There's one dub ongoing right now I adore above almost all others... and that's Madlax. And for those of you who've been taking the ride with me, Volume 4 is leaps and bounds beyond the rest for one key reason: four episodes of a tour de force performance from Nancy Novotny that easily stands out as the benchmark highlight of her career to date.
I know what you're thinking... "Brad's going into one of his ravings again, so let's just tune him out and think about how many awards we can hand out to Ah! My Goddess TV. I'll come back when he posts those Jay Hickman outtakes."
Fine... be that way... but before you go, here's a little something (http://www.dubawards.com/A Friendly Request.mp3) to get your attention. /images/graemlins/noseblef.gif
Now that I have your undivided attention... <ahem> ... let's get to the heart of the issue. Yeah, this volume has all of the good stuff you've come to expect from Madlax... Kyle's killer direction, Monica's great script, a capable supporting cast rising to the occasion, the return of FancyPants56, Darth Vader references.
But as great as all of that is, the one thing you'll be thinking about once this disc is done is, "Damn, Nancy blew me away!"
Well, okay, for the first 10 minutes you'll be thinking, "did Madlax really bump off three guys while naked?" but after you rewind and confirm that is indeed the case you'll keep coming back to Nancy's performance. It gets under your skin and is simply impossible to forget.
EXTENSIVE DUB CLIPS BELOW... PREPARE TO DIVE IN!
<font color="purple">EPISODE 13 ~ AWAKE</font>
<ul type="square"> I'm Margaret, Silly! (http://www.dubawards.com/I'm Margaret, Silly!.mp3) (Vic Mignogna, Luci Christian, Ben Estus & Brittney Karbowski)

Margaret's Threat (http://www.dubawards.com/Margaret's Threat.mp3) (Luci Christian & Brittney Karbowski)
<font color="purple">EPISODE 14 ~ MEMORY</font>
<ul type="square"> Red Shoe Diaries (http://www.dubawards.com/Red Shoe Diaries.mp3) (Kelly Manison, Nancy Novotny, Luci Christian & Kira Vincent Davis)
The Watcher (http://www.dubawards.com/The Watcher.mp3) (Brittney Karbowski, Vic Mignogna, Kira Vincent Davis & Luci Christian)
The Meldster Makes Her Move (http://www.dubawards.com/The Meldster Makes Her Move.mp3) (Christine Auten, Nancy Novotny & Kelly Manison)
The rest of the cast ain't half bad either. Vic's Carrossea and Kelly's Vanessa will be getting serious consideration on the awards front, as well.
Why don't any of those fictitious countries mentioned on West Wing have cool names like Gazth-Sonika? Any ideas?
This dub deserves extensive love so look for additional clips from Episodes 15 & 16 featuring more of Nancy's shining moments (http://www.dubawards.com/A Friendly Reply.mp3) from this latest disc... along with Volume 3's entire roster of 'Conversations With SSS' clips... in the coming days.

Nancy has been an impressive find for ADV, but this volume may actually start getting her the award consideration she deserves. This is a great dub, and a fascinating show. Congratulations to Kyle and the cast.

I've really been enjoying Madlax. I wasn't really interested in the show until I heard about Nancy Navotny's performance, and then I discovered the show itself is really good. I was really surprised by Luci Christian as Margaret Burton. When I heard it, I couldn't believe it was her, it took me two volumes to not double check the credits to make sure someone else was that part.
Madlax so far is one of those dubs where everything works, all the character sound right, it just works. Hopefully it'll get some award recognition some time down the road. And the 'Conversations with SSS' are totally awesome, it cracks me up everytime.
Reading this just made vol. 4 jump to the top of my Netflix queue.

