View Full Version : Favorite Dub VA Named Rita (Hurricane Rita discussion)

B-Rad Lascelle
09-22-2005, 02:05 AM
My top choice would easily be Rita Stephens... primarily known for playing Yuzu's adorable little sister in NYAV Post's Shrine of the Morning Mist... and who has recently joined the NYC defection out to the West coast. She can be found voicing Anzai in last month's Ghost Talker's Daydream courtesy of Sam Regal and NewGen.

There... this can now be considered an on-topic post.

There may be a thread dedicated to Hurricane Rita in Off-Topic, but I figured we could use one here due to the rapport the dub fan community has built with the great talents and staff at ADV in Houston. Just want to wish all of you guys the very best to your friends and family over the next few days... particularly to those of you who are off to Atlanta and Australia for conventions this weekend with loved ones left behind and potential delays getting back home.

Quite a large number of us descended upon your home turf back in the spring and were welcomed by the local community, the Kamikazecon staff and everyone at ADV Films. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I extend my best wishes to everyone that greeted us so warmly back in March and the many talents we've grown to appreciate in dubs these past few years. You guys all rock!

So please, do whatever you need to do to stay safe and protect your homes and families over the weekend. That goes for everyone from the top ADV execs all the way down to Killer The Dog. Stay safe!

Everyone out there in the path of Hurricane Rita(especially you Houston peeps and VAs), take care!! Be safe!!

And unfortunately, I haven't heard a dub with a VA named Rita yet, so I can't answer the question...

As most of you know, a hurricane is headed for Houston. I'm in the process of packing up my stuff and heading out of town. I'm so sorry that I won't be at AWA this weekend - I just don't feel comfortable leaving my pets/car/etc. with so many scary things being said on tv about the severity of the storm.

I believe there is great power in prayer. Please ask God to protect me and the others who are travelling, that we're safe and that our fears are tempered.

Love,
Luci

Hey guys!

Well, if all goes as planned David and I and a crew of ADVers will be on our way to Atlanta for AWA. However, at this point we're not sure...Houston is crazy right now as I'm sure you can believe. I've been getting text messages (the lines are tied) all day full of concern. Thanks. I appreciate it. I can assure you that we will be fine.

Even if we don't make it to Atlanta we will be okay. I'll camp out at my Mom's house if I'm still here. We've been through this before...a long time ago...but it was okay. Sure there's gonna be damage but it shouldn't be that bad.

Let me just say that the main reason Katrina was so devastating to New Orleans was because the city is technically below sea level. Yes, there was destruction but the main issue was the levees breaking and the pumps that stopped working. That's why the city was destroyed. We're at sea level and Houston is a little farther in so we should be fine.

I'll try to keep in touch and let you guys know what's up if I can. I'll check in as soon as I can afterwards...unless I'm in Atlanta and then I'll let you all know that I made it.

Again, thanks for all of your concerns! I truly feel the love and I am so appreciative! Just don't worry. I'll keep in touch and let you know how Houston is doing. Either from Houston...or from Atlanta.

Much love to all of you!

-Monica-

Yeah, it's kinda crazy here right now, but I'm going to try and tough it out. Actually...I think toughing out the storm may turn out better than trying to tough out the freeway. I'm not tough enough to "tough out" something as tough as that.

Hopefully ADV HQ won't get crushed by a tree or something. I'm walking distance from there, and this area seems like it should be -reasonably- safe. I'm just worried about flooding, because even a slight amount could do a lot of damage to the sea of electronic equipment there.

I'm not worried about me, though...I'm worried about my girlfriend in Victoria (who is going to San Antonio, I hope) and my parents in Angleton.

I'm uploading all my scripts and taking my computer with me wherever I go, so I hope I can get back to work soon.

Personally, my favorite actress named Rita was Rita Moreno....

HEY, YOU GUUUUUUUUUUUYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYSSSSS!

And, of course, there was West Side Story, she was pretty good in that too.

