing Ellen Wilkinson playing a lead is just good enough for me. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Heat Guy J: A pity about this show being a sleeper, because the dub for this is excellent.

Stuff from ADV's Monster Island: Dai-Guard, King of Bandit Jing, Petite Princess Yucie

A lot of excellent dubs have already been mentioned. New Generation Pictures does a lot of consistently great work. Recent titles from them include (but are certainly not limited to) Koi Kaze, ROD the TV, and Girls Bravo. Those are all very different shows, but if you want something else there's always other shows such as L/R and Haibane-Renmei. For a Bang Zoom! dub I'd suggest Last Exile or Please Teacher. Like some others have said, I'd also put in a strong recommendation for Dai Guard. It's ADV, but a lesser-known dub recorded in Austin. Great performances in that one, and a very fun show.

While I'll probably be echoing many of what's been said, let me list off some of my favorite dubs from the West Coast (not as well-rounded on East Coast dubs) Most of these are recent titles or within the past few years:

Right Stuf (I can't remember the exact studio): Boogiepop Phantom (I'm not big on most of Right Stuf's (or New York's) work, but this one I love) (EDIT: After seeing Ben's post, I forgot about how much I loved His &amp; Her Circumstances, as well)

Ocean: Arjuna! Yeah, they've got quite a few other good dubs, but this is my favorite one they've produced, and it seems to get the least amount of recognition. Maggie Blue O'Hara, Andrew Francis, Brad Swaile, I don't know what's not to love.

New Generation Pictures: Arguably my favorite studio, most of Jonathan Klein's directed dubs are wonderful (Haibane Renmei, Texhnolyze(!), and Paranoia Agent), but just about everything they've done is. Other ones I'd note are L/R: Licensed by Royalty, Niea_7 and R.O.D the TV (both directed by Taliesin Jaffe).

Bang Zoom!: Their dub for Last Exile was my favorite dub of all last year. I'm also really digging the still being released Scrapped Princess (Bandai) and Tenjho Tenge (Geneon).