Memo to FancyPants56... not enough people are watching Madlax. Despite Nancy's breakout performance, Monica's immaculate script, Kyle's polished direction, stellar work from the likes of Luci Christian, Kelly Manison, Vic Mignogna, Christine Auten, Mike Kleinhenz, Kira Vincent Davis, Cynthia Martinez, Brittney Karbowski, Allison Sumrall and others... they're bypassing Madlax in favor of... HAREM SHOWS. And Bottle Fairy preorders.
Why is this, FancyPants56? I am in need of your guidance and wisdom on this matter. Are the Conversations With SSS fan segments not amusing enough to dub fans? Perhaps they need to be even MORE hilarious.
<font color="purple">EPISODE 15 ~ CAMOUFLAGE</font>
<ul type="square"> The Origins of Madlax (http://www.dubawards.com/The Origins of Madlax.mp3) (Nancy Novotny & Kelly Manison)
Sweating Bullets (http://www.dubawards.com/Sweating Bullets.mp3) (Mike Kleinhenz, Vic Mignogna & Nancy Novotny)
A False War (http://www.dubawards.com/A False War.mp3) (Cynthia Martinez, Nancy Novotny & Kelly Manison)
<font color="purple">EPISODE 16 ~ MOMENT</font>
<ul type="square"> A New Perspective on Stupidity (http://www.dubawards.com/A New Perspective on Stupidity.mp3) (Nancy Novotny, Rick Piersall, Braden Hunt, Andy McAvin & Jay Hickman)
Let's Meet in Our Dreams (http://www.dubawards.com/Let's Meet in Our Dreams.mp3) (Luci Christian, Vic Mignogna, Kira Vincent Davis & Cynthia Martinez)
Filled With the Essence of Mankind (http://www.dubawards.com/Filled With the Essence of Mankind.mp3) (Nancy Novotny & Mike Kleinhenz)
Have I mentioned yet how much Nancy's Madlax rocks? 'Cause it does. That last clip is plenty evidence of that. But man, I don't know what it'll take to win some of these hardened fans over, FancyPants56.
This volume had it all... incredible dub, nude kickboxing, lots of juicy plot revelations, lesbian undertones, Mike Kleinhenz delivering campy villain dialogue like nobody else, more 'Conversations With SSS' hilarity for dub fans... and what? TWO WHOLE RESPONSES? That's all? The Kodocha thread has 5 TIMES AS MANY HITS. And it's an impossible-to-sell, extremely long, C-category shoujo series (as the bigshots in marketing like to say). /images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Maybe ADV needs to release a torrent package for hype purposes.
Maybe Monica needs to include an autographed copy of her script adaptation notes.
Maybe we need Madlax plushies.
I really don't know.
But FancyPants... if you're out there reading this and have any suggestions of your own to offer, I'd be thrilled to read them.
Still to come... more 'Conversation With SSS' clips. Then again, maybe I won't bother if people aren't paying attention. /images/graemlins/depresse.gif

thanks SO much for the nice comments on madlax! i just popped into the english track after being out of the country for a week (i was in fabulous glasgow, scotland for a music festival) and it was such a treat to see brad's great fancypants56 missive.
i personally loved every minute of madlax volume 4--not that i didn't love the others, too, but volume 4 is the best yet. as margaret would say (whilst chatting online with fancypants56, of course)--OMG! the show is getting SO GOOD! i do hope more people get a chance to check it out at some point--dub or sub or whatever. in my humble opinion, madlax is a very special show. of course i'm a wee bit biased, but i really, really think it's true! i'm getting ready to start recording the last block of episodes, and i know i will be very sad when we wrap it up. i know that kelly manison, for one, has similar feelings.
anyway, thanks again, so much. yay, madlax!
all the best, you guys...

[/ QUOTE ]You were in the UK!? /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif Dammit - if I'd known, I'd have made an effort to get over - Scotland's just a hop across from Northern Ireland, and after missing you at KKC I'd have loved to say hi. Regardless, did you enjoy your trip?

I hope you enjoyed our traditional Brittish weather whilst you were over here :D
And there's no need to thank us for the kind comments about Madlax, you trully ruled in this volume, and in all of the previous volumes too!

I know I've been complaining about the lack of Cynthia Martinez voiced characters recently, so I really have no excuse for not picking up this show. Especially seeing as she got a second place vote for Laetitia. From what I saw on TAN the dub is great! It's just I'm not too thrilled with the story line /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif. Maybe watching only one episode every two or three weeks was the problem, but I just couldn't get into it. Now I think TAN has dropped the show all together, but I hope I am wrong /images/graemlins/depresse.gif.

It takes until about halfway through volume 3 until the story will REALLY grab you. I think it was worth going through the first two discs, not that I DIDN'T enjoy them... I think Lamelda (sp?) kept my interest until volume 3, which then lead to the story grabbing me... and stuff.
Oh and possible <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Madlax x Venessa.</span>
That shit is hot.

I dunno - I've watched through Volume 4, and I'm not grabbed yet. I'm still watching primarily because the dub is awesome, and the Conversations with SSS are possibly the best DVD extra ever.

Funny you should say half way through volume 3, because I think that's as far as TAN got. Last episode I saw was 10, which would be smack dab in the middle of volume 3 right? Oh well I hope they resume it on TAN, or maybe I'll pick up the inevitable think pack set, although I should be shot for missing the awesome Conversations with SSS /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif.

hi, aniki! wow, i'm amazingly flattered that you'd have considered hopping over to scotland to say hello!
i enjoyed my trip so much. i've been to scotland a few times before, but i'd never been in glasgow for any longer than a day-trip. i have to admit that i've now fallen a bit in love with the city, particularly its west end. i'm trying to work out a way to maybe do some sort of graduate degree there someday. (i'm dreaming, i know...) in any case, i will definitely be going back as soon as possible. despite having been so close, i've NEVER been to ireland! i'd definitely love to visit someday.
thanks for your nice post! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