Those of us who remain are battening the hatches down and are shooting the bird to the big swirly cloud out in the Gulf.

It's just not doing anything. =)

OK, all kidding aside, we appreciate all the sentiment and good will coming our way. Obviously, it's my first hurricane and the whole process and experience has left me agog and the storm hasn't even arrived yet.

Take er sneezy, and think those happy thoughts

Yeah, Monica and the crew will be alright. Like she said, they're not below sea level like New Orleans was. I was gonna check on Monica and Greg, but decided not to bother them since I figured they'd already be getting a ton of calls and were busy enough trying to prepare for the hurricane.

I did find one other Rita, Rita Rivera. The only role she has had so far was Maria Rivera in Episode 6 of Mew Mew.

Rita Stephens is great, but I don't think she's that new, even as far as LA is concerned. /images/graemlins/wink.gif Interesting that she's been in an LA dub recently.

And as Victor noted, there is also Rita Rivera, who voiced a Spanish-speaking part in Mew Mew Power.

Can't think of any others at the moment.

For those in the path of the hurricane, stay safe and be well. As with B-Rad, I really appreciate the efforts of the people at ADV in bringing over many great titles with excellent treatment (particularly in regard to the dubs we've received). /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Hey Guys . . .

Things are really crazy here right now..I just wanted to drop everyone a line about what's going on.

I know that a lot of you have seen the news about Hurricane "Rita" and it's path to Houston. I don't really know how it's going to effect Houston. A lot of people are leaving town. My family is staying put for now. There have been no orders to evacuate Houston or the southwest part of the city. Even if there was an evacuation order...The highways look like parking lots, and there is no gas in the city anywhere.

I am leaving in just a few hours for Anime Weekend Atlanta. I know, I can't believe I'm going to be at an anime convention this weekend. It is so hard to be separated from my family and friends at a time like this.

So please keep everyone in Gulf Coast in your thoughts and prayers over the weekend. Texas is a pretty strong place, and we've braved many a storm through....So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things will be ok when I come home on Monday.

Take Care Everyone....

I made it to my parents house a couple of hours ago and am munching down on peanut butter and crackers. It's so good, I can't tell you. All of the roads are incredibly jammed - it took me 13-14 hours to get here (with three pets in my loaded down car. sometime around 5a I thought I was losing my mind). Phones are all wonky, lots of people are still gridlocked/crawling on all the outbound roads and gas is scarce down there, so keep sending up prayers. I'm staying here until it's safe to go back. Now it's time for a bath and bed - I'm about to drop.

Okay, first of all, I'm staying in town. It looks like we're getting the "clean" side of the hurricane. It's not for CERTAIN, but it seems a pretty good chance, for now. Don't think I'm not obsessing over the news.

The great tragedy is the mess on the highways. It's terrible. People are stranded, out of gas, hungry, having heat stroke, dying of carbon monoxide poisoning, having accidents, dehydrating, etc... I'm saddened, and frightened by this. What will happen to the stranded when the storm actually hits? I shudder to think.

My best wishes are with Monica, Greg, and all the rest at AWA, and of course to all those fleeing the storm.

As for those of us staying behind, say a prayer or send some good energy our way.

I am going off line in the morning, until the storm passes.

much love to all of you,

[ QUOTE ]
I just wanted to let you all know that I chose to stay home. Greg and David and Mariela and Jessica and Vic all made it to Atlanta fine. Luci cancelled a couple of days ago... I actually went and this is why I cancelled:

I didn't get any sleep that night as I realized that we were going to have to leave at 7am to even attempt to make our 1pm flight. Greg and I took a shuttle and it took 4 hours to get to the airport. The lines at the airport were so long that we stood outside in the 100 degree weather for 3 more hours. Then we missed our flight so we were taken to a "missed your flight" line where we stood for another 2 hours. I hadn't eaten or slept. Everyone was being rude and pushy. There were people at the airport who were leaving the NEXT DAY who cause me to miss my flight. Well, we got on standby and I thought that at least I'd get to eat on the other side of the gate. We got through security and then EVERYTHING WAS CLOSED! The airport was completely full. It
just sent me over the edge. I walked up and asked to cancel my ticket. Then the lady at the counter said that we would get tickets. She printed it out for me and I just looked at it and cried. I called my mom to try and figure out what to do and she said "You do whatever YOU want to do. Don't let other people make decisions for you." And that's what I had been doing all day. So I went up to the gate and told the
lady that I was going home. I freaked out. I apologize to everyone I missed this weekend but I just couldn't do it.

I cannot tell you how ridiculous this all is! I would be at AWA if it wasn't for all of these idiots listening to the TV hype and falling into hysteria. I've lost so much respect for my city and it's citizens. 22 people have already died...EVACUATING! People are going to be stuck on the sides of the roads in the middle of this. Meanwhile, we're only going to have 8-12 inches of rain and maybe 75 mph winds. I know that may sound scary to some of you but understand that we deal with stuff like that all the time. It's no more than a big storm. Well, I'm heading to my mom's where she has cooked and has all kinds of supplies. I'm taking a bottle of wine and I'm going to relax...in the dark if need be. I'll get back to you guys as soon as I can.

So much for hurricane preparedness... although to Houston's credit, the U.S. media and government have become masters at channeling fear into the public consciousness. Most of those deaths occured courtesy of a single tragic bus accident where mechanical problems triggered a series of oxygen tank explosions (it was transporting the elderly to safety and overheated). And hurricanes are unpredictable things... some 36 hours ago, it could have easily maintained a course that would have hit both Galveston and Houston head-on.

It's still really unfortunate what Monica had to endure at the airport... hopefully she's safe at home and taking it easy. Nobody needs the extra stress of travelling under those conditions on your weekend off just to hit an anime convention. Especially when it'll involve leaving friends and family behind to endure a natural disaster... direct hit or not. Anime fans are an understanding bunch for the most part. Or at least the ones that matter are.

As usual, Monica's mom is wise and provides the best advice. Donna rocks! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

If any of you folks from Houston (fans and talent alike) have Internet access on Sunday night, please do pop into VoxBox to let everyone know you're doing A-O-K. I'll be away watching my Bills this weekend, so I may not drop by until late.

You got that right. FOX News was obsessing about some plane that had to make a crash landing in LA when it's landing gear malfunctioned. For at least an hour, they were talking about this plane, showing it circling around the sky, trying to burn fuel, and finally landing (if anything had gone wrong, we would've see a plane crash on national TV). I don't think some plane whose landing wheels are stuck at a 90 degree angle deserves THAT much news coverage.

Anyway, back to the topic. My thoughts and prayers go out to Chris P., Chris A., Greg, Monica, Hilary, Clint, Allen, and everyone else at ADV, as well as to all the AODers we have in Houston and anyone else from the area. May you all be safe, and your families too. The weird thing about that is...I think it was a jetblue flight, where all the seats have satellite TV. And I heard that the captain didn't turn the TV off, so the passengers were watching news footage of their own emergency landing.

Yeah, now I'm just irritated because I'm three days behind schedule on my Moby Dick script, because I've been stressing over nothing. Well...let's not say nothing, let's say "what in all probability will be almost nothing." I don't mean to belittle the situation, because it's quite serious for some people...I'm just not one of them. Buuut...hindsight is 20/20, and I'm glad to hear that the traffic situation is getting a bit better. I didn't know where my grandmother was until recently. She was pretty irritated about taking an unecessary (and unecessarily long) 24 hour drive.

I almost hope I lose electricity for a little bit, so I can have an excuse to lay on my bed roll in the closet and play Ouendan. Or maybe read Three Kingdoms by candlelight with my cat. Right now, I'm feeling guilty for not getting to work.

Well, to be fair, the track that it was taking with the winds that it had yesterday morning had me kinda squiddly, and I don't blame anyone for wanting to get out. But trying to evacuate an entire metro area of some 5 million people - the word "king-hell clusterfarg" doesn't even come close to describing it. There's just no orderly way to do it with these highways in that timeframe that doesn't end that way.

Also, part of our local hysteria stems from remembering Allison in 2001 - a lot of the people weren't running from the winds but instead from the potential floods like we get. (While the Houston metro area slopes into Galveston Bay, we still have plenty of retention zones. As in, every few blocks. The entire southeast side is a big ol' flood plain.)

Myself - while I thought about cutting and running, I remembered how high up we were during Allison, and also looked back to Alicia back in '83 and figured we could take a cat3 that would hit us with cat1 winds by the time it was this far inland. I'm not going to begrudge anyone for wanting to get out, though.

</pedantic lecture>

That said, everyone be safe. Even tropical-storm winds can ruin your day, and floods can be nasty as well. (Unless they happen to be <font color="pink">pink</font>.)

As for me, I'm riding out the storm at home in NW Houston. We just had dinner with our neighbors across the street and walked back home. It's about 11:00pm Central, and there's not much going on out there right now--a little drizzle and a breeze--but they say that it's still coming.

What I've seen online and read in this thread just today is really kind of frightening. I hope rita passes with little more than a fizzle, if at all possible, and that everyone around there and their friends and families all stay safe and can somehow return to normal peaceful lives as soon as possible.

Well here it is Saturday night, after riding out the storm in SE Houston(in the northwestern part of Evac Zone C), we didn't get nothing more than some rain and some winds, the power was knocked out for about 30 secs 3 times, but never lost it for a long period of time. DirecTV was still up and running. About 3 pm, I went out for a bit and looked around the area, most damage I saw was a few fences down, a stop light dangling from the line, and a light pole fallen over.

Well, I take deadlines very seriously and I'm trying to get ahead of schedule so I can go to the Sex Machineguns concert (in Nashville of all places). It's hard with two jobs and hurricanes and all. It's not that I regret being prepared, it's just that once I'd done everything I could, I wish I would have stopped being so stressed about it and got back to work. After all, I was just sitting around and worrying.

But...if it's any consolation to anyone here, I'm sure the ADV building didn't get hurt. I mean, it's like...2 blocks from here, and we barely even got a drizzle. It like...sprinkled a while and the wind blew a bit, but when the sun came out (drying up what little rain we had) it was like nothing happened at all. Hopefully people who live further away than I do came out just as well.

I feel guilty for getting off so easy when other have suffered from this storm in the same way I feel bad for those who put themselves in danger on the road when it would have been safer to stay.

Anyway, after some feverish work, Moby Dick is back on schedule. I lost my "lead" on the schedule, but at least I'm on time. On a lighter note, I wholeheartedly recommend this show to anyone and everyone. I'm grateful to have gotten picked up as the writer (on volume 3+, I think) as I think it's arguably the best show I've worked on. Ahh...but I haven't seen it all yet, so maybe I shouldn't say. It just seems to get better and better, though.

Oh, and I was just listening to one of your performances today. The Lamp Spirit in Princess Tutu volume 1. That was a wonderful little performance.

Aww thanks, Mike. That was a lot of fun to work on. It's fun trying to imagine what something like light would sound like if it had a voice. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

How about Rita Hayworth? Remember Gilda?

Isn't Richard Hayworth (Kenshin's VA) related to her somehow?

Nashville, quite an interesting place for them to have a concert. Too bad I just found out about it and have school. If there was a way, I would make every attempt to go see them since they're one of my favorite bands. Maybe they'll come by NY one day.

I believe Anchang was checking out recording studios there. I guess I can't REALLY complain, since Texas has gotten D'espairs Ray, Psycho le Cemu, Guitar Wolf, Kishidan and the Pillows.

STILL! ARGHHH! I'm still considering going...but I'm not so sure. If I should see anyone, it's SMG. My band covers like...5 of their songs.

He is (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0134449/), actually. Her nephew.

I really enjoyed that part too, especially when she was <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>giving Duck those riddles</span>.
